Green Chemistry and Molecularly Imprinted Membranes

Technological progress has made chemistry assume a role of primary importance in our daily life. However, the worsening of the level of environmental pollution is increasingly leading to the realization of more eco-friendly chemical processes due to the advent of green chemistry. The challenge of green chemistry is to produce more and better while consuming and rejecting less. It represents a profitable approach to address environmental problems and the new demands of industrial competitiveness. The concept of green chemistry finds application in several material syntheses such as organic, inorganic, and coordination materials and nanomaterials. One of the different goals pursued in the field of materials science is the application of GC for producing sustainable green polymers and membranes. In this context, extremely relevant is the application of green chemistry in the production of imprinted materials by means of its combination with molecular imprinting technology. Referring to this issue, in the present review, the application of the concept of green chemistry in the production of polymeric materials is discussed. In addition, the principles of green molecular imprinting as well as their application in developing greenificated, imprinted polymers and membranes are presented. In particular, green actions (e.g., the use of harmless chemicals, natural polymers, ultrasound-assisted synthesis and extraction, supercritical CO2, etc.) characterizing the imprinting and the post-imprinting process for producing green molecularly imprinted membranes are highlighted.

Simultaneous phase-inversion and imprinting based sensor for highly sensitive and selective detection of bisphenol A

A novel recognition element of molecularly imprinted films (MIFs) was synthesized by wet phase inversion (WPI) on the surface of Ti/TiO₂ electrode for highly selective and sensitive electrochemical detection of bisphenol A (BPA). The Ti/TiO₂/MIFs sensor was constructed by casting the precursor poly(acrylonitrile-co-acrylic acid) (p(AN-co-AA)) in dimethyl sulfoxide containing template molecule BPA onto the electrode and then immersing into water, resulting in simultaneous p(AN-co-AA) precipitation and BPA imprinting via the facile WPI. The imprinted sites could selectively rebind BPA through hydrogen bonding and hence lead to the equalizing current increase in amperometric detection, by which the BPA could be sensed electrochemically. Accordingly, the Ti/TiO₂/MIFs sensor offered a favorable linearity within the wide range over five orders of magnitude (4.4nM-0.13mM), and a low detection limit down to 1.3nM. Excellent recognition selectivity for BPA was also attained over its analogues. Furthermore, this sensor was successfully applied to detect BPA in seawater and paper cup samples, and high recoveries were 86-110% with low relative standard deviations of 1.3-3.2%. By using BPA as a model, the MIFs-based method may provide a facile, rapid, and cost-effective way for ultrasensitive electrochemical measurements of various targeted compounds with good applicability to WPI.

Recent configurations and progressive uses of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers for drug analysis

Since the introduction of the molecularly imprinting technology (MIT) in the 1970s, it becomes an emerging technology with the potential for wide-ranging applications in drug determination. With the rise of green chemistry, many researchers began to focus on the application and development of green materials which led to the breakthrough of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) in the green chemistry. Because of the low concentration levels in the human matrices, almost adequate analytical methods should be used for quantification of drugs at the trace levels. In recent years there have been reported benefits of combining MIPs with additional features, e.g. magnetic properties, through the build-up of this type of material on magnetite particles. Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) is a new material which is composed of magnetic material and non-magnetic polymer material and shares the characteristics of high adsorption capacity to template molecule, special selective recognition ability, and the magnetic adsorption property. These materials have been widely used in the different fields such as chemical, biological and medical science. This review describes the novel configurations and progressive applications of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers to the drug analysis. Also, the advantages and drawbacks of each methodology, as well as the future expected trends, are evaluated.

Fouling Resistant CA/PVA/TiO2 Imprinted Membranes for Selective Recognition and Separation Salicylic Acid from Waste Water

Highly selective cellulose acetate (CA)/poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/titanium dioxide (TiO₂) imprinted membranes were synthesized by phase inversion and dip coating technique. The CA blend imprinted membrane was synthesized by phase inversion technique with CA as membrane matrix, polyethyleneimine (PEI) as the functional polymer, and the salicylic acid (SA) as the template molecule. The CA/PVA/TiO₂ imprinted membranes were synthesized by dip coating of CA blend imprinted membrane in PVA and different concentration (0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 wt %) of TiO₂ nanoparticles aqueous solution. The SEM analysis showed that the surface morphology of membrane was strongly influenced by the concentration of TiO₂ nanoparticles. Compared with CA/PVA-TiO₂(0.05, 0.1, 0.2%)-MIM, the CA/PVA-TiO₂(0.4%)-MIM possessed higher membrane flux, kinetic equilibrium adsorption amount, binding capacity and better selectivity for SA. It was found that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was studied to describe the kinetic of CA/PVA-TiO₂(0.2%)-MIM judging by multiple regression analysis. Adsorption isotherm analysis indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity for SA were 24.43 mg g^-1. Moreover, the selectivity coefficients of CA/PVA-TiO₂ (0.2%)-MIM for SA relative to p-hydroxybenzoic acid (p-HB) and methyl salicylate (MS) were 3.87 and 3.55, respectively.

ECTFE membranes produced by non-toxic diluents for organic solvent filtration separation

A new grade of ethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene, low melting point HALAR® ECTFE (LMP ECTFE), was studied and used as a polymer for the preparation of solvent-resistant flat-sheet membranes.

Visual Recognition of Aliphatic and Aromatic Amines Using a Fluorescent Gel: Application of a Sonication-Triggered Organogel

A naphthalimide-based fluorescent gelator (N1) containing an alkenyl group has been designed and characterized. This material is able to gelate alcohols via a precipitate-to-gel transformation when triggered with ultrasound for less than 2 min (S-gel). The gelation process in n-propanol was studied by means of absorption, fluorescence, and IR spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, and X-ray diffraction patterns. The fluorescence intensity of N1 decreased during the gelation process in a linear relationship with the sonication time. The S-gel of N1 could be used to sense aliphatic and aromatic amines by measuring the change in the signal output. For example, the addition of propylamine to the S-gel of N1 resulted in a dramatic enhancement of the fluorescence intensity, accompanied by a gel-to-sol transition. On the contrary, when the S-gel of N1 was treated with aromatic amines such as aniline, fluorescence was quenched and there was no gel collapse. The sensing mechanisms were studied by (1)H NMR, small-angle X-ray scattering, SEM and spectroscopic experiments. It is proposed that isomerization of the alkenyl group of N1 from the trans to cis form occurs when the S-gel is treated with propylamine, resulting in a gel-sol transition. However, the aromatic aniline molecules prefer to insert into the gel networks of N1 via hydrogen-bonding and charge-transfer interactions, maintaining the gel state. As potential applications, testing strips of N1 were prepared to detect aniline.

Bio-mimetic sensors based on molecularly imprinted membranes

An important challenge for scientific research is the production of artificial systems able to mimic the recognition mechanisms occurring at the molecular level in living systems. A valid contribution in this direction resulted from the development of molecular imprinting. By means of this technology, selective molecular recognition sites are introduced in a polymer, thus conferring it bio-mimetic properties. The potential applications of these systems include affinity separations, medical diagnostics, drug delivery, catalysis, etc. Recently, bio-sensing systems using molecularly imprinted membranes, a special form of imprinted polymers, have received the attention of scientists in various fields. In these systems imprinted membranes are used as bio-mimetic recognition elements which are integrated with a transducer component. The direct and rapid determination of an interaction between the recognition element and the target analyte (template) was an encouraging factor for the development of such systems as alternatives to traditional bio-assay methods. Due to their high stability, sensitivity and specificity, bio-mimetic sensors-based membranes are used for environmental, food, and clinical uses. This review deals with the development of molecularly imprinted polymers and their different preparation methods. Referring to the last decades, the application of these membranes as bio-mimetic sensor devices will be also reported.

Molecularly imprinted membranes

Although the roots of molecularly imprinted polymers lie in the beginning of 1930s in the past century, they have had an exponential growth only 40-50 years later by the works of Wulff and especially by Mosbach. More recently, it was also proved that molecular imprinted membranes (i.e., polymer thin films) that show recognition properties at molecular level of the template molecule are used in their formation. Different procedures and potential application in separation processes and catalysis are reported. The influences of different parameters on the discrimination abilities are also discussed.
