Selective recovery of indium from iron-rich solutions using an Aliquat 336 iodide supported ionic liquid phase (SILP)

Development of ionic-liquid-impregnated activated carbon for sorptive removal of PFAS in drinking water treatment

Adsorption of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on activated carbon (AC) is considerably hindered by the surface water constituents, degrading the ability of the AC adsorption process to remove PFAS in drinking water treatment. Herein, we developed ionic-liquid-impregnated AC (IL/AC) as an alternative to AC for PFAS sorption and demonstrated its performance with real surface water for the first time. Ionic liquids (ILs) of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (IL(C2)) and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (IL(C6)) were selected from among 272 different ILs using the conductor-like screening model for realistic solvents (COSMO-RS) simulation. Impregnation of the ILs in AC was verified using various analytical techniques. Although the synthesized IL/ACs were less effective than pristine AC in treating PFAS in deionized water, their performances were less impacted by the surface water constituents, resulting in comparable or sometimes better performances than pristine AC for treating PFAS in surface water. The removal efficiencies of 10 wt% IL(C6)/AC for six PFAS were 1.40-1.96 times higher than those of pristine AC in a surface water sample containing 2.6 mg/L dissolved organic carbon and millimolar-level divalent cation concentration. PFAS partitioning from the surface water to ILs was not hindered by dissolved organic matter and was enhanced by the divalent cations, indicating the advantages of IL/ACs for treating significant amounts of PFAS in water. The synthesized IL/ACs were effective at treating coexisting pharmaceutical and personal-care products in surface water, showcasing their versatility for treating a broad range of water micropollutants.

Assessment of metal extraction from e-waste using supported IL membrane with reliable comparison between RSM regression and ANN framework

Recently, efficient techniques to remove indium ions from e-waste have been described due to their critical application. This paper illustrates the recovery of indium ions from an aqueous solution using a liquid membrane. CyphosIL 104 described the excellent potential for the extraction of indium ions. Evaluation of the five process parameters, such as indium concentration (10-100 mg/L), carrier concentration (0.05-0.2 mol/L), feed phase acidity (0.01-3 mol/L), chloride ion concentration (0.5-4 mol/L) and the stripping agent concentration (0.1-5 mol/L) were conducted. The interactive impacts of the various parameters on the extraction efficiency were investigated. The response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) were employed to model and compare the FS-SLM process results. RSM model with a quadratic equation (R2 = 0.9589) was the most suitable model for describing the efficiency. ANN model with six neurons showed a prediction of extraction efficiency with R2 = 0.9860. The best-optimized data were: 73.92 mg/L, 0.157 mol/L, 1.386 mol/L, 2.99 mol/L, and 3.06 mol/L for indium concentration, carrier concentration, feed phase acidity, chloride ion concentration, and stripping agent concentration. The results achieved by RSM and ANN led to an experimentally determined extraction efficiency of 93.91%, and 94.85%, respectively. It was close to the experimental data in the optimization condition (95.77%). Also, the evaluation shows that the ANN model has a better prediction and fitting ability to reach outcomes than the RSM model.

Computational and Experimental Investigation of the Selective Adsorption of Indium/Iron Ions by the Epigallocatechin Gallate Monomer

Selective recovery of indium has been widely studied to improve the resource efficiency of critical metals. However, the interaction and selective adsorption mechanism of indium/iron ions with tannin-based adsorbents is still unclear and hinders further optimization of their selective adsorption performance. In this study, the epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) monomer, which is the key functional unit of persimmon tannin, was chosen to explore the ability and mechanism of selective separation/extraction of indium from indium-iron mixture solutions. The density functional theory calculation results indicated that the deprotonated EGCG was easier to combine with indium/iron cations than those of un-deprotonated EGCG. Moreover, the interaction of the EGCG-Fe(III) complex was dominated by chelation and electrostatic interaction, while that of the EGCG-In(III) complex was controlled by electrostatic interactions and aromatic ring stacking effects. Furthermore, the calculation of binding energy verified that EGCG exhibited a stronger affinity for Fe(III) than that for In(III) and preferentially adsorbed iron ions in acidic or neutral solutions. Further experimental results were consistent with the theoretical study, which showed that the Freundlich equilibrium isotherm fit the In(III) and Fe(III) adsorption behavior very well, and the Fe(III) adsorption processes followed a pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamics data revealed that the adsorption of In(III) and Fe(III) onto EGCG was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic. The adsorption rate of the EGCG monomer for Fe(III) in neutral solution (1:1 mixed solution, pH = 3.0) was 45.7%, 4.3 times that of In(III) (10.7%). This study provides an in-depth understanding of the relationship between the structure of EGCG and the selective adsorption capacity at the molecular level and provides theoretical guidance for further optimization of the selective adsorption performance of structurally similar tannin-based adsorbents.

Supported Liquid Membranes Based on Bifunctional Ionic Liquids for Selective Recovery of Gallium

In this work, separation and recovery of gallium from aqueous solutions was examined using acid-base bifunctional ionic liquids (Bif-ILs) in both solvent extraction and supported liquid membrane (SLM) processes. The influence of a variety of parameters, such as feed acidity, extractant concentration and metal concentration on the solvent extraction behavior were evaluated. The slope method combined with FTIR spectroscopy was utilized to determine possible extraction mechanisms. The SLM containing Bif-ILs demonstrated highly selective facilitated transport of 96.2% Ga(III) from feed to stripping solution after optimization. During the evaluation of the separation performance of SLM for the transport of Ga(III), in the presence of Al(III), Mg(II), Cu(II) and Fe(II), 88.5% Ga(III) could be transported with only 6% Fe(II) and a nil quantity of other metals co-transported. SLM exhibited excellent long-time stability in five repeated transport cycles. Highly selective transport and separation performance was achieved using the SLM containing Bif-ILs, indicating considerable potential for application in Ga(III) recovery.

Application of Ionic Liquids for the Recycling and Recovery of Technologically Critical and Valuable Metals

Population growth has led to an increased demand for raw minerals and energy resources; however, their supply cannot easily be provided in the same proportions. Modern technologies contain materials that are becoming more finely intermixed because of the broadening palette of elements used, and this outcome creates certain limitations for recycling. The recovery and separation of individual elements, critical materials and valuable metals from complex systems requires complex energy-consuming solutions with many hazardous chemicals used. Significant pressure is brought to bear on the improvement of separation and recycling approaches by the need to balance sustainability, efficiency, and environmental impacts. Due to the increase in environmental consciousness in chemical research and industry, the challenge for a sustainable environment calls for clean procedures that avoid the use of harmful organic solvents. Ionic liquids, also known as molten salts and future solvents, are endowed with unique features that have already had a promising impact on cutting-edge science and technologies. This review aims to address the current challenges associated with the energy-efficient design, recovery, recycling, and separation of valuable metals employing ionic liquids.

Continuous Counter-Current Ionic Liquid Metathesis in Mixer-Settlers: Efficiency Analysis and Comparison with Batch Operation

Following the initial cation formation, the synthesis of ionic liquids (ILs) often involves an anion-exchange or metathesis reaction. For hydrophobic ILs, this is generally performed through several cross-current contacts of the IL with a fresh salt solution of the desired anion. However, if a large number of contacts is required to attain an adequate conversion, this procedure is not economical because of the large excess of the reagent that is consumed. In this study, the metathesis of an IL, Aliquat 336 or [A336][Cl], to ILs with other anions ([A336][X] with X = HSO4 -, Br-, NO3 -, I-, and SCN-) was studied in a continuous counter-current mixer-settler setup. McCabe-Thiele diagrams were constructed to estimate the required number of stages for quantitative conversion. Significantly higher IL conversions were achieved, combined with reduced reagent consumption and waste production. This improvement in efficiency was most pronounced for anions placed low in the Hofmeister series, for example, HSO4 -, Br-, and NO3 -, which are difficult to exchange. The performance of the counter-current experiments was compared with the conventional multistep cross-current batch process by calculating the reaction mass efficiency (RME) and the environmental factor (E-factor). The RMEs of the cross-current experiments were notably smaller, that is, 38-78% of the values observed for the counter-current experiments. The E-factors of the counter-current experiments were a factor of 2.0-6.8 smaller than those of the cross-current experiments. These sustainability metrics indicate a highly efficient reagent use and a considerable, simultaneous decrease in waste production for the counter-current IL metathesis reactions.

Highly efficient sorption of molybdenum from tungstate solution with modified D301 resin

The separation of molybdenum (Mo) from tungstate solution is a bottleneck problem in tungsten (W) metallurgy, and it hinders the development of high-purity tungsten materials. In this research, a modified D301 resin was used to adsorb and separate molybdenum from tungstate solution. The maximum sorption capacity (Q e) of modified D301 for MoS4 2- was found to be 428 mg g-1 and the separation coefficient (β) was 108.9 when the contact time was 4 h and the reaction temperature was 25 °C and the pH value of the tungstate solution was 7.2. The sorption process conforms to Langmuir isotherm models and the quasi-second-order kinetic model. The sorption mechanism was also discussed, which was a single layered spontaneous sorption process. Theoretical calculations infer bonding behavior between the N atom on the resin and the S atom on the MoS4 2- molecule. The sorption energy is -7.67 eV, which indicated that the sorption process is stable chemical sorption. The desorption experiment showed that more than 90% molybdenum could be desorbed from the loaded resin when the concentration of sodium hydroxide solution was 5 w%. Finally, after three-stage sorption-desorption, almost all molybdenum in the solution was adsorbed, achieving better separation of tungsten and molybdenum.

Toward the Recovery of Platinum Group Metals from a Spent Automotive Catalyst with Supported Ionic Liquid Phases

We present a novel approach for the separation and recovery of Pt and Pd leached from a spent automotive catalyst relying on conventional and polymerized supported ionic liquid phases (SILPs and polySILPs, respectively). A variety of parameters with possible effects on the separation behavior, namely, acidity and concentration of the platinum group metal (PGM) containing solution, as well as different SILP and polySILP loadings, were evaluated for the separation of PGMs in the presence of high concentrations of Al, Fe, Zn, and Ce. The polySILP material demonstrated the ability to separate the PGMs from major accompanying interferences in a single separation step, while problems arising from ionic liquid leaching in the case of SILPs could be avoided. Moreover, the use of supported ionic liquid phases allowed the drastic reduction of the amount of required ionic liquid compared to conventional liquid-liquid separation, while avoiding problems arising from emulsion formation. Subsequent stripping experiments lead to further purification of the PGMs and finally desorption from the solid material into a pure solution. Eventually, the concept of chemisorbed polySILPs provides a new and convenient approach for the recycling of platinum group metals.

Non-aqueous solvent extraction of indium from an ethylene glycol feed solution by the ionic liquid Cyphos IL 101: speciation study and continuous counter-current process in mixer-settlers

A solvometallurgical process for the separation of indium(iii) and zinc(ii) from ethylene glycol solutions using the ionic liquid extractants Cyphos IL 101 and Aliquat 336 in an aromatic diluent has been investigated. The speciation of indium(iii) in the two immiscible organic phases was investigated by Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, EXAFS and 115In NMR spectroscopy. At low LiCl concentrations in ethylene glycol, the bridging (InCl3)2(EG)3 or mononuclear (InCl3)(EG)2 complex is proposed. At higher lithium chloride concentrations, the first coordination sphere changes to two oxygen atoms from one bidentate ethylene glycol ligand and four chloride anions ([In(EG)Cl4]-). In the less polar phase, indium(iii) is present as a tetrahedral [InCl4]- complex independent of the LiCl concentration. After the number of theoretical stages had been determined using a McCabe-Thiele diagram for extraction by Cyphos IL 101, the extraction and scrubbing processes were performed in lab-scale mixer-settlers to test the feasibility of working in continuous mode. Indium(iii) was extracted quantitatively in four stages, with 19% co-extraction of zinc(ii). The co-extracted zinc(ii) was scrubbed selectively in six stages using an indium(iii) scrub solution. Indium(iii) was recovered from the loaded less polar organic phase as indium(iii) hydroxide (98.5%) by precipitation stripping with an aqueous NaOH solution.

Selective recovery of zinc from goethite residue in the zinc industry using deep-eutectic solvents

Several deep-eutectic solvents (DESs) were tested for the valorisation of goethite residue produced by the zinc industry. The objective of the work was to selectively recover zinc from the iron-rich matrix using deep-eutectic solvents as lixiviants. The effect of the type of hydrogen bond donor and hydrogen bond acceptor of the deep-eutectic solvent on the leaching efficiency was studied. Levulinic acid-choline chloride (x ChCl = 0.33) (LevA-ChCl) could selectively leach zinc from the iron-rich matrix, and it was selected as the best-performing system to be used in further study. The leaching process was optimised in terms of temperature, contact time, liquid-to-solid ratio and water content of the deep-eutectic solvent. The role of the choline cation on the leaching process was investigated by considering the leaching properties of a LevA-CaCl2 mixture. The goethite residue was also leached with pure levulinic acid. The results were compared to a purely hydrometallurgical approach using sulphuric acid leaching. Leaching with LevA-ChCl resulted in higher selectivity compared to the conventional "hot leaching" with 80 g L-1 sulphuric acid. Furthermore, a slightly higher zinc recovery and comparable selectivity for zinc over iron were achieved with LevA-ChCl compared to conventional "neutral leaching" with 10 g L-1 sulphuric acid.
