Coagulative removal of microplastics from aqueous matrices: Recent progresses and future perspectives

Innovative solutions for the removal of emerging microplastics from water by utilizing advanced techniques

Microplastic pollution is one of the most pressing global environmental problems due to its harmful effects on living organisms and ecosystems. To address this issue, researchers have explored several techniques to successfully eliminate microplastics from water sources. Chemical coagulation, electrocoagulation, magnetic extraction, adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, and biodegradation are some of the recognized techniques used for the removal of microplastics from water. In addition, membrane-based techniques encompass processes propelled by pressure or potential, along with sophisticated membrane technologies like the dynamic membrane and the membrane bioreactor. Recently, researchers have been developing advanced membranes composed of metal-organic frameworks, MXene, zeolites, carbon nanomaterials, metals, and metal oxides to remove microplastics. This paper aims to analyze the effectiveness, advantages, and drawbacks of each method to provide insights into their application for reducing microplastic pollution.

Ecotoxicological risk assessment on coagulation-flocculation in water/wastewater treatment: a systematic review

It is undeniable that removal efficiency is the main factor in coagulation-flocculation (C-F) process for wastewater treatment. However, as far as environmental safety is concerned, the ecotoxicological aspect of the C-F process needs to be examined further. In this study, a systematic review was performed based on publications related to the toxicity research in C-F technology for wastewater treatment. Through a series of screening steps, available toxicity studies were categorized into four themes, namely acute toxicity, phytotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity, which comprised 48 articles. A compilation of the methodologies executed for each theme was also outlined. The findings show that conventional metallic coagulants (e.g., alum, iron chloride, and iron sulfate) were less toxic when tested on test species such as Daphnia magna (water flea), Lattuca sativa (lettuce), and animal cells compared to synthetic polymers. Natural coagulants such as chitosan or Moringa oleifera were less toxic compared to metallic coagulants; however, inconsistent results were observed. Moreover, an advanced C-F (electrocoagulation) as well as integration between C-F and Fenton, adsorption, and photocatalytic does not significantly change the toxicological profile of the system. It was found that diverse coagulants and flocculants, species sensitivity, complexity in toxicity testing, and dynamic environmental conditions were some key challenges faced in this field. Finally, it was expected that advances in technology, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a growing awareness of environmental sustainability will drive efforts to develop more effective and eco-friendly coagulants and flocculants, improve toxicity testing methodologies, and enhance the overall efficiency and safety of water and wastewater treatment processes.

Mitigating Dietary Microplastic Accumulation and Oxidative Stress Response in European Seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Juveniles Using a Natural Microencapsulated Antioxidant

Aquafeed's contamination by microplastics can pose a risk to fish health and quality since they can be absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract and translocate to different tissues. The liver acts as a retaining organ with the consequent triggering of oxidative stress response. The present study aimed to combine the use of natural astaxanthin with natural-based microcapsules to counteract these negative side effects. European seabass juveniles were fed diets containing commercially available fluorescent microplastic microbeads (1-5 μm; 50 mg/kg feed) alone or combined with microencapsulated astaxanthin (AX) (7 g/kg feed; tested for half or whole feeding trial-30 or 60 days, respectively). Fish from the different dietary treatments did not evidence variations in survival and growth performance and did not show pathological alterations at the intestinal level. However, the microplastics were absorbed at the intestinal level with a consequent translocation to the liver, leading, when provided solely, to sod1, sod2, and cat upregulation. Interestingly, the dietary implementation of microencapsulated AX led to a mitigation of oxidative stress. In addition, the microcapsules, due to their composition, promoted microplastic coagulation in the fish gut, limiting their absorption and accumulation in all the tissues analyzed. These results were supported by in vitro tests, which demonstrated that the microcapsules promoted microplastic coagula formation too large to be absorbed at the intestinal level and by the fact that the coagulated microplastics were released through the fish feces.

Recent advances in microplastic removal from drinking water by coagulation: Removal mechanisms and influencing factors

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants that are widely detected in drinking water and pose a potential risk to humans. Therefore, the MP removal from drinking water is a critical challenge. Recent studies have shown that MPs can be removed by coagulation. However, the coagulation removal of MPs from drinking water remains inadequately understood. Herein, the efficiency, mechanisms, and influencing factors of coagulation for removing MPs from drinking water are critically reviewed. First, the efficiency of MP removal by coagulation in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) and laboratories was comprehensively summarized, which indicated that coagulation plays an important role in MP removal from drinking water. The difference in removal effectiveness between the DWTPs and laboratory was mainly due to variations in treatment conditions and limitations of the detection techniques. Several dominant coagulation mechanisms for removing MPs and their research methods are thoroughly discussed. Charge neutralization is more relevant for small-sized MPs, whereas large-sized MPs are more dependent on adsorption bridging and sweeping. Furthermore, the factors influencing the efficiency of MP removal were jointly analyzed using meta-analysis and a random forest model. The meta-analysis was used to quantify the individual effects of each factor on coagulation removal efficiency by performing subgroup analysis. The random forest model quantified the relative importance of the influencing factors on removal efficiency, the results of which were ordered as follows: MPs shape > Coagulant type > Coagulant dosage > MPs concentration > MPs size > MPs type > pH. Finally, knowledge gaps and potential future directions are proposed. This review assists in the understanding of the coagulation removal of MPs, and provides novel insight into the challenges posed by MPs in drinking water.

Coagulative removal of polystyrene microplastics from aqueous matrices using FeCl3-chitosan system: Experimental and artificial neural network modeling

Effluent from sewage treatment plants (STPs) is a significant source of microplastics (MPs) re-entry into the environment. Coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation (CFS) process as an initial tertiary treatment step requires investigation for coagulative MPs removal from secondary-treated sewage effluents. In this study, experiments were conducted on synthetic water containing 25 mg/L polystyrene (PS) MPs using varying dosages of FeCl3 (1-10 mg/L) and chitosan (0.25-9 mg/L) to assess the effect of process parameters, such as pH (4-8), stirring speed (0-200 rpm), and settling time (10-40 min). Results revealed that ∼89.3% and 21.4% of PS removal were achieved by FeCl3 and chitosan, respectively. Further, their combination resulted in a maximum of 99.8% removal at favorable conditions: FeCl3: 2 mg/L, chitosan: 7 mg/L, pH: 6.3, stirring speed: 100 rpm, and settling time: 30 min, with a statistically significant (p < 0.05) effect. Artificial neural network (ANN) validated the experimental results with RMSE = 1.0643 and R2 = 0.9997. Charge neutralization, confirmed by zeta potential, and adsorption, ascertained by field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), were primary mechanisms for efficient PS removal. For practical considerations, the application of the FeCl3-chitosan system on the effluents from moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) and sequencing batch reactor (SBR)-based STPs, spiked with PS microbeads, showed > 98% removal at favorable conditions.

Comparing the effects of Al-based coagulants in waste activated sludge anaerobic digestion: Methane yield, kinetics and sludge implications

Due to its effectiveness and ease of application, the process of flocculation and coagulation is often used for pollution removal in wastewater treatment. Most of these coagulants precipitate and accumulate in waste activated sludge (WAS), and could negatively affect sludge treatments, as observed for anaerobic digestion. Nowadays, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are widely discussed because of the current paradigm shift from linear to circular economy, and the treatments performed at the facility should be planned to avoid or reduce adverse effects on other processes. The aim of this study was to compare the impact of poly aluminum chloride (PAC) and aluminum sulfate (AS) on WAS anaerobic digestion, by feeding replicate serum reactors with different levels of coagulant (5, 10 and 20 mg Al/g TS). Reactors without the addition of any coagulants represented the control group. Results revealed that Al-based coagulants inhibited methane production, which decreased as the coagulant addition increased. The inhibition was much more severe in AS-conditioned reactors, showing average reductions in methane yield from 14.4 to 31.7%, compared to the control (167.76 ± 1.88 mL CH4/g VS). Analytical analysis, FTIR and SEM investigations revealed that the addition of coagulants affected the initial conditions of the anaerobic reactors, penalizing the solubilization, hydrolysis and acidogenesis phases. Furthermore, the massive formation of H2S in AS-conditioned reactors played a key role in the suppression of methane phase. On the other hand, the use of coagulant can promote the accumulation and recovery of nutrient in WAS, especially in terms of phosphorus. Our findings will expand research knowledge in this field and guide stakeholders in the choice of coagulants at full scale plant. Future research should focus on reducing the effect of coagulants on methane production by modifying or testing new types of flocculants.

Microbeads in personal care products sold in Pakistan: extraction, quantification, characterization, and buoyancy analysis

Microbeads used in personal care products (PCPs) as an exfoliating agent or as a sorbent phase for delivering active ingredients are the most common sources of microplastics. The release of these plastic microbeads into aquatic environments has raised significant concerns due to their direct availability for ingestion by organisms upon entering the recipient waters. In this study, twelve personal care products (PCPs; 5 face washes and 7 scrubs) were analyzed for microbead content, size, polymer type, and buoyant behavior. Among the face washes, the highest microbead content (i.e., 11 ± 1.2 mg/g) was found in Neutrogena (NS), while the lowest was found in Nivea (NI) with 0.33 ± 0 mg/g. In case of scrubs, Cool and Cool (CL) contained a higher concentration of microbeads (i.e., 57.08±14.15 mg/g) and a lower concentration was found in Yong Chin (YC) (i.e., 10.5±1.5 mg/g). The sizes of microbeads ranged from 3.14 ± 0 to 747 ± 313 μm, and most of the isolated microbeads showed negative buoyant behavior in both freshwater and seawater. The FTIR spectra showed that the microbeads were mainly composed of ethyl-vinyl acetate (66.66%), high-density polyethylene (16.66%), polyethylene terephthalate (8.3%), and nitrile (8.3%). The presence of plastic microbeads in PCPs highlights the need to regulate their use as an exfoliating agent and to raise public awareness to prevent the discharge of these persistent and potentially harmful elements into the environment.
