Hidden risks from potentially toxic metal(loid)s in paddy soils-rice and source apportionment using lead isotopes: A case study from China

Pb isotopic fingerprinting of uranium pollution: New insight on uranium transport in stream-river sediments

Uranium mill tailings (UMT) present a significant environmental concern due to high levels of radioactive and toxic elements, including uranium (U), thorium (Th), and lead (Pb), which can pose serious health risks to aquatic ecosystems. While Pb isotopic tracers have been widely utilized in environmental studies to identify elemental sources and geological processes, their application in U geochemistry remains relatively limited. In this study, we investigate the distribution and migration of U in stream-river sediments surrounding a decommissioned U hydrometallurgical area, employing Pb isotopes as tracers. Our findings reveal significant enrichment and ecological risk of U, Pb, and Th in the sediments. Uranium predominantly associates with quartz and silicate minerals, and its dispersion process is influenced by continuous leaching and precipitation cycles of typical U-bearing minerals. Furthermore, we establish a compelling positive relationship (r2 = 0.97) between 208Pb/207Pb and 206Pb/207Pb in the stream-river sediments and sediment derived from UMT. Application of a binary Pb mixing model indicates that anthropogenic hydrometallurgical activities contribute to 2.5-62.7% of the stream-river sediments. Notably, these values are lower than the 6.6-89.6% recorded about 10 years ago, prior to the decommissioning of the U hydrometallurgical activity. Our results underscore the continued risk of U pollution dispersion even after decommission, highlighting the long-term environmental impact of UMT.

Effects of remediation agents on rice and soil in toxic metal(loid)s contaminated paddy fields: A global meta-analysis

Toxic metal(loid)s contamination of paddy soil is a nonnegligible issue and threatens food safety considering that it is transmitted via the soil-plant system. Applying remediation agents could effectively inhibit the soil available toxic metal(loid)s and reduce their accumulation in rice. To comprehensively quantify how remediation agents impact the accumulation of Cd/Pb/As in rice, rice growth and yield, the accumulation of available Cd/Pb/As in paddy soil, and soil characteristics, 50 peer-reviewed publications were selected for meta-analysis. Overall, the application of remediation agents exhibited significant positive effects on rice plant length (ES = 0.05, CI = 0.01-0.08), yield (ES = 0.20, CI = 0.13-0.27), peroxidase (ES = 0.56, CI = 0.18-0.31), photosynthetic rate (ES = 0.47, CI = 0.34-0.61), and respiration rate (ES = 0.68, CI = 0.47-0.88). Among the different types of remediation agents, biochar was the most effective in controlling the accumulation of Cd/Pb/As in all portions of rice, and was also superior in inhibiting the accumulation of Pb in rice grains (ES = -0.59, 95 % CI = -1.04-0.13). This study offers an essential contribution for the remediation strategies of toxic metal(loid)s contaminated paddy fields.

Respective evolution of soil and biochar on competitive adsorption mechanisms for Cd(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) after 2-year natural ageing

To reveal the respective evolution of soil and biochar on competitive heavy metal adsorption mechanisms after natural ageing, three soils and two biochars were tested in this study. The soil-biochar interlayer samples were buried in the field for 0.5, 1, and 2 years, for which competitive adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of soils and biochars in four systems (Cd, Cd+Ni, Cd+Cu, and Cd+Ni+Cu) were investigated. Results showed that physicochemical properties, adsorption capacity and mechanisms of soils and biochars all changed the most in the first 0.5 years. The properties and adsorption capacity of biochars gradually weakened with the ageing time, meanwhile, those of soils gradually enhanced. After co-ageing with acidic soil for 0.5 years, the Cd(II) adsorption capacity of modified biochar decreased by 86.59% in the ternary system; meanwhile, that of acidic soil increased by 65.52%. The contributions of mineral mechanisms decreased significantly, while non-mineral mechanisms were slightly affected by ageing. This study highlighted that when using biochar to remediate heavy metal-contaminated soils, biochar should be applied at least half a year in advance before planting crops so that biochar can fully contact and react with the soil.

Risk assessment and strontium isotopic tracing of potentially toxic metals in creek sediments around a uranium mine, China

The contamination of creek sediments near industrially nuclear dominated site presents significant environmental challenges, particularly in identifying and quantifying potentially toxic metal (loid)s (PTMs). This study aims to measure the extent of contamination and apportion related sources for nine PTMs in alpine creek sediments near a typical uranium tailing dam from China, including strontium (Sr), rubidium (Rb), manganese (Mn), lithium (Li), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), vanadium (V), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), using multivariate statistical approach and Sr isotopic compositions. The results show varying degrees of contamination in the sediments for some PTMs, i.e., Sr (16.1-39.6 mg/kg), Rb (171-675 mg/kg), Mn (224-2520 mg/kg), Li (11.6-78.8 mg/kg), Cd (0.31-1.38 mg/kg), and Zn (37.1-176 mg/kg). Multivariate statistical analyses indicate that Sr, Rb, Li, and Mn originated from the uranium tailing dam, while Cd and Zn were associated with abandoned agricultural activities, and Ni, Cu, and V were primarily linked to natural bedrock weathering. The Sr isotope fingerprint technique further suggests that 48.22-73.84% of Sr and associated PTMs in the sediments potentially derived from the uranium tailing dam. The combined use of multivariate statistical analysis and Sr isotopic fingerprint technique in alpine creek sediments enables more reliable insights into PTMs-induced pollution scenarios. The findings also offer unique perspectives for understanding and managing aqueous environments impacted by nuclear activities.

Distribution and migration of uranium, chromium, and accompanying metal(loid)s in soil-plants system around a uranium hydrometallurgical area

The extraction and utilization of uranium (U) ores have led to the release of significant amounts of potentially toxic metal(loid)s (PTMs) into the environment, constituting a grave threat to the ecosystem. However, research on the distribution and migration mechanism of U, chromium (Cr), and their accompanying PTMs in soil-plant system around U hydrometallurgical area remains insufficient and poorly understood. Herein, the distribution, migration, and risk level of PTMs were evaluated in soil and plant samples around U hydrometallurgical area, Northern Guangdong, China. The results demonstrated that the maximum content of U and Cr found in the analyzed soils were up to 84.2 and 238.9 mg/kg, respectively. These values far exceed the soil background values in China and other countries. The highest content of U (53.6 mg/kg) was detected in Colocasia antiquorum Schott, and the highest content of Cr (349.5 mg/kg) was observed in Pteridium aquilinum, both of which were enriched in their roots. The risk assessment of PTMs demonstrated that the study area suffered from severe pollution (PN > 3), especially from U, Cr, Th, and As, suggesting the non-negligible anthropogenic impacts. Hence, in light of the significant ecological hazard posed by the U hydrometallurgical area, it is imperative to implement appropriate restoration measures to ensure the human health and maintain the stability of the ecosystem.

Uncovering the impact of mega-scale shipbreaking yards on soil and crop quality in Bangladesh: A spatiotemporal dynamics and associated health risks of metal/loid contamination

The uncontrolled release of harmful metal/loids from mega-scale shipbreaking activities in Bangladesh is a significant concern. This study investigated the impact of shipbreaking activities on soil and crop quality and human health in relation to metal/loid contamination. This work covered an area of 1221 km2 surrounding the shipbreaking yards in Chittagong during the wet and dry seasons between 2019 and 2020. Amongst the sixteen elements measured, the concentrations of Pb, Cd, As, V, Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Sn in the soil, rice, and vegetables from the four exposure sites were significantly higher compared to the control site in both seasons. Soil pollution indices indicated moderate to higher contamination levels of Pb, Zn, Cd, As, and Se in 30-50% of soil, supporting their accumulation in food crops. Source apportionment analysis identified uncontrolled shipwrecking operations as the primary anthropogenic activity mainly contributing to metal/loid pollution. Health risk analysis showed inorganic arsenic (estimated), Cd, and Pb in food crops could pose potential health threats to the general population. Spinach leaf and gourd were identified as the highest-risk contributing vegetables in the dry and wet seasons. These findings help to inform management strategies to protect agroecosystems and public health.

Chemical evolution of rainfall in China's first eco-civilization demonstration city: Implication for the provenance identification of pollutants and rainwater acid neutralization

Rainfall chemistry is a vital indicator for reflecting anthropogenic/natural input on atmospheric quality, and the rainfall process is also the main sink of air contaminants, which has received widely concerns by all walks of life. However, the chemical compositions, sources of major solutes, historical evolution, and their determinants of rainwater in Chinese urban area, which is hotspot of atmospheric pollutant emission, are unclear under the dual background of fast economic development and eco-civilization construction. To decipher these issues, the latest year data of observation-based rainwater chemistry and the historical rainwater data, and air pollution data of China's first eco-civilization demonstration city were integrated and studied. The results presented that SO42- (53.4 %) and NO3- (28.8 %), Ca2+ (46.5 %) and NH4+ (37.9 %) dominated the present rainwater anions and cations. The historical changes in the relative proportion of rainwater ions (e.g., the holistic decreasing trend of SO42-) revealed the reduction and management achievement of atmospheric pollutant emission driven by different stages of eco-civilization city construction. The atmospheric components were well removed by rainfall scouring and all the rainwater ions showed obvious temporal variations. The concentrations of most of ions were higher in winter but lower in summer due to the key factors of meteorological factor (mainly rainfall amount) and the seasonal variations of source contribution. The stoichiometry-based source identification and relative contribution calculation reflected that anthropogenic input was the most primary contributor of NO3- (99.4 %) and SO42- (95.4 %), and the contribution of fixed emission source was relatively higher than that of traffic sources. The NH4+ was defined as the anthropogenic input ion (urban wastes and fuel combustion), while all Cl- and Na+ were from oceanic input. In contrast, terrigenous input represented the most important origin of Ca2+, K+, and Mg2+, with relative contribution of 99.5 %, 97.0 %, and 90.7 %, respectively. The high neutralization factor (NF, about 2.0) values and neutralizing to acidifying potential (NP/AP, about 1.7) ratios and their increasing trend in past few decades revealed the fact of rainwater acid being highly neutralized under the background of eco-civilization city construction.

Field application of hydroxyapatite and humic acid for remediation of metal-contaminated alkaline soil

The quality of soil is essential for ensuring the safety and quality of agricultural products. However, soils contaminated with toxic metals pose a significant threat to agricultural production and human health. Therefore, remediation of contaminated soils is an urgent task, and humic acid (HA) with hydroxyapatite (HAP) materials was applied for this study in contaminated alkaline soils to remediate Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn. Physiochemical properties, improved BCR sequential extraction, microbial community composition in soils with superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and chlorophyll content in plants were determined. Among the studied treatments, application of HAP-HA (2:1) (T7) had the most significant impact on reducing the active forms of toxic metals from soil such as Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn decreased by 18.59%, 9.12%, 11.83%, and 3.33%, respectively, but HAP and HA had a minor impact on metal accumulation in Juncao. HAP (T2) had a beneficial impact on reducing the TCleaf/root of Cd, Cu, and Zn, whereas HAP-HA (T5) showed the best performance for reducing Cd and Cu in EFleaf/soil. HAP-HA (T5 and T7) showed higher biomass (57.3%) and chlorophyll (17.9%), whereas HAP (T4) showed better performance in POD (25.8%) than T0 in Juncao. The bacterial diversity in soil was increased after applying amendments of various treatments and enhancing metal remediation. The combined application of HAP and HA effectively reduced active toxic metals in alkaline soil. HAP-HA mixtures notably improved soil health, plant growth, and microbial diversity, advocating for their use in remediating contaminated soils.

Thallium uptake and risk in vegetables grown in pyrite past-mining contaminated soil amended with organic fertilizer (compost): A potential method for Tl contamination remediation

Thallium (Tl) is a highly toxic trace metal that can cause severe pollution and damage to the ecological system. In this study, a field trial was conducted in a Tl-rich pyrite-barite past-mining area to unveil the fate of Tl in agricultural practice. Tuscany kale and red chicory cultivated in soil impacted by the dismissed mine of Valdicastello Carducci (Northern Tuscany, Italy) displayed significantly different uptake behaviors of Tl. Hyper-accumulation of Tl was observed in kale leaves and its content reached up to 17.1 mg kg-1 whereas only <0.70 mg kg-1 of Tl was found in leaves of red chicory. Due to the regionally polymetallic pollution, Tuscany kale grown in this area possessed a great Tl intake risk for the residents. As for the fertilization treatment, Tl in Tuscany kale leaves fertilized with mineral fertilizer (NPK) and compost were 21.4 and 12.8 mg kg-1. The results suggested a potential remediation ability of compost in diminishing Tl in the vegetable leaves and thus may reduce its risk in the soil-crop system. Since Tl poisoning emergency may occur in agricultural fields near past-mining zones, it is critical to establish possible remediation measures to ensure food safety surrounding former mining areas likewise.

Correlation of Elemental Transfer, Bioactive Compounds and Antioxidant Activity on Lactuca sativa L. Grown in Soil with Functionalized CNT and HMs

While heavy metals (HM) have been considered in recent decades to be the most common and problematic pollutants, the expansion of the list of pollutants due to the active use of carbon nanotubes (CNT) raises new questions about the benefit and harm of HM released to nature individually or fixed on CNT walls. A pot experiment was conducted to compare the effect of two classes of potential pollutants-metal salts of Pb, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Ni; and functionalized CNTs with COOH, MnO2, Fe3O4, and MnO2-Fe3O4-applied in soil, on the elemental transfer, the bioactive compounds accumulation, and the antioxidant activity in lettuce. While CNTs mainly increased the elemental transfer from soil to leaves, HM salts strongly obstructed it. In the presence of CNTs, the antioxidant activity in lettuce leaves correlated with the transfer of elements from soil to root and from root to leaves. The excess of HMs in soil induced a greater variation of the polyphenols quantity and antioxidant activity than the excess of CNTs. It might be assumed that lettuce perceived HMs as a more aggressive stressor than CNTs and more strongly activated the defense mechanism, showing the reduction of the element transfer and enhancing of total polyphenol production and antioxidant activity.

Coupling isotopic signatures and partial extraction method to examine lead pollution in mangrove sediments

Elevated lead (Pb) has been widely observed in mangrove sediments due to human activities, yet understanding the sources of Pb in these sediments and the factors influencing Pb accumulation is challenging. Here, we combined Pb isotopes with partial extraction methods to study Pb contamination levels in mangrove sediments from the eastern and western parts of the Maowei Sea, China. Our results showed that the Pb in the leachate and residual fraction was mainly from anthropogenic and natural sources, respectively. The use of 204Pb isotope analysis can reveal some overlooked differences between anthropogenic and natural sources. Calculation by Bayesian mixing model showed no significant difference in the total anthropogenic contribution between the two sites, but the relative contribution of each end member differed. The contribution of Pb/Zn ores was much higher in the eastern sites (30.9 ± 5.1%) than in the west (18.4 ± 5.5%), while that of agricultural activities was much lower in the east (5.2 ± 3.1%) than in the west (13.5 ± 4.6%). The elevated anthropogenic Pb accumulation in mangrove sediments was ascribed to organic matter. This study provides more data on Pb isotopic composition and new insights into Pb biogeochemistry in the mangrove environment.

A novel application of thallium isotopes in tracing metal(loid)s migration and related sources in contaminated paddy soils

Thallium (Tl) is a highly toxic heavy metal, which is harmful to plants and animals even in trace amounts. Migration behaviors of Tl in paddy soils system remain largely unknown. Herein, Tl isotopic compositions have been employed for the first time to explore Tl transfer and pathway in paddy soil system. The results showed considerably large Tl isotopic variations (ε²⁰⁵Tl = -0.99 ± 0.45 ~ 24.57 ± 0.27), which may result from interconversion between Tl(I) and Tl(III) under alternative redox conditions in the paddy system. Overall higher ε²⁰⁵Tl values of paddy soils in the deeper layers were probably attributed to abundant presence of Fe/Mn (hydr)oxides and occasionally extreme redox conditions during alternative dry-wet process which oxidized Tl(I) to Tl(III). A ternary mixing model using Tl isotopic compositions further disclosed that industrial waste contributed predominantly to Tl contamination in the studied soil, with an average contribution rate of 73.23%. All these findings indicate that Tl isotopes can be used as an efficient tracer for fingerprinting Tl pathway in complicated scenarios even under varied redox conditions, providing significant prospect in diverse environmental applications.

Zn isotope signatures in soil FeMn nodules with karst high geochemical background

Zn isotope has the potential to be used as an environmental tracer, due to its role in fingerprinting specific sources and processes. However, few studies have focused on Zn isotope system in terrestrial ferromanganese (FeMn) nodules, which is important on understanding the behaviors of Zn in soils. In this study, we analyse the isotopic composition in soil FeMn nodules and surrounding materials from a typical karst region in Guangxi Province, southwestern China and use advanced synchrotron-based methods to characterize Zn speciation. The Zn isotope compositions of the FeMn nodules range from 0.09 to 0.66 ‰, with an average value of 0.24 ‰. Pb isotope fingerprinting reveals that the major material sources contributing to the FeMn nodules are the surrounding soil (δ⁶⁶Zn: ~0.36 ‰) and partly weathered carbonate bedrock (δ⁶⁶Zn: ~0.58 ‰), which contain heavier Zn isotopes than the nodules. Synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence (μ-SXRF) shows that Zn is well correlated with both Fe and Mn. X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) measurements reveal that Zn is associated with both goethite and birnessite phases, with goethite-sorbed Zn accounting for ~76 % of the total Zn and birnessite-sorbed Zn accounting for ~24 %. By combining these new results, the isotopically light Zn in the FeMn nodules compared to their sources can be explained by equilibrium sorption of Zn on goethite and birnessite, during which light Zn is preferentially sorbed. Our study provides important new data on Zn isotope compositions in terrestrial soil FeMn nodules and constrains associated mechanisms, and have implications for using Zn isotopes as environmental tracers.

Unraveling the role of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in a corn-soil system: Plant growth, oxidative stress and heavy metal(loid)s behavior

In the age of nanotechnological advancement, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are drawing global attention. However, few studies have been published on the crop growth responses to CNTs in heavy metal(loid)s contaminated environments. A pot experiment was conducted to assess the effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on plant development, oxidative stress, and heavy metal(loid)s behavior in a corn-soil system. Corn (Zea mays L.) seedlings were cultivated in soil containing Cadmium (Cd) and Arsenic (As) that had been primed with 0, 100, 500, and 1000 mg kg^-1 MWCNTs. The application of 100 and 500 mg kg^-1 MWCNTs improved shoot length by 6.45% and 9.21% after 45 days, respectively. Total plant dry biomass increased by 14.71% when treated with 500 mg kg^-1 MWCNTs but decreased by 9.26% when exposed to 1000 mg kg^-1 MWCNTs. MWCNTs treatment did not affect Cd accumulation in plants. On the other hand, the bio-concentration factor of As was inversely associated with plant growth (p < 0.05), which was declined in MWCNTs treatments. Oxidative stress was aggravated when plants were exposed to MWCNTs, thus activating the antioxidant enzymes system in the corn. In contrast, TCLP-extractable Cd and As in soil significantly decreased than in the control. Additionally, the soil nutrients were changed under MWCNTs treatments. Our findings also revealed that a particular concentration of MWCNTs can mitigate the toxicity of Cd and As in corn seedlings. Therefore, these results suggest the prospective application of CNTs in agricultural production, ensuring environmental and soil sustainability.

Geochemical fractionation, mobility of elements and environmental significance of surface sediments in a Tropical River, Borneo

Miri River is a tropical river in Borneo that drains on flat terrain and urbanised area and debauches into the South China Sea. This paper documents the environmental status of this river, and provides an insight into the provenance using bulk chemistry of the sediments, and brings out the geochemical mobility, bioavailability, and potential toxicity of some critical elements based on BCR sequential extraction. The sediments are intense to moderately weathered and recycled products of Neogene sedimentary rocks. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the river favoured an upstream section dominated by fine sand, while the downstream sediments are medium silt. Based on the bulk geochemistry, the Miri River sediments are moderate to considerably contaminated by Cu, Mo, and As in the upstream and by Sb, As and Cu in the downstream. The potential ecological risk values are low except Cu and a significant biological impact is expected in downstream due to Cu, As, Zn and Cr. The mobility, bioavailability and Risk Assessment Code values for Zn and Mn are higher and thus may pose moderate to very high risk to aquatic organisms. Though a high bulk concentration of Cu is observed, the association of Cu with the bioavailable fraction is low.

Thallium adsorption on three iron (hydr)oxides and Tl isotopic fractionation induced by adsorption on ferrihydrite

Thallium (Tl) is an extraordinarily toxic metal, which is usually present with Tl(I) and highly mobile in aquatic environment. Limited knowledge is available on the adsorption and isotopic variations of Tl(I) to Fe-(hydr)oxides. Herein, the adsorption behavior and mechanism of Tl(I) on representative Fe-(hydr)oxides, i.e. goethite, hematite, and ferrihydrite, were comparatively investigated kineticly and isothermally, additional to crystal structure modelling and Tl isotope composition (²⁰⁵Tl/²⁰³Tl). The results showed that ferrihydrite exhibited overall higher Tl(I) adsorption capacity (1.11-10.86 mg/kg) than goethite (0.21-1.83 mg/kg) and hematite (0.14-2.35 mg/kg), and adsorption by the three prevalent Fe-minerals presented strong pH and ionic strength dependence. The magnitude of Tl isotopic fractionation during Tl(I) adsorption to ferrihydrite (α_{solid-solution} ≈ 1.00022-1.00037) was smaller than previously observed fractionation between Mn oxides and aqueous Tl(I) (α_{solid-solution} ≈ 1.0002-1.0015). The notable difference is likely that whether oxidation of Tl(I) occurred during Tl adsorption to the mineral surfaces. This study found a small but detectable Tl isotopic fractionation during Tl(I) adsorption to ferrihydrite and heavier Tl isotope was slightly preferentially adsorbed on surface of ferrihydrite, which was attributed to the formation of inner-sphere complex between Tl and ≡Fe-OH. The findings offer a new understanding of the migration and fate of ²⁰⁵Tl/²⁰³Tl during Tl(I) adsorption to Fe (hydr)oxides.

Decreasing dissolved oxygen enhances in situ curtailment of intermediate Cr(VI) during photo-oxidative decomplexation of Cr(III)-EDTA

Cr(III)-organic complexes are stably presented in tanning, electroplating, and other industrial wastewaters, and their safe and efficient removal remains a current challenge. Available oxidation processes can remove Cr(III) complexes but readily result in highly toxic Cr(VI) accumulation. Herein, negligible Cr(VI) accumulation was achieved during photo-oxidation of Cr(III) complexes using a simple strategy of decreasing dissolved oxygen (DO). At the DO concentration of 5.0 mg·L^-1 or less, the in-process formation of intermediate Cr(VI) was totally abated by in situ formed reductive species, and total Cr was reduced from 9.0-11.0 mg·L^-1 to below 1.0 mg·L^-1. A complete curtailment of Cr(VI) was observed after 30-60 min at pH 6.0-9.0. Increasing Cr(III)-EDTA concentration and decreasing pH value facilitated the in situ reduction of intermediate Cr(VI). Based on the identification of intermediates and additional Cr(II) and quenching experiments, the possible key species involved in intermediate Cr(VI) reduction were the photogenerated Cr(II) and some C-centered radicals from Cr(III)-EDTA decomplexation, and the possible mechanisms of Cr(III)-EDTA decomplexation and intermediate Cr(VI) reduction were thus proposed. The process also showed efficient treatment on other Cr(III) complexes (citrate, oxalate, and tartrate) and realistic Cr(III) complexed wastewater. This study would provide an insignificant Cr(VI)-accumulated alternative for efficient and safe removal of Cr(III) complexes from contaminated water.

Cadmium aggravates the blood-brain barrier disruption via inhibition of the Wnt7A/β-catenin signaling axis

Cadmium (Cd) is a non-biodegradable widespread environmental pollutant, which can cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and cause cerebral toxicity. However, the effect of Cd on the BBB is still unclear. In this study, a total of 80 (1-day-old) Hy-Line white variety chicks (20 chickens/group) were selected and randomly divided into four (4) groups: the control group (Con group) (fed with a basic diet, n = 20), the Cd 35 group (basic diet with 35 mg/kg CdCl₂, n = 20), the Cd 70 group (basic diet with 70 mg/kg CdCl₂, n = 20) and the Cd 140 group (basic diet with 140 mg/kg CdCl₂, n = 20), and fed for 90 days. The pathological changes, factors associated with the BBB, oxidation level and the levels of Wingless-type MMTV integration site family, member 7 A (Wnt7A)/Wnt receptor Frizzled 4 (FZD4)/β-catenin signaling axis-related proteins in brain tissue were detected. Cd exposure induced capillary damage and neuronal swelling, degeneration and loss of neurons. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) showed the weakened Wnt/β-catenin signaling axis. The protein expression of the Wnt7A, FZD4, and β-catenin was decreased by Cd expusure. Inflammation generation and BBB dysfunction were induced by Cd, as manifested by impaired tight junctions (TJs) and adherens junctions (AJs) formation. These findings underscore that Cd induced BBB dysfunction via disturbing Wnt7A/FZD4/β-catenin signaling axis.

Stable thallium (Tl) isotopic signature as a reliable source tracer in river sediments impacted by mining activities

Thallium (Tl) is an extremely toxic metal, whose geochemical behavior remains poorly understood. This study aims to clarify the migration pathway and source apportionment of Tl in sediments from a watershed downstream of an open and large-scale pyrite mine area in south China, using high-precised Tl isotopic compositions. Results showed that Tl isotopic fractionations were mainly influenced by the anthropogenic Tl sources in all the sediments as a whole from the studied watershed, while in situ mineral adsorption and biological activity were limited. Moreover, plot of ε²⁰⁵Tl vs. 1/Tl further illustrated that three possible end-members, viz. background sediments, pyrite tailings, and sewage treatment wastes were ascribed to predominant sources of Tl enrichment in the sediments. A ternary mixing model unveiled that waste from pyrite mining activities (i.e., both pyrite tailings and sewage treatment wastes) affected the downstream sediments up to 10 km. All these findings suggest that Tl isotopic signature is a reliable tool to trace Tl sources in the sediments impacted by mining activities. It is highly critical for further target-oriented and precise remediation of Tl contamination.

A review of important heavy metals toxicity with special emphasis on nephrotoxicity and its management in cattle

Toxicity with heavy metals has proven to be a significant hazard with several health problems linked to it. Heavy metals bioaccumulate in living organisms, pollute the food chain, and possibly threaten the health of animals. Many industries, fertilizers, traffic, automobile, paint, groundwater, and animal feed are sources of contamination of heavy metals. Few metals, such as aluminum (Al), may be eliminated by the elimination processes, but other metals like lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Ca) accumulate in the body and food chain, leading to chronic toxicity in animals. Even if these metals have no biological purpose, their toxic effects are still present in some form that is damaging to the animal body and its appropriate functioning. Cadmium (Cd) and Pb have negative impacts on a number of physiological and biochemical processes when exposed to sub-lethal doses. The nephrotoxic effects of Pb, As, and Cd are well known, and high amounts of naturally occurring environmental metals as well as occupational populations with high exposures have an adverse relationship between kidney damage and toxic metal exposure. Metal toxicity is determined by the absorbed dosage, the route of exposure, and the duration of exposure, whether acute or chronic. This can lead to numerous disorders and can also result in excessive damage due to oxidative stress generated by free radical production. Heavy metals concentration can be decreased through various procedures including bioremediation, pyrolysis, phytoremediation, rhizofiltration, biochar, and thermal process. This review discusses few heavy metals, their toxicity mechanisms, and their health impacts on cattle with special emphasis on the kidneys.

Buffer zone-based trace elements indicating the impact of human activities on karst urban groundwater

The tanglesome allocation of landscape types at various spatial dimensions is an important component influencing the quality of groundwater environment in karst cities. Trace elements can be used as indicators of the extent of impact on groundwater which is an effective means of tracing groundwater contamination. In this study, we studied the influence of landscape patterns on trace elements in groundwater of typical karst cities in Southwest China (Guiyang City) on a multi-spatial scale by using multivariate statistical analysis. According to the sampling points, buffer zone scales with different radii (500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m, and 4000 m) were established to quantify the land use model. There are suburban and urban differences in trace element content. The city center has higher levels of trace elements compared to suburban areas, especially Li, Ni, Tl, Cu, Sr, Co, As, and Mn. In addition, the outcomes of the multiple linear regression had shown that the size effect of the association from landscape pattern to trace elements varies with different indicators and parameters. The results of redundancy analysis showed an overall change in trace elements was better interpreted by the landscape pattern of the 1500 m-scale buffer. At the same time, at the 1500 m scale, Ni, Tl, Cu, Co, As, Cr, Sr, Li, and Mn were positively correlated with the urban landscape index (4LPI, 4LSI), influenced by urban anthropogenic activities, while Cd, Zn, and Pb were positively correlated with the cropland landscape index (1AI, 1LPI), influenced by agricultural activities. This study indicates that trace elements are a reliable indicator for tracing groundwater contamination. The buffer zone can reflect the extent of urban impacts on groundwater and provide a new and effective analytical tool for groundwater management.

Simultaneous Heavy Metal-Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Removal by Native Tunisian Fungal Species

Multi-contamination by organic pollutants and toxic metals is common in anthropogenic and industrial environments. In this study, the five fungal strains Chaetomium jodhpurense (MH667651.1), Chaetomium maderasense (MH665977.1), Paraconiothyrium variabile (MH667653.1), Emmia lacerata, and Phoma betae (MH667655.1), previously isolated in Tunisia, were investigated for the simultaneous removal and detoxification of phenanthrene (PHE) and benzo[a]anthracene (BAA), as well as heavy metals (HMs) (Cu, Zn, Pb and Ag) in Kirk’s media. The removal was analysed using HPLC, ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled to a QToF mass spectrometer, transmission electron microscopy, and toxicology was assessed using phytotoxicity (Lepidium sativum seeds) and Microtox® (Allivibrio fisherii) assays. The PHE and BAA degradation rates, in free HMs cultures, reached 78.8% and 70.7%, respectively. However, the addition of HMs considerably affected the BAA degradation rate. The highest degradation rates were associated with the significant production of manganese-peroxidase, lignin peroxidase, and unspecific peroxygenase. The Zn and Cu removal efficacy was considerably higher with live cells than dead cells. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the involvement of both bioaccumulation and biosorption processes in fungal HM removal. The environmental toxicological assays proved that simultaneous PAH and HM removal was accompanied by detoxification. The metabolites produced during co-treatment were not toxic for plant tissues, and the acute toxicity was reduced. The obtained results indicate that the tested fungi can be applied in the remediation of sites simultaneously contaminated with PAHs and HMs.

Status, Sources and Assessment of Potentially Toxic Element (PTE) Contamination in Roadside Orchard Soils of Gaziantep (Türkiye)

To identify the sources of contamination with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in roadside orchard soils and to evaluate the potential ecological and environmental impacts in Gaziantep, soil samples from 20 mixed pistachio and olive orchards on roadsides with different traffic densities and at different distances to the roads were analyzed. Concentrations were 23,407.36 ± 4183.76 mg·kg^-1 for Fe, 421.78 ± 100.26 mg·kg^-1 for Mn, 100.20 ± 41.92 mg·kg^-1 for Ni, 73.30 ± 25.58 mg·kg^-1 for Cr, 65.03 ± 12.19 mg·kg^-1 for Zn, 60.38± 7.91 mg·kg^-1 for Pb, 17.74 ± 3.35 mg·kg^-1 for Cu, 14.93 ± 4.94 mg·kg^-1 for Co, and 0.30 ± 0.12 mg·kg^-1 for Cd. It was found that the Ni content in 51% and the Cr content in 18% of orchard soils were above the legal limits for agricultural soils (pH > 6) in Türkiye. Factor analysis (FA) showed that Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Pb loaded on the first factor (FC1), while Cd and Zn loaded mostly on the second factor (FC2). It was found that Cr, Ni, and Pb were primarily enriched through pedogenic processes, whereas Cd most likely originated from agricultural activities, while the impact of road traffic as source of PTE contamination was insignificant. It has been revealed that the soils are of low quality for agricultural production due to PTE contamination (PIave ≥ 1). The SOPI values from environmental and ecological individual indices showed that the soil pollution level was moderate for Cd, Ni, and Pb, and low for Cr. The soil pollution index (SOPI) proved to be suitable for evaluating and comparing PTE pollution in regions with different soil properties.

Coupled controls of the infiltration of rivers, urban activities and carbonate on trace elements in a karst groundwater system from Guiyang, Southwest China

Hydrogeochemical processes of trace elements (TEs) are of considerable significance to river water and groundwater resource assessment and utilization in the karst region. Therefore, seven TEs were analyzed to investigate their contents, spatial variations, sources, and controlling factors in Guiyang, a typical karst urban area in southwest China. The results showed that the average content of TEs in river water (e.g., As = 1.44 ± 0.47 μg/L andCo = 0.15 ± 0.06 μg/L) was higher than that of groundwater (e.g., As = 0.51 ± 0.42 μg/L andCo = 0.09 ± 0.05 μg/L). The types of groundwater samples were dominated by Ca/Mg-HCO₃ and Ca/Mg-Cl types, while those of the river water samples were Ca-Cl and Ca/Mg-Cl types. Principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis (CA) analyses indicated that As and Mn in the groundwater of the study area were related to river infiltration. The end-member analysis further revealed that river infiltration (As = 0.86-1.81 μg/L, Cl/SO₄^2- = 0.62-0.89) and urban activities (As = 0.21-0.32 μg/L, Cl/SO₄^2- = 0.51-0.89) were two main controlling factors of TEs (e.g., As, Co, and Mn) in the study area. In addition, the ion ratios in river and groundwater samples indicated that the weathering of carbonates was also an important control on the hydrogeochemistry of TEs (e.g., Fe and Mn) in Guiyang waters. This study showed that the trace element (TE) contents of groundwater in the Guiyang area were greatly associated with urban input and river recharge, and provided a new perspective for understanding the geochemical behavior of TEs in urban surface and groundwater bodies, which will help the protection of groundwater in the karst areas of southwest China.
