Occurrence and fate of linear alkylbenzenes and their potential as environmental molecular markers in highly urbanized river systems

Organic matter sources and distribution along land-use gradient in a Himalayan foothills River: Insights from molecular markers

The analysis of hydrocarbon biomarkers in surface sediments along the Markanda River in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas was conducted to gain insights into the distribution and composition of organic matter (OM) within the sediments. This investigation is essential for comprehending how anthropogenic changes are influencing the OM dynamics in river systems. The study involved identification and quantification of various compound groups such as n-alkanes, hopanes, steranes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), linear alkyl benzenes (LABs) and phthalate esters along with their respective parametric ratios. The variation in distribution of n-alkanes and associated indices (odd-even carbon number predominance (OEP), average chain length (ACL), terrigenous to aquatic ratio (TAR), carbon preference index (CPI), and natural n-alkanes ratio (NAR)) were used to distinguish the natural source of organic content from those influenced by anthropogenic contamination. The detection of petroleum contamination was indicated by the presence of prominent unresolved complex mixtures (UCM) as well as specific petroleum biomarkers such as hopanes, diasteranes, and steranes. The study revealed varying concentrations of the analyzed organic pollutants, with the average of PAHs at 24.6 ng/g dw, LABs at 18.1 ng/g dw, and phthalates at 8.3 μg/g dw. The variability in concentration of the investigated compound groups across different locations indicated spatial heterogeneity, and the land use patterns appears to modulate the sources of OM in surface sediments. The source contribution of PAHs and phthalates determined by positive matrix factorization (PMF) shows the predominant sources of the anthropogenic hydrocarbons were linked primarily to petroleum/petroleum-derived products emissions, industrial discharges, cultural practices and common household waste/sewage disposal. This analysis provides insights for developing mitigation strategies and informing relevant policy changes globally, thereby contributing to the broader understanding of anthropogenic impacts on water ecosystems.

An urban metabolism framework purpose to assess the dynamics of linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) discharge flows and driving forces at the city level in Guangdong province, China

Linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) are a class of molecular markers derived from anthropogenic activities. A comprehensive understanding of the mechanism that determines their entry into anthroposphere, in terms of magnitude and pathway, is the prerequisite to establish effective mitigation measures. This study develops a methodology framework to analyze the source-sink interactions and driving factors of the direct and indirect LAB discharges from production and living activities in Guangdong Province, China from 2004 to 2017. Results indicated that the total LAB discharges of Guangdong into the environment were averaged at 2.9 kt yr-1, of which 61.9% originated from the Pearl River Delta (PRD) urban agglomeration. An average proportion of 76.0% was discharged into water bodies with the remaining released into land bodied. From 2014 to 2017, the LAB discharges increased by seven times, resulting from the steady increase of urban residential sources, while contribution from industrial sources continuously declined during the studied period. Meanwhile, the discharging hotspots expanded from Guangzhou city to other super-cities around it, including Shenzhen and Dongguan. The other cities exhibited a decreasing trend in discharges as a function of distance from these hotspot cities. The multisectoral sources of LABs differed considerably among cities, and the source contribution of each city changed significantly with progressive urbanization. The factor decomposition analysis indicated that LAB discharges in PRD cities primarily contributed by the pollutant concentration and reflected the treatment structure, while peripheral cities of the PRD mainly contributed by the per capita consumption and pollutant discharge per unit of GDP. Overall, our results provide a scientific database and supports for the regional co-remediation of anthropogenic pollution.

Complete biodegradability assessment of polyoxyethylene glycerol ester non-ionic surfactant: Aerobic, anaerobic, combined biodegradation and inhibitory effects

Aerobic and anaerobic biodegradability have become one of the most relevant characteristics for all contaminants. This is especially important in case of surfactants, which are discharged in wastewater treatment plants or directly into the aquatic bodies. The aim of this study is the integral assessment of the biodegradability of the non-ionic surfactant polyoxyethylene glycerol ester PGE-OE17. The aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation of PGE-OE17 was evaluated at different initial surfactant concentrations, and the evolution of the toxicity of the surfactant and its by-products was followed during the aerobic and anaerobic processes using bacteria Vibrio fischeri. PGE-OE17 was not completely biodegradable neither aerobically nor anaerobically, and the increase in the initial surfactant concentration had a negative effect in the biodegradation. Toxicity of the surfactant solutions and degradation by-products had a first increase followed by a gradual decrease during both tests, revealing that toxic substances released can harm the microorganisms and therefore hinder the biodegradation. Additionally, combined aerobic-anaerobic biodegradation tests were performed, consisting in a first aerobic treatment of different duration and initial concentration, followed by a complete anaerobic treatment. Results showed that a balance between aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation duration can maximize the biodegradation rates in comparison with only aerobic or anaerobic tests.

Anthropogenic influences in a rapidly urbanizing area using linear alkylbenzenes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as tracers

Environmental molecular markers can be used to understand the sources, transport, and fate of pollutants. Furthermore, they can also be applied to assess the influences of anthropogenic activities and elucidate urbanization from different perspectives. In this study, the potential of linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as chemical indicators of urbanization was examined first. Overall, the concentrations of LABs and PAHs ranged from 5.49-148 ng/g (mean: 15.6, median: 9.33) and 3.61-4878 ng/g (mean: 181, median: 71.3), respectively. Owing to the different sources and input methods of these two substances in soil, the area-weighted median values for LABs were more suitable to assess the magnitude of contamination on the administrative scale. For PAHs, the average values were more practical. LAB (consumption-induced pollutants) and PAH (production-induced pollutants) concentrations exhibited good correlations with some indices for residential daily life and industrialization, which indicated that soil can be utilized to reveal multidimensional urbanization-environment relationships. Two different patterns, the inverted U-shaped pattern and the upward pattern, were employed to simulate the environment-urbanization relationships in Shenzhen, China, which indicated that raising the standard of living or industrialization had created different soil pollution. The environmental quality demand was more difficult to meet by changing the energy structure than by improving infrastructure.
