Effect of phosphoric acid additive on the electrolyte of all-vanadium flow batteries

A phosphoric acid additive with an optimal concentration of 0.1 M can vastly promote the diffusion kinetics of the redox reaction between V(IV) and V(V) without a significant decline in energy efficiency for 300 cycles, and maintain the high-temperature stability (55 °C) of an electrolyte at a high state of charge (SOC) of 70% over the course of 30 days.

Bis-Catecholamide-Based Materials for Uranium Extraction

This work reports the synthesis of formo-phenolic resins containing four catecholamide (CAM) moieties with admixture of phenol, catechol or resorcinol. These chelating resins have been developed to selectively extract U(VI) from seawater. This media is a challenging environment due to a pH around 8.2 and a large excess of alkaline and earth-alkaline cations. From the various sorption experiments investigated, the results indicate that the synthesized material exhibit good sorbent properties for U(VI) with uptake capacity about 50 mg/g for the more promising resins with a pronounced selectivity for uranium even under saline conditions. Thermodynamic and kinetic adsorption data were determined for the best resin (Langmuir adsorption model and pseudo-second order model).

Terephthalaldehyde-Phenolic Resins as a Solid-Phase Extraction System for the Recovery of Rare-Earth Elements

Rare-earth elements (REEs) are involved in most high technology devices and have become critical for many countries. The progress of processes for the extraction and recovery of REEs is therefore essential. Liquid–solid extraction methods are an attractive alternative to the conventional solvent extraction process used for the separation and/or purification of REEs. For this purpose, a solid-phase extraction system was investigated for the extraction and valorization of REEs. Ion-exchange resins were synthesized involving the condensation of terephthalaldehyde with resorcinol under alkaline conditions. The terephthalaldehyde, which is a non-hazardous aromatic dialdehyde, was used as an alternative to formaldehyde that is toxic and traditionally involved to prepare phenolic ion-exchange resins. The resulting formaldehyde-free resole-type phenolic resins were characterized and their ion-exchange capacity was investigated in regard to the extraction of rare-earth elements. We herein present a promising formaldehyde and phenol-free as a potential candidate for solid–liquid extraction REE with a capacity higher than 50 mg/g and the possibility to back-extract the REEs by a striping step using a 2 M HNO₃ solution.

Phosphorous-functionalized PAMAM dendrimers supported on mesoporous silica for Zr(iv) and Hf(iv) separation

To overcome the urgency of zirconium and hafnium separation, a novel mesoporous silica sorbent (PS-G1.0-MSNs) modified with phosphorous-functionalized G1.0 PAMAM dendrimers was prepared. The adsorption and separation behaviors of PS-G1.0-MSNs adsorbent on Zr(iv) and Hf(iv) were perfromed as a function of acidity, contact time, temperature, and ion concentrations by batch sorption methods. The maximum adsorption capacities for Zr(iv) and Hf(iv) were 25.7 mg g⁻¹ and 5.36 mg g⁻¹ under optimal experimental conditions, respectively, and the separation factor β_Hf/Zr = 2.0 > 1 demonstrated that the prepared sorbent had preferential selectivity for Hf(iv) in rich Zr(iv) solution. Moreover, kinetic data indicated that the sorption process on Zr(iv) and Hf(iv) achieved equilibrium within 120 min, and followed the pseudo-first-order model with a rate-determining step. The adsorption amount increased as temperature raised from 283 K to 303 K and the isothermal data plotted with the Langmuir model was better than the Freundlich model with monolayer behavior. Thermodynamic data analysis indicated that the sorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, XPS analysis revealed that the metal ion adsorption was mainly induced by the chemical coordination of Zr(iv) and Hf(iv) ions with N, O, P atoms of amide and phosphate groups. The present work provides good guidelines on the design of high efficient sorbent for the separation of Hf(iv) from Zr(iv) solutions.
