Intensive land uses modify assembly process and potential metabolic function of edaphic bacterial communities in the Yellow River Delta, China

Response of microbial community to different media in start-up period of Annan constructed wetland in Beijing of China

Microbial community, as the decomposers of constructed wetland (CW), plays crucial role in biodegradation and biotransformation of pollutants, nutrient cycling and the maintenance of ecosystem balance. In this study, 9 water samples, 6 sediment samples, and 8 plant samples were collected in Annan CW, which has the functions of water treatment and wetland culture park. The characteristics of microbial community structure in different media were illustrated by using of high-throughput sequencing-based metagenomics approach and statistical analysis. Meanwhile, this study identified and classified human pathogens in CW to avoid potential risks to human health. The results showed that dominant bacteria phyla in CW include Proteobacteria, Bacteroides, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and Verrucomicrobia. The distribution of microorganisms in three media is different, but not significant. And the pH and DO profoundly affected microbe abundance, followed by water temperature. The microbial diversity in sediments is the highest, which is similar with the detection of human pathogens in sediments. Moreover, compared with Calamus, Lythrum salicaria and Reed, Scirpus tabernaemontani has fewer pathogenic microorganisms. The distribution of microorganisms in the CW is complex, and a variety of human pathogens are detected, which is more prone to create potential risks to human health and should receive additional attention.

Functional redundancy in response to runoff input upholds microbial community in hydrocarbon-contaminated land-sea continuum

An experimental approach mimicking the land-sea continuum in microcosms was developed in order to determine the effect of the terrigenous inputs by soil runoff on the microbial functional potential in hydrocarbon (HC) contaminated marine coastal sediment. We hypothesized that the coalescent event increases the functional potential of microbial communities in marine coastal sediments, influencing the fate of HC in marine coastal ecosystems. The microbial functional potential including the HC degradation ability was assessed by DNA-array to compare the sediment receiving or not terrigenous inputs. The removal of HC and the functional gene richness in sediment was unchanged with the terrigenous inputs. However, the gene variants (GVs) composition was modified indicating functional redundancy. In addition, functional indicators including GVs related to sulfite reduction, denitrification and polyaromatic degradation were identified in higher proportion in sediment receiving terrigenous inputs. The terrigenous inputs modified the functional co-occurrence networks, showing a reorganization of the GVs associations with an increase of the network complexity. Different keystone GVs ensuring similar functions were identified in networks with or without terrigenous inputs, further confirming functional redundancy. We argue that functional redundancy maintains the structure of microbial community in hydrocarbon-contaminated land-sea continuum mixing zone. Our results provide helpful functional information for the monitoring and management of coastal environment affected by human land-based activities.

Effects of Long-Term (17 Years) Nitrogen Input on Soil Bacterial Community in Sanjiang Plain: The Largest Marsh Wetland in China

Increased nitrogen (N) input from natural factors and human activities may negatively impact the health of marsh wetlands. However, the understanding of how exogenous N affects the ecosystem remains limited. We selected the soil bacterial community as the index of ecosystem health and performed a long-term N input experiment, including four N levels of 0, 6, 12, and 24 gN·m-2·a-1 (denoted as CK, C1, C2, and C3, respectively). The results showed that a high-level N (24 gN·m-2·a-1) input could significantly reduce the Chao index and ACE index for the bacterial community and inhibit some dominant microorganisms. The RDA results indicated that TN and NH4+ were the critical factors influencing the soil microbial community under the long-term N input. Moreover, the long-term N input was found to significantly reduce the abundance of Azospirillum and Desulfovibrio, which were typical N-fixing microorganisms. Conversely, the long-term N input was found to significantly increase the abundance of Nitrosospira and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, which were typical nitrifying and denitrifying microorganisms. Increased soil N content has been suggested to inhibit the N fixation function of the wetland and exert a positive effect on the processes of nitrification and denitrification in the wetland ecosystem. Our research can be used to improve strategies to protect wetland health.

Microorganisms in coastal wetland sediments: a review on microbial community structure, functional gene, and environmental potential

Coastal wetlands (CW) are the junction of the terrestrial and marine ecosystems and have special ecological compositions and functions, which are important for maintaining biogeochemical cycles. Microorganisms inhabiting in sediments play key roles in the material cycle of CW. Due to the variable environment of CW and the fact that most CW are affected by human activities and climate change, CW are severely degraded. In-depth understanding of the community structure, function, and environmental potential of microorganisms in CW sediments is essential for wetland restoration and function enhancement. Therefore, this paper summarizes microbial community structure and its influencing factors, discusses the change patterns of microbial functional genes, reveals the potential environmental functions of microorganisms, and further proposes future prospects about CW studies. These results provide some important references for promoting the application of microorganisms in material cycling and pollution remediation of CW.

Soil Bacterial Community Structure in Different Micro-Habitats on the Tidal Creek Section in the Yellow River Estuary

Tidal creeks have attracted considerable attention in estuary wetland conservation and restoration with diverse micro-habitats and high hydrological connectivity. Bacterial communities act effectively as invisible engines to regulate nutrient element biogeochemical processes. However, few studies have unveiled the bacterial community structures and diversities of micro-habitats soils on the tidal creek section. Our study selected three sections cross a tidal creek with obviously belt-like habitats “pluff mudflat – bare mudflat – Tamarix chinensis community – T. chinensis-Suaeda salsa community– S. salsa community” in the Yellow River estuarine wetland. Based on soil samples, we dissected and untangled the bacterial community structures and special bacterial taxa of different habitats on the tidal creek section. The results showed that bacterial community structures and dominant bacterial taxa were significantly different in the five habitats. The bacterial community diversities significantly decreased with distance away from tidal creeks, as well as the dominant bacteria Flavobacteriia and δ-Proteobacteria, but in reverse to Bacteroidetes and Gemmatimonadetes. Moreover, the important biomarkers sulfate-reducing bacteria and photosynthetic bacteria were different distributions within the five habitats, which were closely associated with the sulfur and carbon cycles. We found that the bacterial communities were heterogeneous in different micro-habitats on the tidal creek section, which was related to soil salinity, moisture, and nutrients as well as tidal action. The study would provide fundamental insights into understanding the ecological functions of bacterial diversities and biogeochemical processes influenced by tidal creeks.

Soil organic matter and salinity as critical factors affecting the bacterial community and function of Phragmites australis dominated riparian and coastal wetlands

Soil salinization poses a great threat to the natural ecosystem and interferes with the structure and function of the biological community, resulting in different vegetation distributions. However, little attention is paid to the changes in microbial community in different wetland types with the same vegetation. In this study, the Yellow River Delta was used as a model because of its typical and extensive distribution of Phragmites australis-dominated saltwater and freshwater wetlands. We investigated the differences in the structure and function of bacterial communities, as well as their relationships with soil properties in coastal (Zone A) and riparian (Zone B) wetlands. Results showed higher salinity and pH in Zone A than Zone B (p < 0.05), whereas TN (p < 0.05) and SOM were lower than those in Zone B. Significant differences existed in microbial community composition between Zones A and B. The nitrifying-bacteria Nitrospira and norank_f_Nitrosomonadaceae had high abundance in Zones A and B. Alcanivorax, Halomonas, and Marinobacter were extensively distributed in Zone A, whereas Flavobacterium and Pseudomonas were dominant in Zone B, indicating the diversity characteristics of denitrifying bacteria. Conversely, methane-oxidizing bacteria Methylophaga were significantly higher in Zone A than in Zone B (p < 0.05), indicating that high salinity was conducive to aerobic methane oxidation and that the genetic diversity at strain level endowed it with a certain denitrification potential. Salinity and SOM played important roles in shaping microbial community at phylum and genus levels. The gene abundances related to xenobiotics metabolism and repair were high in Zone A, whereas the genes encoding energy metabolism and signal transduction were relatively high in Zone B. Denitrification was more favored for the low-salinity Zone B, whereas methane oxidation was enriched in the high-salinity Zone A. Therefore, our study emphasized the importance of an in-depth understanding of the microbial-community structure and function in Phragmites australis-dominated saltwater and freshwater wetlands.
