Spatial and temporal variations of Cu and Cd mobility and their controlling factors in pore water of contaminated paddy soil under acid mine drainage: A laboratory column study

Temporal and spatial evolution of different heavy metal fractions and correlation with environmental factors after prolonged acid mine drainage irrigation: A column experiment

Acid mine drainage (AMD) has global significance due to its low pH and elevated heavy metal content, which have received widespread attention. After AMD irrigation in mining areas, heavy metals are distributed among soil layers, but the influencing factors and mechanisms remain unclear. AMD contamination of surrounding soil is primarily attributed to surface runoff and irrigation and causes significant environmental degradation. A laboratory soil column experiment was conducted to investigate the temporal and spatial distribution of the heavy metals Cd and Cu, as well as the impact of key environmental factors on the migration and transformation of these heavy metals following long-term soil pollution by AMD. After AMD addition, the soil exhibited a significant increase in acidity, accompanied by notable alterations in various environmental parameters, including soil pH, Eh, Fe(II) content, and iron oxide content. Over time, Cd and Cu in the soil mainly existed in the exchangeable and carbonate-bound fractions. In spatial terms, exchangeable Cu increased with increasing depth. Pearson correlation analysis indicated significant negative correlations between pH and Cu, Cd, and Eh in pore water, as well as negative correlations between pH and the exchangeable fraction of Cd (F1), carbonate-bound fraction of Cd (F2), and exchangeable fraction of Cu (F1) in the solid phase. Additionally, a positive correlation was observed between pH and the residual fraction of Cu (F5). Furthermore, the soil total Cd content exhibited a positive correlation with pyrophosphate-Fe (Fep) and dithionite-Fe (Fed), while CdF1, CdF2, total Cu, and CuF1 displayed positive correlations with Fep. Our findings indicate that the presence of AMD in soil leads to alterations in the chemical fractions of Cd and Cu, resulting in enhanced bioavailability. These results offer valuable insights for developing effective remediation strategies for soils near mining sites.

Potential mobilization of water-dispersible colloidal thallium and arsenic in contaminated soils and sediments in mining areas of southwest China

Water-dispersible colloids (WDCs) are vital for trace element migration, but there is limited information about the abundance, size distribution and elemental composition of WDC-bound thallium (Tl) and arsenic (As) in mining-contaminated soils and sediments solutions. Here, we investigated the potential mobilization of WDC-bound Tl and As in soils and sediments in a typical Tl/As-contaminated area. Ultrafiltration results revealed on average > 60% of Tl and As in soil solution (< 220 nm) coexisted in colloidal form whereas Tl and As in sediment solution primarily existed in the truly dissolved state (< 10 kDa) due to increased acidity. Using AF4-UV-ICP-MS and STEM-EDS, we identified Fe-bearing WDCs in association with aluminosilicate minerals and organic matter were main carriers of Tl and As. SAED further verified jarosite nanoparticles were important components of soil WDC, directly participating in the migration of Tl and As. Notably, high pollution levels and solution pH promoted the release of Tl/As-containing WDCs. This study provides quantitative and visual insights into the distribution of Tl and As in WDC, highlighting the important roles of Fe-bearing WDC, soil solution pH and pollution level in the potential mobilization of Tl and As in contaminated soils and sediments.

Revealing the release and migration mechanism of heavy metals in typical carbonate tailings, East China

Refining the occurrence characteristics of tailings hazardous materials at source is of great importance for pollution management and ecological reclamation. However, the release and transport of heavy metals (HMs) from tailings under rainfall drenching in simulated real-world environments is less well portrayed, particularly highlighting the inherent neutralisation in tailings wastes under superimposed dynamic conditions. In this study, dynamic leaching columns simulating actual conditions were used to observe the release and transport of HMs from tailings under acid rainfall infiltration at spatial and temporal scales. The release rate of trace elements (e.g., As, Cr, Ni, Pb, Cd) is high. Neutralisation in the presence of carbonate rocks in the gangue reduces HMs release intensity from tailings with high heavy metal content, along with the precipitation of iron oxides and chromium-bearing minerals, etc. In addition, the vertical differentiation of HMs is more relevant to physical processes. In the absence of carbonate rocks in gangue, the lowest pH value is reached within 1.2 h after acid rain infiltrates the tailings. At the same time, Cu, Zn and Cd are released significantly from the minerals at the superficial level. The release of As(III) is mainly concentrated in the early and late stages of water-rock contact.

Transport and fate of Cu and Cd in contaminated paddy soil under acid mine drainage

Long-term heavy metals accumulation caused by acid mine drainage (AMD) irrigation in paddy soils poses a severe threat to environmental health. However, the soil adsorption mechanisms under AMD flooding remain unclear. This study provides key insights into the fate of heavy metals in soil, particularly the retention and mobility mechanisms of Cu (copper) and Cd (cadmium) after AMD flooding. The migration and fate of Cu and Cd in uncontaminated paddy soils treated by AMD in Dabaoshan Mining area was investigated via column leaching experiments in the laboratory. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cu (658.04 mg kg^-1) and Cd (335.20 mg kg^-1) cations were predicted and the breakthrough curves were fitted using the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models. Our findings demonstrated that Cd was more mobile than Cu. Furthermore, the soil had a greater adsorption capacity for Cu than Cd. Tessier's five-step extraction method was used to determine Cu and Cd fractions in leached soils at different depths and times. After AMD leaching, the relative and absolute concentrations of the easily mobile forms were all increased at different soil depths, thus increasing the potential risk to the groundwater system. Mineralogical characterization of the soil indicated that AMD flooding leads to the formation of mackinawite. This study provides insights into the distribution and transportation processes of soil Cu and Cd and their ecological effects under AMD flooding, as well as a theoretical basis for the establishment of corresponding geochemical evolution models and environmental governance in mining areas.

Environmental impact of e-waste management in Indian microscale informal sectors

Inappropriate e-waste processing in the informal sector is a serious issue in developing countries. Field investigations in microscale informal recycling sites have been performed to study the impact of hazardous metal(loid)s (released from e-waste dismantling) on the environment (water and soil). Eight hazardous metal(loid)s (Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, As, Hg, Ni, and Cr) were primarily found in the monitored water and soil samples (Sangrampur, West Bengal) because of widespread informal e-waste handling and primitive processing. Elevated concentrations of Cd, Pb, As, Cu, and Cr were observed in pond water samples (0.04, 1.62, 0.03, 1.40, 1.74 mg/L respectively). These ponds, which are regularly used for e-waste handling/dismantling, are usually flooded during the monsoon season mixing with further larger water resources - posing a serious threat to public health. Enriched levels of Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn were detected in collected soil samples, both top surface soil (Pb up to 2042.27 ± 206.80, Cd up to 25.90 ± 9.53, Cu up to 6967.30 ± 711.70, and Zn up to 657.10 ± 67.05 mg/Kg) and deeper subsurface soil (Pb, 419.70 ± 44.70; Cd, 18.34 ± 3.81; Cu, 3928.60 ± 356.40; and Zn, 134.40 ± 33.40 mg/Kg), compared to the levels of As, Hg, Ni, and Cr. Seasonal variation of soil metal(loid) content indicated that higher levels of most of the metal(loids) were detected in the pre-monsoon (Nov-May) season, possibly due to the monsoonal dilution effect, except for Pb and Cd. The results highlighted that the composition and the handling of e-waste were important factors affecting the metal(loid) concentrations. E-waste policy and legislation have great influence on the handling and disposal procedures. An improved e-waste management practice has been proposed to encourage eco-friendly and safe e-waste disposal. It is recommended that regulatory agencies and manufacturers should create a road map to convince the informal sector to develop a systematic approach towards a more standardized formal e-waste management practices at the microscale field level.

Potential mobilization of cadmium and zinc in soils spiked with smithsonite and sphalerite under different water management regimes

Particulate cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) are ubiquitous in agricultural soils of Pb-Zn mining regions. Water management serves as an important agronomic measure altering the bioavailability of Zn and Cd in soils, but how this affects particulate Cd and Zn and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Microcosm soil incubation combined with spectroscopic and microscopic characterization was conducted. During a two-year-long incubation period we observed that the concentrations of soil CaCl₂-extractable Zn and Cd increased 3-10 times in sphalerite-spiked soils and 1-2 times in smithsonite-spiked soils under periodic flooding conditions due to the long-term dissolution of sphalerite (SP) and smithsonite (SM). However, the increase in the concentration of CaCl₂-extractable metals (Zn: from 0.607 mg kg^-1 to 1.051 mg kg^-1 and Cd: from 0.047 mg kg^-1 to 0.119 mg kg^-1) was found only in SP-treatment under continuous flooding conditions, indicating the mobilization of metals. Ultrafiltration analysis shows that the nanoparticulate fraction of Zn and Cd in soil pore water increased 5 and 7 times in SP-treatments under continuous flooding conditions, suggesting the increment of metal pools in soil pore water. HRTEM-EDX-SAED further reveals that these nanoparticles were mainly crystalline ZnS and Zn-bearing sulfate nanoparticles in the SP-treatment and amorphous ZnCO₃ and ZnS nanoparticles in the SM-treatment. Therefore, the formation of the stable crystalline Zn-bearing nanoparticles in the SP-treatment may explain the elevation of the concentration of soil CaCl₂-extractable Zn and Cd under continuous flooding. The potential mobility of particulate metals should therefore be expected in scenarios of continuous flooding such as paddy soils and wetland systems.

Multiple geochemical and microbial processes regulated by redox and organic matter control the vertical heterogeneity of As and Cd in paddy soil

The heterogeneity of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in paddy soils seriously hinders the assessment of contamination status and prediction of rice uptake. Their vertical patterns across different environmental conditions and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. In this study, maximum vertical differences of bioavailable As and Cd within 0-30 cm depth in paddy soils were 4.1-fold and four orders of magnitude, respectively. The vertical patterns of As and Cd followed the vertical redox gradient in long-term reduced paddies, but were shaped by the vertical pH gradient derived from acidic wastewater irrigation in partly oxidized soils. Iron(III)- and sulfate-reducing bacteria played key roles in the formation of vertical pH gradient and the immobilization of As and Cd by iron (hydr)oxides and sulfides under varied redox conditions. Soil redox and organic matter determined the transition between these two mechanisms via regulating microbial iron(III) and sulfate reduction processes. The work proposes that soil vertical As and Cd patterns directly affect the accumulation of As and Cd in different rice cultivars with different vertical root patterns. This is the first study elucidating the controlling mechanisms governing the vertical As and Cd patterns in paddy fields, providing important references to identify, manage and remediate contaminated paddy fields.

Spatial and temporal variations of metal fractions in paddy soil flooding with acid mine drainage

Environmental release of acid mine drainage (AMD) poses a potential threat to the environment and human health due to its high content of heavy metals. The impact of AMD flooding on unpolluted soil leads to serious pollution over time via a complex process, related to the geochemical behavior of toxic metals that so far has only been partially investigated. Here, a soil column study was conducted to investigate the migration of Cu and Cd fractions in unpolluted paddy soil following treatment with AMD collected from the Dabaoshan Mining area. Tessier's sequential extraction was performed to fractionate the metals at various depths over time. After 160 days of experimental flooding, the soil pH stabilized at 2.52 at a column depth of 5 cm. The fractions of Cu and Cd that were highly mobile increased significantly during AMD flooding. For Cd, the latter already occurred on day 67. At a depth of 20 cm, the total content of Cu maximally increased from initially 26.89 mg kg^-1 to 696.96 mg kg^-1 on day 160, while the content of Cd maximally increased from 0.22 mg kg^-1 to 391.30 mg kg^-1 on day 67. Reduced partition index analysis conformed that the mobility of both Cu and Cd significantly increased in contaminated soil during continuous AMD flooding. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) identified a changed distribution of the elements in the soil, with Fe appearing to have aggregated. The correlation analysis between Cu and Cd in pore water and in different fractions in the soil's solid phase identified a dynamic distribution of these metals in certain geochemical components during their migration. The results of this study contribute to a scientific foundation to describe the geochemical behavior of heavy metals in soil subject to AMD flooding.

Co-high-efficiency washing agents for simultaneous removal of Cd, Pb and As from smelting soil with risk assessment

Soil washing is considered a highly efficient technology due to its higher removal rate of multiple heavy metals from contaminated soil. However, previous studies on Cd, Pb and As washing agents for soils with complex contaminations did not consider the differences in As and Cd/Pb properties, resulting in the lack of effective washing compounds and washing conditions for soils with complex contaminations. Moreover, most traditional washing agents can cause secondary pollution. In this study, HEDTA and lactic acid (LA) treatments resulted in a higher Cd and Pb removal, while 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) was more effective in As removal. Most importantly, a new washing strategy was proposed with a new combined high-efficiency washing agents consisting of HEDP + LA + FeCl₃ with a ratio of 6:3:1. Considering washing efficiency and consumption under optimal washing conditions, i.e. the soil/liquid (S/L) ratio of 1:20 and washing time of 48 h, the rates of Cd, Pb and As removal were 79.93%, 69.84% and 61.55%, respectively. In addition, washing process could influence the speciation of heavy metals, especially oxidizable and residual Cd and Pb fractions, as well as reducible As fraction. The washing process using the new washing agent can significantly reduce the pollution level and health risk of Cd, Pb and As contamination. The results of this study can provide an efficient washing agent for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils at smelting sites, which will help protect human health.

The Aging Process of Cadmium in Paddy Soils under Intermittent Irrigation with Acid Water: A Short-Term Simulation Experiment

Cadmium (Cd)-contaminated paddy soils are a big concern. However, the effect of irrigation with acid water on the migration and transformation of Cd and the effect of alternating redox conditions caused by intermittent irrigation on Cd aging processes in different depths of paddy soils are unclear. This study revealed Cd fractionation and aging in a Cd-contaminated paddy soil under four irrigation periods with acid water and four drainage periods, by applying a soil columns experiment and a sequential extraction procedure. The results showed that the dynamic changes of soil pH, oxidation reduction potential (ORP), iron (Fe) oxides and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) throughout the intermittent irrigation affected the transformation of Cd fractions. After 32 days, the proportion of exchangeable Cd (F1) to the total Cd decreased with a reduction of 24.4% and 20.1% at the topsoil and the subsoil, respectively. The labile fractions of Cd decreased, and the more immobilizable fractions of Cd increased in the different depths of soils due to the aging process. Additionally, the redistribution of the Fe and Mn oxide-bound Cd (F3) and organic matter and secondary-sulfide-bound Cd (F4) occurred at different depths of soils during the incubation time. Overall, the bioaccessibility of Cd in the subsoil was higher than that in the topsoil, which was likely due to the leaching and accumulation of soluble Cd in the deep soil. In addition, the aging processes in different depths of soils were divided into three stages, which can be mainly described as the transformation of F1 into F3 and F4.
