Dredging and deposition of metal sulfide rich river sediments results in rapid conversion to acid sulfate soil materials

Critical metal geochemistry in groundwaters influenced by dredged material

This study investigated critical metal (CM) geochemistry including rare earth elements (REEs), Co, Ni, and Mn in groundwaters below and surrounding two dredged material placement facilities (DMPFs). Metal concentrations are elevated at both sites, spanning several orders of magnitude. The highest CM concentrations measured exceed many environments considered as aqueous resources (Co and Ni > 1 mg L^-1, REEs > 3 mg L^-1). Correlations between sulfur and iron, major cations, and CMs indicate that oxidation of sulfides present in the DM releases metals both directly from sulfide minerals and indirectly through acid dissolution of and/or desorption from additional minerals. REE fractionation patterns indicate that their mobility in the groundwaters may be influenced by interactions with silicate, carbonate, and phosphate minerals. Significant positive Gd and Eu anomalies were observed, which may be attributed to increased mobility of Eu²⁺ and anthropogenic Gd. Nanogeochemical analysis of filtered samples revealed several REE-bearing nanoparticulate (diameter < 100 nm) species, some of which co-occurred with aluminum, suggesting an (oxy)hydroxide or a clay mineral component. Further characterization of soluble and nano scale geochemical speciation is needed to fully assess the viability of CM recovery from DM-associated groundwater. CM recovery from DM-associated waters can provide a beneficial use, both offsetting costs associated with disposal, and supplementing domestic CM resources.

Eurypsychrophilic acidophiles: From (meta)genomes to low-temperature biotechnologies

Low temperature and acidic environments encompass natural milieus such as acid rock drainage in Antarctica and anthropogenic sites including drained sulfidic sediments in Scandinavia. The microorganisms inhabiting these environments include polyextremophiles that are both extreme acidophiles (defined as having an optimum growth pH &lt; 3), and eurypsychrophiles that grow at low temperatures down to approximately 4°C but have an optimum temperature for growth above 15°C. Eurypsychrophilic acidophiles have important roles in natural biogeochemical cycling on earth and potentially on other planetary bodies and moons along with biotechnological applications in, for instance, low-temperature metal dissolution from metal sulfides. Five low-temperature acidophiles are characterized, namely, Acidithiobacillus ferriphilus, Acidithiobacillus ferrivorans, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, “Ferrovum myxofaciens,” and Alicyclobacillus disulfidooxidans, and their characteristics are reviewed. Our understanding of characterized and environmental eurypsychrophilic acidophiles has been accelerated by the application of “omics” techniques that have aided in revealing adaptations to low pH and temperature that can be synergistic, while other adaptations are potentially antagonistic. The lack of known acidophiles that exclusively grow below 15°C may be due to the antagonistic nature of adaptations in this polyextremophile. In conclusion, this review summarizes the knowledge of eurypsychrophilic acidophiles and places the information in evolutionary, environmental, biotechnological, and exobiology perspectives.

Applying fulvic acid for sediment metals remediation: Mechanism, factors, and prospect

Fulvic acid (FA) has been shown to play a decisive role in controlling the environmental geochemical behavior of metals. As a green and natural microbial metabolite, FA is widely used in environmental remediation because of its good adsorption complexation and redox ability. This paper introduces the reaction mechanism and properties of FA with metals, and reviews the progress of research on the remediation of metal pollutant by FA through physicochemical remediation and bioremediation. FA can control the biotoxicity and migration ability of some metals, such as Pb, Cr, Hg, Cd, and As, through adsorption complexation and redox reactions. The concentration, molecular weight, and source are the main factors that determine the remediation ability of FA. In addition, the ambient pH, temperature, metal ion concentrations, and competing components in sediment environments have significant effects on the extent and rate of a reaction between metals and FA during the remediation process. Finally, we summarize the challenges that this promising environmental remediation tool may face. The research directions of FA in the field of metals ecological remediation are also prospected. This review can provide new ideas and directions for the research of remediation of metals contaminants in sediments.
