Stimulating anaerobic digestion to degrade recalcitrant organic pollutants: Potential role of conductive materials-led direct interspecies electron transfer

This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the potential of CMs-dominated DIET in the degradation of recalcitrant organic pollutants in AD. The review covers the mechanisms and efficiencies of recalcitrant organic pollutant degradation by CMs-dominated DIET, the comparison of degradation pathways between DIET and chemical treatment, recent insights on DIET-enhanced degradation, and the evaluation of the potential and future development of CMs-dominated DIET. The review emphasizes the importance of coupled syntrophic microorganisms, electron flux, and physicochemical properties of CMs in enhancing the degradation performance of AD. Additionally, it highlights the advantages of DIET-led syntrophic metabolism over traditional oxidation technologies in terms of environmental friendliness and efficiency. Finally, the review acknowledges the potential risks associated with introducing CMs into AD systems and provides guidance for waste treatment and energy recovery.

Oxygen doped graphite carbon nitride as efficient metal-free catalyst for peroxymonosulfate activation: Performance, mechanism and theoretical calculation

In this study, oxygen-doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), named O-g-C3N4, was successfully fabricated and characterized, and its performance in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS, HSO5-) for the removal of phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), bisphenol A (BPA), rhodamine B (RhB), reactive brilliant blue (RBB) and acid orange 7 (AO7) was evaluated. The catalytic performance of O-g-C3N4 for AO7 removal increased by 14 times compared to g-C3N4. In the presence of 0.2 g L-1 O-g-C3N4, 3.5 mM PMS at natural pH 5.8, 96.4% of AO7 could be removed in 60 min, reduced toxicity of the treated AO7 solution was obtained, and the mineralization efficiency was 47.2% within 120 min. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the charge distribution changed after oxygen doping, and PMS was more readily adsorbed by O-g-C3N4 with the adsorption energy (Eads) of -0.855 kcal/mol than that of the pristine g-C3N4 (Eads: -0.305 kcal/mol). Mechanism investigation implied that AO7 was primarily removed by the sulfate radicals (SO4•-) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) on the surface of O-g-C3N4, but the role of singlet oxygen (1O2) to AO7 elimination was negligible. The results of cyclic experiments and catalyst characterization after reaction confirmed the favorable catalytic activity and structural stability of O-g-C3N4 particles. Furthermore, the O-g-C3N4/PMS system was very resistant to most of the environmental impacts, and AO7 removal was still acceptable in natural water environment. This study may provide an efficient metal-free carbonaceous activator with low dosage for PMS activation to remove recalcitrant organic pollutants (ROPs).

A critical review on classifications, characteristics, and applications of electrically conductive membranes for toxic pollutant removal from water: Comparison between composite and inorganic electrically conductive membranes

Research efforts have recently been directed at developing electrically conductive membranes (EMs) for pressure-driven membrane separation processes to remove effectively the highly toxic pollutants from water. EMs serve as both the filter and the electrode during filtration. With the assistance of a power supply, EMs can considerably improve the toxic pollutant removal efficiency and even realize chemical degradation to reduce their toxicity. Organic-inorganic composite EMs and inorganic EMs show remarkable differences in characteristics, removal mechanisms, and application situations. Understanding their differences is highly important to guide the future design of EMs for specific pollutant removal from water. However, reviews concerning the differences between composite and inorganic EMs are still lacking. In this review, we summarize the classifications, fabrication techniques, and characteristics of composite and inorganic EMs. We also elaborate on the removal mechanisms and performances of EMs toward recalcitrant organic pollutants and toxic inorganic ions in water. The comparison between composite and inorganic EMs is emphasized particularly in terms of the membrane characteristics (pore size, permeability, and electrical conductivity), application situations, and underlying removal mechanisms. Finally, the energy consumption and durability of EMs are evaluated, and future perspectives are presented.

Stimulation of pyrolytic carbon materials as electron shuttles on the anaerobic transformation of recalcitrant organic pollutants: A review

Pyrolytic carbon materials (PCMs) with various surface functionalities are widely used as environmentally friendly and cost-efficient adsorbents for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants. Recent studies have illustrated that PCMs as electron shuttles (ESs) could also show excellent performances in promoting the anaerobic transformation of recalcitrant organic pollutants (ROPs). Numerous studies have demonstrated the excellent electron-shuttle capability (ESC) of PCMs to stimulate the anaerobic reductive transformation of ROPs. However, there is a lack of consistent understanding of the mechanism of ESC formation in PCMs and the stimulation mechanism for ROPs anaerobic transformation. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the latest developments in the study of PCMs as ESs for ROPs anaerobic transformation, this review summarizes the formation mechanism, influencing factors, and stimulation mechanisms of ESC. ESC benefits from redox functional groups (quinone and phenol groups), persistent free radicals (PFRs), redox-active metal ions, conductive graphene phase, and porous nature of their surface. The factors influencing ESC include the highest treatment temperature (HTT), feedstocks, modification methods, and environmental conditions, of which, the HTT is the key factor. PCMs promote the reductive transformation of ROPs under anaerobic conditions via abiotic and biotic pathways. Eventually, the prospects for the ROPs anaerobic transformation enhanced by PCMs are proposed.

Application of microbial electrochemical technologies for the treatment of petrochemical wastewater with concomitant valuable recovery: A review

Petrochemical industry is one of the major and rapidly growing industry that generates a variety of toxic and recalcitrant organic pollutants as by-products, which are not only harmful to the aquatic animals but also affects human health. The majority of the components of petrochemical wastewater (PW) are carcinogenic, genotoxic and phytotoxic in nature; hence, this complex wastewater generated from different petrochemical processes should be efficiently treated prior to its disposal in natural water bodies. The established technologies like advanced oxidation, membrane bioreactor, electrocoagulation and activated sludge process employed for the treatment of PW are highly energy intensive and incurs high capital and operation cost. Moreover, these technologies are not effective in completely eliminating petroleum hydrocarbons present in PW. Thus, to reduce the energy requirement and also to transform the chemical energy trapped in these organic matters present in this wastewater into bioelectricity and other value-added products, microbial electrochemical technologies (METs) can be efficaciously used, which would also compensate the treatment cost by transforming these pollutants into bioenergy and valuables. In this regard, this review elucidates the feasibility and application of different METs as an appropriate alternative for the treatment of PW. Furthermore, the numerous bottlenecks towards the real-life application and commercialization of pioneering METs have also been articulated.

Aerobic granular sludge inoculated microbial fuel cells for enhanced epoxy reactive diluent wastewater treatment

Microbial consortiums aggregated on the anode surface of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are critical factors for electricity generation as well as biodegradation efficiencies of organic compounds. Here in this study, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) was assembled on the surface of the MFC anode to form an AGS-MFC system with superior performance on epoxy reactive diluent (ERD) wastewater treatment. AGS-MFCs successfully shortened the startup time from 13d to 7d compared to the ones inoculated with domestic wastewater. Enhanced toxicity tolerance as well as higher COD removal (77.8% vs. 63.6%) were achieved. The higher ERD wastewater treatment efficiency of AGS-MFC is possibly attributed to the diverse microbial population on MFC biofilm, as well as the synergic degradation of contaminants by both the MFC anode biofilm and AGS granules.

Photocatalytic degradation of recalcitrant organic pollutants in water using a novel cylindrical multi-column photoreactor packed with TiO2-coated silica gel beads

A novel cylindrical multi-column photocatalytic reactor (CMCPR) has been developed and successfully applied for the degradation of methyl orange (MO), amoxicillin (AMX) and 3-chlorophenol (3-CP) in water. Due to its higher adsorption capacity and simpler molecular structure, 3-CP compared with MO and AMX obtained the highest photodegradation (100%) and mineralization (78.1%) after 300-min photocatalytic reaction. Electrical energy consumption for photocatalytic degradation of MO, AMX and 3-CP using CMCPR was 5.79×10(4), 7.31×10(4) and 2.52×10(4) kW h m(-3) order(-1), respectively, which were less than one-thousand of those by reported photoreactors. The higher flow rate (15 mL min(-1)), lower initial concentration (5 mg L(-1)) and acidic condition (pH 3) were more favorable for the photocatalytic degradation of MO using CMCPR. Five repetitive operations of CMCPR achieved more than 97.0% photodegradation of MO in each cycle and gave a relative standard deviation of 0.72%. In comparison with reported slurry and thin-film photoreactors, CMCPR exhibited higher photocatalytic efficiency, lower energy consumption and better repetitive operation performance for the degradation of MO, AMX and 3-CP in water. The results demonstrated the feasibility of utilizing CMCPR for the degradation of recalcitrant organic pollutants in water.
