Abstract
Nanomaterials have been commonly employed to enhance the performance of polymeric membrane materials that are used in several industrial applications. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have gained notable attention over the years for use in membrane technology due to their anti-biofouling properties, salt rejection capability, exceptional electrical conductivity, and mechanical properties. This paper aims to discuss some of the recent applications of CNTs in membrane technology and their effect on a larger scale. The paper reviews successful case studies of incorporation of CNTs in membranes and their impact on water purification, desalination, gas separations, and energy storage, in an effort to provide a better understanding of their capabilities. Regarding the future trends of this technology, this review emphasizes improving the large-scale production processes and addressing environmental and health-related hazards of CNTs during production and usage.

Abstract
Ethylene glycol (EG) is widely used in various economic and industrial fields. The demand for its efficient separation and recovery from water is constantly growing. To improve the pervaporation characteristics of a poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) membrane in dehydration of ethylene glycol, the modification with graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles was used. The effects of the introduction of various GO quantities into the PPO matrix on the structure and physicochemical properties were studied by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force (AFM) microscopies, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), swelling experiments, and contact angle measurements. Two types of membranes based on PPO and PPO/GO composite were developed: dense membranes and supported membranes on a fluoroplast substrate (MFFC). Transport properties of the developed membranes were evaluated in the pervaporation dehydration of EG in a wide concentration range (10–90 wt.% and 10–30 wt.% water for the dense and supported membranes, respectively). The supported PPO/GO(0.7%)/MFFC membrane demonstrated the best transport properties in pervaporation dehydration of EG (10–30 wt.% water) at 22 °C: permeation flux ca. 15 times higher compared to dense PPO membrane—180–230 g/(m2·h)), 99.8–99.6 wt.% water in the permeate. The membrane is suitable for the promising industrial application.

Abstract
Metal-organic framework membranes are frequently used in gas separations, but rare in pervaporation for liquid chemical upgrading, especially for separating water from polyols, due to lack of highly compact and robust micro-architecture. Here, we report hetero-lattice intergrown membranes in which amino-MIL-101 (Cr) particles embedded into the micro-gaps of MIL-53 (Al) rod arrays after secondary growth. By means of high-resolution TEM and two-dimensional topologic simulation, the connection between these two distinct MOF lattices at molecular-level and their crystallographic geometry harmony is identified, which leads to a close-knit structure at crystal boundaries of membranes. Typically, the membrane shows a separation factor as high as 13,000 for 90/10 ethanediol/water solution in pervaporation, yields polymer-grade ethanediol, and saves ca. 32% of energy consumption vs. vacuum distillation. It has a highly robust micro-architecture, with great tolerance to high pressure, durability against ultrasonic therapy and long-term separation stability over 600 h.

Abstract
Hybrid membranes based on poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) modified with heteroarm stars (HAS) were developed to separate ethylene glycol/water mixtures by pervaporation. The HAS consist of a small branching center fullerene C 60 and twelve arms of different nature, six arms of nonpolar polystyrene and six arms of polar poly-tert-butyl methacrylate. The changes of structure and physical properties with HAS inclusion were systematically studied using SEM, X-ray diffraction analysis, TGA, and contact angle measurements. Mass transfer of ethylene glycol and water through membranes was studied by sorption and pervaporation tests. It was found that the growth of HAS content up to 5 wt% in the membrane leads to an increase in the total flux and a strong increase in the separation factor. To evaluate intrinsic properties of the penetrant–membrane system, permeability and selectivity were calculated. Overall, utilizing star-shaped macromolecules as a filler can be a promising way to improve the separation performance of diffusion membranes.

Abstract
Piezoresistive properties play a vital role in the development of sensor for structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. Novel stable crack initiation method (SCIM) is established to improve the gauge factor (GF) with maximum achievable working strain region for PI tape enabled buckypaper hybrid sensors. Cracks are generated by applying strain rate-controlled tension force using dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). The sensor has been cycled in tension to characterize GF with crack opening. It is determined experimentally that GF increases with increasing crack opening and crack becomes unstable when opening increases above 8 µm. Tremendous improvement in GF has been observed which improved from single-digit to several hundreds. The highest GF obtained so far is ~255, showing 75 times improvement compared with the ones without the SCIM implementation. The crack initiation strain (CIS) is characterized by sonication and centrifugation time. It is determined experimentally that the maximum CIS of 3.5% can be achieved with sonication time of 40 min and increasing centrifuge time has an in-significantly dropping effect on CIS. Excellent stability/reproducibility has been proved/demonstrated on SCIM implemented sensors through a rigorous 12,500 tensile cycle test on DMA. The performance of sensor is practically demonstrated in tension and bending on glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) structures.

Abstract
In this study, hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene-poly(epoxide ionic liquid)-poly(urethane urea) (HTPB-PEIL-PU) membranes, HTPB-PEIL1-PU and HTPB-PEIL2-PU, were prepared by the reaction of functionalized PEIL, poly(1-methylimidazole-3-methyl-ethyloxy)hexafluorophosphate or poly(1-methylimidazole-3-methyl-ethyloxy)bistrifluoromethanesulfonimidate, respectively, with HTPB using 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) as the chain extender. The HTPB-PEIL-PU and HTPB membranes were investigated for the selective recovery of n-butanol from aqueous solutions by pervaporation. PEIL was confirmed to be successfully embedded in the PU membranes by 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared, and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. According to our mechanical measurements, the HTPB-PEIL-PU membranes retain the mechanical properties of the original PU membrane. PEIL was shown to enhance the diffusion rate of n-butanol significantly based on swelling behavior tests. The pervaporation flux through the HTPB-PEIL1-PU membrane increased with increasing feed temperature and feed concentration. In contrast, the separation factor of the HTPB-PEIL1-PU membrane increased with increasing feed temperature but decreased with increasing feed concentration. In addition, the HTPB-PEIL2-PU membrane exhibited an optimal separation factor of up to 29.2 at a feed concentration of 3% and a feed temperature of 70 °C, which is superior to that (22.7) through pure HTPB membranes. Furthermore, the HTPB-PEIL1-PU and HTPB-PEIL2-PU membranes show better long-term stability than other supported ionic liquid membranes.

Abstract
A bibliometric analysis based on Scopus database was performed to identify the global research trends related to Supported Ionic Liquid Membranes (SILMs) during the time period from 1995 to 2015. This work tries to improve the understanding of the most relevant research topics and applications. The results from the analysis reveal that only after 2005 the research efforts focused on SILMs became significant, since the references found before that year are scarce. The most important research works on the four main application groups for SILMs defined in this work (carbon dioxide separation, other gas phase separations, pervaporation and liquid phase separations) were summarized in this paper. Carbon dioxide separation appeared as the application that has received by far the most attention according to the research trends during the analysed period. Comments about other significant applications that are gaining attention, such as the employment of SILMs in analytical tasks or their consideration for the production of fuel cells, have been included.

Abstract
Abstract
The interest in ionic liquids, particularly in polymerizable ionic liquids, is motivated by their unique properties, such as good thermal stability, negligible vapor pressure, and wide electrochemical window. Due to these features ionic liquids were proposed to be used in the membrane separation technology. The utilization of conventional ionic liquids is, however, limited by their release from the membrane during the given separation process. Therefore, the incorporation of polymerizable ionic liquids may overcome this drawback for the industrial application. This work is a comprehensive overview of the advances of ionic liquid membranes for the separation of various compounds, i.e. gases, organic compounds, and metal ions.

Abstract
Over the course of the past decade, there has been growing interest in the development of different types of membranes composed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), including buckypapers and composite materials, for an ever-widening range of filtration applications. This article provides an overview of how different types of CNT membranes are prepared and the results obtained from investigations into their suitability for different applications. The latter involve the removal of small particles from air samples, the filtration of aqueous solutions containing organic compounds and/or bacteria, and the separation of individual liquids present in mixtures. A growing number of reports have demonstrated that the incorporation of CNTs into composite membranes confers an improved resistance to fouling caused by biomacromolecules and bacteria. These results are discussed, along with evidence that demonstrates it is possible to further reduce fouling by taking advantage of the inherent conductivity of composite membranes containing CNTs, as well as by using different types of electrochemical stimuli.
