Rapid and green combustion synthesis of nanocomposites based on Zn–Co–O nanostructures as photocatalysts for enhanced degradation of acid brown 14 contaminant under sunlight

Immunomodulatory activity and protective effect of a capsular polysaccharide in Caenorhabditis elegans, isolated from Lactobacillus fermentum GBJ

A capsular polysaccharide, namely CPS-2, was isolated from Lactobacillus fermentum GBJ, purified using DEAE-52 anion exchange chromatography, and structurally characterized. We found that CPS-2 is homogenous, has an average molecular weight of 377 KDa, and is mainly composed of galactose and glucose at a molar ratio of 1.54:1.00. Its backbone comprises α-D-Galp-(1 → 3), α-D-Galp-(1 → 3,6), β-D-Glcp-(1 → 2), β-D-Galp-(1 → 6), and α-D-Galp-(1 → 4) residues with a side chain of β-D-Glcp-(1→). CPS-2 exerts an immunomodulatory effect by improving the proliferation and phagocytosis of macrophage RAW264.7 and promoting the secretion of NO and cytokines. The maximum secretion levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α were 1.96-, 0.11-, 0.22-, and 0.46-fold higher than those of the control, respectively. Furthermore, CPS-2 could significantly enhance the antioxidant system, extend lifespan, and improve stress tolerance of Caenorhabditis elegans at both exposure doses of 31.25 and 62.5 μg/mL. The average lifespan of nematodes reached a maximum in the 62.5 μg/mL-treated group after 10.39 days, 6.56 h, and 23.56 h in normal, oxidative stress, and heat shock environment, with extension percentages of 16.61 %, 43.23 %, and 15.77 %, respectively; therefore, CPS-2 displays an anti-aging effect. The significant bioactivity of CPS-2 promotes its application as a promising immunomodulatory and anti-aging ingredient in the food or pharmaceutical field.

Similarities and differences of nano-sized levan synthesized by Bacillus haynesii at low and high temperatures: Characterization and bioactivity

Levan is a biopolymer with many different uses. Temperature is an important parameter in biopolymer synthesis. Herein, levan production was carried out from Bacillus haynesii, a thermophilic microorganism, in the temperature range of 4 °C-95 °C. The highest levan production was measured as 10.9 g/L at 37 °C. The synthesized samples were characterized by FTIR and NMR analysis. The particle size of the levan samples varied between 153 and 824.4 nm at different temperatures. In levan samples produced at high temperatures, the water absorption capacity is higher in accordance with the particle size. Irregularities were observed in the surface pores at temperatures of 60 °C and above. The highest emulsion capacity of 83.4 % was measured in the sample synthesized at 4 °C. The antioxidant activity of all levan samples synthesized at different temperatures was measured as 84 % on average. All synthesized levan samples showed antibacterial effect on pathogenic bacteria. In addition, levan synthesized at 45 °C showed the highest antimicrobial effect on E. coli ATCC 35218 with an inhibition zone of 21.3 ± 1.82 mm. Antimicrobial activity against yeast sample C. albicans, was measured only in levan samples synthesized at 80 °C, 90 °C, 95 °C temperatures. Levan synthesized from Bacillus haynesii at low and high temperatures showed differences in characterization and bioactivity.

Avocado seed starch: Effect of the variety on molecular, physicochemical, and digestibility characteristics

Agro-industrial residues can increase environmental pollution owing to poor knowledge of the use of some components, such as dietary fiber, protein, starch, minerals, and bioactive compounds, which can be used in the food industry. This study compared the molecular, physicochemical, and digestibility characteristics of three avocado seed starches (Criolla, Fuerte, and Hass). Starch was extracted through successive washing and sedimentation. The morphology, size distribution, thermal properties, pasting properties, infrared spectra with Fourier transform, size distribution of amylopectin chains, and digestibility of the three avocado seed strains were analyzed. The starch grains were oval and spherical in shape. The average size of Criolla avocado starch (24.55 μm) was the largest, followed by Hass and Fuerte starches (21.37 μm). Higher gelatinization enthalpy (8.55 J/g), gelatinization temperature (75.28 °C), and pasting temperature (75.57 °C) were observed for Fuerte avocado starch, followed by Hass and Criolla starches. Hass avocado starch exhibited higher maximum (836.27 mPa.s), final (1407.37 mPa.s), setback (588.78 mPa.s), and breakdown (17.68 mPa.s) viscosities than Criolla and Fuerte avocado starches. In addition, the probed avocado starches exhibited high content of resistant starch (60.06-68.90%). Therefore, it was demonstrated that differences in the chemical composition and structure of avocado starch can affect the digestibility of native starch.

A clinical perspective of chitosan nanoparticles for infectious disease management

Infectious diseases and their effective management are still a challenge in this modern era of medicine. Diseases, such as the SARS-CoV-2, Ebola virus, and Zika virus, still put human civilization at peril. Existing drug banks, which include antivirals, antibacterial, and small-molecule drugs, are the most advocated method for treatment, although effective but they still flounder in many instances. This calls for finding more effective alternatives for tackling the menace of infectious diseases. Nanoformulations are progressively being implemented for clinical translation and are being considered a new paradigm against infectious diseases. Natural polymers like chitosan are preferred to design nanoparticles owing to their biocompatibility, biodegradation, and long shelf-life. The chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs) being highly adaptive delivers contemporary prevention for infectious diseases. Currently, they are being used as antibacterial, drug, and vaccine delivery vehicles, and wound-dressing materials, for infectious disease treatment. Although the recruitment of CNPs in clinical trials associated with infectious diseases is minimal, this may increase shortly due to the sudden emergence of unknown pathogens like SARS-CoV-2, thus turning them into a panacea for the management of microorganisms. This review particularly focuses on the all-around application of CNPs along with their recent clinical applications in infectious disease management.

Genome-wide association study for single nucleotide polymorphism associated with mural and cumulus granulosa cells of PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and non-PCOS patients

Background

The genetic make-up of local granulosa cells and their function in the pathophysiology of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is crucial to a full comprehension of the disorder. The major purpose of this study was to compare the Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) of cumulus granulosa cells (CGCs) and mural granulosa cells (MGCs) between healthy individuals and women with PCOS using genome-wide association analysis (GWA). A case–control study was conducted in a total of 24 women diagnosed with PCOS and 24 healthy non-PCOS women of reproductive age aggregated into 4 samples of 6 patients each. GWA studies entail several processes, such as cell separation, cellular DNA extraction, library preparation followed by interpretation using bioinformatics databases. SNP locations were identified by reference gene also involves the use of Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) (MALDI-TOF-MS) for the first sorting. Hybridization with the gene chip was followed by reading the SNP genotypes according to the publications in the literature. TASSEL (Trait Analysis by aSSociation, Evolution and Linkage) program and methods were used for GWA studies.

Results

An aggregate of 21,039 SNP calls were obtained from our samples. Genes of autoimmune illnesses, obesity, inflammatory illnesses, nervous system diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa, autism, neural tube defects, and Alzheimer's disease; and various malignancies such as lung cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer were also identified in these cells. Gene ranking score reveals that granulosa cells carry key genes of neurological system and reproductive systems especially in brain and testis, respectively.

Conclusions

Mural and Cumulus Granulosa cells were shown to have the PCOS directly and indirectly related genes MMP9, PRKAA2, COMT and HP. We found that the expression of ARID4B, MUC5AC, NID2, CREBBP, GNB1, KIF2C, COL18A1, and HNRNPC by these cells may contribute to PCOS.

Hydrophobic and oleophilic open-cell foams from in-situ microfibrillation blends of poly(lactic acid) and polytetrafluoroethylene: Selective oil-adsorption behaviors

Confronted with severe water contamination induced by the spillage of oils, seeking oil-selective adsorbent to recover oil from oily wastewater is extremely urgent. In particular, the functionalized polymer foams with open-cell structures are highly promising oil-selective adsorbent. Herein, a simple, effective and green method was presented to prepare open-cell poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) foams with selective oil-adsorption behaviors via melt blending and supercritical CO₂ batch foaming technique. The introduction of PTFE had a distinct positive influence on the melt viscoelasticity and crystallization performances of various PLA specimens. The resulted PLA/PTFE4 foam with a volume expansion ratio of 10.17 ± 0.93 and a cell density of 1.58 × 10⁸ cells/cm³ possessed the highest open-cell content of 90.81 ± 0.78 %. Meanwhile, PLA/PTFE4 foam revealed oil/water selective adsorption capacity of 1.2-6.1 g/g for various organic solvents and oils. The adsorption capacity of PLA/PTFE4 foam for CCl₄ exhibited no significant decrement during ten adsorption-desorption cycles. This research offered a guideline for the manufacture of green environmental open-cell polymer foams for oil-selective adsorption.

Non-coding RNA in SARS-CoV-2: Progress toward therapeutic significance

The recently developed pathogenic virus, SARS-CoV-2, was found in the Hubei Province, China. Giving rise to a broad spectrum of symptoms, SARS-CoV-2 rapidly spread across the globe, causing multi-systemic and dangerous complications, with death in extreme cases. Thereby, the number of research cases increases every day on preventing infection and treating its resulting damage. Accumulating evidence suggests noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) are necessary for modifying virus infection and antiviral immune reaction, along with biological processes regulating SARS-CoV-2 and subsequent disease states. Therefore, understanding these mechanisms might provide a further understanding of the pathogenesis and feasible therapy alternatives against SARS-CoV2. Consequently, the molecular biology of SARS-CoV-2, ncRNA's role in its infection, and various RNA therapy tactics against the virus have been presented in this review section.

Amalgamation of Nanoparticles within Drug Carriers: A Synergistic Approach or a Futile Attempt?

In recent years, nanotechnology has gained much attention from scientists and significant advances in therapeutic potential. Nano-delivery systems have emerged as an effective way in order to improve the therapeutic properties of drugs including solubility, stability, prolongation of half-life as well as promoting the accumulation of drug at the target site. The nanoparticles have also been incorporated into various conventional drug delivery systems. This review study aims to introduce the amalgamation of nanoparticles into drug carriers. To overcome the limitations of single nanoparticles such as toxicity, high instability, rapid drug release as well as limited drug loading capacity, a multi-component system is developed. Liposomes, microparticles, nanofibers, dendrimers etc., are promising drug carriers, having some limitations that can be minimized, and the compilation of nanoparticles synergizes the properties. The amalgamated nanocarriers are used for the diagnostic purpose as well as treatment of various chronic diseases. It also increases the solubility of hydrophobic drugs. However, each system has its advantages and disadvantages based on its physicochemical properties, efficacy, and other parameters. This review details the past and present state of development for the fusion of nanoparticles within drug carriers and from which we identify future research works needed for the same.

A Highly Breathable and Machine-Washable ePTFE-Aided Down-Proof Cotton Fabric

Feather and down textiles are widely used in our daily life, especially in winter. However, they are easily drilled out from the fabric body and are difficult to machine-wash, which thereby blocks their widespread application. In order to solve these issues, a highly anti-drilling, breathable and machine-washable ePTFE-aided down-proof cotton fabric was prepared in this work, which was done by modifying a plain-weave cotton fabric with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) nanofiber membrane via point glue method. The fabrication procedure is simple, scalable and environmentally friendly, which is a prerequisite for large-scale production. The effects of tumble and washing cycles on pore size distribution and the corresponding anti-drilling behavior of the prepared down-proof fabric were systematically investigated. Furthermore, the machine washability, air permeability, thermal insulation and tensile properties of the fabric were studied. The results demonstrated that less than five drilled files escaped from the fabric surface, irrespective of tumble and/or laundering cycles, and it also has the advantages of being lightweight (<83 g/m2), having high breathability, a good thermal insulation rate (≈80%) and can be washed with surfactant by a laundry machine without explosion. Benefiting from the above characteristics, the as-prepared ePTFE-aided down-proof cotton fabric presents its potential application in the field of home textiles.

High Photoluminescence Polyindole/CuInS Quantum Dots for Pb Ions Sensor

Polyindole is considered an excellent conducting polymer with interested properties for different applications. A novel polyindole (PIn)/CuInS (CIS)/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) nanocomposite was synthesized via in situ polymerization of PIn in presence of CIS/ZnS QDs. By investigating the effect of CIS/ZnS QDs on optical properties of PIn, it was found that the optical band gaps of PIn, CIS/ZnS QDs, and PIn/CIS/ZnS QDs nanocomposite were 3.24 eV, 4.68 eV and 3.44 eV, respectively. From the luminance spectra, it was observed that emission peaks of PIn at 442 and 468 nm are independent of the excitation wavelength with the highest intensity at excitation wavelength of 380 nm. However, the luminance spectrum of PIn/CIS/ZnS QDs nanocomposite exhibited a quenching peak for CIS/ZnS QDs while the intensity of PIn peak was enhanced. High resolution of transmission electron microscope image of CIS/ZnS QDs revealed nanocrystals with a size of 3–4.5 nm and lattice space of 0.2 nm. PIn/CIS/ZnS QDs nanocomposite as the fluorescent probe was employed for sensing different concentrations of Pb2+ from 5 to 50 ppb. The reaction between PIn/CIS/ZnS QDs and Pb2+ was slightly quenched and fixed after 90 min. The emission peak was reduced gradually with increasing concentration of lead via photo-induced electron transfer or ion exchange mechanism. The value of correlation coefficient (R2) was 0.99, the sensitivity was 0.0041 ppb−1 and limit of detection value was 4.48 ppb.

Synthesis and defect characterization of hybrid ceria nanostructures as a possible novel therapeutic material towards COVID-19 mitigation

This study reports the synthesis of hybrid nanostructures composed of cerium dioxide and microcrystalline cellulose prepared by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal route under distinct temperature and pH values. Their structural, morphological and spectroscopic behaviors were investigated by X-Rays Diffraction, Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscopy, High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy, and Fourier-Transform Infrared, Ultraviolet-Visible, Raman and Positron Annihilation Lifetime spectroscopies to evaluate the presence of structural defects and their correlation with the underlying mechanism regarding the biocide activity of the studied material. The samples showed mean crystallite sizes around 10 nm, characterizing the formation of quantum dots unevenly distributed along the cellulose surface with a certain agglomeration degree. The samples presented the characteristic Ce-O vibration close to 450 cm-1 and a second-order mode around 1050 cm-1, which is indicative of distribution of localized energetic levels originated from defective species, essential in the scavenging of reactive oxygen species. Positron spectroscopic studies showed first and second lifetime components ranging between 202-223 ps and 360-373 ps, respectively, revealing the presence of two distinct defective oxygen species, in addition to an increment in the concentration of Ce3+-oxygen vacancy associates as a function of temperature. Therefore, we have successfully synthesized hybrid nanoceria structures with potential multifunctional therapeutic properties to be further evaluated against the COVID-19.

Pyridine-2-yl Quinoxaline (2-CPQ) Derivative As a Novel Pink Fluorophore: Synthesis, and Chemiluminescence Characteristics

Quinoxaline derivatives are well-known N-heterocycles with pharmacological and fluorescence activities. Almost all quinoxaline derivatives with extensive π-conjugation have been introduced as fluorophores which emit blue and green light. For the first time, we designed and synthesized 6-chloro-2,3 di(Pyridine-2yl) quinoxaline (2-CPQ) as a pink fluorophore in acetonitrile medium by simple route at room temperature whitin 30 min. The synthesized quinoxaline was identified using ¹H, ¹³C NMR, MS, and FT-IR spectroscopy. Our results showed that the iodine-catalyzed method for both oxidation and cyclization during the synthesis of quinoxaline from pyridine 2-carbaldehyde was straightforward, efficient, and clean. All of the mentioned characterization devices confirmed the synthesis of 2-CPQ.Moreover, we studied the photophysical properties of the synthesized fluorophore in which The UV-Vis absorption spectrum of 2-CPQ in DMF were three peaks at 451, 518 and 556 nm. Based on photophysical properties investigation, 2-CPQ shows good fluorescence with maximum peaks 607 and 653 nm in DMF as solvent (ф_F = 0.21). Hence, the fluorophore was applied in the peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence system. The reaction of imidazole, H₂O_2, and bis (2,4,6-trichlorophenyl) oxalate (TCPO) can transfer energy to a 6-chloro-2,3 di(pyridine-2yl) quinoxaline. In this process, dioxetane was synthesized, which chemically initiated the electron exchange luminescence (CIEEL) mechanism and led to pink light emission. We anticipate our synthesized fluorophores 2-CPQ will have great potential applications in imaging and medical markers.
