Temperature-Responsive Separation Membrane with High Antifouling Performance for Efficient Separation

Temperature-responsive separation membranes can significantly change their permeability and separation properties in response to changes in their surrounding temperature, improving efficiency and reducing membrane costs. This study focuses on the modification of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes with amphiphilic temperature-responsive copolymer and inorganic nanoparticles. We prepared an amphiphilic temperature-responsive copolymer in which the hydrophilic poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAAm) was side-linked to a hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) skeleton. Subsequently, PVDF-g-PNIPAAm polymer and graphene oxide (GO) were blended with PVDF to prepare temperature-responsive separation membranes. The results showed that temperature-responsive polymers with different NIPAAm grafting ratios were successfully prepared by adjusting the material ratio of NIPAAm to PVDF. PVDF-g-PNIPAAm was blended with PVDF with different grafting ratios to obtain separate membranes with different temperature responses. GO and PVDF-g-PNIPAAm formed a relatively stable hydrogen bond network, which improved the internal structure and antifouling performance of the membrane without affecting the temperature response, thus extending the service life of the membrane.

Construction of self-healing polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane by cucurbit[8]uril hydrogel via RTIPS method and host-guest chemistry

In this work, the self-healing polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane constructed by host-guest chemistry between cucurbit [8]uril (CB [8] is a family of macrocyclic compounds comprising 8 glycoluril units) and two guest molecules based on reverse thermally induced phase separation (RTIPS) method was developed, which had excellent self-healing performance, better mechanical properties, and high permeation flux and BSA rejection rate. The membrane autonomously restored it BSA rejection rate up to about 89% from rejection rate levels as low as 21% after damage. The observed self-healing performance were attributed to the swelling of pore-filled CB [8] hydrogel into the damage position, the molecular interdiffusion of the hydrogel chains, the strong hydrogen bond of the hydrogel chains and the host-guest interaction between CB [8] and two guest molecules (HEC-Np and PVA-MV). SEM morphologies illustrated that the prepared pore-filled membrane via the RTIPS method had homogeneous and porous skin surface and sponge-like cross-section, which imparted the prepared membranes with improved permeability and better mechanical properties. Properties of MR-CB [8] membranes, which varied with increased content of CB [8], were evaluated by permeability, water contact angle, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical properties, FRR, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The contact angle water showed that CB [8] hydrogel enhanced the surface hydrophilicity of the prepared membrane. TGA illustrated that the thermal stability improved with the increased content of CB [8]. The optimal pore-filled CB [8] hydrogel membrane (MR-CB [8]₂) exhibited that the pure water flux reached 2100.5 L/m² h, while the BSA rejection rate remained at 86.0%. The results of this work suggested pore-filled CB [8] hydrogel membrane was a more promising way to develop polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes with self-healing performance.

Superhydrophilic polyethersulfone (PES) membranes with high scale inhibition properties obtained through bionic mineralization and RTIPS

Reverse thermally induced separation (RTIPS) was used to obtain a separation membrane with a better internal structure for a higher water flux and a surface that could easily form a hydration layer. In comparison to the traditional modification method, this work focused on the aspect that the internal structure obtained by changing the membrane-making method provided easier adhesion conditions for the dopamine/TiO₂ hybrid nanoparticles (DA/TiO₂ HNPs) obtained by biomimetic mineralization. It provided a basis for exploring the variation in adhesion with the water bath temperature and the amount of titanium added through the study of turbidity point, SEM images, water contact angle, thermogravimetric test, EDX, AFM, XPS, FTIR and other test results. The SEM images proved that the membrane obtained through the RTIPS method had a porous surface and spongy internal structure, furthermore, additional polymers were adsorbed. Use of EDX demonstrated that biomimetic mineralization prevented the production of agglomerated titanium dioxide. XPS and FTIR spectra confirmed the introduction and immobilization of HNP aggregation. Moreover, a decrease in the surface roughness and water contact angle further suggested an improvement in the hydrophilicity of the modified membrane. The introduction of HNP at a higher water bath temperature helped increase the water flux up to ten times, moreover, the oil-water separation efficiency could still reach over 99.50%. Lastly, a cycle test of the modified membrane under the optimal conditions helped confirm that the membrane forming conditions at this time could provide a better environment for the formation of the hydrophilic layer, which was conducive to the recycling of the separation membrane. In summary, more fixed more hydrophilic particles could be obtained through the RTIPS method based on biomimetic mineralization to prevent the accumulation of titanium dioxide, thus helping improve permeability and anti-fouling of the membrane.

One-Step Water-Induced Phase Separation Simultaneously Triggering Polymer Solidification and Polyelectrolyte Complexation for Porous Ultrafiltration Membranes

Functional additives have been widely utilized for the membrane structure modulation and performance improvement during the nonsolvent-induced phase separation process, but the resulted membranes easily suffer from additives' inhomogeneous dispersity and compatibility with the polymer matrix. Herein, a facile and robust strategy, i.e., one-step water-induced phase separation, was proposed for the preparation of polyelectrolytes-contained composite membranes. Polyanion (dopamine modified polyacrylic acid) and polycation (quaternized chitosan paired with bis(trifluoromethane-sulfonyl)imide) were first premixed in dimethyl sulfoxide and used as polyelectrolyte additives in a polysulfone (PSF) solution, and then a uniform PSF-based casting solution was readily obtained. During the solvent-water exchange process, polymer solidification and polyelectrolyte complexation were simultaneously triggered, in situ generating a polyelectrolyte complex fixed within the membrane matrix. Ultrafiltration membranes with hierarchical structures were notably tailored through altering the concentration, molecular weight, and type of polyelectrolytes. The obtained membrane exhibited a water flux of 672 L·m^-2·h^-1, three times over the raw PSF membrane, while almost maintaining high bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection. This work paves a straightforward and convenient path for the preparation of composite membranes with tunable architecture and properties.

A Review on the Use of Membrane Technology Systems in Developing Countries

Fulfilling the demand of clean potable water to the general public has long been a challenging task in most developing countries due to various reasons. Large-scale membrane water treatment systems have proven to be successful in many advanced countries in the past two decades. This paves the way for developing countries to study the feasibility and adopt the utilization of membrane technology in water treatment. There are still many challenges to overcome, particularly on the much higher capital and operational cost of membrane technology compared to the conventional water treatment system. This review aims to delve into the progress of membrane technology for water treatment systems, particularly in developing countries. It first concentrates on membrane classification and its application in water treatment, including membrane technology progress for large-scale water treatment systems. Then, the fouling issue and ways to mitigate the fouling will be discussed. The feasibility of membrane technologies in developing countries was then evaluated, followed by a discussion on the challenges and opportunities of the membrane technology implementation. Finally, the current trend of membrane research was highlighted to address future perspectives of the membrane technologies for clean water production.

Hydrothermally synthesized titanate nanomaterials for the removal of heavy metals and radionuclides from water: A review

Hazardous heavy metals and radionuclides in water and wastewater are of drastic concern owing to their detrimental impacts on the organisms as well as the circumambient ecosystem. To remove them as much as we can, both technique and materials were studied in the past years. The adsorption technique as superior water remediation method with the simplicity of design, environmental friendliness and high efficiency was well established. Consequently, it is practically important to explore advanced and economically feasible absorbents for removing these poisonous pollutants from aqueous solutions. So far, large numbers of experiments proved hydrothermally synthesized titanate nanomaterials (TNMs) could be a prospectively excellent adsorbent extracting heavy metals and radionuclides from water due to the high specific surface area, tunable pore size, abundant surface active sites, favorable hydrophilic properties. The objective of this work is to give an overview of hydrothermal synthesis, adsorption performance of TNMs for heavy metals and radionuclides, as well as the various influencing factors for water purification. It comprehensively reviews the structural changes and regenerability of TNMs after adsorption, and different modification methods adopted for improving removal capacity. Additionally, it uniquely highlights the efficient decontamination of the pollutants through a synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis by TNMs. This review provides detailed information for the development, application, and research challenges faced by hydrothermally synthesized TNMs for the removal of heavy metals and radionuclides from aqueous solutions, which will serve as a reference guide for scientists in related fields.

Rapid and Sensitive Detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis by an Enhanced Nanobiosensor

Tuberculosis (TB) mostly spreads from person to person through Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). However, the majority of conventional detection methods for MTB cannot satisfy the requirements for actual TB detection. As one of the most promising powerful platforms, a silicon nanowire field-effect transistor (SiNW-FET) biosensor shows good prospect in TB detection. In this study, an enhanced SiNW-FET biosensor was developed for the rapid and sensitive detection of MTB. The surface functional parameters of the biosensor were explored and optimized. The SiNW-FET biosensor has good sensitivity with a detection limit of 0.01 fg/mL toward protein. The current change value shows a linear upward trend with the increase in protein concentration in the range of 1 fg/mL to 100 μg/mL. One whole test cycle can be accomplished within only 30 s. More importantly, a good distinction was realized in the sputum without pretreatment between normal people and TB patients, which greatly shortened the TB detection time (only 2-5 min, considering the dilution of sputum). Compared with other methods, the SiNW-FET biosensor can detect MTB with a remarkably broad dynamic linear range in a shorter time.

Prospects of Synthesized Magnetic TiO2-Based Membranes for Wastewater Treatment: A Review

Global accessibility to clean water has stressed the need to develop advanced technologies for the removal of toxic organic and inorganic pollutants and pathogens from wastewater to meet stringent discharge water quality limits. Conventionally, the high separation efficiencies, relative low costs, small footprint, and ease of operation associated with integrated photocatalytic-membrane (IPM) technologies are gaining an all-inclusive attention. Conversely, photocatalysis and membrane technologies face some degree of setbacks, which limit their worldwide application in wastewater settings for the treatment of emerging contaminants. Therefore, this review elucidated titanium dioxide (TiO2), based on its unique properties (low cost, non-toxicity, biocompatibility, and high chemical stability), to have great potential in engineering photocatalytic-based membranes for reclamation of wastewater for re-use. The environmental pathway of TiO2 nanoparticles, membranes and configuration types, modification process, characteristics, and applications of IPMs in water settings are discussed. Future research and prospects of magnetized TiO2-based membrane technology is highlighted as a viable water purification technology to mitigate fouling in the membrane process and photocatalyst recoverability. In addition, exploring life cycle assessment research would also aid in utilizing the concept and pressing for large-scale application of this technology.

Development of hydrophilic PES membranes using F127 and HKUST-1 based on the RTIPS method: Mitigate the permeability-selectivity trade-off

In this study, to mitigate the permeability-selectivity trade-off effect, Pluronic F127 (F127) and HKUST-1 were employed to construct high-performance membranes based on the reverse thermally induced phase separation (RTIPS) method. F127, as a hydrophilic modifier, was applied to increase permeability and resist polyethersulfone (PES) membrane fouling, while the collapse of HKSUT-1 caused by its instability in pure water improved the permeability and selectivity of the membrane. Characterizations demonstrated the successful synthesis of HKUST-1, together with the successful introduction of HKSUT-1 and F127 in PES membranes. It was observed that the membrane prepared by the RTIPS process possessed a uniformly porous surface and sponge-like cross-section with excellent mechanical properties, higher permeability, and selectivity compared to the dense skin and finger-like cross-section of the membrane prepared by the nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. Moreover, the permeation and bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection rate of the optimal membrane reached 2378 L/m² h and 89.3%, respectively, which were far higher than those of the pure membrane. Hydrophilic F127 and many microvoids formed by the collapse of HKUST-1, played an important role in excellent antifouling properties, high permeability, and selectivity by pure water flux (PWF), flux recovery rate (FRR), BSA flux, and COD removal rate tests. Overall, the membrane with F127 and HKSUT-1 prepared via the RTIPS method not only obtained excellent antifouling properties but also mitigated the permeability-selectivity trade-off.

A novel mixed matrix polysulfone membrane for enhanced ultrafiltration and photocatalytic self-cleaning performance

Photocatalytic materials can be used as self-cleaning functional materials to alleviate the irreversible fouling of ultrafiltration membranes. In this work, the small size g-C₃N₄/Bi₂MoO₆ (SCB) blended polysulfone (PSF) ultrafiltration membranes was fabricated by hydrothermal and phase inversion methods. As a functional filler of ultrafiltration membranes, the small size g-C₃N₄ nanosheet decorated on the surface of Bi₂MoO₆ can enhance the photocatalytic performance for bovine serum albumin (BSA) degradation, and remove irreversible fouling under visible light irradiation. In addition, the introduction of SCB microspheres into PSF matrix obviously increased the porosity of ultrafiltration membranes. Therefore, the SCB-PSF ultrafiltration membranes displayed excellent antifouling performance (flux recovery ratio is 82.53%) and BSA rejection rates (94.77%). SCB-PSF also had high photocatalytic self-cleaning activity, indicating excellent application prospects in organic wastewater treatment.

Dual-Modular Aptasensor for Detection of Cardiac Troponin I Based on Mesoporous Silica Films by Electrochemiluminescence/Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy

A simple, dual-modular aptasensor for accurate determination of cardiac troponin I (cTnI), a sensitive biomarker of acute myocardial infarction, is reported. It has the parallel output of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) based on target-gated transportation of signal probes (luminol/H₂O₂ or Fe(CN)₆^3-/4-). The sensing capacity is originated from the amino-functionalized mouth margin of the nanochannels in a vertically oriented mesoporous silica film, which was in situ-grown on indium tin oxide-coated glass. With the linkage of glutaraldehyde to couple the aptamer as a trapper, it brings in the high specific target-gated response toward cTnI as decreased ECL or increased EIS. The concentration of cTnI is measurable by the ECL response within a wide linear range from 0.05 pg mL^-1 to 10 ng mL^-1, as well as the EIS response for a linear range between 0.05 pg mL^-1 and 1 ng mL^-1. Significantly, the self-verification of these two data from ECL and EIS validated each other with a satisfactory linear correlation (R² = 0.999), thereby realizing the more reliable and accurate quantification to avoid false results. The designed strategy is an effective method for detection of cTnI, which is of great potential to apply in clinical detection.
