Use of aqueous two-phase systems formed by Triton X and choline chloride for extraction of organic and inorganic arsenic

Cross-linked dithiocarbamate-modified cellulose with enhanced thermal stability and dispersibility as a sorbent for arsenite removal

Numerous reports have described dithiocarbamate (DTC)-modified cellulose sorbents that can selectively separate metal ions from water. We have previously synthesized a novel sorbent modified with DTC containing N-heterocycles in the backbone for the selective removal of hazardous metal ions. The sorbent was found to partially dissolve and aggregate in solution, reducing its sorption capacity. In this study, to prepare the sorbent for use as a soli-phase extraction material for the removal of arsenite (As^III) ions, we attempted to decrease the solubility of the sorbent. The sorbent was cross-linked with epoxy or complexed with iron, and the quantities of the modifiers were varied between 3.0 and 10 mol%. As a result, the iron-complexed sorbents were still partially soluble, and cross-linkage with 6.0 mol% of epoxy made the sorbent almost insoluble and dispersed in solution. This sorbent also exhibited the highest As^III sorption performance among the sorbents synthesized in this study. Although DTC-modified polymers are reported to lose their sorption capability after storage at 40 °C, the sorbent was found to be thermally stable. The optimum contact time and pH for As^III removal were 20 min and 3.0, respectively. The maximum sorption capacity of the epoxy-cross-linked sorbent, calculated from the Langmuir isotherm equation, was 600 μmol g^-1 (45 mg g^-1) at 25 °C. Additionally, the sorbent was highly selective toward As^III compared with previously reported sorbents and capable of removing approximately 97% of As^III from environmental water. In conclusion, cross-linking enhances the stability of the sorbents in solutions, which facilitates the removal of As^III from environmental water.

Remediation of diesel-contaminated soil by alkoxyethanol aqueous two-phase system

The increasing diesel pollution accidents pose a serious threat to the ecological environment and human health. Remediation of diesel-contaminated soil (DCS) has attracted widespread attention during the past few decades. This work proposed an approach for the remediation of DCS by alkoxyethanol aqueous two-phase extraction (ATPE), which was an application of this small molecule aqueous two-phase system (ATPS). In addition, the influence of temperature, stirring speed, stirring time, and solid-liquid ratio on the removal of diesel was explored respectively. The removal efficiency of diesel could reach more than 97.18% in 18 min. Meanwhile, ATPS had high reusability, and the removal efficiency remained above 85.17% in the reuse process. Alkoxyethanol ATPE could effectively remove diesel hydrocarbons with different carbon chain lengths and the remediation process hardly caused residual organic solvents on the soil surface according to the analysis of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier transforms infrared (FT-IR), which could be regarded as the distinct advantage compared to the traditional surfactant washing method and organic solvent extraction method. The study of soil physicochemical properties and wheat germination proved that the soil structure and properties changed little after ATPE remediation. And finally, the mechanism of alkoxyethanol ATPE was intensively discussed according to the remediation characteristic. This work provided an efficient method for the remediation of DCS and widened the application fields of alkoxyethanol ATPS as well.

Switchable deep eutectic solvent driven micellar extractive fermentation of ultrapure fibrin digesting enzyme from Bacillus subtilis

Fibrinolytic protease (FLP) is a therapeutic enzyme used in the treatment of thrombolytic diseases. The present study proposed the concept of pH-driven swappable micellar two-phase extraction for the concurrent production and purification of FLP from Bacillus subtilis at cloud point extraction. Extractive fermentation was carried out with a pH swap mechanism and FLP was extracted to the top phase by surfactant deep eutectic solvents (SDES). Shrimp waste was chosen as a sustainable low-cost substrate that yielded a maximum protease of 185 U/mg. Six SDESs were synthesized with nonionic surfactants as hydrogen bond donors and quaternary ammonium salts as hydrogen bond acceptors and their association was confirmed by H¹ NMR. Thermophysical investigation of the synthetic SDES was accomplished as a function of temperature. Response surface methodology for extractive fermentation was performed with the concentration of SADES (35% w/v), Na₂SO₄ (15% w/v) and pH (6.3) as variables and the enzyme activity (248 IU/mg) as a response. Furthermore, purification using gel filtration chromatography was used to quantify the amount of enzyme obtained in the extraction phase (849 IU/ml). After final purification with an anion exchange column, the maximum purity fold (22.32) with enzyme activity (1172 IU/ml) was achieved. The in-vitro fibrinolytic activity has been confirmed using a fibrin plate assay.
