Abstract
Oil/water separation has become a global concern due to the increasing discharge of multi-component harmful oily wastewater. Super wetting membranes have been shown to be an effective material for oil/water separation. Ultra-high flux stainless-steel meshes (SSM) with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity were fabricated by tannic acid (TA) modified ZIF-8 nanoparticles (TZIF-8) and two-dimensional MXene materials for oil/water separation. The TZIF-8 increased the interlayer space of MXene, enhancing the flux permeation (69,093 L m-2h-1) and rejection of the composite membrane (TZIF-8@MXene/SSM). The TZIF-8@MXene/SSM membrane showed an underwater oil contact angle of 154.2°. The membrane maintained underwater superoleophobic after stability and durability tests, including various pH solutions, organic solvents, reusability, etc. In addition, the oil/water separation efficiency of TZIF-8@MXene/SSM membranes was higher than 99% after treatment in harsh conditions and recycling. The outstanding anti-fouling, stability, durability, and recyclability properties of TZIF-8@MXene/SSM membrane highlight the remarkable potential of membranes for complex oil/water separation process.

Abstract
Electrospinning nanofibers membrane has received much attention to remove the insoluble oil from the sewage, while the poor mechanical strength and low oil/water separation efficiency of membranes limit their practical application. Here, we prepared a superwettable deacetylated cellulose acetate (d-CA)-based electrospinning nanofibers membrane simply dipped by bacterial cellulose (BC) and cross-linked with citric acid (CCA) to construct the spider-web structure spontaneously. Compared with the pristine d-CA membrane, the obtained d-CA/BC@CCA membrane exhibits the remarkable oil/water separation performance. The flux and separation efficiency of n-hexane/water emulsion without (SFE) and with (SSE) emulsifier for d-CA/BC@CCA membrane are 9364 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1, 98.34 % and 5479 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1, 99.39 %, respectively, which are mainly attributed to the improved hydrophilicity of its surface and the decreased pore sizes caused by the unique spider-web structure. In addition, d-CA/BC@CCA membrane also possesses the outstanding mechanical properties, the better cycle stability, as well as the excellent durability. This study provides a novel strategy for the construction of the high-performance oil/water separation membrane.

Abstract
Different membrane materials have broadly been constructed for oil-containing water separation, but most of preparation routes involve corrosive or toxic chemicals and especially many materials have only single superwetting property. Herein, a novel and eco-friendly cellulose-based textile membrane is developed by incorporating the composite coating consisting of arabic gum (AG), attapulgite (APT), and iron (Fe) onto cellulose textiles. The functionalized textile is superoleophobic underwater and superhydrophobic underoil. As a result, the textile prewetted with water or oil can be employed to separate light oil layer/water and heavy oil layer/water mixtures, respectively, and the separation efficiency to the two types of mixtures is larger than 98.3 %. Results also reveal that the decorated textile possesses superior stability and recyclability in purifying oily wastewater. More importantly, such coated textile is capable of filtrating water-soluble contaminants (dyes) from polluted water. Due to the versatility and environmental compatibility of product as well as the accessibility as agricultural and forestry product as raw materials, the advanced textiles may offer effective solutions to oily wastewater purification and water-soluble contaminant removal.

Abstract
Fabricating filtration membranes with wide applicability and high efficiency is always a challenge in the precise separation of small colloidal particles under mild conditions. For this purpose, a strategy mixing supramolecular framework fiber with polymer is adopted. The fibrous assembly in the gel state provides uniform nanopores for both channel and interception and controlled wettability for lyophilic/lyophobic switching. The used polymer fills the gaps between fiber assemblies and improves the mechanical property. The composite membrane shows both under-oil superhydrophobic and underwater superoleophobic nature, which allows the conversions via in situ modulation of joystick solvents. Based on surface wetting and size-sieving, ultrafine hard nanoparticles dispersing in both hydrophobic organic solvents and water are selectively sieved. In addition, on-demand separation of water-in-oil and oil-in-water microemulsions without and with surfactants as systems containing soft droplets are realized. The smallest cut-off size of ≈3 nm is achieved for both hard and soft emulsions, while separation efficiency maintains during sustained in situ reversible switches.

Abstract
Oily water purification, immiscible solvent separation, sensitive microreaction, and CO2 blockage are of great interest because of their importance for the environment and demands of controllable microreactions. However, one specific material that can meet all the requirements has yet to be reported. Herein, we developed a simple environment-benign method to prepare specific dual superlyophobic materials to solve the problems mentioned earlier. The dual superlyophobic materials can maintain their dual superoleophobicity in various oil/water systems, and no additional surface modifications were required when the oil/water system was changed. Moreover, the materials can be used to separate oil/water mixtures with separation efficiencies greater than 99.50% even after 40 separation cycles and separate immiscible organic solvents with efficiencies over than 99.25% after 20 cycles. Separations of meal waste oily water at 60 °C and crude oil/water were also successfully performed. The materials can be further applied to manipulate and block CO2 bubbles under liquid. The materials can also act as a platform for microdrop manipulation/microreaction under liquid.

Abstract
Thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes are emerging water-purification membranes that could provide enhanced water permeance with similar solute removal over traditional thin-film composite (TFC) membranes. However, the effects of nanofiller incorporation on active layer physico-chemical properties have not been comprehensively studied. Accordingly, we aimed to understand the correlation between nanofillers, active layer physico-chemical properties, and membrane performance by investigating whether observed performance differences between TFN and control TFC membranes correlated with observed differences in physico-chemical properties. The effects of nanofiller loading, surface area, and size on membrane performance, along with active layer physico-chemical properties, were characterized in TFN membranes incorporated with Linde Type A (LTA) zeolite and zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8). Results show that nanofiller incorporation up to ~0.15 wt% resulted in higher water permeance and unchanged salt rejection, above which salt rejection decreased 0.9-25.6% and 26.1-48.3% for LTA-TFN and ZIF-8-TFN membranes, respectively. Observed changes in active layer physico-chemical properties were generally unsubstantial and did not explain observed changes in TFN membrane performance. Therefore, increased water permeance in TFN membranes could be due to preferential water transport through porous structures of nanofillers or along polymer-nanofiller interfaces. These findings offer new insights into the development of high-performance TFN membranes for water/ion separations.

Abstract
Since superwetting surfaces have emerged, on-demand oil/water separation materials serve as a new direction for meeting practical needs. This new separation mode uses a single porous material to allow oil-removing and water-removing to be achieved alternately. In this review, the fundamentals of wettability are systematically summarized in oil/water separation. Most importantly, the two states, bioinspired surface and intelligent surface, are summarized for on-demand oil/water separation. Specifically, bioinspired surfaces include micro/nanostructures, bioinspired chemistry, Janus-featured surfaces, and dual-superlyophobic surfaces that these superwetting materials can possess asymmetric wettability in one structure system or opposite underliquid wettability by prewetting. Furthermore, an intelligent surface can be adopted by various triggers such as pH, thermal and photo stimuli, etc., to control wettability for switchable oil/water separation reversibly, expressing a thought beyond nature to realize innovative oil/water separation by external stimuli. Remarkably, this review also discusses the advantages of all the materials mentioned above, expanding the separation scope from the on-demand oil/water mixtures to the multiphase immiscible liquid-liquid mixtures. Finally, the prospects of on-demand oil/water separation materials are also concluded.

Abstract
Superhydrophobic materials have been widely applied in rapid removal and collection of oils from oil/water mixtures for increasing damage to environment and human beings caused by oil-contaminated wastewater and oil spills. Herein, superhydrophobic materials were fabricated by a novel polypyrrole (PPy)/ZnO coating followed by hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) modification for versatile oil/water separation with high environmental and excellent reusability. The prepared superhydrophobic surfaces exhibited water contact angle (WCA) greater than 150° and SA less than 5°. The superhydrophobic fabric could be applied for separation of heavy oil or light oil/water mixtures and emulsions with the separation efficiencies above 98%. The coated fabric also realized highly efficient separation with harsh environmental solutions, such as acid, alkali, salt, and hot water. The superhydrophobic fabric still remained, even after 80 cycles of separation and 12 months of storage in air, proving excellent durability. These novel superhydrophobic materials have indicated great development potentials for oil/water separation in practical applications.

Abstract
Separation and purification of surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water nanoemulsions is a great environmental challenge. Membrane-based separation strategies are more effective over conventional methods in the treatment of nanoemulsion waste water. In this paper, we construct a superhydrophilic membrane by coating a thin photothermal-responsive iron tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (Fe-TCPP) nanofibrous metal organic framework (MOF) selective layer on a macroporous polyethersulfone membrane. The as-prepared membrane exhibits high separation performance of oil-in-water nanoemulsions with permeance of 46.4 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1 and separation efficiency of 99%. It also demonstrates nice anti-oil/ionic-fouling property, good recyclability, and desirable stability. The high separation performance is accredited to the superhydrophilicity, highly charged surface, and nanometer pore sizes of the Fe-TCPP nanofibrous membrane. Due to the unique photothermal property of Fe-TCPP nanofibers, the permeance can be enhanced more than 50% by visible light without deteriorating the rejection. This photo-stimuli MOF-based thin-layer membrane offers great potential for the generation of point-of-use water treatment devices.

Abstract
In view of the importance of water quality and environmental aspect, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) adsorbent was synthesized via a solvothermal approach for oil removal from water. Response surface methodology-central composite design approach (RSM-CCD) using a statistical software (Design expert, version 8.0.6) was employed to identify the influence of three independent variables of ZIF-8 synthesis procedure including ligand/salt molar ratio, solvent/salt molar ratio, and synthesis temperature on the oil adsorption capacity and yield of adsorbent as RSM responses. The optimum conditions for preparing ZIF-8 were found as follows: ligand/salt molar ratio of 10.4, solvent/salt ratio of 702.7, and temperature of 52.9 °C, which resulted in 1120 mg/g of olive oil uptake and 43% of ZIF-8 yield. Morphological and structural properties of the prepared adsorbent were characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption, XRD, FE-SEM, and FTIR analyses. Batch equilibrium adsorption experiments were conducted under varied system parameters expected to affect the ZIF-8 adsorption capacity including oil concentration, ZIF-8 dosage, contact time, and temperature. The isotherm and kinetic of olive oil adsorption onto ZIF-8 followed the Freundlich and pseudo-first-order models, respectively. The evaluation of thermodynamic parameters demonstrated that olive oil adsorption onto optimized ZIF-8 was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. In addition, the used ZIF-8 can be recovered effectively using a simple ethanol-washing method. Based on experimental results, the ZIF-8 prepared in this study can be successfully used in oil/water emulsion separation.

Abstract
Porous Al2O3 membranes were prepared through a phase-inversion tape casting/sintering method. The alumina membranes were embedded with finger-like pores perpendicular to the membrane surface. Bare alumina membranes are naturally hydrophilic and underwater oleophobic, while fluoroalkylsilane (FAS)-grafted membranes are hydrophobic and oleophilic. The coupling of FAS molecules on alumina surfaces was confirmed by Thermogravimetric Analysis and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy measurements. The hydrophobic membranes exhibited desired thermal stability and were super durable when exposed to air. Both membranes can be used for gravity-driven oil/water separation, which is highly cost-effective. The as-calculated separation efficiency (R) was above 99% for the FAS-grafted alumina membrane. Due to the excellent oil/water separation performance and good chemical stability, the porous ceramic membranes display potential for practical applications.
