Co-incorporation of Chinese milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus L.), rice straw, and biochar strengthens the mitigation of Cd uptake by rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Soil Cd bioavailability response characteristics to microbes in paddy fields with co-incorporation of milk vetch, rice straw and amendments

Excessive heavy metals in soils can threaten food security and soil health. New practical technology is urgently needed to remediate cadmium (Cd) contaminated paddies in many parts of the world. Chinese milk vetch (M), rice straw (R), and soil amendments can reduce Cd activity in soil; however, the mechanism underlying this reduction is not well understood. This study explored the impact of co-incorporation of milk vetch, rice straw, and either lime (L), sesbania biochar (B), or sepiolite on soil Cd bioavailability through field experiments. The results indicated that the rice grain Cd concentrations in soil treated with milk vetch + rice straw + fertilizer (MRF, 16.6 %), milk vetch + rice straw + fertilizer + sesbania biochar (MRFB, 50.1 %), and milk vetch + rice straw + fertilizer + lime (MRFL, 48.3 %) were significantly lower than those in soil treated with fertilizer (F). The acid-soluble Cd concentrations influenced rice grain Cd uptake and were 33.9 % and 47.5 % lower for the MRFB and MRFL treatments, respectively, than for F alone. A decrease in acid-soluble Cd (AciCd) was accompanied by a decrease in Eh and increases in pH, Fe2+, cation exchange capacity, and dissolved organic carbon. The MRFB treatment promoted iron plaque (IP) formation on the rice root surface. The relative abundances of Desulfobacterota and Verrucomicrobiota were higher for the MRFB treatment than for the other treatments. A partial least squares path model confirmed that Aci-Cd and low-crystalline IP (IP-Feh) influenced the rice grain Cd concentration.

Green manuring reduces cadmium accumulation in rice: Roles of iron plaque and dissolved organic matter

In southern China, winter green manure is widely used in rice cropping systems for improving grain yields and soil fertility. Cd pollution has recently been reported in some of these paddy fields. Research on the in-depth understanding of how green manuring affects Cd absorption in rice is limited. This study aimed to investigate the impacts of different green manures, including single plantation and mixed plantation on the absorption of Cd by rice and explore the underlying mechanisms. Pot experiments demonstrated that compared with winter fallow-rice, green manuring treatments considerably decreased rice Cd content, promoted the conversion of bioavailable Cd fraction into a more stable form, induced the formation of iron plaque, and increased the content of humic-like fraction (HF) in soil dissolved organic matter (DOM). Treatment with mixed plantation resulted in a greater decrease in rice Cd content and an increase in HF and iron plaque contents than single plantation. Hydroponic experiments confirmed that both iron plaque and green manure-derived DOM significantly reduced the Cd content in rice seedlings. In conclusion, green manure incorporation is an efficient measure for the safe utilization of Cd-contaminated soil, and mixed plantation of different green manures exerts stronger effects.

Biochar co-pyrolyzed from peanut shells and maize straw improved soil biochemical properties, rice yield, and reduced cadmium mobilization and accumulation by rice: Biogeochemical investigations

Biochar is an eco-friendly amendment for the remediation of soils contaminated with cadmium (Cd). However, little attention has been paid to the influence and underlying mechanisms of the co-pyrolyzed biochar on the bioavailability and uptake of Cd in paddy soils. The current study explored the effects of biochar co-pyrolyzed from peanut shells (P) and maize straw (M) at different mixing ratios (1:0, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 0:1, 2:1 and 3:1, w/w), on the bacterial community and Cd fractionation in paddy soil, and its uptake by rice plant. Biochar addition, particularly P1M3 (P/M 1:3), significantly elevated soil pH and cation exchange capacity, transferred the mobile Cd to the residual fraction, and reduced Cd availability in the rhizosphere soil. P1M3 application decreased the concentration of Cd in different rice tissues (root, stem, leaf, and grain) by 30.0%- 49.4%, compared to the control. Also, P1M3 enhanced the microbial diversity indices and relative abundance of iron-oxidizing bacteria in the rhizosphere soil. Moreover, P1M3 was more effective in promoting the formation of iron plaque, increasing the Cd sequestration by iron plaque than other treatments. Consequently, the highest yield and lowest Cd accumulation in rice were observed following P1M3 application. This study revealed the feasibility of applying P1M3 for facilitating paddy soils contaminated with Cd.

Quantification of the effect of biochar application on heavy metals in paddy systems: Impact, mechanisms and future prospects

Biochar (BC) has shown great potential in remediating heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) contamination in paddy fields. Variation in feedstock sources, pyrolysis temperatures, modification methods, and application rates of BC can result in great changes in its effects on HM bioavailability and bioaccumulation in soil-rice systems and remediation mechanisms. Meanwhile, there is a lack of application guidelines for BC with specific properties and application rates when targeting rice fields contaminated with certain HMs. To elucidate this topic, this review focuses on i) the effects of feedstock type, pyrolysis temperature, and modification method on the properties of BC; ii) the changes in bioavailability and bioaccumulation of HMs in soil-rice systems applying BC with different feedstocks, pyrolysis temperatures, modification methods, and application rates; and iii) exploration of potential remediation mechanisms for applying BC to reduce the mobility and bioaccumulation of HMs in rice field systems. In general, the application of Fe/Mn modified organic waste (OW) derived BC for mid-temperature pyrolysis is still a well-optimized choice for the remediation of HM contamination in rice fields. From the viewpoint of remediation efficiency, the application rate of BC should be appropriately increased to immobilize Cd, Pb, and Cu in rice paddies, while the application rate of BC for immobilizing As should be <2.0 % (w/w). The mechanism of remediation of HM-contaminated rice fields by applying BC is mainly the direct adsorption of HMs by BC in soil pore water and the mediation of soil microenvironmental changes. In addition, the application of Fe/Mn modified BC induced the formation of iron plaque (IP) on the root surface of rice, which reduced the uptake of HM by the plant. Finally, this paper describes the prospects and challenges for the extension of various BCs for the remediation of HM contamination in paddy fields and makes some suggestions for future development.

Risk assessment of toxic and hazardous metals in paddy agroecosystem by biochar-for bio-membrane applications

Toxic and carcinogenic metal (loid)s, such arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd), found in contaminated paddy soils pose a serious danger to environmental sustainability. Their geochemical activities are complex, making it difficult to manage their contamination. Rice grown in Cd and As-polluted soils ends up in people's bellies, where it can cause cancer, anemia, and the deadly itai sickness. Solving this issue calls for research into eco-friendly and cost-effective remediation technology to lower rice's As and Cd levels. This research delves deeply into the origins of As and Cd in paddy soils, as well as their mobility, bioavailability, and uptake mechanisms by rice plants. It also examines the current methods and reactors used to lower As and Cd contamination in rice. Iron-modified biochar (Fe-BC) is a promising technology for reducing As and Cd toxicity in rice, improving soil health, and boosting rice's nutritional value. Biochar's physiochemical characteristics are enhanced by the addition of iron, making it a potent adsorbent for As and Cd ions. In conclusion, Fe-BC's biomembrane properties make them an attractive option for remediating As- and Cd-contaminated paddy soils. More efficient mitigation measures, including the use of biomembrane technology, can be developed when sustainable agriculture practices are combined with these technologies.

Phytoavailability of cadmium in rice amended with organic materials and lime: Effects of rhizosphere chemical changes and cadmium sequestration in iron plaque

Excessive Cd in rice grains produced with acidic paddy soil is receiving increasingly widespread attention because it endangers human health. Applying organic materials (OM) and lime (L) is a common technique used to reduce Cd concentration in grains (CdG). Nevertheless, the mechanism by which their simultaneous application affects the Cd phytoavailability in soilrice systems remains ambiguous. In the current study, we adopted a rhizobag pot culture test to explore the influences of single application of OM [rice straw (RS), milk vetch (MV)], L, and their co-utilization on Cd phytoavailability and the associated mechanisms. The results showed that the application of RS, MV, L, L + RS (LRS), and L + MV (LMV) significantly decreased CdG by 26.9%, 38.2%, 48.6%, 50.0%, and 53.0%, respectively. Fe plaque (IP) formation was not affected by these treatments; however, Cd sequestration in IP (CdIP) was significantly reduced. CdIP was significantly reduced by 18.3%, 23.6%, 43.8%, 33.1%, and 41.4%, after RS, MV, L, LRS, and LMV treatments, respectively. Additionally, available Cd concentrations in rhizospheric soil (RHS) were significantly reduced by 11.5%, 14.8%, 15.1%, and 18.4%, after MV, L, LRS, and LMV treatments, respectively. Cd availability in RHS was significantly influenced by pH, dissolved organic carbon concentration, and Zn, Fe, and Mn availability. The results of the structure equation mode showed that CdG was mainly affected by CdIP, followed by Cd availability and the pH of RHS. In conclusion, the reduction of CdG by OM, L, and their co-utilization was the results of their combined effects of reducing Cd availability in RHS, CdIP, and Cd uptake by the roots. This study emphasizes that the reduction of CdG is a result of the dual effects of reducing Cd availability in RHS and CdIP after amendments application. L application alone or in conjunction with OM is an efficient practice to reduce CdG in acidic Cd-contaminated paddy fields.
