A systems engineering framework for the optimization of food supply chains under circular economy considerations

Bibliometric analysis of Advanced Oxidation Processes studies with a focus on Life Cycle Assessment and Costs

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are wastewater treatment technologies that stand out for their ability to degrade Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs). The literature has extensively investigated these removal processes for different aqueous matrices. Once technically mature, some of these systems have become accredited to be applied on a large scale, and therefore, their systemic performances in the environmental and cost spheres have also become essential requirements. This study proposed corroborating this trend, analyzing the available literature on the subject to verify how experts in the AOP area investigated this integration during 2015-2023. For this purpose, a sample of publications was treated by applying the Systematic Review (SR) methodology. This resulted in an extract of 83 studies that adopted life-cycle logic to estimate environmental impacts and process costs or evaluated them as complementary to the technical dimension of each treatment technology. This analysis found that both dimensions can be used for selecting or sizing AOPs at the design scale. However, the appropriate choice of the impact categories for the environmental assessment and establishing a methodology for cost analysis can make the approach still more effective. In addition, a staggering number of processes would broaden the reality and applicability of the estimates, and adopting multicriteria analysis methodologies could address essential aspects of decision-making processes during the design of the arrangements. By meeting the original purposes, the study broadened the requirements for designing AOPs and disseminating their use in mitigating the discharge of CECs.

Exploring drying kinetics and fate of nutrients in thermal digestion of solid organic waste

Thermal digestion has emerged as a novel technique for the rapid treatment of solid organic waste (SOW). Dehydration mechanism and fate of nutrients during the thermal digestion of the SOW were explored. A series of experiments were carried out in a specially designed laboratory-scale dehydrator to determine its drying kinetics. The statistical analysis revealed that the diffusion model predicted the dehydration profile most accurately than other models. The effective moisture diffusivity coefficient depended on the temperature and varied from 2.81 × 10^-08 m²/s to 8.68 × 10^-08 m²/s at the tested temperature range. The activation energy required for complete dehydration was found to be 26.56 kJ/mol. The artificial neural network (ANN) model was found highly efficient (R² - 0.983) in predicting the total drying time required for attaining equilibrium moisture content. The total N decreased from 2.2% to 1.81% due to evaporation of ammonical nitrogen, while the availability of P and K was increased from 0.38% to 0.43% and 1.47% to 1.75%, respectively when the temperature was increased from 110 °C to 170 °C. The thermal dehydration technique was found effective in digesting the organics and improving the bioavailability of the nutrients, which favours for its re-utilization in agriculture.

A decision-making framework for the optimal design of renewable energy systems under energy-water-land nexus considerations

The optimal allocation of land for energy generation is of emergent concern due to an increasing demand for renewable power capacity, land scarcity, and the diminishing supply of water. Therefore, economically, socially and environmentally optimal design of new energy infrastructure systems require the holistic consideration of water, food and land resources. Despite huge efforts on the modeling and optimization of renewable energy systems, studies navigating the multi-faceted and interconnected food-energy-water-land nexus space, identifying opportunities for beneficial improvement, and systematically exploring interactions and trade-offs are still limited. In this work we present the foundations of a systems engineering decision-making framework for the trade-off analysis and optimization of water and land stressed renewable energy systems. The developed framework combines mathematical modeling, optimization, and data analytics to capture the interdependencies of the nexus elements and therefore facilitate informed decision making. The proposed framework has been adopted for a water-stressed region in south-central Texas. The optimal solutions of this case study highlight the significance of geographic factors and resource availability on the transition towards renewable energy generation.

Biofuel supply chain management in the circular economy transition: An inclusive knowledge map of the field

Investment in biofuels, as sustainable alternatives for fossil fuels, has gained momentum over the last decade due to the global environmental and health concerns regarding fossil fuel consumption. Hence, effective management of biofuel supply chain (BSC) components, including biomass feedstock production, biomass logistics, biofuel production in biorefineries, and biofuel distribution to consumers, is crucial in transitioning towards a low-carbon and circular economy (CE). The present study aims to render an inclusive knowledge map of the BSC-related scientific production. In this vein, a systematic review, supported by a keywords co-occurrence analysis and qualitative content analysis, was carried out on a total of 1,975 peer-reviewed journal articles in the target literature. The analysis revealed four major research hotspots in the BSC literature, namely (1) biomass-to-biofuel supply chain design and planning, (2) environmental impacts of biofuel production, (3) biomass to bioenergy, and (4) techno-economic analysis of biofuel production. Besides, the findings showed that the following subject areas of research in the BSC research community have recently attracted more attention: (i) global warming and climate change mitigation, (ii) development of the third-generation biofuels produced from algal biomass, which has recently gained momentum in the CE debate, and (iii) government incentives, pricing, and subsidizing policies. The provided insights shed light on the understanding of researchers, stakeholders, and policy-makers involved in the sustainable energy sector by outlining the main research backgrounds, developments, and tendencies within the BSC arena. Looking at the provided knowledge map, potential research directions in BSCs towards implementing the CE model, including (i) integrative policy convergence at macro, meso, and micro levels, and (ii) industrializing algae-based biofuel production towards the CE transition, were proposed.

The Effects of Subsidies on MSW Treatment Companies: Financial Performance and Policy Implications

Companies that provide public services usually receive subsidies from municipalities as compensation for replacing the latter in their functions as public service providers. However, the managers of those companies are not always interested in maintaining an economically sustainable company, as this implies turning off the tap on exploration subsidies. This article investigates the effect of subsidies on the financial performance of municipal solid waste collection and treatment companies for 2016–2020 and across NUTS II regions. The accounting data of 680 companies retrieved from the SABI database, make it possible to assess the economic sustainability of the companies through financial ratios and operational data. The results show that the financial structure and management of companies in the Centro, Lisbon, and the Azores allowed to take advantage of exploration subsidies to achieve economic sustainability. In the remaining regions these subsidies proved to be ineffective. These results have implications for managers and policy makers insofar as it sheds a light on the conditions under which subsidies contribute to the economical sustainability of companies in the sector.

Assessing the Impact of COVID-19 on Sustainable Food Supply Chains

Recently, it has become an important issue to ensure sustainability, especially in food supply chains, against the rapidly growing population, increasing demand, and sudden disruptions caused by uncertain times such as that caused by COVID-19. Since food supply chains has vulnerable products and processes, it is critical to understand the sustainability factors of food supply chains especially in uncertain times such during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to determine sustainability factors of food supply chains. An Interpretive Structural Modelling method is used to state the relations between sustainability factors of food supply chains. As a result of the study, Information Sharing and Managerial Approaches are classified as driving factors; Food Safety and Security, Know-How Transfer, Logistics Networking, Risk Mitigation, Employee Commitment, Innovation, Traceability and Responsiveness are categorized as linkage factors. This article will be beneficial for managers in helping them develop sustainable food supply chains during uncertain times by focusing on traceability, information sharing, know-how transfer, food safety and security.
