Efficient reduction of antimony by sulfate-reducer enriched bio-cathode with hydrogen production in a microbial electrolysis cell

Review of cathodic electroactive bacteria: Species, properties, applications and electron transfer mechanisms

Cathodic electroactive bacteria (C-EAB) which are capable of accepting electrons from solid electrodes provide fresh avenues for pollutant removal, biosensor design, and electrosynthesis. This review systematically summarized the burgeoning applications of the C-EAB over the past decade, including 1) removal of nitrate, aromatic derivatives, and metal ions; 2) biosensing based on biocathode; 3) electrosynthesis of CH4, H2, organic carbon, NH3, and protein. In addition, the mechanisms of electron transfer by the C-EAB are also classified and summarized. Extracellular electron transfer and interspecies electron transfer have been introduced, and the electron transport mechanism of typical C-EAB, such as Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, has been combed in detail. By bringing to light this cutting-edge area of the C-EAB, this review aims to stimulate more interest and research on not only exploring great potential applications of these electron-accepting bacteria, but also developing steady and scalable processes harnessing biocathodes.

A review of passive acid mine drainage treatment by PRB and LPB: From design, testing, to construction

An extensive volume of acid mine drainage (AMD) generated throughout the mining process has been widely regarded as one of the most catastrophic environmental problems. Surface water and groundwater impacted by pollution exhibit extreme low pH values and elevated sulfate and metal/metalloid concentrations, posing a serious threat to the production efficiency of enterprises, domestic water safety, and the ecological health of the basin. Over the recent years, a plethora of techniques has been developed to address the issue of AMD, encompassing nanofiltration membranes, lime neutralization, and carrier-microencapsulation. Nonetheless, these approaches often come with substantial financial implications and exhibit restricted long-term sustainability. Among the array of choices, the permeable reactive barrier (PRB) system emerges as a noteworthy passive remediation method for AMD. Distinguished by its modest construction expenses and enduring stability, this approach proves particularly well-suited for addressing the environmental challenges posed by abandoned mines. This study undertook a comprehensive evaluation of the PRB systems utilized in the remediation of AMD. Furthermore, it introduced the concept of low permeability barrier, derived from the realm of site-contaminated groundwater management. The strategies pertaining to the selection of materials, the physicochemical aspects influencing long-term efficacy, the intricacies of design and construction, as well as the challenges and prospects inherent in barrier technology, are elaborated upon in this discourse.

Enhanced Sb(V) removal of sulfate-rich wastewater by anaerobic granular sludge assisted with Fe/C amendment

Antimony (Sb) and sulfate are two common pollutants in Sb mine drainage and Sb-containing textile wastewater. In this paper, it was found that iron‑carbon (Fe/C) enhanced Sb(V) removal from sulfate-rich wastewater by anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS). Sulfate inhibited Sb(V) removal (S + Sb, k = 0.101), while Fe/C alleviated the inhibition and increased Sb(V) removal rate by 2.3 times (Fe/C + S + Sb, k = 0.236). Fe/C could promote the removal of Sb(III), and Sb(III) content decreased significantly after 8 h. Meanwhile, Fe/C enhanced the removal of sulfate. The 3D-EEM spectrum of supernatant in Fe/C + S + Sb group (at 24 h) showed that Fe/C stimulated the production of soluble microbial products (SMP) in wastewater. SMP alleviated the inhibition of sulfate, promoting AnGS to reduce Sb(V). Sb(V) could be reduced to Sb(III) both by AnGS and sulfides produced from sulfate reduction. Further analysis of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and AnGS showed that Fe/C increased the adsorbed Sb(V) in EPS and the c-type cytochrome content in AnGS, which may be beneficial for Sb(V) removal. Sb(V) reduction in Fe/C + S + Sb group may be related to the genus Acinetobacter, while in Sb group, several bacteria may be involved in Sb(V) reduction, such as Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas and Corynebacterium. This study provided insights into Fe/C-enhanced Sb(V) removal from sulfate-rich wastewater.

Electroactive microorganism-assisted remediation of groundwater contamination: Advances and challenges

Groundwater contamination has become increasingly prominent, therefore, the development of efficient remediation technology is crucial for improving groundwater quality. Bioremediation is cost-effective and environmentally friendly, while coexisting pollutant stress can affect microbial processes, and the heterogeneous character of groundwater medium can induce bioavailability limitations and electron donor/acceptor imbalances. Electroactive microorganisms (EAMs) are advantageous in contaminated groundwater because of their unique bidirectional electron transfer mechanism, which allows them to use solid electrodes as electron donors/acceptors. However, the relatively low-conductivity groundwater environment is unfavorable for electron transfer, which becomes a bottleneck problem that limits the remediation efficiency of EAMs. Therefore, this study reviews the recent advances and challenges of EAMs applied in the groundwater environment with complex coexisting ions, heterogeneity, and low conductivity and proposes corresponding future directions.

Effect of iron cyclic transformation on the natural purification of antimony in contaminated reservoirs of mines

To further understand the purification mechanism of antimony (Sb) in reservoirs, samples of stratified water and bottom interface sediment were collected in this study. The cross-flow ultrafiltration technique was used to separate the truly dissolved (<1 kDa) and colloidal (1 kDa-0.45 μm) phases of water, and two modified sequential extraction techniques were used to determine the Sb and Fe mineral forms in sediment, respectively. The results showed that the total Sb concentration could decrease from 142.2 μg/L in surface water to 98.6 μg/L at 16 m; this was contributed to by the removal of truly dissolved Sb. In comparison to particulate Sb (>0.45 μm), the formation of colloidal Sb played a greater role in the purification process. There was a positive correlation between Sb and Fe in the colloidal phase (r = 0.45, P < 0.05). The generation of colloidal Fe could be promoted by higher temperatures, pH values, DO, and DOC in the upper layer (0-5 m). However, the complexation of DOC with colloidal Fe inhibited the adsorption of truly dissolved Sb. After entering the sediment, the secondary release of Sb could not increase the Sb concentration in the lower layer obviously, while the supplementation of Fe(III) could further enhance Sb natural purification.

Putting the electro-bugs to work: A systematic review of 22 years of advances in bio-electrochemical systems and the parameters governing their performance

Wastewater treatment using bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) can be considered as a technology finding application in versatile areas such as for renewable energy production and simultaneous reducing environmental problems, biosensors, and bioelectrosynthesis. This review paper reports and critically discusses the challenges, and advances in bio-electrochemical studies in the 21st century. To sum and critically analyze the strides of the last 20+ years on the topic, this study first provides a comprehensive analysis on the structure, performance, and application of BESs, which include Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs), Microbial Electrolysis Cells (MECs) and Microbial Desalination Cells (MDCs). We focus on the effect of various parameters, such as electroactive microbial community structure, electrode material, configuration of bioreactors, anode unit volume, membrane type, initial COD, co-substrates and the nature of the input wastewater in treatment process and the amount of energy and fuel production, with the purpose of showcasing the modes of operation as a guide for future studies. The results of this review show that the BES have great potential in reducing environmental pollution, purifying saltwater, and producing energy and fuel. At a larger scale, it aspires to facilitate the path of achieving sustainable development and practical application of BES in real-world scenarios.

Promoted Sb removal with hydrogen production in microbial electrolysis cell by ZIF-67-derived modified sulfate-reducing bacteria bio-cathode

Bio-cathode Microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) has been widely discovered for heavy metals removal and hydrogen production. However, low electron transfer efficiency and heavy metal toxicity limit MEC treatment efficiency. In this study, ZIF-67 was introduced to modify Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) bio-cathode to enhance the bioreduction of sulfate and Antimony (Sb) with hydrogen production in the MEC. ZIF-67 modified bio-cathode was developed from a bio-anode microbial fuel cell (MFC) by operating with an applied voltage of 0.8 V to reverse the polarity. Cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry and electrochemical impedance were done to confirm the performance of the ZIF-67 modified SRB bio-cathode. The synergy reduction of sulfate and Sb was accomplished by sulfide metal precipitation reaction from SRB itself. Maximum sulfate reduction rate approached 93.37 % and Sb removal efficiency could reach 92 %, which relies on the amount of sulfide concentration generated by sulfate reduction reaction, with 0.923 ± 0.04 m³ H₂/m³ of hydrogen before adding Sb and 0.857 m³ H₂/m³ of hydrogen after adding Sb. The hydrogen was mainly produced in this system and the result of gas chromatography (GC) indicated that 73.27 % of hydrogen was produced. Meanwhile the precipitates were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to confirm Sb₂S₃ was generated from Sb (V).

Biocathode prepared at low anodic potentials achieved a higher response for water biotoxicity monitoring after polarity reversal

Microbial electrochemical sensors equipped with biocathode sensing elements have attracted a growing interest, but their startup and recovery properties remain unclear. In this study, the approach of polarity reversal was applied for the biocathode sensing element fabrication and biosensor recovery. The stimulating/suppressing effect of formaldehyde was determined by the anode potential before polarity reversal as well as the increased trials of toxic exposure. Increasing anode potential from -0.3 V to +0.3 V before polarity reversal, the baseline electric signal was changed from -0.028 ± 0.001 mA to -0.005 ± 0.003 mA, while the maximum normalized electrical signal (NES) was increased from 1.1 ± 0.1 to 4.1 ± 1.9, and thus a general downtrend was observed for Response as a newly induced indicator. Polarity reversal failed to recover the electroactivity of these poisoned bioelectrodes. This study demonstrated that electrode potential was critical when using the approach of polarity reversal to construct the biocathode sensing element, and revealed an urgent need for strategies toward high recoverability of such biosensors.

Insight of the bio-cathode biofilm construction in microbial electrolysis cell dealing with sulfate-containing wastewater

Signaling molecules are useful in biofilm formation, but the mechanism for biofilm construction still needs to be explored. In this study, a signaling molecule, N-butyryl-l-Homoserine lactone (C₄-HSL), was supplied to enhance the construction of the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) bio-cathode biofilm in microbial electrolysis cell (MEC). The sulfate reduction efficiency was more than 90% in less time under the system with C₄-HSL addition. The analysis of SRB bio-cathode biofilms indicated that the activity, distribution, microbial population, and secretion of extracellular polymers prompted by C₄-HSL, which accelerate the sulfate reduction, in particular for the assimilatory sulfate reduction pathway. Specifically, the relative abundance of acidogenic fermentation bacteria increased, and Desulfovibrio was co-metabolized with acidogenic fermentation bacteria. This knowledge will help to reveal the potential of signaling molecules to enhance the SRB bio-cathode biofilm MEC construction and improve the performance of treating sulfate-containing wastewater.

Enhanced biological antimony removal from water by combining elemental sulfur autotrophic reduction and disproportionation

Antimony (Sb), a toxic metalloid, has serious negative effects on human health and its pollution has become a global environmental problem. Bio-reduction of Sb(V) is an effective Sb-removal approach. This work, for the first time, demonstrates the feasibility of autotrophic Sb(V) bio-reduction and removal coupled to anaerobic oxidation of elemental sulfur (S⁰). In the S⁰-based biological system, Sb(V) was reduced to Sb(III) via autotrophic bacteria by using S⁰ as electron donor. Meanwhile, S⁰ disproportionation reaction occurred under anaerobic condition, generating sulfide and SO₄^2- in the bio-systems. Subsequently, Sb(III) reacted with sulfide and formed Sb(III)-S precipitate, achieving an effective total Sb removal. The precipitate was identified as Sb₂S₃ by SEM-EDS, XPS, XRD and Raman spectrum analyses. In addition, it was found that co-existing nitrate inhibited the Sb removal, as nitrate is the favored electron acceptor over Sb(V). In contrast, the bio-reduction of co-existing SO₄^2- enhanced sulfide generation, followed by promoting Sb(V) reduction and precipitation. Illumina high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that Metallibacterium, Citrobacter and Thiobacillus might be responsible for Sb(V) reduction and S⁰ disproportionation. This study provides a promising approach for the remediation of Sb(V)-contaminated water.

Antimony redox processes in the environment: A critical review of associated oxidants and reductants

The environmental behavior of antimony (Sb) has recently received greater attention due to the increasing global use of Sb in a range of industrial applications. Although present at trace levels in most natural systems, elevated Sb concentrations in aquatic and terrestrial environments may result from anthropogenic activities. The mobility and toxicity of Sb largely depend on its speciation, which is dependent to a large extent on its oxidation state. To a certain extent, our understanding of the environmental behavior of Sb has been informed by studies of the environmental behavior of arsenic (As), as Sb and As have somewhat similar chemical properties. However, recently it has become evident that the speciation of Sb and As, especially in the context of redox reactions, may be fundamentally different. Therefore, it is crucial to study the biogeochemical processes impacting Sb redox transformations to understand the behavior of Sb in natural and engineered environments. Currently, there is a growing body of literature involving the speciation, mobility, toxicity, and remediation of Sb, and several reviews on these general topics are available; however, a comprehensive review focused on Sb environmental redox chemistry is lacking. This paper provides a review of research conducted within the past two decades examining the redox chemistry of Sb in aquatic and terrestrial environments and identifies knowledge gaps that need to be addressed to develop a better understanding of Sb biogeochemistry for improved management of Sb in natural and engineered systems.

Efficient removal of Sb(Ⅴ) from water using sulphidated ferrihydrite via tripuhyite (FeSbO4) precipitation and complexation

Elevated concentrations of antimony (Sb) in the ecological environment have received considerable attention due to the harmful consequence involved. This study synthesized sulphidated ferrihydrite with different S:Fe molar ratios to efficiently remove Sb(V) from water. As the S:Fe molar ratio ranged from 0.00 to 1.48, the removal efficiency of Sb(V) by sulphidated ferrihydrite first decreased before increasing considerably. Sulphidated ferrihydrite with an S:Fe molar ratio of 0.74 exhibited a strong affinity towards Sb(V) with an optimal removal capacity of 963.74 mg Sb/g, which was 3.2-fold higher than that of ferrihydrite. In the kinetic experiments, the removal behavior of Sb(V) was well described by the pseudo-second-order model, suggesting that the removal process was controlled via chemisorption. Moreover, Sb(V) was efficiently removed over a wide pH range of 3.00-11.00, and coexisting anions (NO₃^-, Cl^-, SO₄^2-, SiO₃^2-, CO₃^2- and PO₄^3-) exhibited marginal impact on the Sb(V) removal by sulphidated ferrihydrite (S:Fe ≥ 0.44). The characterization results of XRD, SEM, TEM mapping and etched XPS revealed goethite to be the dominant phase of sulphidated ferrihydrite with an S:Fe molar ratio of 0.15, while a mixed constitution of mixed-valent iron (hydro)oxides and iron sulphide was formed when the S:Fe molar ratio exceeded 0.44. Moreover, sulphidated ferrihydrite acted as a donor for Fe and S for the effective retention of Sb(V) by two main pathways: precipitation (tripuhyite, FeSbO₄) and complexation (≡S-H and ≡Fe-OH). Therefore, sulphidated ferrihydrite is a promising material for eliminating Sb(V) contamination from water.

Antimony reduction by a non-conventional sulfate reducer with simultaneous bioenergy production in microbial fuel cells

Environmental toxicity of antimony (Sb) is significantly increased through the widespread industrial application. The extended release of Sb above the regulatory level became a risk to humans habituated in the ecosystem. Conventional methods to remediate Sb demand high energy or resource input, which further leads to secondary pollution. The bio-electrochemical system offers a promising bioremediation strategy to remove or reduce toxic heavy metals. Thus, this research explores the possibilities of simultaneous metal sulfide (MeS) precipitation and electricity production using a full biological Microbial fuel cell (MFC). A non-conventional sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) Citrobacter freundii SR10 was used for this investigation, where the MFC was operated for lactate utilization in the bio-anode and Sb reduction at the bio-cathode. This study observed 81% of coulombic efficiency (bio-anode) and 97% of sulfate reduction with 99.3% Sb (V) reduction (bio-cathode), and it was concluded that the MeS precipitation entirely depends on sulfide concentration via SR10 sulfate reduction. The MFC-SR10 offers a maximum power density of 1652.9 ± 32.1 mW/m^3, and their performance was depicted using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The Sb reduction was evaluated through fluorescence spectroscopy, and the Sb (V) MeS precipitation was confirmed as stibnite (Sb₂S₃) by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, the matured anodic and cathodic biofilm formation was confirmed by Scanning electron microscopy with Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Thus the MFC with SRB bio-cathode can be used as an alternative to simultaneously remove sulfate and Sb from the wastewater with electricity production.

Harnessing electrical-to-biochemical conversion for microbial synthesis

Electrical-to-biochemical conversion (E2BC) drives cell metabolism for biosynthesis and has become a promising way to realize green biomanufacturing. This review discusses the following aspects: 1. the natural E2BC processes and their underlying E2BC mechanism; 2. development of artificial E2BC for tunable microbial electrosynthesis; 3. design of electrobiochemical systems using self-powered, light-assisted, and nano-biohybrid approaches; 4. synthetic biology methods for efficient microbial electrosynthesis. This review also compares E2BC with electrocatalysis-biochemical conversion (EC2BC), as both strategies may lead to future carbon negative green biomanufacturing.
