Multifunctional PDMS polyHIPE filters for oil-water separation and antibacterial activity

Transparent Oil-Water Separating Hydrophobic Sponge Prepared from a Pickering High Internal Phase Emulsion Stabilized by Octadecyltrichlorosilane Grafting Carbon Nanotubes

Increasingly, oil spills and industrial discharges are wreaking havoc on the water environment; in order to efficiently separate oil and water from sewage containing oil or organic solvents, a novel porous polymer (P(EHA-co-BA)) was prepared by Pickering high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) template method. To obtain polyHIPE with better oil/water separation capacities, octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS)-modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and surfactants were used as costabilizers for HIPE, which improved the stability of HIPE as well as the mechanical properties and the separation efficiency of polyHIPE. In the presence of 1 wt % OTS-CNT adding in the oil phase, 1%OTS-CNT polyHIPE has high porosity (92.21%), favorable hydrophobicity (a water contact angle of 128°), and excellent mechanical properties. As a result, 1%OTS-CNT polyHIPE has high absorption of oils and oily solvents, e.g., dichloromethane up to 36 g/g, and maintains an absorption efficiency of >97% after 20 reapplications. In the formulation of polyHIPE, cinnamaldehyde (CA) has been added to provide superior antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). It appears that the novel polyHIPE proposed in this work is a reusable antibacterial porous polymer with promising applications for oil-water separation.

Surfactant-free gelatin-stabilised biodegradable polymerised high internal phase emulsions with macroporous structures

High internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templating is a well-established method for the generation of polymeric materials with high porosity (>74%) and degree of interconnectivity. The porosity and pore size can be altered by adjusting parameters during emulsification, which affects the properties of the resulting porous structure. However, there remain challenges for the fabrication of polyHIPEs, including typically small pore sizes (∼20-50 μm) and the use of surfactants, which can limit their use in biological applications. Here, we present the use of gelatin, a natural polymer, during the formation of polyHIPE structures, through the use of two biodegradable polymers, polycaprolactone-methacrylate (PCL-M) and polyglycerol sebacate-methacrylate (PGS-M). When gelatin is used as the internal phase, it is capable of stabilising emulsions without the need for an additional surfactant. Furthermore, by changing the concentration of gelatin within the internal phase, the pore size of the resulting polyHIPE can be tuned. 5% gelatin solution resulted in the largest mean pore size, increasing from 53 μm to 80 μm and 28 μm to 94 µm for PCL-M and PGS-M respectively. In addition, the inclusion of gelatin further increased the mechanical properties of the polyHIPEs and increased the period an emulsion could be stored before polymerisation. Our results demonstrate the potential to use gelatin for the fabrication of surfactant-free polyHIPEs with macroporous structures, with potential applications in tissue engineering, environmental and agricultural industries.

Physicochemical, structural, and adsorption characteristics of DMSPS-co-DVB nanopolymers

The aim of this work is the synthesis and characterization of the series of S,S'-thiodi-4,1-phenylene bis(thio-methacrylate)-co-divinylbenzene (DMSPS-co-DVB) nanomaterials. The series of new nanopolymers including three mixed systems with different ratios of DMSPS and DVB components, DMSPS-co-DVB = 1:1, DMSPS-co-DVB = 1:2, and DMSPS-co-DVB = 1:3, was synthesized in the polymerization reaction. The research task is to investigate the influence of the reaction mixture composition on morphological, textural, and structural properties of final nanosystems including size, shape, and agglomeration effect. The advanced biphasic nanomaterials enriched with thiol groups were successfully synthesized as potential sorbents for binding organic substances, heavy metals, or biomolecules. To determine the impact of the DMSPS monomer on the final properties of DMSPS-co-DVB nanocomposites, several techniques were applied to reveal the nano-dimensional structure (SAXS), texture (low-temperature nitrogen sorption), general morphology (SEM), acid-base properties (potentiometric titration), and surface chemistry and phase bonding effectiveness (FTIR/ATR spectroscopy). Finally, kinetic studies of aniline sorption on polymeric materials were performed.

Synthesis and Applications of Elastomeric Polymerized High Internal Phase Emulsions (PolyHIPEs)

Polymer foams (PFs) are among the most industrially produced polymeric materials, and they are found in applications including aerospace, packaging, textiles, and biomaterials. PFs are predominantly prepared using gas-blowing techniques, but PFs can also be prepared from templating techniques such as polymerized high internal phase emulsions (polyHIPEs). PolyHIPEs have many experimental design variables which control the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of the resulting PFs. Both rigid and elastic polyHIPEs can be prepared, but while elastomeric polyHIPEs are less commonly reported than hard polyHIPEs, elastomeric polyHIPEs are instrumental in the realization of new materials in applications including flexible separation membranes, energy storage in soft robotics, and 3D-printed soft tissue engineering scaffolds. Furthermore, there are few limitations to the types of polymers and polymerization methods that have been used to prepare elastic polyHIPEs due to the wide range of polymerization conditions that are compatible with the polyHIPE method. In this review, an overview of the chemistry used to prepare elastic polyHIPEs from early reports to modern polymerization methods is provided, focusing on the applications that flexible polyHIPEs are used in. The review consists of four sections organized around polymer classes used in the preparation of polyHIPEs: (meth)acrylics and (meth)acrylamides, silicones, polyesters and polyurethanes, and naturally occurring polymers. Within each section, the common properties, current challenges, and an outlook is suggested on where elastomeric polyHIPEs can be expected to continue to make broad, positive impacts on materials and technology for the future.

A novel janus membrane modified by MXene for enhanced anti-fouling and anti-wetting in direct contact membrane distillation

Membrane fouling and wetting limit the applications of membrane distillation (MD) for wastewater treatment, especially when treating the wastewater with a high concentration of low surface tension substances such as oil and surfactants. In this paper, virgin polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane was modified by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to enhance anti-wetting ability. Then a thin polydopamine (PDA) layer was coated as a reaction platform for further modification. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) was cross-linked with PDA to form a uniform and stable layer, through hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interaction to immobilize hydrophilic MXene, which formed a Janus MXene-PVDF membrane. The MXene layer was the key for superoleophobicity and high liquid entry pressure (LEP) of membrane, capable of mitigating membrane fouling and wetting when dealing with low surface tension wastewater (LSTW). From the experiments results, pristine PVDF membrane showed severe fouling and wetting with flux decline and salt leakage during treatment of LSTW (surfactants containing water, oil-in-water emulsion and sodium dodecyl sulfate stabilized oil-in-water emulsion). However, under the same conditions, the Janus MXene-PVDF membrane exhibited remarkably stable flux (9.3 kg m^-2h^-1, 9.1 kg m^-2h^-1, 10.2 kg m^-2h^-1) and salt rejection (almost 99.9%) after 15 h operation. Excellent fouling and wetting resistance of MXene-PVDF membrane was mainly attributed to its superhydrophilic and superoleophobic top surface (in-air water contact angle: 30.2°, under-water oil contact angle: 169.9°) and hydrophobic substrate (in-air water contact angle: 130.8°), together with high LEP value (91.1 Kpa). This study provides a viable route to fabricated a Janus membrane with outstanding fouling and wetting resistance for LSTW, oily wastewater and it has great potential for sewage treatment in the future.

Hierarchically Porous Microspheres by Thiol-ene Photopolymerization of High Internal Phase Emulsions-in-Water Colloidal Systems

A facile method for the preparation of hierarchically porous spherical particles using high internal phase water-in-oil-in-water (w/o/w) double emulsions via the photopolymerization of the water-in-oil high internal phase emulsion (w/o HIPE) was developed. Visible-light photopolymerization was used for the synthesis of microspherical particles. The HIP emulsion had an internal phase volume of 80% and an oil phase containing either thiol pentaerythritol tetrakis(3-mercaptopropionate) (PETMP) or trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) (TMPTMP) and acrylate trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA). This enabled the preparation of microspheres with an open porous morphology, on both the surface and within the microsphere, with high yields in a batch manner. The effect of the thiol-to-acrylate ratio on the microsphere diameter, pore and window diameter, and degradation was investigated. It is shown that thiol has a minor effect on the microsphere and pore diameter, while the acrylate ratio affects the degradation speed, which decreases with increasing acrylate content. The possibility of free thiol group functionalization was demonstrated by a reaction with allylamine, while the microsphere adsorption capabilities were tested by the adsorption of methylene blue.

Porous Polymers from High Internal Phase Emulsions as Scaffolds for Biological Applications

High internal phase emulsions (HIPEs), with densely packed droplets of internal phase and monomers dispersed in the continuous phase, are now an established medium for porous polymer preparation (polyHIPEs). The ability to influence the pore size and interconnectivity, together with the process scalability and a wide spectrum of possible chemistries are important advantages of polyHIPEs. In this review, the focus on the biomedical applications of polyHIPEs is emphasised, in particular the applications of polyHIPEs as scaffolds/supports for biological cell growth, proliferation and tissue (re)generation. An overview of the polyHIPE preparation methodology is given and possibilities of morphology tuning are outlined. In the continuation, polyHIPEs with different chemistries and their interaction with biological systems are described. A further focus is given to combined techniques and advanced applications.

Engineering Toolbox for Systematic Design of PolyHIPE Architecture

Polymerization of high internal phase emulsions (polyHIPEs) is a well-established method for the production of high porosity foams. Researchers are often regulated to using a time-intensive trial and error approach to achieve target pore architectures. In this work, we performed a systematic study to identify the relative effects of common emulsion parameters on pore architecture (mixing speed, surfactant concentration, organic phase viscosity, molecular hydrophobicity). Across different macromer chemistries, the largest magnitude of change in pore size was observed across surfactant concentration (~6 fold, 5-20 wt%), whereas changing mixing speeds (~4 fold, 500-2000 RPM) displayed a reduced effect. Furthermore, it was observed that organic phase viscosity had a marked effect on pore size (~4 fold, 6-170 cP) with no clear trend observed with molecular hydrophobicity in this range (logP = 1.9-4.4). The efficacy of 1,4-butanedithiol as a reactive diluent was demonstrated and provides a means to reduce organic phase viscosity and increase pore size without affecting polymer fraction of the resulting foam. Overall, this systematic study of the microarchitectural effects of these macromers and processing variables provides a framework for the rational design of polyHIPE architectures that can be used to accelerate design and meet application needs across many sectors.
