Mechanism of Interconnected Pore Formation in High Internal Phase Emulsion-Templated Polymer

High internal phase emulsion-templated polymer, named polyHIPE, has received widespread attention due to its great potential applications in many fields, such as separation, adsorption, heterogeneous catalysis, and sound absorption. The broad applicability is largely dependent on its adjustable opening structure. However, the question of why polyHIPE has an interconnected pore network structure is still to be discussed. Herein, different types (w/o, o/w, and o/o) of HIPEs are prepared and subsequently detected with laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM), and the polyHIPEs obtained by curing the HIPEs are characterized by SEM. The observations suggest that the interconnected pore formation is primarily due to the presence of the surfactant-rich phase in the film between the neighboring droplets in HIPE. The interconnected pores are generated by removal of the surfactant-rich domains in the postcuring procedure, and their sizes would be enlarged if the solubility of the surfactant in the continuous phase decreases in the curing stage.

Investigation of synergistic effects incorporating esterified lignin and guar gum composite aerogel for sustained oil spill cleanup

The recently developed aerogel demonstrates a high capacity for pollutant absorption, making it an environmentally friendly option for oily water treatment. In an effort to reduce the adverse effects of the black liquor accumulation in the pulp industry, this study focused on utilizing the mentioned abundant bio-resource lignin, which can be applied to various high-value applications such as 3D porous materials for oil spill cleanup. Lignin, precipitated from the black liquor, was esterified using maleic anhydride as the esterifying reagent to enhance the hydrophobicity. Then, the composite aerogel fabricated from esterified lignin and guar gum (GG) was successfully prepared through the facile freeze-drying, using glutaraldehyde (GA) as the cross-linker. The resulting aerogel exhibited high porosity values exceeding 95%, low density (27.4 mg/cm3), and an impressive absorption capacity of 32.5 g/g for sunflower oil. These results demonstrate the potential of black liquor utilization as a bio-waste source of lignin and highlight the cost-effective guar gum-esterified lignin composite aerogel, which exhibits remarkable oil absorption capabilities and environmental sustainability promotion.

Removal of Fe(III)/Al(III)/Mg(II) by phosphonic group functionalized resin in wet-process phosphoric acid: Mechanism and intrinsic selectivity

The removal of iron ions (Fe(III)), aluminum ions (Al(III)), and magnesium ions (Mg(II)) in phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) solution is vital for the production of H₃PO₄ and supply of phosphate fertilizer. However, the mechanism and intrinsic selectivity for removal of Fe(III), Al(III), and Mg(II) from wet-process phosphoric acid (WPA) by phosphonic group (-PO₃H₂) functionalized MTS9500 are still unclear. In this work, the removal mechanisms were determined via combined analysis of FT-IR, XPS, molecular dynamics (MD), and quantum chemistry (QC) simulations based on density functional theory (DFT). The metal-removal kinetics and isotherms were further studied to confirm the removal mechanisms. The results indicate that Fe(III), Al(III), and Mg(II) interact with the -PO₃H₂ functional groups in MTS9500 resin with sorption energies of -126.22 kJ·mol^-1, -42.82 kJ·mol^-1, and -12.94 kJ·mol^-1, respectively. Moreover, the intrinsic selectivities of the resin for Fe(III), Al(III), and Mg(II) removal were quantified by the selectivity coefficient (S_i/j). The S_{Fe(III)/Al(III)}, S_{Fe(III)/Mg(II)} and S_{Al(III)/Mg(II)} are 18.2, 55.1 and 3.02, respectively. This work replenishes sorption theory that can be used in the recycling of electronic waste treatment acid, sewage treatments, hydrometallurgy, and purification of WPA in industry.

Zein adsorbents with micro/nanofibrous membrane structure for removal of oils, organic dyes, and heavy metal ions in aqueous solution

Developing multi-functional media for effectively removing different contaminants coexisted in wastewater system is highly desired. Herein, zein, a natural protein possessing abundant functional groups in molecule, is chosen to be fabricated into micro/nanofibrous membranes as adsorbents and separation media. Zein fibers with novel groove ribbon structures, which possess better structural characteristics, are designed for obtaining good adsorption performance. The adsorption performances of zein fiber membranes are evaluated. The results show that zein fiber membranes have the adsorption capacities up to 94 g/g for motor oil, 168 mg/g for Congo red, and 189 mg/g for Pb²⁺ ion for 1000 mg/L initial solution concentration, showing considerable competitiveness as compared with the reported adsorbents. The zein membrane with groove ribbon fiber morphology exhibits optimal adsorption capability and can be attractive multi-functional separation media.
