Bead-immobilized Pseudomonas stutzeri Y2 prolongs functions to degrade s-triazine herbicides in industrial wastewater and maize fields

Remediation of petroleum-contaminated site soil by bioaugmentation with immobilized bacterial pellets stimulated by a controlled-release oxygen composite

Bioaugmentation techniques still show drawbacks in the cleanup of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) from petroleum-contaminated site soil. Herein, this study explored high-performance immobilized bacterial pellets (IBPs) embed Microbacterium oxydans with a high degrading capacity, and developed a controlled-release oxygen composite (CROC) that allows the efficient, long-term release of oxygen. Tests with four different microcosm incubations were performed to assess the effects of IBPs and CROC on the removal of TPHs from petroleum-contaminated site soil. The results showed that the addition of IBPs and/or CROC could significantly promote the remediation of TPHs in soil. A CROC only played a significant role in the degradation of TPHs in deep soil. The combined application of IBPs and CROC had the best effect on the remediation of deep soil, and the removal rate of TPHs reached 70%, which was much higher than that of nature attenuation (13.2%) and IBPs (43.0%) or CROC (31.9%) alone. In particular, the CROC could better promote the degradation of heavy distillate hydrocarbons (HFAs) in deep soil, and the degradation rates of HFAs increased from 6.6% to 33.2%-21.0% and 67.9%, respectively. In addition, the IBPs and CROC significantly enhanced the activity of dehydrogenase, catalase, and lipase in soil. Results of the enzyme activity were the same as that of TPH degradation. The combined application of IBPs and CROC not only increased the microbial abundance and diversity of soil, but also significantly enhanced the enrichment of potential TPH-biodegrading bacteria. M. oxydans was dominant in AP (bioaugmentation with addition of IBPs) and APO (bioaugmentation with the addition of IBPs and CROC) microcosms that added IBPs. Overall, the IBPs and CROC developed in this study provide a novel option for the combination of bioaugmentation and biostimulation for remediating organic pollutants in soil.

Exploration of the biodegradation pathway and enhanced removal of imazethapyr from soil by immobilized Bacillus marcorestinctum YN1

Excessive or inappropriate applications of imazethapyr cause severe ecological deteriorations and health risks in human. A novel bacterial strain, i.e., Bacillus marcorestinctum YN1, was isolated to efficiently degrade imazethapyr, with the degradation pathways and intermediates predicted. Protein mass spectrometry analysis identified enzymes in strain YN1 potentially involved in imazethapyr biodegradation, including methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase, carbon-nitrogen family hydrolase, heme degrading monooxygenase, and cytochrome P450. The strain YN1 was further immobilized with biochar (BC600) prepared from mushroom waste (i.e., spent mushroom substrate) by pyrolysis at 600 °C to evaluate its degrading characteristics of imazethapyr. Scanning electron microscope observation showed that strain YN1 was adsorbed in the rich pore structure of BC600 and the adsorption efficiency reached the maximum level of 88.02% in 6 h. Both energy dispersive X-ray and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses showed that BC600 contained many elements and functional groups. The results of liquid chromatography showed that biochar-immobilized strain YN1 (IBC-YN1) improved the degradation rate of imazethapyr from 79.2% to 87.4%. The degradation rate of imazethapyr by IBC-YN1 could still reach 81.0% in the third recycle, while the bacterial survival rate was 67.73% after 180 d storage at 4 °C. The treatment of IBC-YN1 significantly shortened the half-life of imazethapyr in non-sterilized soil from 35.51 to 11.36 d, and the vegetative growth of imazethapyr sensitive crop plant (i.e., Cucumis sativus L.) was significantly increased in soil remediated, showing that the inhibition rate of root length and fresh weight were decreased by 12.45% and 38.49% respectively. This study exhanced our understanding of microbial catabolism of imazethapyr, and provided a potential in situ remediation strategy for improving the soil environment polluted by imazethapyr.

Co-culture of Acinetobacter sp. and Scedosporium sp. immobilized beads for optimized biosurfactant production and degradation of crude oil

The widespread exploration and exploitation of crude oil has increased the prevalence of petroleum hydrocarbon pollution in the marine and coastal environment. Bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons using cell immobilization techniques is gaining increasing attention. In this study, the crude oil degradation performance of bacterial and fungal co-culture was optimized by entrapping both cells in sodium-alginate and polyvinyl alcohol composite beads. Results indicate that fungal cells remained active after entrapment and throughout the experiment, while bacterial cells were non-viable at the end of the experimental period in treatments with the bacterial-fungal ratio of 1:2. A remarkable decrease in surface tension from 72 mN/m to 36.51 mN/m was achieved in treatments with the bacterial-fungal ratio of 3:1. This resulted in a significant (P < 0.05) total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) removal rate of 89.4%, and the highest degradation of n-alkanes fractions (from 2129.01 mg/L to 118.53 mg/L), compared to the other treatments. Whereas PAHs removal was highest in treatments with the most fungal abundance (from 980.96 μg/L to 177.3 μg/L). Furthermore, enzymes analysis test revealed that catalase had the most effect on microbial degradation of the target substrate, while protease had no significant impact on the degradation process. High expression of almA and PAH-RHDa genes was achieved in the co-culture treatments, which correlated significantly (P < 0.05) with n-alkanes and PAHs removal, respectively. These results indicate that the application of immobilized bacterial and fungal cells in defined co-culture systems is an effective strategy for enhanced biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons in aqueous systems.

Investigation of the Persistence, Toxicological Effects, and Ecological Issues of S-Triazine Herbicides and Their Biodegradation Using Emerging Technologies: A Review

S-triazines are a group of herbicides that are extensively applied to control broadleaf weeds and grasses in agricultural production. They are mainly taken up through plant roots and are transformed by xylem tissues throughout the plant system. They are highly persistent and have a long half-life in the environment. Due to imprudent use, their toxic residues have enormously increased in the last few years and are frequently detected in food commodities, which causes chronic diseases in humans and mammals. However, for the safety of the environment and the diversity of living organisms, the removal of s-triazine herbicides has received widespread attention. In this review, the degradation of s-triazine herbicides and their intermediates by indigenous microbial species, genes, enzymes, plants, and nanoparticles are systematically investigated. The hydrolytic degradation of substituents on the s-triazine ring is catalyzed by enzymes from the amidohydrolase superfamily and yields cyanuric acid as an intermediate. Cyanuric acid is further metabolized into ammonia and carbon dioxide. Microbial-free cells efficiently degrade s-triazine herbicides in laboratory as well as field trials. Additionally, the combinatorial approach of nanomaterials with indigenous microbes has vast potential and considered sustainable for removing toxic residues in the agroecosystem. Due to their smaller size and unique properties, they are equally distributed in sediments, soil, water bodies, and even small crevices. Finally, this paper highlights the implementation of bioinformatics and molecular tools, which provide a myriad of new methods to monitor the biodegradation of s-triazine herbicides and help to identify the diverse number of microbial communities that actively participate in the biodegradation process.

Immobilization of Bacillus Thuringiensis and applicability in removal of sulfamethazine from soil

Microbial degradation is considered an essential and promising treatment for sulfadimidine contamination of soil. To address the low colonization rates and inefficiencies of typical antibiotic-degrading bacteria, sulfamethazine (SM2)-degrading strain H38 is converted into immobilized bacteria in this study. Results show that the removal rate of SM2 by immobilized strain H38 reaches 98% at 36 h, whereas the removal rate of SM2 by free bacteria reaches 75.2% at 60 h. In addition, the immobilized bacteria H38 exhibits tolerance to a wide range of pH (5-9) and temperature (20 °C-40 °C). As the amount of inoculation increases and the initial concentration of SM2 decreases, the removal rate of SM2 by the immobilized strain H38 increases gradually. Laboratory soil remediation tests show that the immobilized strain H38 can remove 90.0% of SM2 from the soil on the 12th day, which exceeds the removal by free bacteria by 23.9% in the same period. Additionally, the results show that the immobilized strain H38 enhances the overall activity of microorganisms in SM2-contaminated soil. Compared with the SM2 only (control group containing no bacteria) and free bacterial treatment groups, the gene expression levels of ammonia-oxidizing archaea, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, cbbLG, and cbbM increased significantly in the treatment group with immobilized strain H38. This study shows that immobilized strain H38 can reduce the effect of SM2 on soil ecology to a greater extent than free bacteria, while providing safe and effective remediation.

Effect of sodium alginate-gelatin-polyvinyl pyrrolidone microspheres on cucumber plants, soil, and microbial communities under lead stress

Lead is highly persistent and toxic in soil, hindering plant growth. Microspheres are a novel, functional, and slow-release preparation commonly used for controlled release of agricultural chemicals. However, their application in the remediation of Pb-contaminated soil has not been studied; furthermore, the remediation mechanism involved has not been systematically assessed. Herein, we evaluated the Pb stress mitigation ability of sodium alginate-gelatin-polyvinyl pyrrolidone composite microspheres. Microspheres effectively attenuated the Pb toxic effect on cucumber seedlings. Furthermore, they boosted cucumber growth, increased peroxidase activity, and chlorophyll content, while reducing malondialdehyde content in leaves. Microspheres promoted Pb enrichment in cucumber, especially in roots (about 4.5 times). They also improved soil physicochemical properties, promoted enzyme activity, and increased soil available Pb concentration in the short term. In addition, microspheres selectively enriched functional (heavy metal-tolerating and plant growth promoting) bacteria to adapt to and resist Pb stress by improving soil properties and nutrients. These results indicated that even a small amount (0.025-0.3 %) of microspheres can significantly reduce the adverse effects of Pb on plants, soil, and bacterial communities. Composite microspheres have shown great value in Pb remediation, and their application potential in phytoremediation is also worth evaluating to expand the application.

Biodegradation characteristics and mechanism of terbuthylazine by the newly isolated Agrobacterium rhizogenes strain AT13

Terbuthylazine (TBA) is an emerging environmental contaminant that poses moderate to high risk to non-target organisms. In this study, a newly TBA-degrading strain, Agrobacterium rhizogenes AT13, was isolated. This bacterium degraded 98.7% of TBA (100 mg/L) within 39 h. Based on the six detected metabolites, three novel pathways of strain AT13, including dealkylation, deamination-hydroxylation, and ring-opening reactions, were proposed. The risk assessment demonstrated that most degradation products might be substantially less harmful than TBA. Whole-genome sequencing and RT-qPCR analysis revealed that ttzA, which encodes S-adenosylhomocysteine deaminase (TtzA), is closely related to TBA degradation in AT13. Recombinant TtzA showed 75.3% degradation of 50 mg/L of TBA within 13 h and presented a K_m value of 0.299 mmol/L and a V_max value of 0.041 mmol/L/min. The molecular docking results indicated that the binding energy of TtzA to TBA was -32.9 kcal/mol and TtzA residue ASP161 formed two hydrogen bonds with TBA at distances of 2.23 and 1.80 Å. Moreover, AT13 efficiently degraded TBA in water and soil. Overall, this study provides a foundation for the characterization and mechanism of TBA biodegradation and may enhance our understanding of the TBA biodegradation by microbes.

Responses of straw foam-based aerobic granular sludge to atrazine: Insights from metagenomics and microbial community variations

Atrazine (ATZ) has caused serious environmental pollution, but the biodegradation of ATZ is relatively slow and inefficient. Herein, a straw foam-based aerobic granular sludge (SF-AGS) was developed, the spatially ordered architectures of which could greatly improve the drug tolerance and biodegradation efficiency of ATZ. The results showed that, in the presence of ATZ, chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N), total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN) were effectively removed within 6 h, and the removal efficiencies were as high as 93.37%, 85.33%, 84.7%, and 70%, respectively. Furthermore, ATZ stimulated microbial consortia to secrete three times more extracellular polymers compared to without ATZ. Illumina MiSeq sequencing results showed that bacterial diversity and richness decreased, leading to significant changes in microbial population structure and composition. ATZ-resistant bacteria including Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Burkholderia laid the biological basis for the stability of aerobic particles, efficient removal of pollutants, and degradation of ATZ. The study demonstrated that SF-AGS is feasible for ATZ-laden low-strength wastewater treatment.

New perspectives into Gluconobacter-catalysed biotransformations

Different from other aerobic microorganisms that oxidise carbon sources to water and carbon dioxide, Gluconobacter catalyses the incomplete oxidation of various substrates with regio- and stereoselectivity. This ability, as well as its capacity to release the resulting products into the reaction media, place Gluconobacter as a privileged member of a non-model microorganism class that may boost industrial biotechnology. Knowledge of new technologies applied to Gluconobacter has been piling up in recent years. Advancements in its genetic modification, application of immobilisation tools and careful designs of the transformations, have improved productivities and stabilities of Gluconobacter strains or enabled new bioconversions for the production of valuable marketable chemicals. In this work, the latest advancements applied to Gluconobacter-catalysed biotransformations are summarised with a special focus on recent available tools to improve them. From genetic and metabolic engineering to bioreactor design, the most recent works on the topic are analysed in depth to provide a comprehensive resource not only for scientists and technologists working on/with Gluconobacter, but for the general biotechnologist.

Enhanced biodegradation of thiamethoxam with a novel polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/sodium alginate (SA)/biochar immobilized Chryseobacterium sp H5

Long-term and extensive usage of thiamethoxam, the second-generation neonicotinoid insecticide, has caused a serious threat to non-target organisms and ecological security. Efficient immobilized microorganism techniques are a sustainable solution for bioremediation of thiamethoxam contamination. A Gram-negative aerobic bacterium Chryseobacterium sp H5 with high thiamethoxam-degrading efficiencies was isolated from activated sludge. Then we developed a novel polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/sodium alginate (SA)/biochar bead with this functional microbe immobilization to enhance the biodegradation and removal of thiamethoxam. Results indicated that the total removal and biodegradation rate of thiamethoxam with PVA/SA/biochar (0.7 %) beads with Chryseobacterium sp H5 immobilization at 30 °C and pH of 7.0 within 7 d reached about 90.47 % and 68.03 %, respectively, much higher than that using PVA/SA immobilized microbes (75.06 %, 56.05 %) and free microbes (61.72 %). Moreover, the PVA/SA/biochar (0.7 %) immobilized microbes showed increased tolerance to extreme conditions. Biodegradation metabolites of thiamethoxam were identified and two intermediates were first reported. Based on the identified biodegradation intermediates, cleavage of C-N between the 2-chlorothiazole ring and oxadiazine, dichlorination, nitrate reduction and condensation reaction would be the major biodegradation routes of thiamethoxam. Results of this work suggested the novel PVA/SA/biochar beads with Chryseobacterium sp H5 immobilization would be helpful for the effective bioremediation of thiamethoxam contamination.

Immobilization of bacterial mixture of Klebsiella variicola FH-1 and Arthrobacter sp. NJ-1 enhances the bioremediation of atrazine-polluted soil environments

In this study, the effects of the immobilized bacterial mixture (IM-FN) of Arthrobacter sp. NJ-1 and Klebsiella variicola strain FH-1 using sodium alginate-CaCl₂ on the degradation of atrazine were investigated. The results showed that the optimal ratio of three types of carrier materials (i.e., rice straw powder, rice husk, and wheat bran) was 1:1:1 with the highest adsorption capacity for atrazine (i.e., 3774.47 mg/kg) obtained at 30°C. On day 9, the degradation efficiency of atrazine (50 mg/L) reached 98.23% with cell concentration of 1.6 × 10⁸  cfu/ml at pH 9 and 30°C. The Box-Behnken method was used to further optimize the culture conditions for the degradation of atrazine by the immobilized bacterial mixture. The IM-FN could be reused for 2-3 times with the degradation efficiency of atrazine maintained at 73.0% after being stored for 80 days at 25°C. The population dynamics of IM-FN was explored with the total soil DNA samples specifically analyzed by real-time PCR. In 7 days, the copy numbers of both PydC and estD genes in the IM-FN were significantly higher than those of bacterial suspensions in the soil. Compared with bacterial suspensions, the IM-FN significantly accelerated the degradation of atrazine (20 mg/kg) in soil with the half-life shortened from 19.80 to 7.96 days. The plant heights of two atrazine-sensitive crops (wheat and soybean) were increased by 14.99 and 64.74%, respectively, in the soil restored by immobilized bacterial mixture, indicating that the IM-FN significantly reduced the phytotoxicity of atrazine on the plants. Our study evidently demonstrated that the IM-FN could significantly increase the degradation of atrazine, providing a potentially effective bioremediation technique for the treatment of atrazine-polluted soil environment and providing experimental support for the wide application of immobilized microorganism technology in agriculture.

Facile synthesis of dual-hydrolase encapsulated magnetic ZIF-8 composite for efficient removal of multi-pesticides induced pollution in water

Multi-pesticides pollution induced by organophosphorus insecticides (OPs) and aryloxyphenoxypropionate herbicides (AOPPs) has become a significant challenge in bioremediation of water pollution due to their prolonged and over application. Though a number of physical, chemical, and biological approaches have been developed for different pesticides, the explorations usually focus on eliminating single pesticide pollution. Herein, a heterostructure nanocomposite OPH/QpeH@mZIF-8, encapsulating OPs hydrolase OPH and AOPPs hydrolase QpeH in the magnetic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 (mZIF-8), was synthesized through a facile one-pot method in aqueous solution. The immobilized OPH and QpeH in mZIF-8 showed high activities towards the two most common OPs and AOPPs, i.e., chlorpyrifos and quizalofop-P-ethyl, which were hydrolyzed to 3,5,6-Trichloro-2-pyridino (TCP) and quizalofop acid, respectively. Moreover, the magnetic nanocatalyst possessed great tolerance towards broad pH range, high temperatures, and different chemical solvents and excellent recyclability. More importantly, compared to free OPH and QpeH, OPH/QpeH@mZIF-8, with significantly enhanced degradation capability, exhibited enormous potential for simultaneous removal of chlorpyrifos and quizalofop-p-ethyl from the surface and industrial wastewater. Overall, the study demonstrates the applicability of this strategy for utilizing magnetic nanocatalysts encapsulating multiple enzymes due to its simplicity, high efficiency, and economic benefits to removing pesticide compound pollution from various water resources.

Development of multifarious carrier materials and impact conditions of immobilised microbial technology for environmental remediation: A review

Microbial technology is the most sustainable and eco-friendly method of environmental remediation. Immobilised microorganisms were introduced to further advance microbial technology. In immobilisation technology, carrier materials distribute a large number of microorganisms evenly on their surface or inside and protect them from external interference to better treat the targets, thus effectively improving their bioavailability. Although many carrier materials have been developed, there have been relatively few comprehensive reviews. Therefore, this paper summarises the types of carrier materials explored in the last ten years from the perspective of structure, microbial activity, and cost. Among these, carbon materials and biofilms, as environmentally friendly functional materials, have been widely applied for immobilisation because of their abundant sources and favorable growth conditions for microorganisms. The novel covalent organic framework (COF) could also be a new immobilisation material, due to its easy preparation and high performance. Different immobilisation methods were used to determine the relationship between carriers and microorganisms. Co-immobilisation is particularly important because it can compensate for the deficiencies of a single immobilisation method. This paper emphasises that impact conditions also affect the immobilisation effect and function. In addition to temperature and pH, the media conditions during the preparation and reaction of materials also play a role. Additionally, this study mainly reviews the applications and mechanisms of immobilised microorganisms in environmental remediation. Future development of immobilisation technology should focus on the discovery of novel and environmentally friendly carrier materials, as well as the establishment of optimal immobilisation conditions for microorganisms. This review intends to provide references for the development of immobilisation technology in environmental applications and to further the improve understanding of immobilisation technology.

Development of solid agents of the diphenyl ether herbicide degrading bacterium Bacillus sp. Za based on a mixed organic fertilizer carrier

The long-term and widespread use of diphenyl ether herbicides has caused serious soil residue problems and threatens the agricultural ecological environment. The development of biodegrading agents using high-efficiency degrading strains as pesticide residue remediation materials has been widely recognized. In this study, the strain Bacillus sp. Za was used to prepare solid agents for the remediation of diphenyl ether herbicides-contaminated soil. The ratio of organic fertilizer was 1:3 (pig manure: cow dung), the inoculum amount of Za was 10%, the application amount of solid agents was 7%, and the application mode was mixed application, all of which were the most suitable conditions for solid agents. After the solid agents were stored for 120 days, the amount of Za remained above 10⁸ CFU/g. The degradation rates of the solid agents for lactofen, bifenox, fluoroglycofen, and fomesafen in soil reached 87.40, 82.40, 78.20, and 65.20%, respectively, on the 7th day. The application of solid agents alleviated the toxic effect of lactofen residues on maize seedlings. A confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) was used to observe the colonization of Za-gfp on the surface of maize roots treated in the solid agents, and Za-gfp mainly colonized the elongation zone and the mature area of maize root tips, and the colonization time exceeded 21 days. High-throughput sequencing analysis of soil community structural changes in CK, J (solid agents), Y (lactofen), and JY (solid agents + lactofen) groups showed that the addition of solid agents could restore the bacterial community structure in the rhizosphere soil of maize seedlings. The development of solid agents can facilitate the remediation of soil contaminated with diphenyl ether herbicide residues and improve the technical level of the microbial degradation of pesticide residues.

Toxicological effects, environmental behaviors and remediation technologies of herbicide atrazine in soil and sediment: A comprehensive review

Atrazine has become one of the most popular applied triazine herbicides in the world due to its high herbicidal efficiency and low price. With its large-dosage and long-term use on a global scale, atrazine can cause widespread and persistent contamination of soil and sediment. This review systematically evaluates the toxicological effects, environmental risks, environmental behaviors (adsorption, transport and transformation, and bioaccumulation) of atrazine, and the remediation technologies of atrazine-contaminated soil and sediment. For the adsorption behavior of atrazine on soil and sediment, the organic matter content plays an extremely important role in the adsorption process. Various models and equations such as the multi-media fugacity model and solute transport model are used to analyze the migration and transformation process of atrazine in soil and sediment. It is worth noting that certain transformation products of atrazine in the environment even have stronger toxicity and mobility than its parent. Among various remediation technologies, the combination of microbial remediation and phytoremediation for atrazine-contaminated soil and sediment has wide application prospects. Although other remediation technologies such as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can also efficiently remove atrazine from soil, some potential problems still need to be further clarified. Finally, some related challenges and prospects are proposed.

Modeling-Guided Amendments Lead to Enhanced Biodegradation in Soil

Extensive use of agrochemicals is emerging as a serious environmental issue coming at the cost of the pollution of soil and water resources. Bioremediation techniques such as biostimulation are promising strategies used to remove pollutants from agricultural soils by supporting the indigenous microbial degraders. Though considered cost-effective and eco-friendly, the success rate of these strategies typically varies, and consequently, they are rarely integrated into commercial agricultural practices. In the current study, we applied metabolic-based community-modeling approaches for promoting realistic in terra solutions by simulation-based prioritization of alternative supplements as potential biostimulants, considering a collection of indigenous bacteria. Efficacy of biostimulants as enhancers of the indigenous degrader Paenarthrobacter was ranked through simulation and validated in pot experiments. A two-dimensional simulation matrix predicting the effect of different biostimulants on additional potential indigenous degraders (Pseudomonas, Clostridium, and Geobacter) was crossed with experimental observations. The overall ability of the models to predict the compounds that act as taxa-selective stimulants indicates that computational algorithms can guide the manipulation of the soil microbiome in situ and provides an additional step toward the educated design of biostimulation strategies. IMPORTANCE Providing the food requirements of a growing population comes at the cost of intensive use of agrochemicals, including pesticides. Native microbial soil communities are considered key players in the degradation of such exogenous substances. Manipulating microbial activity toward an optimized outcome in efficient biodegradation processes conveys a promise of maintaining intensive yet sustainable agriculture. Efficient strategies for harnessing the native microbiome require the development of approaches for processing big genomic data. Here, we pursued metabolic modeling for promoting realistic in terra solutions by simulation-based prioritization of alternative supplements as potential biostimulants, considering a collection of indigenous bacteria. Our genomic-based predictions point at strategies for optimizing biodegradation by the native community. Developing a systematic, data-guided understanding of metabolite-driven targeted enhancement of selected microorganisms lays the foundation for the design of ecologically sound methods for optimizing microbiome functioning.

Microbial adaptation and impact into the pesticide's degradation

The imprudent use of agrochemicals to control agriculture and household pests is unsafe for the environment. Hence, to protect the environment and diversity of living organisms, the degradation of pesticides has received widespread attention. There are different physical, chemical, and biological methods used to remediate pesticides in contaminated sites. Compared to other methods, biological approaches and their associated techniques are more effective, less expensive and eco-friendly. Microbes secrete several enzymes that can attach pesticides, break down organic compounds, and then convert toxic substances into carbon and water. Thus, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the functional genes and genomic potential of microbial species for the removal of emerging pollutants. Here we address the knowledge gaps by highlighting systematic biology and their role in adaptation of microbial species from agricultural soils with a history of pesticide usage and profiling shifts in functional genes and microbial taxa abundance. Moreover, by co-metabolism, the microbial species fulfill their nutritional requirements and perform more efficiently than single microbial-free cells. But in an open environment, free cells of microbes are not much prominent in the degradation process due to environmental conditions, incompatibilities with mechanical equipment and difficulties associated with evenly distributing inoculum through the agroecosystem. This review highlights emerging techniques involving the removal of pesticides in a field-scale environment like immobilization, biobed, biocomposites, biochar, biofilms, and bioreactors. In these techniques, different microbial cells, enzymes, natural fibers, and strains are used for the effective biodegradation of xenobiotic pesticides.

Recent Progress and Prospects in Catalytic Water Treatment

Presently, conventional technologies in water treatment are not efficient enough to completely mineralize refractory water contaminants. In this context, the implementation of catalytic processes could be an alternative. Despite the advantages provided in terms of kinetics of transformation, selectivity, and energy saving, numerous attempts have not yet led to implementation at an industrial scale. This review examines investigations at different scales for which controversies and limitations must be solved to bridge the gap between fundamentals and practical developments. Particular attention has been paid to the development of solar-driven catalytic technologies and some other emerging processes, such as microwave assisted catalysis, plasma-catalytic processes, or biocatalytic remediation, taking into account their specific advantages and the drawbacks. Challenges for which a better understanding related to the complexity of the systems and the coexistence of various solid-liquid-gas interfaces have been identified.

Omics technologies used in pesticide residue detection and mitigation in crop

In agriculture, the convenience and efficacy of chemical pesticides have become inevitable to manage cultivated crop production. Here, we review the worldwide use of pesticides based on their categories, mode of actions and toxicity. Excessive use of pesticides may lead to hazardous pesticide residues in crops, causing adverse effects on human health and the environment. A wide range of high-tech-analytical methods are available to analyse pesticide residues. However, they are mostly time-consuming and inconvenient for on-site detection, calling for the development of biosensors that detect cellular changes in crops. Such new detection methods that combine biological and physicochemical knowledge may overcome the shortage in current farming to develop sustainable systems that support environmental and human health. This review also comprehensively compiles domestic pesticide residues removal tips from vegetables and fruits. Synthetic pesticide alternatives such as biopesticide and nanopesticide are greener to the environment. However, its safety assessment for large-scale application needs careful evaluation. Lastly, we strongly call for reversions of pesticide application trends based on the changing climate, which is lacking in the current scenario.

Enhanced bioremediation of 2,3',4,4',5-pentachlorodiphenyl by consortium GYB1 immobilized on sodium alginate-biochar

2,3',4,4',5-pentachlorodiphenyl (PCB 118), a dioxin-like PCB, is often detected in the environment and is difficult to be aerobically biodegraded. In this study, a novel polychlorinated biphenyl degrading consortium GYB1 that can metabolize PCB 118 was successfully obtained by acclimatization process. To enhance the application performance of free bacterial cells, consortium GYB1 was immobilized with sodium alginate and biochar to prepare SC-GYB1 beads. Orthogonal experiments indicated that the optimal composition of the beads (0.2 g) was 2.0% sodium alginate (SA) content, 2.0% wet weight of cells and 1.5% biochar content, which can degrade 50.50% PCB 118 in 5 d. Immobilization shortened the degradation half-life of 1 mg/L PCB 118 by consortium GYB1 from 8.14 d to 3.79 d and made the beads more robust to respond to environmental stress. The SC-GYB1 beads could even keep considerable PCB degradation ability under 200 mg/L Cd²⁺ stress. According to 16S rRNA gene analysis, Pseudomonas and Stenotrophomonas played the dominant role in consortium GYB1. And embedding obviously altered the community structure and the key bacterial genera during the PCB removal process. Therefore, the immobilization of bacteria consortium by sodium alginate-biochar enhanced the biodegradation of PCB 118, which will provide new insights into functional microorganisms' actual application for PCB restoration.

Complete Genome Sequence and Function Gene Identify of Prometryne-Degrading Strain Pseudomonas sp. DY-1

The genus Pseudomonas is widely recognized for its potential for environmental remediation and plant growth promotion. Pseudomonas sp. DY-1 was isolated from the agricultural soil contaminated five years by prometryne, it manifested an outstanding prometryne degradation efficiency and an untapped potential for plant resistance improvement. Thus, it is meaningful to comprehend the genetic background for strain DY-1. The whole genome sequence of this strain revealed a series of environment adaptive and plant beneficial genes which involved in environmental stress response, heavy metal or metalloid resistance, nitrate dissimilatory reduction, riboflavin synthesis, and iron acquisition. Detailed analyses presented the potential of strain DY-1 for degrading various organic compounds via a homogenized pathway or the protocatechuate and catechol branches of the β-ketoadipate pathway. In addition, heterologous expression, and high efficiency liquid chromatography (HPLC) confirmed that prometryne could be oxidized by a Baeyer-Villiger monooxygenase (BVMO) encoded by a gene in the chromosome of strain DY-1. The result of gene knock-out suggested that the sulfate starvation-induced (SSI) genes in this strain might also involve in the process of prometryne degradation. These results would provide the molecular basis for the application of strain DY-1 in various fields and would contribute to the study of prometryne biodegradation mechanism as well.

Enhanced biodegradation of organophosphorus insecticides in industrial wastewater via immobilized Cupriavidus nantongensis X1T

Chlorpyrifos is an important organophosphorus insecticide. It is highly toxic to mammals and can pollute the environment. Cupriavidus nantongensis X1^T can efficiently degrade chlorpyrifos. Immobilization technology can also improve the viability, stability and catalytic ability of bacteria. In this study, strain X1^T was, therefore, captured on various composite immobilized carriers, sodium alginate (SA), diatomite (KLG), chitosan (CTS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The four types of immobilized beads (SA, SA + KLG, SA + CTS and SA + PVA) could form a slice and honeycomb structure to capture strain X1^T. The results showed that SA + CTS (SC) was an optimal material combination for the immobilization of strain X1^T to degrade chlorpyrifos. Compared with SA-X1^T, after adding CTS, the specific surface area and adsorption capacity for chlorpyrifos were increased 3.4 and 1.7 fold, respectively. SC-X1^T could degrade 96.6% of chlorpyrifos at 20 mg/L within 24 h and the degradation rate constant was 4.8 fold greater than immobilized strain LLBD2, a well-studied chlorpyrifos-degrading strain. The immobilized beads SC-X1^T also showed a more stable and greater degradation ability than X1^T free cells for chlorpyrifos in industrial wastewater. The synergy of adsorption and degradation of immobilized strain X1^T is suitable for in-situ remediation of chlorpyrifos contaminated environment.
