The bromate formation accompanied by the degradation of 2,4-bromophenol in UV/peroxymonosulfate

Enhanced permanganate oxidation of phenolic pollutants by alumina and potential industrial application

In this study, we found that alumina (Al2O3) may improve the degradation of phenolic pollutants by KMnO4 oxidation. In KMnO4/Al2O3 system, the removal efficiency of 2,4-Dibromophenol (2,4-DBP) was increased by 26.5%, and the apparent activation energy was decreased from 44.5 kJ/mol to 30.9 kJ/mol. The mechanism of Al2O3-catalytic was elucidated by electrochemical processes, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization and theoretical analysis that the oxidation potential of MnO4- was improved from 0.46 V to 0.49 V. The improvement was attributed to the formation of coordination bonds between the O atoms in MnO4- and the empty P orbitals of the Al atoms in Al2O3 crystal leading to the even-more electron deficient state of MnO4-. The excellent reusability of Al2O3, the good performance on degradation of 2,4-DBP in real water, the satisfactory degradation of fixed-bed reactor, and the enhanced removal of 6 other phenolic pollutants demonstrated that the KMnO4/Al2O3 system has satisfactory potential industrial application value. This study offers evidence for the improvement of highly-efficient MnO4- oxidation systems.

Revisiting UV/sulfite exposed to air: A redox process for reductive dechlorination and oxidative mineralization

2,4-Dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) widely exists in many industrial wastewaters and is considered a priority pollutant due to its high toxicity. In this work, we proposed a UV/sulfite process without aeration for high-efficiency dechlorination and enhanced mineralization. The UV/sulfite system significantly improved the removal of 2,4-DCP (93.33 % in 60 min) and dechlorination rate (85.13 % in 60 min) compared with UV alone and sulfite alone, and the synergistic factor was 6.59. The UV/sulfite system without aeration improved the mineralization rate (49.80 %) compared with the nitrogen aeration system. UV/sulfite was a reduction-oxidation coupled process and was more suitable for neutral and alkaline conditions. Reducing species (hydrated electrons and H^•) made 2,4-DCP dechlorinate to form dechlorination products such as p-chlorophenol (4-CP), o-chlorophenol (2-CP), and phenol, which were further mineralized by oxidized species (SO₄^•-). UV/sulfite remained highly efficient in the presence of coexisting ions and under different water quality conditions. This process was also suitable for removing a wide range of chlorinated organic compounds. The UV/sulfite process without aeration can achieve high dechlorination and enhanced mineralization with simple operation and low cost (1.78 $·m^-3 order^-1), which has a broad and cost-effective application prospect in removing refractory halogenated organic pollutants.

Comparison of UV/H2O2, UV/PMS, and UV/PDS in Destruction of Different Reactivity Compounds and Formation of Bromate and Chlorate

In this study, we compared the decontamination kinetics of various target compounds and the oxidation by-products (bromate and chlorate) of PMS, PDS, and H₂O₂ under UV irradiation (UV/PMS, UV/PDS, UV/H₂O₂). Probes of different reactivity with hydroxyl and sulfate radicals, such as benzoic acid (BA), nitrobenzene (NB), and trichloromethane (TCM), were selected to compare the decontamination efficiency of the three oxidation systems. Experiments were performed under acidic, neutral, and alkaline pH conditions to obtain a full-scale comparison of UV/peroxides. Furthermore, the decontamination efficiency was also compared in the presence of common radical scavengers in water bodies [bicarbonate, carbonate, and natural organic matter (NOM)]. Finally, the formation of oxidation by-products, bromate, and chlorate, was also monitored in comparison in pure water and tap water. Results showed that UV/H₂O₂ showed higher decontamination efficiency than UV/PDS and UV/PMS for BA degradation while UV/H₂O₂ and UV/PMS showed better decontamination performance than UV/PDS for NB degradation under acidic and neutral conditions. UV/PMS was the most efficient among the three processes for BA and NB degradation under alkaline conditions, while UV/PDS was the most efficient for TCM degradation under all pH conditions. In pure water, both bromate and chlorate were formed in UV/PDS, small amounts of bromate and rare chlorate were observed in UV/PMS, and no detectable bromate and chlorate were formed in UV/H₂O_2. In tap water, no bromate and chlorate were detectable for all three systems.

Formation and control of bromate in sulfate radical-based oxidation processes for the treatment of waters containing bromide: A critical review

Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) show a good prospect for effective elimination of organic contaminants in water due to the powerful oxidation capability and good adaptability of sulfate radical (SO₄^•-). However, great concerns have been raised on occurrence of the carcinogenic byproduct bromate (BrO₃^-) in SR-AOPs. The present article aims to provide a critical review on BrO₃^- formation during bromine (Br)-containing water oxidation by various SR-AOPs. Potential reaction mechanisms are elaborated, mainly involving the sequential oxidation of bromide (Br^-) by SO₄^•- to Br-containing radicals (e.g., bromine atom (Br•)) and then to hypobromous acid/hypobromite (HOBr/OBr^-), which acts as the requisite intermediate for BrO₃^- formation. Some key influencing factors on BrO₃^- formation are discussed. Particularly, dissolved organic matter (DOM) as a component ubiquitously present in aquatic environments shows a significant suppression effect on BrO₃^- formation, primarily attributed to the reduction of Br• by DOM to Br^-. The reaction of Br• with DOM can hardly produce organic brominated byproducts, while their formation is mainly due to the bromination of HOBr/OBr^- generated through nonradical pathways such as the direct reaction of Br^- with oxidants (e.g., peroxymonosulfate (PMS)) or other reactive species derived from catalytic activators (e.g., Co(III) in the Co(II)/PMS process). The debromination of brominated pollutants during their oxidation by SO₄^•- results in the release of Br^-, which, however, is not further transformed to BrO₃^- until coexisting organic matters are mineralized nearly completely. Furthermore, possible strategies for control of BrO₃^- formation in SR-AOPs as well as the future research needs are proposed.
