Lignocellulosic biomass fertilizers: Production, characterization, and agri-applications

The growing focus on sustainable agriculture and optimal resource utilization has spurred investigations into lignocellulosic biomass as a potential source for producing environmentally friendly fertilizers. This paper reviews recent advancements in the production and application of innovative fertilizers derived from lignocellulose. It highlights potential in enhancing agricultural productivity and reducing environmental impacts such as carbon footprint and water pollution. The paper outlines various methods for conversion, highlighting the unique advantages of chemical, enzymatic, and microbiological processes, for converting lignocellulosic biomass into nutrient-rich fertilizers. The study compares the efficacy of lignocellulosic fertilizers to traditional fertilizers in promoting crop growth, enhancing soil health, and reducing nutrient losses. The results demonstrate the potential of lignocellulosic biomass-derived fertilizers in promoting resource efficiency and sustainable agriculture. While this research significantly contributes to the existing body of knowledge, further studies on long-term impacts and scalability are recommended for the development of innovative and sustainable agricultural practices.

A critical review for the impact of anaerobic digestion on the sustainable development goals

Anaerobic Digestion (AD) technology emerges as a viable solution for managing municipal organic waste, offering pollution reduction and the generation of biogas and fertilisers. This study reviews the research works for the advancements in AD implementation to effectively impact the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Furthermore, the study critically analyses responsible waste management that contributes to health and safety, elevating quality of life in both rural and urban areas and, finally, creates a map of AD outputs onto all 17 SDGs. Finally, the assessment employs the three sustainability pillars (i.e., economic, environmental, and social perspectives) to examine the direct and indirect links between AD and all 17 UN SDGs. The findings reveal substantial progress, such as poverty reduction through job creation, bolstering economic growth (SDGs 1, 8, 10, 12), enhancing agricultural productivity (SDG 2), advancing renewable energy usage and diminishing reliance on fossil fuels (SDG 7), fostering inclusive education and gender equality (SDGs 4, 5, 9), combating climate change (SDG 13), transforming cities into sustainable and harmonious environments (SDGs 11, 16, 17), and curbing environmental pollution (SDGs 3, 6, 12, 14, 15). Nonetheless, the study highlights the need for further efforts to achieve the SDG targets, particularly in part of liquid and solid fertilisers as the AD outputs.

Ruminal content biochar supplementation for enhanced biomethanation of rice straw: Focusing on biochar characterization and dose optimization

Anaerobic digestion (AD) of agricultural wastes is a promising approach for energy recovery and crop residue management. However, its recalcitrant chemical structure hinders microbial hydrolysis and reduces biomethane production under AD. Biochar supplementation has been proven to promote the digestibility and biomethanation of lignocellulosic substrates. Therefore, this study investigated the influence of different pyrolysis temperatures (450 °C, 550 °C, and 650 °C) on the physicochemical properties of biochar. Furthermore, the impact of ruminal content biochar supplementation (1 %, 2 %, and 3 %) on the AD of rice straw with rumen fluid as inoculum has been investigated. The ruminal content biochar (RUCB) supplemented reactors showed an increment in biomethane yield and the highest cumulative biomethane yield 243.11 mL/g volatile solids (VS)) was recorded at 2 % RUCB supplementation, followed by 227.12 mL/g VS at 1 % RUCB supplementation and 162.86 mL/g VS at 3 % RUCB supplementation (P > 0.05). Compared to the control reactors (128.68 mL/g VS), RUCB supplemented reactors exhibited 1.88-fold, 1.76-fold, and 1.26-fold increments in biomethane yield due to pH stabilization and facilitation of microbial biofilm formation on the biochar. The correlation analysis showed that biomethane production is positively correlated with VS reduction (R2 = 0.9852). This study proposed a potential strategy to utilize ruminal content waste as a feedstock for biochar production and its application in AD for accelerating the biomethanation of rice straw.

Biomethanol production from renewable resources: a sustainable approach

The abundant availability of various kinds of biomass and their use as feedstock for the production of gaseous and liquid biofuels has been considered a viable, eco-friendly, and sustainable mode of energy generation. Gaseous fuels like biogas and liquid fuels, e.g., bioethanol, biodiesel, and biomethanol derived from biological sources, have been theorized to produce numerous industrially relevant organic compounds replacing the traditional practice of employing fossil fuels as a raw material. Among the biofuels explored, biomethanol has shown promising potential to be a future product addressing multifactorial issues concerning sustainable energy and associated process developments. The presented mini-review has explored the importance and application of biomethanol as a value-added product. The biomethanol production process was well reviewed by focusing on different thermochemical and biochemical conversion processes. Syngas and biogas have been acknowledged as potential resources for biomethanol synthesis. The emphasis on biochemical processes is laid on the principal metabolic pathways and enzymatic machinery involved or used by microbial physiology to convert feedstock into biomethanol under normal temperature and pressure conditions. The advantage of minimizing the cost of production by utilizing suggested modifications to the overall process of biomethanol production that involves metabolic and genetic engineering in microbial strains used in the production process has been delineated. The challenges that exist in our current knowledge domain, impeding large-scale commercial production potential of biomethanol at a cost-effective rate, and strategies to overcome them along with its future scenarios have also been pointed out.

A review on the emerging conversion technology of cellulose, starch, lignin, protein and other organics from vegetable-fruit-based waste

A large amount of vegetable-fruit-based waste (VFBW) belonging to agricultural waste is produced around the world every year, imposing a huge burden on the environment and sustainable development. VFBW contains a lot of water and useful organic compounds (e.g., cellulose, minerals, starch, proteins, organic acids, lipids, and soluble sugars). Taking into account the composition characteristics and circular economy of VFBW, many new emerging conversion technologies for the treatment of VFBW (such as hydrothermal gasification, ultrasound-assisted extraction, and synthesis of bioplastics) have been developed. This review summarizes the current literature discussing the technical parameters, process, mechanism, and characteristics of various emerging conversion methods, as well as analyzing the application, environmental impact, and bio-economy of by-products from the conversion process, to facilitate solutions to the key problems of engineering cases using these methods. The shortcomings of the current study and the direction of future research are also highlighted in the review.
