Tailoring surfaces of hybrid ceramics for gas adsorption – From alkanes to CO2

Macroporous Poly(hydromethylsiloxane) Networks as Precursors to Hybrid Ceramics (Ceramers) for Deposition of Palladium Catalysts

Poly(hydromethylsiloxane) (PHMS) was cross-linked with 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-1,3,5,7-tetravinylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4Vi) in water-in-oil High Internal Phase Emulsions to form macroporous materials known as polyHIPEs. It was shown that in the process of pyrolysis under Ar atmosphere at 520 °C, the obtained polyHIPEs were converted to ceramers with high yields (82.8-88.0 wt.%). Structurally, the obtained ceramers were hybrid ceramics, i.e., they consisted of Si-O framework and preserved organic moieties. Macropores present in the polyHIPE precursors remained in ceramers. Ceramers contained also micro- and mesopores which resulted from the precursor's mass loss during pyrolysis. Total pore volume and BET specific surface area related to the existence of micro- and mesopores in ceramers depended on the PHMS: D4Vi ratio applied in polyHIPE synthesis. The highest total pore volume (0.143 cm3/g) and specific surface area (344 m2/g) were reached after pyrolysis of the precursor prepared with the lowest amount of D4Vi as compared to PHMS. The composite materials obtained after deposition of PdO nanoparticles onto ceramers followed by reduction of PdO by H2 were active and selective catalysts for phenylacetylene hydrogenation to styrene.

Silicon Oxycarbide (SiOC)-Supported Ionic Liquids: Heterogeneous Catalysts for Cyclic Carbonate Formation

Silicon oxycarbides (SiOCs) impregnated with tetrabutylammonium halides (TBAX) were investigated as an alternative to silica-based supported ionic liquid phases for the production of bio-based cyclic carbonates derived from limonene and linseed oil. The support materials and the supported ionic liquid phases (SILPs) were characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, microscopy, and solvent adsorption. The silicon oxycarbide supports were pyrolyzed at 300-900 °C prior to being coated with different tetrabutylammonium halides and further used as heterogeneous catalysts for the formation of cyclic carbonates in batch mode. Excellent selectivities of 97-100% and yields of 53-62% were obtained with tetrabutylammonium chloride supported on the silicon oxycarbides. For comparison, the catalytic performance of commonly employed silica-supported ionic liquids was investigated under the same conditions. The silica-supported species triggered the formation of a diol as a byproduct, leading to a lower selectivity of 87% and a lower yield of 48%. Ultimately, macroporous monolithic SiOC-SILPs with suitable permeability characteristics (k1 = 10-11 m2) were produced via photopolymerization-assisted solidification templating and applied for the selective and continuous production of limonene carbonate with supercritical carbon dioxide as the reagent and sole solvent. Constant product output over 48 h without concurrent catalyst leaching was achieved.

Microporous Borocarbonitrides BxCyNz: Synthesis, Characterization, and Promises for CO2 Capture

Porous borocarbonitrides (denoted BCN) were prepared through pyrolysis of the polymer stemmed from dehydrocoupled ethane 1,2-diamineborane (BH₃NH₂CH₂CH₂NH₂BH₃, EDAB) in the presence of F-127. These materials contain interconnected pores in the nanometer range with a high specific surface area up to 511 m² · g^-1. Gas adsorption of CO₂ demonstrated an interesting uptake (3.23 mmol · g^-1 at 0 °C), a high CO₂/N₂ selectivity as well as a significant recyclability after several adsorption-desorption cycles. For comparison's sake, a synthesized non-porous BCN as well as a commercial BN sample were studied to investigate the role of porosity and carbon doping factors in CO₂ capture. The present work thus tends to demonstrate that the two-step synthesis of microporous BCN adsorbent materials from EDAB using a bottom-up approach (dehydrocoupling followed by pyrolysis at 1100 °C) is relatively simple and interesting.

Preparation and Characterization of Pulp and Paper Mill Sludge-Activated Biochars Using Alkaline Activation: A Box-Behnken Design Approach

This study utilized pulp and paper mill sludge as a carbon source to produce activated biochar adsorbents. The response surface methodology (RSM) application for predicting and optimizing the activated biochar preparation conditions was investigated. Biochars were prepared based on a Box-Behnken design (BBD) approach with three independent factors (i.e., pyrolysis temperature, holding time, and KOH:biomass ratio), and the responses evaluated were specific surface area (SSA), micropore area (S _micro), and mesopore area (S _meso). According to the RSM and BBD analysis, a pyrolysis temperature of 800 °C for 3 h of holding and an impregnation ratio of 1:1 (biomass:KOH) are the optimum conditions for obtaining the highest SSA (885 m² g^-1). Maximized S _micro was reached at 800 °C, 1 h and the ratio of 1:1, and for maximizing S _meso (569.16 m² g^-1), 800 °C, 2 h and ratio 1:1.5 (445-473 m² g^-1) were employed. The biochars presented different micro- and mesoporosity characteristics depending on pyrolysis conditions. Elemental analysis showed that biochars exhibited high carbon and oxygen content. Raman analysis indicated that all biochars had disordered carbon structures with structural defects, which can boost their properties, e.g., by improving their adsorption performances. The hydrophobicity-hydrophilicity experiments showed very hydrophobic biochar surfaces. The biochars were used as adsorbents for diclofenac and amoxicillin. They presented very high adsorption performances, which could be explained by the pore filling, hydrophobic surface, and π-π electron-donor-acceptor interactions between aromatic rings of both adsorbent and adsorbate. The biochar with the highest surface area (and highest uptake performance) was subjected to regeneration tests, showing that it can be reused multiple times.

High efficiency removal of triclosan by structure-directing agent modified mesoporous MIL-53(Al)

In order to expand the potential applications of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), structure directing agents modified mesoporous MIL-53(Al) (MIL-53(Al)-1) was investigated to adsorb triclosan (TCS) with two different initial concentrations. MIL-53(Al)-1 with high mesoporosity and total pore volume exhibited higher adsorption capacity and 4.4 times faster adsorption of TCS at low concentration (1 mg L^-1) than that of microporous MIL-53(Al). Also, mesoporous as well as microporous MIL-53(Al) showed significant higher adsorption capacity and two orders of magnitude greater fast uptake of TCS than two kinds of mesoporous-activated carbon. The adsorption of TCS onto MIL-53(Al)-1 released more energy and had higher disorderliness than TCS on MIL-53(Al). The superior adsorption characteristics of MIL-53(Al)-1 were preserved over a wide pH range (4-9), at high concentration of ionic strengths, and in the presence of coexisting compounds (anions, cations, phenol, aniline, and humic acid). The selectivity adsorption and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra revealed that TCS adsorption on MIL-53(Al)s was mainly driven by hydrophobicity interaction assisted with hydrogen bonding on MIL-53(Al)s. MIL-53(Al)s can be effectively regenerated several times by washing with 90% methanol-water (pH 11). All of the above results demonstrated MIL-53(Al)s are promising adsorbents for water purification.
