Water masses seasonality and meteorological patterns drive the biogeochemical processes of a subtropical and urbanized watershed-bay-shelf continuum

Biochemical responses in Pacific oysters Magallana gigas (Thunberg, 1793): Tools to evaluate the environmental quality of aquaculture areas

The discharge of sanitary sewage into the bays of the Florianópolis Metropolitan Area (Southern Brazil), has led to the contamination of oyster farms. Consequently, linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) were quantified in the sediment, and the biochemical responses in gills and digestive gland of oysters from six farms were assessed. Our findings revealed elevated levels of LABs in the sediment of the Imaruim and Serraria farms. Additionally, alterations were observed in the antioxidant enzymes: catalase, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase in both oyster tissue from the Serraria, Santo Antonio de Lisboa and Sambaqui farms. Furthermore, correlation analyses indicated strong and moderate associations between biochemical responses, organic contaminants, and certain physicochemical parameters. Consequently, our results demonstrated the activation of the antioxidant system in oysters, representing a protective response to the presence of sanitary sewage and other contaminants. Therefore, we propose the utilization of biochemical biomarkers for monitoring the environmental quality of farms.

Hysteresis analysis reveals how phytoplankton assemblage shifts with the nutrient dynamics during and between precipitation patterns

The escalation of global eutrophication has significantly increased due to the impact of climate change, particularly the increased frequency of extreme rainfall events. Predicting and managing eutrophication requires understanding the consequences of precipitation events on algal dynamics. Here, we assessed the influence of precipitation events throughout the year on nutrient and phytoplankton dynamics in a drinking water reservoir from January 2020 to January 2022. Four distinct precipitation patterns, namely early spring flood rain (THX), Plum rain (MY), Typhoon rain (TF), and Dry season (DS), were identified based on rainfall intensity, duration time, and cumulative rainfall. The study findings indicate that rainfall is the primary driver of algal dynamics by altering nutrient levels and TN:TP ratios during wet seasons, while water temperature becomes more critical during the Dry season. Combining precipitation characteristics with the lag periods between algal proliferation and rainfall occurrence is essential for accurately assessing the impact of rainfall on algal blooms. The highest algae proliferation occurred approximately 20 and 30 days after the peak rainfall during the MY and DS periods, respectively. This was influenced by the intensity and cumulative precipitation. The reservoir exhibited two distinct TN/TP ratio stages, with average values of 52 and 19, respectively. These stages were determined by various forms of nitrogen and phosphorus in rainfall-driven inflows and were associated with shifts from Bacillariophyta-dominated to Cyanophyta-dominated blooms during the MY and DS seasons. Our findings underscore the interconnected effects of nutrients, temperature, and hydrological conditions driven by diverse rainfall patterns in shaping algal dynamics. This study provides valuable insights into forecasting algal bloom risks in the context of climate change and developing sustainable strategies for lake or reservoir restoration.

Molecular changes in oysters Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg, 1793) from aquaculture areas of Santa Catarina Island bays (Florianópolis, Brazil) reveal anthropogenic effects

Anthropogenic activities in coastal regions cause risks to the environmental and human health. Due to the carcinogenic and mutagenic potential, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are considered priority for monitoring. Most of the Brazilian production of Crassostrea gigas oysters are placed in the Bays of Santa Catarina Island. The aim of this study was to evaluate molecular responses (phase I and II of biotransformation and antioxidant defense) of C. gigas from six oyster farming areas potentially contaminated by sanitary sewage in Florianópolis Metropolitan (SC, Brazil): Santo Antônio de Lisboa, Sambaqui, Serraria, Caieira, Tapera, Imaruim. We evaluated the transcript levels of CYP1A1-like, CYP2-like, CYP2AU2-like, CYP356A1, GSTA1A-like, GSTO.4A-like, SULT-like, SOD-like and CAT-like by qRT-PCR. Only oysters from Caieira showed levels of thermotolerant coliforms allowed by the law. Chemicals analyses in soft tissues of oysters showed low to average levels of PAH in all monitored areas. Enhanced transcript levels of phase I (CYP1A1-like, CYP3564A1-like, CYP2-like and CYP2AU2-like) were observed in oysters from Serraria and Imaruí, suggesting higher biotransformation activity in these farming areas. Regarding phase II of biotransformation, GSTO.4A-like was up-regulated in oysters from Imaruí compared to Caieira and Santo Antônio de Lisboa. An upregulation of SOD-like and CAT-like were observed in oysters from Imaruí and Serraria, suggesting that oysters from these sites are facing higher prooxidant conditions compared to other areas. By integrating the biological and chemical data it is suggested that human-derived contaminants are affecting the oyster metabolism in some farming areas.

Does eutrophication enhance greenhouse gas emissions in urbanized tropical estuaries?

Estuaries are considered as important sources of the global emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Urbanized estuaries often experience eutrophication under strong anthropogenic activities. Eutrophication can enhance phytoplankton abundance, leading to carbon dioxide (CO₂) consumption in the water column. Only a few studies have evaluated the relationship between GHGs and eutrophication in estuaries. In this study, we assessed the concentrations and fluxes of CO₂, methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) in combination with a suite of biogeochemical variables in four sampling campaigns over two years in a highly urbanized tropical estuary in Southeast Asia (the Saigon River Estuary, Vietnam). The impact of eutrophication on GHGs was evaluated through several statistical methods and interpreted by biological processes. The average concentrations of CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O at the Saigon River in 2019-2020 were 3174 ± 1725 μgC-CO₂ L^-1, 5.9 ± 16.8 μgC-CH₄ L^-1 and 3.0 ± 4.8 μgN-N₂O L^-1, respectively. Their concentrations were 13-18 times, 52-332 times, and 9-37 times higher than the global mean concentrations of GHGs, respectively. While CO₂ concentration had no clear seasonal pattern, N₂O and CH₄ concentrations significantly differed between the dry and the rainy seasons. The increase in eutrophication status along the dense urban area was linearly correlated with the increase in GHGs concentrations. The presence of both nitrification and denitrification resulted in elevated N₂O concentrations in this urban area of the estuary. The high concentration of CO₂ was contributed by the high concentration of organic carbon and mineralization process. GHGs fluxes at the Saigon River Estuary were comparable to other urbanized estuaries regardless of climatic condition. Control of eutrophication in urbanized estuaries through the implantation of efficient wastewater treatment facilities will be an effective solution in mitigating the global warming potential caused by estuarine emissions.
