Minimum tillage and residue retention increase soil microbial population size and diversity: Implications for conservation tillage

Changes in the taxonomic composition of soil bacterial communities under different inter-row tillage managements in a sloping vineyard of the Balaton Uplands (Hungary)

The common grape (Vitis vinifera L.) has been cultivated for thousands of years. Nowadays, it is cultivated using a variety of tillage practices that affect the structure of the soil microbial communities and thus the health of the vine. The aim of this study was to explore and compare the effects of tillage (shallow tillage with bare soil) and no-tillage (perennial grass cover) practices on soil physical and chemical properties and soil bacterial community diversities in a small catchment. Soil samples were taken in July and October 2020 at different slope positions of two vineyards exposed to erosion. The two sampling sites were separated by the agricultural inter-row management type: tilled and no-tilled slopes. The taxonomic diversity of bacterial communities was determined using 16S rRNA gene-based amplicon sequencing method on Illumina MiSeq platform. Based on the examined soil properties, the sampling areas were separated from each other according to the positions of the upper and lower slopes and the sampling times. Both the tilled and no-tilled soil samples were dominated by sequences assigned to phyla Pseudomonadota, Acidobacteriota, Bacteroidota, Verrucomicrobiota, Actinobacteriota, and Gemmatimonadota. The results showed that tillage had no significant effect compared to the no-tilled samples in the studied area. Water runoff and seasonally changed soil physical and chemical properties affected mainly the bacterial community structures.

Conservation tillage facilitates the accumulation of soil organic carbon fractions by affecting the microbial community in an eolian sandy soil

Conservation tillage (CT) is an important agronomic measure that facilitates soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation by reducing soil disturbance and plant residue mulching, thus increasing crop yields, improving soil fertility and achieving C neutrality. However, our understanding of the microbial mechanism underlying SOC fraction accumulation under different tillage practices is still lacking. Here, a 6-year in situ field experiment was carried out to explore the effects of CT and traditional tillage (CK) practices on SOC fractions in an eolian sandy soil. Compared with CK, CT increased the particulate OC (POC) content in the 0-30 cm soil layer and the mineral-associated OC (MAOC) content in the 0-20 cm soil layer. Moreover, tillage type and soil depth had significant influences on the bacterial, fungal and protistan community compositions and structures. The co-occurrence network was divided into 4 ecological modules, and module 1 exhibited significant correlations with the POC and MOC contents. After determining their topological roles, we identified the keystone taxa in the network. The results indicated that the most common bacterial taxa may result in SOC loss due to low C use efficiency, while specific fungal (Cephalotrichum) and protistan (Cercozoa) species could facilitate SOC fraction accumulation by promoting macroaggregate formation and predation. Therefore, the increase in keystone fungi and protists, as well as the reduction in bacteria, drove module 1 community function, which in turn promoted SOC sequestration under CT. These results strengthen our understanding of microbial functions in the accrual of SOC fractions, which contributes to the development of conservation agriculture on the Northeast China Plain.

Soil prokaryotic and fungal biome structures associated with crop disease status across the Japan Archipelago

Archaea, bacteria, and fungi in the soil are increasingly recognized as determinants of agricultural productivity and sustainability. A crucial step for exploring soil microbiomes with important ecosystem functions is to perform statistical analyses on the potential relationship between microbiome structure and functions based on comparisons of hundreds or thousands of environmental samples collected across broad geographic ranges. In this study, we integrated agricultural field metadata with microbial community analyses by targeting 2,903 bulk soil samples collected along a latitudinal gradient from cool-temperate to subtropical regions in Japan (26.1-42.8 °N). The data involving 632 archaeal, 26,868 bacterial, and 4,889 fungal operational taxonomic units detected across the fields of 19 crop plant species allowed us to conduct statistical analyses (permutational analyses of variance, generalized linear mixed models, randomization analyses, and network analyses) on the relationship among edaphic factors, microbiome compositions, and crop disease prevalence. We then examined whether the diverse microbes form species sets varying in potential ecological impacts on crop plants. A network analysis suggested that the observed prokaryotes and fungi were classified into several species sets (network modules), which differed substantially in association with crop disease prevalence. Within the network of microbe-to-microbe coexistence, ecologically diverse microbes, such as an ammonium-oxidizing archaeon, an antibiotics-producing bacterium, and a potentially mycoparasitic fungus, were inferred to play key roles in shifts between crop-disease-promotive and crop-disease-suppressive states of soil microbiomes. The bird's-eye view of soil microbiome structure will provide a basis for designing and managing agroecosystems with high disease-suppressive functions.IMPORTANCEUnderstanding how microbiome structure and functions are organized in soil ecosystems is one of the major challenges in both basic ecology and applied microbiology. Given the ongoing worldwide degradation of agroecosystems, building frameworks for exploring structural diversity and functional profiles of soil microbiomes is an essential task. Our study provides an overview of cropland microbiome states in light of potential crop-disease-suppressive functions. The large data set allowed us to explore highly functional species sets that may be stably managed in agroecosystems. Furthermore, an analysis of network architecture highlighted species that are potentially used to cause shifts from disease-prevalent states of agroecosystems to disease-suppressive states. By extending the approach of comparative analyses toward broader geographic ranges and diverse agricultural practices, agroecosystem with maximized biological functions will be further explored.

Core bacteria and fungi in response to residue retention and their contribution to soil multifunctionality in maize agroecosystem

Core microbiome has been proven to play crucial roles in soil function. However, we still lack knowledge on how core microbiome responds to crop residue retention, and whether they contribute to this process. Consequently, we examined the effect of residue retention on soil core and non-core microbial communities in maize seedling, mature stage and freezing period based on a multi-site field experiment in Sanjiang Plain, Northeast China. Totally, 247 bacterial amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) and 109 fungal ASVs were identified as core microbiota. Both core and non-core bacterial/fungal community composition were significantly influenced by residue retention across all study sites. Especially, the core fungal community shifted towards a saprotroph-dominated community. Normalized stochastic ratio pattern revealed that that deterministic process dominated both core and non-core microbial community assembly processes. Residue retention enhanced the deterministic process of core microbial community assembly, while exhibited opposite effect on non-core microbial community. This study also revealed that soil fungi were more sensitive to residue retention than bacteria, with a larger proportion of core fungi were enriched or depleted by residue retention. In addition, residue retention complicated core bacterial co-occurrence network, while simplified fungal network. Our results pointed out both no reduction in microbial diversity or collapse in microbial network structure after repeated freezing-thawing cycles. The potential function of core microbiome was evaluated through random forest analysis and structural equation model, the results indicated core microbiome contributed more to multifunctionality than non-core microbiome. Overall, this study strengthened our understanding of soil core microbiome in response to residue retention, and highlighted their importance in maintaining soil multifunctionality.

Effects of tillage patterns and stover mulching on N2O production, nitrogen cycling genes and microbial dynamics in black soil

Stover-covered no-tillage (NT) is of great significance to the rational utilization of stover resources and improvement of cultivated land quality, and also has a profound impact on ensuring groundwater, food and ecosystem security. However, the effects of tillage patterns and stover mulching on soil nitrogen turnover remain elusive. Based on the long-term conservation tillage field experiment in the mollisol area of Northeast China since 2007, the shotgun metagenomic sequencing of soils and microcosm incubation were combined with physical and chemical analyses, alkyne inhibition analysis to elucidate the regulatory mechanisms of NT and stover mulching on the farmland soil nitrogen emissions and microbial nitrogen cycling genes. Compared with conventional tillage (CT), NT stover mulching significantly reduced the emission of N2O instead of CO2, especially when 33% mulching was adopted, and correspondingly the nitrate nitrogen of NT33 was higher than that of other mulching amounts. The stover mulching was associated with higher total nitrogen, soil organic carbon and pH. The abundance of AOB (ammonia-oxidizing bacteria)-amoA (ammonia monooxygenase subunit A) was substantially increased by stover mulching, while the abundance of denitrification genes was reduced in most cases. Under alkyne inhibition, the tillage mode, treatment time, gas condition and interactions between them noticeably influenced the N2O emission and nitrogen transformation. In CT, NT0 (no mulching) and NT100 (full mulching), the relative contribution of AOB to N2O production was markedly higher than that of ammonia oxidizing archaea. Different tillage modes were associated with distinct microbial community composition, albeit NT100 was closer to CT than to NT0. Compared with CT, the co-occurrence network of microbial communities was more complex in NT0 and NT100. Our findings suggest that maintaining a low-quantity stover mulching could regulate soil nitrogen turnover toward proficiently enhancing soil health and regenerative agriculture, and coping with global climate change.

Dynamic response of microbial communities to thermally remediated oil-bearing drilling waste in wheat soil

The primary objective of our study was to mix thermally remediated oil-bearing drilling waste (TRODW) with farmland soil during wheat planting and explore the response of microbial phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) communities as well as the feasibility of returning TRODW to farmland. Based on environmental protection requirements and the dynamic response of wheat soil, this paper not only provides a method combining multiple models for mutual verification but also provides valuable and exploratory information for the remediation and reuse of oily solid waste. Our research found that salt damage mainly originated from sodium ions and chloride ions that inhibited the development of microbial PLFA communities in the treated soils at the initial stage. When salt damage declined, TRODW improved the levels of phosphorus, potassium, hydrolysable nitrogen and soil moisture, increasing the soil health status and promoting the development of microbial PLFA communities even when the addition ratio reached 10%. Moreover, the influences of petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metal ions on microbial PLFA community development were not significant. Therefore, when salt damage is controlled effectively and the oil content in TRODW is no more than 3‰, it is potentially feasible to return TRODW to farmland.

Vertical distribution of nutrients, enzyme activities, microbial properties, and heavy metals in zinc smelting slag site revegetated with two herb species: Implications for direct revegetation

Direct revegetation is an important measure to immobilize heavy metals and improve the microecological properties of metal smelting slag sites. However, the vertical distribution of nutrients, microecological properties, and heavy metals at a directly revegetated metal smelting slag site remains unclear. Here, the distribution characteristics of nutrients, enzyme activities, microbial properties, and heavy metals in the vertical profile at a zinc smelting slag site directly revegetated with two herb species (Lolium perenne and Trifolium repens) for 5 years were investigated. The results showed that the nutrient contents, enzyme activities, and microbial properties decreased with increasing slag depth after revegetation with the two herb species. The nutrient contents, enzyme activities, and microbial properties of the surface slag revegetated with Trifolium repens were better than those in the surface slag revegetated with Lolium perenne_. The higher root activity in the surface slag (0-30 cm) resulted in relatively higher contents of pseudo-total and available heavy metals in the surface slag. Moreover, the contents of pseudo-total heavy metals (except for Zn) and available heavy metals in the slag revegetated with Trifolium repens were lower than those in the slag revegetated with Lolium perenne at most slag depths. Overall, the greater phytoremediation efficiency of the two herb species occurred mainly in the surface slag (0-30 cm), and the phytoremediation efficiency of Trifolium repens was higher than that of Lolium perenne. The findings are beneficial for understanding the phytoremediation efficiency of direct revegetation strategies for metal smelting slag sites.

Soil bacterial community structure and functioning in a long-term conservation agriculture experiment under semi-arid rainfed production system

Soil microbial communities are important drivers of biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, organic matter decomposition, soil organic carbon, and Greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs: CO₂, N₂O, and CH₄) and are influenced by crop and soil management practices. The knowledge on the impact of conservation agriculture (CA) on soil bacterial diversity, nutrient availability, and GHG emissions in semi-arid regions under rainfed conditions is vital to develop sustainable agricultural practices, but such information has not been systemically documented. Hence, studies were conducted for 10 years in rainfed pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L.)-castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) cropping system under semi-arid conditions to assess the effects of tillage and crop residue levels on the soil bacterial diversity, enzyme activity (Dehydrogenase, urease, acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase), GHG emissions, and soil available nutrients (Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium). Sequencing of soil DNA through Illumina HiSeq-based 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing technology has revealed that bacterial community responded to both tillage and residue levels. The relative abundance of Actinobacteria in terms of Operational Taxonomic Unit (OTUs) at phyla, class as well as genera level was higher in CA (NTR1: No Tillage + 10 cm anchored residue and NTR2 NT + 30 cm anchored residue) over CT (conventional tillage without crop residues). CA resulted in higher enzyme activities (dehydrogenase, urease, acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase) and reduction in GHG emissions over CT. CA recorded 34% higher and 3% lower OC, as compared to CT, and CTR1, respectively. CA recorded 10, 34, and 26% higher available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium over CT and CTR1, respectively. NTR1 recorded 25 and 38% lower N₂O emissions as compared to CTR1 and CTR2, respectively. Whereas only NT recorded 12% higher N₂O emissions as compared to CT. Overall, the results of the study indicate that CA improves the relative abundance of soil bacterial communities, nutrient availability, and enzyme activities, and may help to contribute to the mitigation of climate change, and sustainability in rainfed areas.

Differentiation in Nitrogen Transformations and Crop Yield as Affected by Tillage Modes in a Fluvo-Aquic Soil

Nitrogen is a vital element for soil fertility and crop productivity. The transformation of nitrogen is directly affected by tillage practices for the disturbing soil. The characteristics of different nitrogen forms under different tillage modes are still unclear. A 3-year cycle tillage experiment was carried out to assess the combination of rotary tillage (RT), deep tillage (DT), and shallow rotary tillage (SRT) on nitrogen transformation and distribution, wheat yield and nitrogen balance in fluvo-aquic soil from Huang-Huai-Hai Plain in China. The results showed the rotation tillage cycle with deep tillage in the first year increased the total nitrogen (TN), and the main nitrogen form content in 0-30 cm compared with continued rotary tillage (RT-RT-RT). Moreover, the nitrate (NO₃^--N) and ammonium nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) content were improved in 20-40 cm by deep tillage practice with the highest value as 39.88 mg kg^-1 under DT-SRT-RT. The time, tillage, and depth significantly affected the different nitrogen forms, but there was no effect on dissolved organic carbon (DON) and soil microbial biomass nitrogen (SMBN) by the interaction of time and tillage. Moreover, compared with RT-RT-RT, the rotation tillage promoted the spike number and kernels per spike of wheat, further increasing the wheat yield and nitrogen partial productivity, and with a better effect under DT-SRT-RT. The NO₃^--N and NH₄⁺-N trended closer and positively correlated with wheat yield in 0-40 cm in 2019. The rotation tillage with deep tillage improved the different forms of nitrogen in 0-30 cm, wheat yield, and nitrogen partial productivity, and decreased the apparent nitrogen loss. It was suggested as the efficiency tillage practice to improve nitrogen use efficiency and crop yield in this area.

Engineering plant microbiomes by integrating eco-evolutionary principles into current strategies

Engineering plant microbiomes has the potential to improve plant health in a rapid and sustainable way. Rapidly changing climates and relatively long timelines for plant breeding make microbiome engineering an appealing approach to improving food security. However, approaches that have shown promise in the lab have not resulted in wide-scale implementation in the field. Here, we suggest the use of an integrated approach, combining mechanistic molecular and genetic knowledge, with ecological and evolutionary theory, to target knowledge gaps in plant microbiome engineering that may facilitate translatability of approaches into the field. We highlight examples where understanding microbial community ecology is essential for a holistic understanding of the efficacy and consequences of microbiome engineering. We also review examples where understanding plant-microbe evolution could facilitate the design of plants able to recruit specific microbial communities. Finally, we discuss possible trade-offs in plant-microbiome interactions that should be considered during microbiome engineering efforts so as not to introduce off-target negative effects. We include classic and emergent approaches, ranging from microbial inoculants to plant breeding to host-driven microbiome engineering, and address areas that would benefit from multidisciplinary approaches.

Climate change stress alleviation through nature based solutions: A global perspective

Global climate change stress has greatly influenced agricultural crop production which leads to the global problems such as food security. To cope with global climate change, nature based solutions (NBS) are desirable because these lead to improve our environment. Environmental stresses such as drought and salinity are big soil problems and can be eradicated by increasing soil organic matter which is directly related to soil organic carbon (SOC). SOC is one of the key components of the worldwide carbon (C) cycle. Different types of land use patterns have shown significant impacts on SOC stocks. However, their effects on the various SOC fractions are not well-understood at the global level which make it difficult to predict how SOC changes over time. We aim to investigate changes in various SOC fractions, including mineral associated organic carbon (MAOC), mineral associated organic matter (MAOM), soil organic carbon (SOC), easily oxidized organic carbon (EOC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) under various types of land use patterns (NBS), including cropping pattern, residue management, conservation tillages such as no tillage (NT) and reduced tillage (RT) using data from 97 studies on a global scale. The results showed that NT overall increased MAOC, MAOM, SOC, MBC, EOC and POC by 16.2%, 26.8%, 24.1%, 16.2%, 27.9% and 33.2% (P < 0.05) compared to CT. No tillage with residue retention (NTR) increased MAOC, MAOM, SOC, MBC, EOC and POC by 38.0%, 29.9%, 47.5%, 33.1%, 35.7% and 49.0%, respectively, compared to CT (P < 0.05). RT overall increased MAOC, MAOM, SOC, MBC, EOC and POC by 36.8%, 14.1%, 25.8%, 25.9, 18.7% and 16.6% (P < 0.05) compared to CT. Reduced tillage with residue retention (RTR) increased MAOM, SOC and POC by 14.2%, 36.2% and 30.7%, respectively, compared to CT (P < 0.05). Multiple cropping increased MAOC, MBC and EOC by 14.1%, 39.8% and 21.5%, respectively, compared to mono cropping (P < 0.05). The response ratios of SOC fractions (MAOC, MAOM, SOC, MBC, EOC and POC) under NT and RT were mostly influenced by NBS such as residue management, cropping pattern along with soil depth, mean annual precipitation, mean annual temperature and soil texture. Our findings imply that when assessing the effects of conservation tillage methods on SOC sequestration, SOC fractions especially those taking part in driving soil biological activities, should be taken into account rather than total SOC. We conclude that conservation tillages under multiple cropping systems and with retention of crop residues enhance soil carbon sequestration as compared to CT in varying edaphic and climatic conditions of the world.

Responses of soil mineral-associated and particulate organic carbon to carbon input: A meta-analysis

A minor change of soil organic carbon (SOC) greatly influences atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration and climate change. Exogenous carbon (C) input into soils can induce SOC decomposition or sequestration. The response of SOC to C input can be better understood when SOC is separated into mineral-associated (MAOC) and particulate (POC) organic carbon. The objective of this study is to explore whether exogenous C input promote MAOC and POC increase or decrease and the controlling factors. We gained 1181 observations from 17 studies for this meta-analysis. The effect sizes of exogenous C input on MAOC and POC content, and MAOC decomposition were calculated. The key factors influencing the effect sizes were explored through subgroup analysis. Potential publication bias was explored by using funnel plots, trim and fill method, and Egger's test. Exogenous C input significantly increased MAOC and POC content, although promoted MAOC decomposition. The effect sizes were larger for MAOC content than for POC content irrespective of soil and substrate properties and experiment methods. The effects of C input on MAOC and POC content were more pronounced in forest soils, and depended on the C and nitrogen (N) content in soil and substrates as well as experiment methods. The effect size of C input on MAOC decomposition were larger with substrate input of below 200 g C kg^-1 in specific soils. The sensitivity analysis carried out by removing one observation indicated our results were robust. In conclusion, exogenous C input increases MAOC and POC content although stimulate MAOC decomposition, and the effect sizes were influenced mainly by ecosystem type, carbon and nitrogen content of substrates and soils, and fractionation methods. The findings indicate the importance of C and N content in substrates and soils in controlling the response of SOC rather than the ratio of C to N.

Low-disturbance farming regenerates healthy deep soil toward sustainable agriculture - Evidence from long-term no-tillage with stover mulching in Mollisols

Currently, global agricultural development is in a critical period, as it contends with a growing population, degraded farmland, and serious environmental issues. Although low-disturbance practices are recommended to improve soil health, it is unclear whether such practices benefit critical deep soil functioning. Here, we compared the soil bacterial communities and physicochemical parameters across 3-m deep soil profiles in a Mollisol of Northeast China at the end of the dormant season after 10 years of farming under conventional tillage without stover mulching (CT), no-tillage without stover mulching (NTNS), and no-tillage with stover mulching (NTSM). We found that low-disturbance practices (NTNS and NTSM), compared with CT, evidently promoted soil bacterial species richness and diversity and enriched potential metabolic diversity. When compared to the bacterial communities in CT, the vertical dissimilarity of bacterial communities in NTNS decreased, while that in NTSM increased, indicating that no-tillage alone homogenized the composition of the bacterial community through soil depth profiles, but straw mulching enhanced the uniqueness of community composition at each layer. In comparison to CT, no-tillage with stover mulching significantly increased the soil water content and root-associated organic carbon (SEOC), and decreased soil pH. Mineral nitrogen declined with depth to 60 cm and then increased to its maximum at 250-300 cm under CT and at 120-150 cm under NTNS and NTSM. More mineral nitrogen at 0-150 cm under low-disturbance practices would provide more available nitrogen for crops in the coming growing season, while the accumulated nitrogen at 150-300 cm under CT may leach into the groundwater. Taken together, our results show that low-disturbance practices can regenerate whole-soil bacterial diversity and potential function, and promote water retention and nitrogen holding capacity within the root zone, thus reducing the dose of nitrogen fertilizer and mitigating nitrogen contamination to deep groundwater, ultimately contributing to agricultural sustainability in Mollisol regions.

Soil carbon sequestration - An interplay between soil microbial community and soil organic matter dynamics

Soil carbon sequestration (SCS) refers to the uptake of carbon (C) containing substances from the atmosphere and its storage in soil C pools. Soil microbial community (SMC) play a major role in C cycling and their activity has been considered as the main driver of differences in the potential to store C in soils. The composition of the SMC is crucial for the maintenance of soil ecosystem services, as the structure and activity of SMC also regulates the turnover and delivery of nutrients, as well as the rate of decomposition of soil organic matter (SOM). Quantifying the impact of agricultural practices on both SMC and SCS is key to improve sustainability of soil management. Hence, we discuss the impact of farming practices improving SCS by altering SMC, SOM, and soil aggregates, unraveling their inter-and intra-relationships. Using quantitative and process driven insights from 197 peer-reviewed publications leads to the conclusion that the net benefits from agricultural management to improve SCS would not be sustainable if we overlook the role of soil microbial community. Reintroduction of the decayed microbial community to agricultural soils is crucial for enhancing long-term C storage potential of soils and stabilize them over time. The interactions among SMC, SOM, soil aggregates, and agricultural activities still require more knowledge and research to understand their full contribution to the SCS.

Factors shaping soil organic carbon stocks in grass covered orchards across China: A meta-analysis

Orchard grass coverage has been widely adopted to increase fruit yield by improving soil fertility. However, the impact of the environment on the changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks consecutive to orchard grass coverage remain poorly quantified at a large scale. The present study aimed to examine the responses of SOC stocks to grass coverage at a soil depth of 0-30 cm in orchards compared to clean tillage. A total of 342 observations across China from 139 peer-reviewed publications were subjected to meta-analysis. Aggregated boosted tree analysis was performed, evaluating the determinants of SOC stocks, such as plant traits (e.g., fruit tree type, grass type, orchard age, and grass age), edaphic variables (e.g., initial SOC and nitrogen concentration, soil pH, and soil clay content), climatic factors (e.g., mean annual precipitation (MAP) and mean annual temperature (MAT)), and management practices (e.g., grass source, grass growing mode, fertilization, grass mowing, placement of mowed residues, and irrigation). On average, orchard grass coverage significantly enhanced SOC stocks by 21.47% (percentage change) compared to clean tillage. Biotic and abiotic factors influenced this increase in SOC stocks following grass coverage in orchards to different extents. Grass age and soil clay content were the main determinants driving the variation in the SOC stocks following grass coverage in orchards. Thus, we propose an efficient way to optimize C sequestration in grass covered orchards, regarding plant traits, climatic factors, edaphic variables, and management practices. Longer than 12 months of surface grass coverage with cultivated grass species in mature deciduous fruit orchards (≥5 years) efficiently increased SOC stocks. This is particularly the case for acidic (pH < 6.5) soils with low C content (SOM < 15 g kg^-1) in areas with suitable rainfall and temperature conditions (MAP ≥ 400 mm, MAT ≥ 10 °C). Collectively, this meta-analysis identified orchard grass coverage as a promising practice for significantly increasing SOC stocks at 0-30 cm across large geospatial locations in China.

A Review of Crop Husbandry and Soil Management Practices Using Meta-Analysis Studies: Towards Soil-Improving Cropping Systems

Coherent improvements in crop varieties and crop husbandry and soil management practices are needed to increase global crop production in a sustainable manner. However, these practices are often discussed separately, and as a result there is little overview. Here, we present a database and synthesis of 154 meta-analysis studies related to ten main crop husbandry and soil management practices, including crop type and rotations, tillage, drainage, nutrient management, irrigation and fertigation, weed management, pest management, crop residue management, mechanization and technology, and landscape management. Most meta-analysis studies were related to tillage (55), followed by crop type and rotations (32), nutrient management (25), crop residue management (19), and irrigation and fertigation (18). Few studies were related to landscape management (6) and mechanization and technology (2). In terms of outcome, studies focused on crop yield and quality (81), soil quality (73), and environmental impacts (56), and little on economic effects (7) or resource use efficiency (24). Reported effects of alternative practices, relative to conventional practice, were positive in general. Effect sizes were relatively large for environmental effects (nutrient leaching, greenhouse gas emissions), and small for soil quality (except for soil life) and crop yield. Together, meta-analysis studies indicate that there is large scope for increasing cropland productivity and minimizing environmental impacts. A roadmap is provided for integration and optimization of all ten practices, and recommendations are formulated to address the gaps in meta-analysis studies.

Impacts of short-term tillage and crop residue incorporation managements on soil microbial community in a double-cropping rice field

Soil microbial community were usually reconsidered as a sensitive indicator in soil quality and soil environment change of paddy field. However, the effects of different tillage and crop residue incorporation managements on soil bacterial community under the double-cropping rice cropping system were still need to further investigated. Therefore, the impacts of different tillage and crop residue incorporation managements on soil bacterial community under the double-cropping rice cropping system in southern of China were studied by using phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) profile method in the present paper. The experiment included four different tillage treatments: rotary tillage without crop residue input as a control (RTO), no-tillage with crop residue retention (NT), rotary tillage with crop residue incorporation (RT), and conventional tillage with crop residue incorporation (CT). Compared with RTO treatment, grain yield of rice with NT, RT and CT treatments increased by 1.21%, 3.13% and 6.40%, respectively. This results showed that soil aC15:0, C16:0, iC17:0, C19:0c9, 10 fatty acids with CT and RT treatments were higher than that of RTO treatment, while soil C16:1ω6c and C18:1ω9t fatty acids with NT treatment were higher than that of RTO treatment, respectively. Soil G⁺ and G⁻ bacteria PLFAs contents with CT treatment were higher than that of NT, RT and RTO treatments, while the value of soil G⁺/G⁻ bacteria PLFAs with NT treatment were higher than that of CT, RT and RTO treatments. This results indicated that Richness and McIntosh indices with CT treatment were significantly higher than that of RTO treatment. Principal component analysis (PCA) results showed that the first and second principal components (PC1 and PC2) were explained 93.2% of total variance with all tillage treatments. Except C12:0, C14:0 2OH and C18:2ω6, all unsaturated and cyclopropyl PLFAs contents were belong to PC1. PC1 and PC2 were explained 88.4% of total variance with all tillage treatments. There had significantly positive correlation between soil Richness, Shannon indices and soil PLFAs, G⁺ bacteria, G⁻ bacteria, fungi contents. As a result, it were benefit practices for increasing soil bacterial community structure in the double-cropping rice field of southern China by combined application of rotary, conventional tillage with crop residue incorporation managements.

Diversity of nitrogen cycling genes at a Midwest long-term ecological research site with different management practices

Nitrogen fertilizer results in the release of nitrous oxide (N₂O), a concern because N₂O is an ozone-depleting substance and a greenhouse gas. Although the reduction of N₂O to nitrogen gas can control emissions, the factors impacting the enzymes involved have not been fully explored. The current study investigated the abundance and diversity of genes involved in nitrogen cycling (primarily denitrification) under four agricultural management practices (no tillage [NT], conventional tillage [CT], reduced input, biologically-based). The work involved examining soil shotgun sequencing data for nine genes (napA, narG, nirK, nirS, norB, nosZ, nirA, nirB, nifH). For each gene, relative abundance values, diversity and richness indices, and taxonomic classification were determined. Additionally, the genes associated with nitrogen metabolism (defined by the KEGG hierarchy) were examined. The data generated were statistically compared between the four management practices. The relative abundance of four genes (nifH, nirK, nirS, and norB) were significantly lower in the NT treatment compared to one or more of the other soils. The abundance values of napA, narG, nifH, nirA, and nirB were not significantly different between NT and CT. The relative abundance of nirS was significantly higher in the CT treatment compared to the others. Diversity and richness values were higher for four of the nine genes (napA, narG, nirA, nirB). Based on nirS/nirK ratios, CT represents the highest N₂O consumption potential in four soils. In conclusion, the microbial communities involved in nitrogen metabolism were sensitive to different agricultural practices, which in turn, likely has implications for N₂O emissions.
