Electrochemical filtration carbon membrane derived from coal for wastewater treatment: Insights into the evolution of electrical conductivity and electrochemical performance during carbonization

Effects of clean fracturing fluids on coal microstructure and coalbed gas adsorption

Nowadays, some fracking fluids can enable resourceful extraction of coalbed methane and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, their toxicity or corrosiveness will cause harm to downhole workers and pollute groundwater resources. Thus, five kinds of clean composite fracturing fluids were developed in this paper by using starch solution as the matrix and adding various preparations. The change rule of methane adsorption capacity by microstructure changes of coal samples was investigated systematically, and the optimal composite fracturing fluid was determined. The results showed that the new fracturing fluid increased the degree of aromatic ring condensation by 43.3% and the average pore size by 52.1%. Also, the adsorption constants of a value decreased by 11.6% and b value decreased by 23.9%, which can remarkably reduce the methane adsorption. The experimental results provide theoretical support for the clean production of coalbed methane.

Carbon electrochemical membrane functionalized with flower cluster-like FeOOH catalyst for organic pollutants decontamination

Decorating active catalysts on the reactive electrochemical membrane (REM) is an effective way to further improve its decontamination performance. In this work, a novel carbon electrochemical membrane (FCM-30) was prepared through coating FeOOH nano catalyst on a low-cost coal-based carbon membrane (CM) through facile and green electrochemical deposition. Structural characterizations demonstrated that the FeOOH catalyst was successfully coated on CM, and it grew into a flower cluster-like morphology with abundant active sites when the deposition time was 30 min. The nano FeOOH flower clusters can obviously boost the hydrophilicity and electrochemical performance of FCM-30, which enhance its permeability and bisphenol A (BPA) removal efficiency during the electrochemical treatment. Effects of applied voltages, flow rates, electrolyte concentrations and water matrixes on BPA removal efficiency were investigated systematically. Under the operation condition of 2.0 V applied voltage and 2.0 mL·min^-1 flow rate, FCM-30 can achieve the high removal efficiency of 93.24% and 82.71% for BPA and chemical oxygen demand (COD) (71.01% and 54.89% for CM), respectively, with only a low energy consumption (EC) of 0.41 kWh·kgCOD^-1, which can be ascribed to the enhancement on OH yield and direct oxidation ability by the FeOOH catalyst. Moreover, this treatment system also exhibits good reusability and can be adopted on different water background as well as different pollutants.

A novel conductive carbon-based forward osmosis membrane for dye wastewater treatment

Forward osmosis (FO) membrane fouling is one of the main reasons that hinder the further application of FO technology in the treatment of dye wastewater. To alleviate membrane fouling, a conductive coal carbon-based substrate and polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NPs) interlayer composite FO membrane (CPFO) was prepared by interfacial polymerization (IP). CPFO-10 membrane prepared by depositing 10 mL of PDA NPs solution exhibited an optimum performance with water flux of 7.56 L/(m²h) for FO mode and 10.75 L/(m²h) for pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) mode, respectively. For rhodamine B and chrome black T dye wastewater treatment, the water flux losses were reduced by 21.6%, and 14.5% under the voltages of +1.5 V, and -1.5 V, respectively, compared with no voltage applied after the device was operated for 8 h. The applied voltage had little effect on the fouling mitigation performance of the CPFO membrane for neutral charged cresol red. After the device was operated for 4 cycles, the rejection rates of dyes wastewater treated by the CPFO membranes with applied voltage were close to 100%. The flux decline rate and flux recovery rate of CPFO membrane for rhodamine B and chrome black T wastewater treatment under application of +1.5 V and -1.5 V voltage after 4 cycles were 11.6%, 99.2%, and 16.7%, 98.9%, respectively. Therefore, the voltage-applied CPFO membrane still maintained good rejection and antifouling performance in long-term operation. This study provides a new insight into the preparation of conductive FO membranes for dye wastewater treatment and membrane fouling control.

A critical review on classifications, characteristics, and applications of electrically conductive membranes for toxic pollutant removal from water: Comparison between composite and inorganic electrically conductive membranes

Research efforts have recently been directed at developing electrically conductive membranes (EMs) for pressure-driven membrane separation processes to remove effectively the highly toxic pollutants from water. EMs serve as both the filter and the electrode during filtration. With the assistance of a power supply, EMs can considerably improve the toxic pollutant removal efficiency and even realize chemical degradation to reduce their toxicity. Organic-inorganic composite EMs and inorganic EMs show remarkable differences in characteristics, removal mechanisms, and application situations. Understanding their differences is highly important to guide the future design of EMs for specific pollutant removal from water. However, reviews concerning the differences between composite and inorganic EMs are still lacking. In this review, we summarize the classifications, fabrication techniques, and characteristics of composite and inorganic EMs. We also elaborate on the removal mechanisms and performances of EMs toward recalcitrant organic pollutants and toxic inorganic ions in water. The comparison between composite and inorganic EMs is emphasized particularly in terms of the membrane characteristics (pore size, permeability, and electrical conductivity), application situations, and underlying removal mechanisms. Finally, the energy consumption and durability of EMs are evaluated, and future perspectives are presented.

Electrochemical advanced oxidation processes coupled with membrane filtration for degrading antibiotic residues: A review on its potential applications, advances, and challenges

Antibiotic pollution is mainly caused by aquaculture wastewater and pharmaceuticals, which are frequently used by humans. Due to limited treatment efficiency or improper selection of treatment methods, these antibiotic residues may be very harmful in human drinking water and aquatic environments. The EAOPs coupling membrane technology (EAOPs-membrane) can play their own advantages, which can significantly improve the degradation efficiency and alleviate membrane pollution (electrochemical manners). In this context, this review mainly collecting researches and information on EAOPs-membrane treatment of antibiotic pollution published between 2012 and 2020. Discussed the different combinations of these two technologies, the mechanism of them in the system to improve the processing efficiency, prolong the working time, and stabilize the system structure. Mainly due to the synergistic effect of electrochemical behavior such as electric repulsion and in-situ oxidation, the membrane fouling in the system is alleviated. In this review it was summarized that the selection of different membrane electrode materials and their modifications. The paper also elaborates the existing challenges facing the EAOPs-membrane methods for antibiotic pollution treatment, and their prospects.

In-situ synthesis of CuS@carbon nanocomposites and application in enhanced photo-fenton degradation of 2,4-DCP

Novel CuS nanoparticles embedded into carbon nanosheets (CuS@CNs) were prepared in situ by applying wheat straw cellulose/feather protein hydrogel beads as templates and were used to photocatalytically activate H₂O₂ to degrade 2,4-dichlorphenol (2,4-DCP). The photo-Fenton catalytic properties of the nanocomposite catalysts obtained under different synthetic conditions, including different Cu²⁺ concentrations, S^2- concentrations and calcination temperatures, were evaluated. The results showed that CuS@CNs with 0.1 M Cu²⁺, 0.1 M S^2- at 800 °C presented excellent photo-Fenton degradation performance for 2,4-DCP (25 mg/L) in the presence of H₂O₂ and could remove 90% of 2,4-DCP in 2.5 h. The water quality parameters (pH, Cl^-, HCO₃^-, H₂PO₄^- and SO₄^2-) exhibited different effects on the photocatalytic degradation process. The catalytic activity of the CuS@CNs used in the cycle could be recovered after thermal regeneration. Radical quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments confirmed that ·OH species were main active radicals contributing to the degradation of 2,4-DCP. The photocatalytic mechanism of CuS@CNs was also explored by photoelectrochemical (PEC) measurements and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Incorporation of carbon nanosheets could significantly improve the separation of photogenerated charge carriers to stimulate pollutant degradation by CuS. Based on the detected intermediates, the degradation pathway of 2,4-DCP in the CuS@CNs/H₂O₂ reaction system was also proposed.
