Co-transport of uranyl carbonate and silica colloids in saturated quartz sand under different hydrochemical conditions

Soil colloids can significantly enhance spreading of polybromodiphenyl ethers in groundwater by serving as an effective carrier

Polybromodiphenyl ethers (PBDEs), the widely used flame retardants, are common contaminants in surface soils at e-waste recycling sites. The association of PBDEs with soil colloids has been observed, indicating the potential risk to groundwater due to colloid-facilitated transport. However, the extent to which soil colloids may enhance the spreading of PBDEs in groundwater is largely unknown. Herein, we report the co-transport of decabromodiphenyl ester (BDE-209) and soil colloids in saturated porous media. The colloids released from a soil sample collected at an e-waste recycling site in Tianjin, China, contain high concentration of PBDEs, with BDE-209 being the most abundant conger (320 ± 30 mg/kg). The colloids exhibit relatively high mobility in saturated sand columns, under conditions commonly observed in groundwater environments. Notably, under all the tested conditions (i.e., varying flow velocity, pH, ionic species and ionic strength), the mass of eluted BDE-209 correlates linearly with that of eluted soil colloids, even though the mobility of the colloids varies markedly depending on the specific hydrodynamic and solution chemistry conditions involved. Additionally, the mass of BDE-209 retained in the columns also correlates strongly with the mass of retained colloids. Apparently, the PBDEs remain bound to soil colloids during transport in porous media. Findings in this study indicate that soil colloids may significantly promote the transport of PBDEs in groundwater by serving as an effective carrier. This might be the reason why the highly insoluble and adsorptive PBDEs are found in groundwater at some PBDE-contaminated sites.

Natural mineral colloids facilitated transport of EE2 in saturated porous media: Effects of humic acid and conjugate form

Steroid estrogens have posed significant ecological risks to aquatic organisms due to their potent endocrine-disrupting effects. The role of natural mineral colloids in facilitating the transport of hydrophobic organic pollutants in the environment has been confirmed, but the control mechanisms of colloids on 17α-Ethinylestradiol (EE2) migration in the subsurface environment are often still not well understood. This study combined the batch sorption equilibrium experiments and dynamic transport simulations to reveal the interface interactions and co-transport characteristics between illite colloids and EE2 at both macroscopic and microscopic levels. The existing form changes of EE2 and the influence of coexisting humic acid (HA) during transport in porous media were also specifically investigated. The batch experiments demonstrated that the primary mechanisms governing EE2 sorption onto illite colloids involved surface sorption and hydrogen bonding. The coexistence of HA could load onto the surface of illite colloids, thereby enhancing the colloidal sorption capacity for EE2. Transport experiments demonstrated that the migratory ability of EE2 in silty clay was limited, but illite colloids could significantly promote its penetration, with the peak penetration content (Ct/C0) increasing from 0.64 to 0.77. In the absence of HA, EE2 primarily transported in a dissolved form, accounting for 62.86% of the total concentrations. When HA concentrations were increased to 10 mg/L and 20 mg/L, the proportion of colloidal conjugate EE2 in the effluents reached 52.13% and 54.49%, respectively. The enhanced transport of EE2 by HA was primarily attributed to the improved migration ability of illite colloids and the increased proportion of illite-EE2 conjugate, resulting in a maximum Ct/C0 value of 0.94. The validity of these results was further confirmed by employing calculations based on the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek and Colloidal Filtration Theory. This study provides new insights of understanding the transport of EE2 in subsurface environment.

One particle three targets: Phosphate anion-modified magnetic mesoporous silica with enhanced fluorescence for sensitive detection, efficient adsorption, and repeated removal of uranium (VI) ions

An ideal adsorbent material that combines the multiple capabilities of sensitive detection, efficient adsorption, and repeatable removal of uranium (U) from the environment remains a serious challenge. Herin, a general method was developed for synthesizing a series of phosphate anions (such as: PO43-, P2O74-, P3O105- and P6O186-) modified magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Fe3O4 @mSiO2-Zn2+ NPs). The mesoporous surfaces and abundant phosphate groups provide potential, powerful uranium-binding sites for capturing U(VI) ions. Especially, the optimum adsorption capacity of Fe3O4 @mSiO2-Zn2+/P3O105- NPs was as high as 885.90 mg·g-1 (298 K), which was higher than that of unmodified or other phosphate anions-modified Fe3O4 @mSiO2-Zn2+ NPs. Meanwhile, P3O105--binding sites and mesoporous surfaces also strongly restrict U(VI) ions' fluorescence vibrational inactivation, the adsorption results in rapid green fluorescence enhancement (within 180 s), and an ultra-low detection limit (4.5 nmol·L-1), which is well below the standard in drinking water of the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, even after 5 cycles, the adsorbent still maintained their original adsorption capacity of 80.21% and displayed excellent selectivity for detecting and removing U(VI) from seawater. Based on these results, the Fe3O4 @mSiO2-Zn2+/P3O105- NPs seem to be a suitable multifunctional adsorbent for the detection, adsorption, and removal of U(VI) from environment.

Internal reuse of methanol-to-olefin wastewater based on micro-channel separation coupling hydrocyclone regeneration

Methanol-to-olefin (MTO) is a typical new coal chemical industry example. Due to the large volume of generated wastewater, complex composition including catalysts, aromatics and various oxygen-containing compounds, and serious environmental hazard, wastewater recycling is critical for sustainable industrial development and ecological protection. Herein, a swirl regenerating micro-channel separation (SRMS) technology was proposed to integrate deep filtration and hydrocyclone-enhanced regeneration. A small-scale experimental investigation was first conducted to verify the feasibility of the MTO wastewater treatment. A pilot SRMS device with a treatment capacity of 20 m3/h was constructed, and the device's continuous operation effect and stability were comprehensively evaluated. The separation performance of the SRMS device at different solution pH values and the impact of the hydrocyclone-enhanced regeneration of separation media were discussed in detail. At low solution pH values (<7), the SRMS device exhibits an average separation efficiency of 92.0% for fine particulate matter in wastewater, and the median particle size, d50, decreases from 1.55 to 0.6 μm. As the solution pH increases, the repulsive energy barrier for the medium-contaminant and contaminant-contaminant increases, inhibiting the deposition behavior of particulate pollutants. In addition, hydrocyclone desorbs contaminants deposited on the separation media and the average contaminant residual rate decreases from 3.3 to 0.2 wt%. We propose an industrial application for treating and reusing MTO wastewater (200 m3/h) using the SRMS technology based on the experimental results. The costs of the wastewater treatment process are as low as 0.25 CNY/m3, and the wastewater reuse rate is over 97% without chemical consumption. This work can provide an environmentally friendly and economically sustainable approach to the source management of MTO wastewater.

Co-transport and co-release of Eu(III) with bentonite colloids in saturated porous sand columns: Controlling factors and governing mechanisms

Accurate prediction of the colloid-driven transport of radionuclides in porous media is critical for the long-term safety assessment of radioactive waste disposal repository. However, the co-transport and corelease process of radionuclides with colloids have not been well documented, the intrinsic mechanisms for colloids-driven retention/transport of radionuclides are still pending for further discussion. Thus the controlling factors and governing mechanisms of co-transport and co-release behavior of Eu(III) with bentonite colloids (BC) were discussed and quantified by combining laboratory-scale column experiments, colloid filtration theory and advection dispersion equation model. The results showed that the role of colloids in facilitating or retarding the Eu(III) transport in porous media varied with cations concentration, pH, and humic acid (HA). The transport of Eu(III) was facilitated by the dispersed colloids under the low ionic strength and high pH conditions, while was impeded by the aggregated colloids cluster. The enhancement of Eu(III) transport was not monotonically risen with the increase of colloids concentration, the most optimized colloids concentration in facilitating Eu(III) transport was approximately 150 mg L^-1. HA showed significant promotion on both Eu(III) and colloid transport because of not only its strong Eu(III) complexion ability but also the increased dispersion of HA-coated colloid particles. The HA and BC displayed a synergistic effect on Eu(III) transport, the co-transport occurred by forming the ternary BC-HA-Eu(III) hybrid. The transport patterns could be simulated well with a two-site model that used the advection dispersion equation by reflecting the blocking effect. The retarded Eu(III) on the stationary phase was released and remobilized by the introduction of colloids, or by a transient reduction in cation concentration. The findings are essential for predicting the geological fate and the migration risk of radionuclides in the repository environment.

Transport and deposition behaviors of microplastics in porous media: Co-impacts of N fertilizers and humic acid

Due to the interaction of fertilizers with microplastics (MPs) and porous media, fertilization process would influence MPs transport and distributions in soil. The co-impacts of N fertilizers (both inorganic and organic N fertilizers) and humic substance on MPs transport/retention behaviors in porous media were examined in 10 mM KCl solutions at pH 6. NH₄Cl and CO(NH₂)₂ were employed as inorganic and organic N fertilizers, respectively, while humic acid (HA) was used as model humic substance. We found that for all three sized MPs (0.2, 1 and 2 µm) without HA, both types of N fertilizers decreased their transport/increased their retention in porous media (both quartz sand and soil). N fertilizers adsorbed onto surfaces of MPs and sand/soil, lowering the electrostatic repulsion between MPs and porous media, thus contributed to the enhanced MPs deposition. MPs with N fertilizers in solutions more tightly attached onto porous media and thus were more difficult to be re-mobilized by low ionic strength solution elution. Via steric repulsion and increasing electrostatic repulsion between MPs and porous media due to adsorption onto their surfaces, HA could increase MPs transport with N fertilizers in solutions.
