Enhanced removal of trivalent chromium from leather wastewater using engineered bacteria immobilized on magnetic pellets

Removal of trivalent chromium ions in model contaminated groundwater using hexagonal boron nitride as an adsorbent

The feasibility of using hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) to treat heavy metal Cr(III) from model contaminated groundwater was evaluated in this study by adsorption experiments and characterizations. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first attempt to conduct the adsorption of Cr(III) by h-BN under various experimental conditions such as exposure time, ratio of adsorbates and adsorbents, solution pH, background ions with different ionic strength, and the presence of humic acids (HA) in model contaminated groundwater. The optimized h-BN showed excellent maximum adsorption capacity (i.e., 177 mg ∙ g-1) when the concentrations of Cr(III) and h-BN were 10 and 10 mg ∙ L-1, respectively. Subsequently, we confirmed there was a negligible change in the adsorption performance of Cr(III) by h-BN in the presence of co-ions (i.e., K and Mg) in concentrations in a range from 50 to 1000 mg ∙ L-1. Furthermore, the adsorption performance of Cr(III) gradually improved with HA concentrations from 2.5 to 25 mg ∙ L-1. Interestingly, the maximum adsorption performance of Cr(III) by both HA and h-BN increased until 500 mg ∙ g-1 in the presence of 25 mg ∙ L-1 HA. The adsorption mechanism was clarified by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Additionally, we successfully confirmed that h-BN could be reused until five cycles. On the basis of the adsorption performance results and characterizations, h-BN can be utilized as an efficient and practical adsorbent to treat Cr(III) in groundwater treatment.

Numerical and experimental investigation of ultrasound effects on filtration process in wire-wrapped filter tube

Refinery filtration processes often face challenges related to rapidly increasing permeate pressure differentials and the consequent need for frequent back-flushing. This study investigates the impact of high-intensity immersed sonotrode ultrasound device on flow patterns to address these issues, both numerically and experimentally. Numerical simulations reveal that ultrasound promotes axial circular mixing of the bulk fluid, increasing average flow velocities around the filter tube from 5.11 × 10-5 m/s to 8.76 × 10-3-6.09 × 10-2 m/s, thereby facilitating cleansing of filter tube surfaces. Additionally, high-frequency pressure fluctuations contribute to enhancing the filtration process during positive pressure phases, while robust online back-flushing effects are generated during negative pressure phases. Although the wire-wrapped filter tube attenuates ultrasound energy as it penetrates the tube gaps, ultrasound still induces turbulent mixing inside and outside the filter tubes, aiding in the removal of impurities from the gaps. The utilization of ultrasound is demonstrated to not inflict harm on upstream and downstream facilities. Experimental results demonstrate that ultrasound-assisted filtration with 600 W and 1000 W power inputs reduces filtration pressure differences by 18 % and 73 %, respectively, affirming ultrasound's effectiveness in mitigating and preventing blockages, highlighting its significance for industrial applicability.

The potential of biochar as a microbial carrier for agricultural and environmental applications

Biochar can be an effective carrier for microbial inoculants because of its favourable properties promoting microbial life. In this review, we assess the effectiveness of biochar as a microbial carrier for agricultural and environmental applications. Biochar is enriched with organic carbon, contains nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium as nutrients, and has a high porosity and moisture-holding capacity. The large number of active hydroxyl, carboxyl, sulfonic acid group, amino, imino, and acylamino hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups are effective for microbial cell adhesion and proliferation. The use of biochar as a carrier of microbial inoculum has been shown to enhance the persistence, survival and colonization of inoculated microbes in soil and plant roots, which play a crucial role in soil biochemical processes, nutrient and carbon cycling, and soil contamination remediation. Moreover, biochar-based microbial inoculants including probiotics effectively promote plant growth and remediate soil contaminated with organic pollutants. These findings suggest that biochar can serve as a promising substitute for non-renewable substrates, such as peat, to formulate and deliver microbial inoculants. The future research directions in relation to improving the carrier material performance and expanding the potential applications of this emerging biochar-based microbial immobilization technology have been proposed.

Advances in the Removal of Cr(III) from Spent Industrial Effluents-A Review

The review presents advances in the removal of Cr(III) from the industrial effluents published in the last ten years. Although Cr(III) has low solubility and is less dangerous for the aquatic environment than Cr(VI), it cannot be released into the aquatic environment without limitations and its content in water should be restricted. The development of efficient techniques for the removal of Cr(III) is also a response to the problem of chromium wastewater containing Cr(VI) ions. Very often the first step in dealing with such wastewater is the reduction in chromium content. In some cases, removal of Cr(III) from wastewaters is an important step for pretreatment of solutions to prepare them for subsequent recovery of other metals. In the review, hydrometallurgical operations for Cr(III) removal are presented, including examples of Cr(III) recovery from real industrial effluents with precipitation, adsorption, ion exchange, extraction, membrane techniques, microbial-enhanced techniques, electrochemical methods. The advantages and disadvantages of the operations mentioned are also presented. Finally, perspectives for the future in line with circular economy and low-environmental impact are briefly discussed.

Immobilization of Biomass Materials for Removal of Refractory Organic Pollutants from Wastewater

In the field of environmental science and engineering, microorganisms, enzymes and algae are promising biomass materials that can effectively degrade pollutants. However, problems such as poor environmental adaptability, recycling difficulties, and secondary pollution exist in the practical application of non-immobilized biomass materials. Biomass immobilization is a novel environmental remediation technology that can effectively solve these problems. Compared with non-immobilized biomass, immobilized biomass materials have the advantages of reusability and stability in terms of pH, temperature, handling, and storage. Many researchers have studied immobilization technology (i.e., methods, carriers, and biomass types) and its applications for removing refractory organic pollutants. Based on this, this paper reviews biomass immobilization technology, outlines the mechanisms and factors affecting the removal of refractory organic pollutants, and introduces the application of immobilized biomass materials as fillers for reactors in water purification. This review provides some practical references for the preparation and application of immobilized biomass materials and promotes further research and development to expand the application range of this material for water purification.

The removal of selenite and cadmium by immobilized biospheres: Efficiency, mechanisms and bacterial community

In this study, a complex bacterial consortium was enriched from a typical Pb-Zn mine area and immobilized by sodium alginate to form biospheres, which were used for treatment of selenite (Se(IV))- and cadmium (Cd(II))-containing wastewater without external carbon source. Batch experiments showed that the maximum Se(IV) removal efficiency was 92.36% under the optimal conditions of an initial pH of 5, dosage of 5 g/L, initial Se(IV) concentration of 7.9 mg/L and reaction time of 168 h. Subsequently, more than 99% of 11.2 mg/L Cd(II) was removed by the biospheres within 10 h. Physicochemical characterization showed that reduction and adsorption were the main mechanisms for Se(IV) and Cd(II) removal, respectively. During the removal process, selenium and CdSe nanoparticles were formed. Bacterial community analysis showed the dominant bacterial genera changed after treatment of Se(IV)- and Cd(II)-containing wastewater. Additionally, 16S rRNA gene function prediction results showed that amino acid transport, carbohydrate transport, ion transport and metabolism were the dominant gene functions. The present study provides a potential way for the biological treatment of Se(IV)- and Cd(II)-containing wastewater using immobilized biospheres without external carbon source in short-term.

Calcium ion biorecovery from industrial wastewater by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens DMS6

Calcium ions in industrial wastewater needs to be removed to prevent the production of limescale, which can have negative consequences. Biomineralization has become the focus due to its lower costs than traditional methods of remediation. In this study, calcium ions were bio-precipitated under the action of free and immobilized Bacillus amyloliquefaciens DMS6 bacteria, and the calcium ion removal efficiency was also compared. The results show that it only needed 3 days to decrease the calcium ion concentration to an ideal level of 76-116 mg/L under the action of DMS6 bacteria immobilized by activated carbon fiber, with calcium ion removal ratios reaching 99%-95% by the 7^th day. DMS6 bacteria immobilized by activated carbon fiber were superior to free bacteria and bacteria immobilized by sodium alginate in calcium ion removal. Calcium ions are biomineralized into calcite, Mg-rich calcite, aragonite and monohydrocalcite with abundant organic functional groups, 4 types of secondary protein structures, amino acids, phospholipids, negative stable carbon isotope δ¹³C_PDB values (-16.68‰ to-17.25‰) and negatively charged biomineral surface. Calcium ions were diffused into cells and took part in the intracellular biomineralization of monohydrocalcite, also facilitating calcium ion removal. The formation of intracellular monohydrocalcite has rarely been reported. This study demonstrates an economic and environmentally friendly method to remove calcium ions from industrial wastewater.

Bioreduction and bioremoval of hexavalent chromium by genetically engineered strains (Escherichia coli MT2A and Escherichia coli MT3)

The number of studies on the removal of hazardous metals from water using genetic engineering technologies is growing. A high rate of metal ion removal from the environment is ensured, particularly through the expression of cysteine and thiol-rich proteins such as metallothioneins in bacterial cells. In this study, we used recombinant strains created by cloning the human metallothioneins MT2A and MT3 into Escherichia coli Jm109 to assess the removal and reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from aqueous solutions. MT2A was the most effective strain in both Cr(VI) removal (89% in 25 mg/L Cr(VI)) and Cr(VI) reduction (76% in 25 mg/L Cr(VI)). The amount of Cr adsorbed per dry cell by the MT2A strain was 22 mg/g. The biosorption of total Cr was consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images revealed that the morphological structures of Cr(VI)-treated cells were significantly damaged when compared to control cells. Scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) images showed black spots in the cytoplasm of cells treated with Cr(VI). Shifts in the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR) spectra of the cells treated with Cr(VI) showed that the groups interacting with Cr were hydroxyl, amine, amide I, amide II, phosphoryl and carbonyl. When all of the experimental data was combined, it was determined that both MT2A and MT3 were effective in removing Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions, but MT2A was more effective, indicating that MT2A may be employed as a biotechnological tool.

Application of microbial immobilization technology for remediation of Cr(VI) contamination: A review

The discharge of chromium (Cr) contaminated wastewater is creating a serious threat to aquatic environment due to the rapid pace in agricultural and industrial activities. Particularly, the long-term exposure of Cr(VI) polluted wastewater to the environment is causing serious harm to human health. Therefore, the treatment of Cr(VI) contaminated wastewater is demanding widespread attention. Regarding this, the bioremediation is being considered as a reliable and feasible option to handle Cr(VI) contaminated wastewater because of having low technical investment and operating costs. However, certain factors such as loss of microorganisms, toxicity to microorganisms and uneven microbial growth cycle in the presence of high concentrations of Cr(VI) are hindering its commercial applications. Regarding this, microbial immobilization technology (MIT) is getting great research interest because it could overcome the shortcomings of bioremediation technology's poor tolerance against Cr. Therefore, this review is the first attempt to emphases recent research developments in the remediation of Cr(VI) contamination via MIT. Starting from the selection of immobilized carrier, the present review is designed to critically discuss the various microbial immobilizing methods i.e., adsorption, embedding, covalent binding and medium interception. Further, the mechanism of Cr(VI) removal by immobilized microorganism has also been explored, precisely. In addition, three kinds of microorganism immobilization devices have been critically examined. Finally, knowledge gaps/key challenges and future perspectives are also discussed that would be helpful for the experts in improving MIT for the remediation of Cr(VI) contamination.
