Microalgae-mediated bioremediation: current trends and opportunities-a review

Environmental pollution poses a critical global challenge, and traditional wastewater treatment methods often prove inadequate in addressing the complexity and scale of this issue. On the other hand, microalgae exhibit diverse metabolic capabilities that enable them to remediate a wide range of pollutants, including heavy metals, organic contaminants, and excess nutrients. By leveraging the unique metabolic pathways of microalgae, innovative strategies can be developed to effectively remediate polluted environments. Therefore, this review paper highlights the potential of microalgae-mediated bioremediation as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to conventional methods. It also highlights the advantages of utilizing microalgae and algae-bacteria co-cultures for large-scale bioremediation applications, demonstrating impressive biomass production rates and enhanced pollutant removal efficiency. The promising potential of microalgae-mediated bioremediation is emphasized, presenting a viable and innovative alternative to traditional treatment methods in addressing the global challenge of environmental pollution. This review identifies the opportunities and challenges for microalgae-based technology and proposed suggestions for future studies to tackle challenges. The findings of this review advance our understanding of the potential of microalgae-based technology wastewater treatment.

Impact of transportation infrastructure and urbanization on environmental pollution: evidence from novel wavelet quantile correlation approach

In terms of achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs), the developing economies are facing many issues, and one of the key issues is environmental degradation. Being a developing economy, Pakistan is also experiencing thought-provoking impacts of global warming and still far away from the ideal track of sustainable development. For addressing environment-related issue and achieving the targets of SDGs, a policy-level reorientation might be necessary. In this view, this study investigates the impact of economic growth, transport infrastructure, urbanization, financial development, and renewable energy consumption on CO2 emissions by using the data of Pakistan during 1990-2020. For this purpose, we use novel wavelet quantile correlation approach. The empirical results of wavelet quantile correlation approach demonstrate that economic growth, transport infrastructure, urbanization, and financial development are responsible for environmental pollution. Whereas, result also claims that renewable energy consumption is a useful tool for reducing environmental pollution in Pakistan. Moreover, the results of FMOLS approach show that 1% increase in economic growth, transportation infrastructure, urbanization, and financial development increases CO2 emissions by 0.240, 0.010, 0.478, and 0.102%, respectively. However, 1% increase in renewable energy usage reduces CO2 emission by 1.083%. Based on the empirical outcomes, this study proposes comprehensive policy framework for achieving the targets of SDG 7 (clean energy), SDG 8 (economic growth), SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities), and SDG 13 (climate action).

Measuring sediment loads and particle size distribution in road runoff: Implications for sediment removal by stormwater control measures

Road runoff contributes an array of pollutants which degrade the quality of receiving waters. Sediment conveyed in runoff results in loss of habitat and loss of reservoir capacity, among other undesirable impacts. To select and design stormwater control measures (SCMs), the sediment particle size distribution (PSD) is needed to quantify the required hydraulic retention time for particle settling and to understand what other treatment processes (e.g., filtration) are needed to meet sediment removal targets. A two-year field monitoring study was undertaken across the state of Ohio, USA, to evaluate the PSD of sediment in runoff at twelve roads. The highest TSS concentrations were observed on interstate highways (highest annual average daily traffic [AADT]) and minor arterials (low AADT), suggesting factors beyond AADT, such as antecedent dry period, rainfall intensity, and windborne dust and particulates, contribute to the varied sediment characteristics in runoff. The median TSS load across all samples collected was 2.7 kg/ha per storm event, while annual TSS loads for the monitoring sites varied from 98 kg/(ha·yr) to 519 kg/(ha·yr), with a mean value of 271 kg/(ha·yr). Particle size distributions varied across the monitoring sites, with mean and median d50 of 48.6 μm and 52.5 μm, respectively. Interstate highways (highest AADT) had significantly finer PSDs than other functional classes, while roads in low density residential areas had coarser PSDs than other land uses. Observed differences in PSD across road characteristics may guide SCM selection; dry detention basins and wet ponds/wetlands were predicted to provide effective removal across a variety of PSDs, while TSS reductions provided by hydrodynamic separators and high-flow media filters (which effectively remove larger particles) may be maximized in areas with coarser PSDs (e.g., roads surrounded by low density residential areas studied herein).

New conceptualization and quantification method of first-flush in urban catchments: A modelling study

A major challenge for runoff pollution control lies in the quantification and identification of the first-flush. At present, there is a lack of reasonable theoretical methods to guide engineering practices. To remedy this deficiency, a novel method of cumulative pollutant mass vs. cumulative runoff volume (M(V)) curve simulation is proposed in this study. Subsequently, the first-flush phenomenon was redefined based on the M(V) curve simulation and demonstrate that the first-flush exists until the derivative of the simulated M(V) curve is equal to 1 (F_t' = 1). Consequently, a mathematical model for first-flush quantification was developed. The Root-Mean-Square-Deviation (RMSD) and Pearson's Correlation Coefficient (PCC), as objective functions, were used to evaluate the performance of the model and the Elementary-Effect (EE) method was used to analyze the sensitivity of the parameters. The results indicated the satisfactory accuracy of the M(V) curve simulation and first-flush quantitative mathematical model. The NSE values exceeding 0.8 and 0.938, respectively, were obtained by analyzing 19 rainfall-runoff data for Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China. The wash-off coefficient "r" was demonstrably the most sensitive factor influencing the model performance. Therefore, interactions between "r" and the other model parameters should be focused on to highlight the overall sensitivities. Overall, this study posits a novel paradigm shift from the traditional dimensionless definition criterion to redefine and quantify first-flush, which has significant implications for urban water environment management.

Environmental impacts and risks of bridges and tunnels across lakes: An overview

Bridges and tunnels are built across lakes, especially in China, to improve road connectivity for transportation. However, their environmental impacts and risks have not received adequate attention. In this study, the magnitude of bridges and tunnels across 142 lakes in China were investigated. The investigation revealed that 37 bridges and 10 tunnels (a total length of 56.82 km) were built across 26 lakes during 2000-2020. From 2011 to 2020, the construction rate of bridges and tunnels across lakes in China was ∼6 times higher than the average value worldwide. Their environmental impacts and risks on lakes were summarised by analyzing previous publications screened from the Web of Science platform. The environmental impacts and risks during the bridge/tunnel construction period generally include decrease in water exchange, habitat destruction, biological reduction, increase in suspended solids, and water quality pollution. Tunnel construction may also affect the ecological conditions of groundwater due to its disturbances in the underground area. During the bridge/tunnel operation period, environmental impacts and risks were mainly induced by rainfall events and water pollution accidents. The impacts and risks were highly related to the construction location, bridge/tunnel properties, moving vehicles, fixing activities, and atmospheric deposition. Owing to the existing weaknesses in management practices, a framework, aiming to reduce the environmental impacts and risks caused by bridges and tunnels across lakes, was proposed. The framework identified the critical issues and their corresponding management strategies during the bridge/tunnel construction and operation periods and enabled the generation of the best management strategy for each specific period.

Receptor model-oriented sources and risks evaluation of metals in sediments of an industrial affected riverine system in Bangladesh

Toxic metals in river sediments may represent significant ecological concerns, although there has been limited research on the source-oriented ecological hazards of metals in sediments. Surface sediments from an industrial affected Rupsa River were utilized in this study to conduct a complete investigation of toxic metals with source-specific ecological risk assessment. The findings indicated that the average concentration of Ni, Cr, Cd, Zn, As, Cu, Mn and Pb were 50.60 ± 10.97, 53.41 ± 7.76, 3.25 ± 1.73, 147.76 ± 36.78, 6.41 ± 1.85, 59.78 ± 17.77, 832.43 ± 71.56 and 25.64 ± 7.98 mg/kg, respectively and Cd, Ni, Cu, Pb and Zn concentration were higher than average shale value. Based on sediment quality guidelines, the mean effective range median (ERM) quotient (1.29) and Mean probable effect level (PEL) quotient (2.18) showed medium-high contamination in sediment. Ecological indexes like toxic risk index (20.73), Nemerow integrated risk index (427.59) and potential ecological risk index (610.66) posed very high sediment pollution. The absolute principle component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) model indicated that Zn (64.21%), Cd (51.58%), Cu (67.32%) and Ni (58.49%) in APCS-MLR model whereas Zn (49.5%), Cd (52.7%), Cu (57.4%) and Ni (44.6%) in PMF model were derived from traffic emission, agricultural activities, industrial source and mixed sources. PMF model-based Nemerow integrated risk index (NIRI) reported that industrial emission posed considerable and high risks for 87.27% and 12.72% of sediment samples. This work will provide a model-based guidelines for identifying and assessing metal sources which would be suitable for mitigating future pollution hazards in Riverine sediments in Bangladesh.

Microbial source tracking of fecal contamination in stormwater runoff

Concerns over fecal contamination in stormwater canals have promoted the need for pollution control strategies, including the use of microbial source tracking, to identify fecal contamination in the Greater New Orleans Area. Surface water samples were collected over a 12-month period at five canal locations within Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction and the IDEXX method were used to assess the concentrations of coliforms, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and human fecal 183 bacteroides (HF183) in stormwater samples. A 100% positive detection rate of total coliforms and E. coli was observed across all tested sites. Despite the closeness of the five sites, when averaged across all sampling time points, Kruskal-Wallis tests indicated that E. coli was present at significantly different concentrations in these locations (χ²(5) = 19.8, p = 0.0005). HF183 was detected in 62% of the water samples collected during the stormwater sampling. Without further testing for HF183 markers, the conclusion from this study would have been that fecal contamination from an unknown source was always present at varying levels during the study period. Analysis of HF183 markers therefore adds another layer of conclusions to the results deductible from E. coli concentrations. A 100% E. coli detection rate, high E. coli concentrations coupled with low rates of HF183 detection particularly at the Esplanade, Poplar Street, and Bonnabel Boat Launch sites, the sites closest to the lake outlet, throughout the study period, indicate that fecal contamination at these stormwater canal sites comes primarily from non-human sources. However, the Metairie Road and Napoleon Avenue sites, which have the highest HF183 detection rates, on top of chronic pollution by other non-human sources, are also influenced by human fecal pollution, possibly because of human development and faulty infrastructure. This study highlights the advantages of the use of microbial source-tracking methods to complement traditional indicator bacteria.

Leaching risks of antibiotic resistance genes in urban underlying surface sediments during the simulated stormwater runoff and its controls

Recently, increasing attention has been paid to antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in urban stormwater runoff. However, no available literature could be found on ARGs leaching from urban underlying surface sediments during stormwater runoff. In this study, surface sediments from commercial public squares around Nanjing (China) was selected for the investigation of target ARGs leaching kinetics, showing that absolute abundances of target ARGs desorption reached at the equilibrium during leaching time of 120-240min with all of the desorption efficiencies about 30%, indicating that there would be low proportion of leaching ARGs in the total ARGs migrating with runoff during rainfall events. Five target ARGs leaching including intI1 (clinic), strA, strB, tetM and tetX can be better described by the pseudo-second-order equation, while qacEdelta1 leaching can be better described by the pseudo-first-order equation, and the leaching for both sul1 and sul2 can be well described by the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order equations. The effects of environmental factors including S/L ratios, pH values and water temperatures indicated that leaching efficiencies of target ARGs enhanced significantly with the increase of S/L ratios and water temperatures, but decreased with the increase of pH values. The transmission experiments after the simulated solar irradiation and heat implied that both large solar UV irradiation (30W/m²) and high temperature (40℃) were conducive to conjugation and transformation frequencies of ARGs. Furthermore, both high Cao and medium PAM levels could be effective for blocking ARGs transmission in the leachate from underlying surface sediments.

Review of tools for road runoff quality prediction and application to European roads

Pollutants discharged by roads may impact water bodies and soils. The best method to characterise road runoff is by monitoring, which is not always possible due to human or material constraints. Therefore, prediction tools can be a valuable method to manage road runoff discharges and protect the environment. The present work reviewed and evaluated international tools for road runoff quality prediction, in order to assess if an existing tool could be suitable for wide usage by stakeholders in Europe. Four tools from the USA and Europe were selected and tested at 22 road sites located in regions with annual precipitation values ranging from 500 to 1,000 mm, from seven European countries. The results for the site median concentration (SMC) of total suspended solids (TSS), Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd showed coefficients of determination (R²) from 0.0004 to 0.2890 for the different pollutants and tools. It was concluded that none of the tools could predict the road runoff pollutant concentrations, except for the country where it had been calibrated. The findings support practitioners and researchers all over the world, pointing out directions, and gaps to be filled, regarding the management of road runoff discharges and use of prediction tools.

Effect of ZnO nanoparticles on Zn, Cu, and Pb dissolution in a green bioretention system for urban stormwater remediation

Stormwater runoff from urban and suburban areas can carry hazardous pollutants directly into aquatic ecosystems. These pollutants, such as metals, nutrients, aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals, are very toxic to aquatic organisms. Recently, significant amounts of zinc oxide engineered nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) have been detected in urban stormwater and its bioretention systems. This raises concerns about a potential increase of stormwater toxicity and reduced performance of the treatment infrastructures. To tackle these issues, we developed a simple, low-cost bioretention system to remediate stormwater and retain ZnO-NPs. This system retained up to 73% Zn, 66% Cu, and >99% Pb. However, the removal efficiency for Pb was lower after adding ZnO-NPs to the system, possibly due to the remobilization of Pb phosphates. The effect of ZnO-NPs on stormwater toxicity and metal accumulation in wetland plants was also evaluated.
