Revealing the response of microbial communities to polyethylene micro(nano)plastics exposure in cold seep sediment

Colonization characteristics and dynamic transition of archaea communities on polyethylene and polypropylene microplastics in the sediments of mangrove ecosystems

Microplastics are a growing concern in mangrove ecosystems; however, their effects on archaeal communities and related ecological processes remain unclear. We conducted in situ biofilm-enrichment experiments to investigate the ecological influence of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene microplastics on archaeal communities in the sediments of mangrove ecosystems. The archaeal community present on microplastics was distinct from that of the surrounding sediments at an early stage but became increasingly similar over time. Bathyarchaeota, Thaumarchaeota, Euryarchaeota, and Asgardaeota were the most abundant phyla. Methanolobus, an archaeal biomarker, was enriched in PE biofilms, and significantly controlled by homogeneous selection in the plastisphere, indicating an increased potential risk of methane emission. The dominant archaeal assembly process in the sediments was deterministic (58.85%-70.47%), while that of the PE biofilm changed from stochastic to deterministic during the experiment. The network of PE plastispheres showed less complexity and competitive links, and higher modularity and stability than that of sediments. Functional prediction showed an increase in aerobic ammonia oxidation during the experiment, whereas methanogenesis and chemoheterotrophy were significantly higher in the plastisphere. This study provides novel insights into the impact of microplastic pollution on archaeal communities and their mediating ecological functions in mangrove ecosystems.

Exploring carbon content variation in microplastics sequestrated from seawater to sediment in the Haima cold seep area

In the decades since plastic has become widely used, deep-sea areas, specifically cold seeps, have developed into plastic sinks. Cold seeps contain clean energy natural gas hydrates and act as a barrier reducing methane migration to the upper water column. However, the impacts of microplastics (MPs) on the carbon content in the cold seep remain unclear. In this study, we explored spatial changes in the MPs' carbon content (MPC) selecting the Haima cold seep (HCS) as the study area. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) For active seepage areas, the mass abundance of the MPs increases with the methane seepage strength in all water columns and sediment of strong seepage areas. It decreases with the seepage strength in the sediment cores in other areas. (2)The MPC is positively correlated with the depth of the water column in the non-seepage area, while it is negatively correlated in the sediment core. (3) The surface roughness of the MPs was greater in the middle of the water column and the sediment core at ROV1. In the high-pressure and oligotrophic cold seep, the amount and method of microbial utilization of carbon from the MPs deserve greater attention.

Effects of microplastics on cold seep sediment prokaryotic communities

Cold seep sediments are an important reservoir of microplastics (MPs) whose impact on the structure and function of prokaryotic community is not well understood. In this study, the impact of 0.2% and 1% (w/w) polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), and polypropylene (PP) MPs on the cold seep sediment prokaryotic community was investigated in a 120-day laboratory incubation experiment. The results revealed that exposure to MPs altered sedimentary chemical properties in a type- and concentration-dependent manner. Furthermore, MPs significantly altered the structure of bacterial community, with some MPs degradation-associated bacterial phyla significantly increasing (p < 0.05). However, in the case of archaea, the changes in the structure of microbial community were less pronounced (p > 0.05). Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the addition of MPs reduced the network complexity, while PICRUSt2 and FAPROTAX analyses suggested that 0.2% PP and 1% PS MPs had the most significant effects on the nitrogen and carbon cycles (p < 0.05). Overall, this study provides new insights into the effects of MPs on the structure and function of microbial communities in cold seep sediments.

A comprehensive insight into the abundance and community of anammox bacteria in sediments of Hangzhou Bay, China

A total of 13 surface sediments were collected from Hangzhou Bay (HZB) for an investigation into the distribution and influencing factors of anammox bacterial community. The anammox bacterial 16S rRNA and hzo genes ranged between 2.34 × 105 to 9.22 × 105 copies/g and 3.68 × 105 to 1.70 × 106 copies/g, respectively. The results of high throughput sequencing (HTS) revealed that the obtained OTUs were affiliated with five known genera, named Ca. Scalindua, Ca. Jettenia, Ca. Brocadia, Ca. Kuenenia and Ca. Anammoxoglobus. RDA analysis indicated that salinity, pH, and water depth influenced the anammox bacterial community. Furthermore, network analysis identified Ca. Scalindua as a key genus. Neutral community model (NCM) and modified stochasticity ratio (MST) indicated that the deterministic process dominated the anammox bacterial community assembly. Overall, this study offers a more comprehensive understanding of the abundance and community of anammox bacteria in the sediments of HZB.
