Activation of peroxymonosulfate by cobalt doped graphitic carbon nitride for ammonia removal in chloride-containing wastewater

Radiation-induced preparation of nanoscale CoO@graphene oxide for activating peroxymonosulfate to degrade emerging organic pollutants

In this study, ionizing radiation was used to induce the in-situ formation of highly dispersed nanosized cobalt oxide on the surface of graphene oxide (R-Co-GO), which was highly effective for activating PMS to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX). R-Co-GO had the highest catalytic activity when 150 μL cobalt chloride hexahydrate solution was used in the precursor, and the pseudo first-order kinetic constant of SMX degradation was 0.07 min-1 with high mineralization efficiency (63.1 %) and high PMS utilization efficiency. The sulfate radicals and high-valent cobalt oxo were mainly responsible for SMX degradation. Mechanism analysis showed that cobalt active site dominated in PMS activation, which was responsible for the formation of sulfate radicals and high-valent cobalt oxo; while the carbon framework contributed to the formation of singlet oxygen. The R-Co-GO-150 had good catalytic activity and stability in five cycling experiments, in which SMX was completely degraded and the concentration of dissolved Co was below 0.1 mg/L. In addition, the R-Co-GO-150/PMS system could also degrade phenol, bisphenol A, atrazine and nitrobenzene effectively, confirming its wide applicability. This study provided a facile method to uniformly disperse the metal oxides on the surface of carbon materials, and an effective system for the removal of emerging organic pollutants from the actual wastewater.

Enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation via heteroatomic doping defects of pyridinic and pyrrolic N in 2D N‑doped carbon nanosheets for BPA degradation

Understanding the role of intrinsic defects and nonmetallic heteroatom doping defects in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and subsequently degrading endocrine-disrupting compounds is crucial for designing more efficient carbon catalysts. Therefore, we synthesized N-rich carbon nanosheets (NCs) through pyrolysis of a glutamic acid and melamine mixture and utilized them to activate PMS for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. Different weight ratios of the above mixtures were allowed for manipulating NCs' defect level and N configuration. The reaction rate constant (k) was significantly positively correlated with the pyridinic and pyrrolic N content, and negatively and weakly positively correlated with graphite N and intrinsic defects, respectively. These findings suggest pyridinic and pyrrolic N, rather than graphitic N and intrinsic defects, enhance PMS activation to generate reactive oxygen species (specifically O•-2 and 1O2) and oxidize BPA. The NC-activated PMS system with the highest N content (17.9 atom%) demonstrated a remarkably high k (0.127 min-1) using minimal concentrations of PMS (0.4 mM) and NC (0.15 g/L), highlighting the system's efficiency. Excess halide anions led to significantly increased k with only a limited formation of trichloromethane (disinfection byproducts) in presence of 100 mM Cl-. This study offers novel perspectives on identifying catalytic sites within N-doped carbonaceous materials.

Nitrogen-containing wastewater fuel cells for total nitrogen removal and energy recovery based on Cl•/ClO• oxidation of ammonia nitrogen

The excess nitrogen discharge into water bodies has resulted in extensive water pollution and human health risks, which has become a critical global issue. Moreover, nitrogenous wastewater contains considerable chemical energy contributed by organic pollutants and nitrogenous compounds. Therefore, the treatment of various kinds of nitrogen-containing wastewater for nitrogen removal and energy recovery is of significance. Biological methode and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are the main methods for nitrogen removal. However, biological treatment is easily inhibited by high-salinity, high ammonia nitrogen (NH₃-N/NH₄⁺-N), nitrite and toxic organics in wastewater, which limits its application. AOPs mainly induce in situ generation of highly reactive species, such as hydroxyl radical (HO•), sulfate radical (SO₄•^-) and chlorine radicals (Cl•, ClO•, Cl₂•^-), for nitrogen removal. Nevertheless, HO• shows low reactivity and N₂ selectivity towards NH₃-N/NH₄⁺-N oxidation, and SO₄•^- also demonstrates unsatisfactory NH₃-N/NH₄⁺-N removal. It has been shown that Cl•/ClO• can efficiently remove NH₃-N/NH₄⁺-N with high N₂ selectivity. The generation of Cl•/ClO• can be triggered by various techniques, among which the PEC technique shows great potential due to its higher efficiency for Cl•/ClO• generation and eco-friendly approach for pollutants degradation and energy recovery by utilizing solar energy. Cl•/ClO• oxidation of NH₃-N/NH₄⁺-N and nitrate nitrogen (NO₃^--N) reduction can be strengthened through the design of photoanode and cathode materials, respectively. Coupling with this two pathways, an exhaustive total nitrogen (TN) removal system is designed for complete TN removal. When introducing the mechanism into photocatalytic fuel cells (PFCs), the concept of nitrogen-containing wastewater fuel cells (NFCs) is proposed to treat several typical types of nitrogen-containing wastewater, achieving high-efficiency TN removal, organics degradation, toxic chlorate control, and energy recovery simultaneously. Recent research progress in this field is reviewed, summarized and discussed, and in-depth perspectives are proposed, providing new ideas for the resource treatment of nitrogen-containing wastewater.

A critical review of textile industry wastewater: green technologies for the removal of indigo dyes

The denim textile industry represents an important productive sector. It generates wastewater with low biodegradability due to the presence of persistent pollutants, which can produce toxic and carcinogenic compounds; therefore, wastewater treatment reduces risks to aquatic life and public health. This paper presents a review of 172 papers regarding textile industry wastewater treatment for the removal of contaminants, especially indigo dyes used in the denim industry, in the context of green technologies. The physicochemical characteristics of textile wastewater, its environmental and health impacts, and the permissible limit regulations in different countries were reviewed. Biological, physicochemical and advanced oxidation processes for the removal of indigo dyes were reviewed. The goal of this study was to analyze the characteristics of green technologies; however, the research does not clearly demonstrate an effect on energy consumption savings, carbon footprint decreases, and/or waste generation. Advanced oxidation processes showed the highest color removal efficiency (95 and 97% in synthetic or real wastewater, respectively). Photocatalysis and Fenton reactions were the most efficient processes. None of the revised works presented results regarding upscaling for industrial application, and the results should be discussed in terms of the guidelines and maximum permissible limits established by international legislation. New technologies need to be developed and evaluated in a sustainable context with real wastewater.

Selective oxidation of ammonia to dinitrogen gas by facile Co2+/PMS/chloridion process through reactive chlorine radicals

The selective oxidation of ammonia to dinitrogen gas in some special wastewater is of paramount significance, but still a challenge. In this study, chlorine radical (Cl•)-mediated oxidation process was developed to realize the selective oxidation of NH₄⁺-N to N₂, in which Cl• was generated in Co²⁺/peroxymonosulfate (PMS)/chloridion (Cl^-) system. The effect of various operational parameters on the efficiency and selectivity of ammonia oxidation to N₂ was investigated, such as PMS concentration, Co²⁺ concentration, Cl^- concentration and pH value. The experiment results showed that Cl•-mediated NH₄⁺-N oxidation reaction exhibited high NH₄⁺-N removal efficiency and considerable selectivity to N₂ in the range of pH from 2.0 to 6.5. The removal efficiency of NH₄⁺-N was 90.39%, and the selectivity of NH₄⁺-N to N₂ achieved up to 97.16%. The possible mechanism for high efficient and selective oxidation of NH₄⁺-N to N₂ was tentatively proposed. The process developed in this study could provide a novel technology for the treatment and selective oxidation of ammonium in some special types of ammonium-containing wastewater.
