Biocatalytic membranes in anti-fouling and emerging pollutant degradation applications: Current state and perspectives

pH-responsive membranes: Mechanisms, fabrications, and applications

Understanding the mechanisms of pH-responsiveness allows researchers to design and fabricate membranes with specific functionalities for various applications. The pH-responsive membranes (PRMs) are particular categories of membranes that have an amazing aptitude to change their properties such as permeability, selectivity and surface charge in response to changes in pH levels. This review provides a brief introduction to mechanisms of pH-responsiveness in polymers and categorizes the applied polymers and functional groups. After that, different techniques for fabricating pH-responsive membranes such as grafting, the blending of pH-responsive polymers/microgels/nanomaterials, novel polymers and graphene-layered PRMs are discussed. The application of PRMs in different processes such as filtration membranes, reverse osmosis, drug delivery, gas separation, pervaporation and self-cleaning/antifouling properties with perspective to the challenges and future progress are reviewed. Lastly, the development and limitations of PRM fabrications and applications are compared to provide inclusive information for the advancement of next-generation PRMs with improved separation and filtration performance.

Polydopamine-functionalized polyethersulfone membrane: A paradigm advancement in the field of α-amylase stability and immobilization

Biocatalytic membranes have great potential in various industrial sectors, with the immobilization of enzymes being a crucial stage. Immobilizing enzymes through covalent bonds is a complex and time-consuming process for large-scale applications. Polydopamine (PDA) offers a more sustainable and eco-friendly alternative for enzyme immobilization. Therefore, surface modification with polydopamine as mussel-inspired antifouling coatings has increased resistance to fouling. In this study, α-amylase enzyme was covalently bound to a bioactive PDA-coated polyethersulfone (PES) membrane surface using cyanuric chloride as a linker. The optimal activity of α-amylase enzyme immobilized on PES/PDA membrane was obtained at temperature and pH of 55°C and 6.5, respectively. The immobilized enzyme can be reused up to five reaction cycles with 55% retention of initial activity. Besides, it maintained 60% of its activity after being stored for five weeks at 4°C. Additionally, the immobilized enzyme demonstrated increased Michaelis constant and maximum velocity values during starch hydrolysis. The results of the biofouling experiment of various membranes in a dead-end cell demonstrated that the PES membrane's water flux increased from 6722.7 Lmh to 7560.2 Lmh after PDA modification. Although α-amylase immobilization reduced the flux to 7458.5 Lmh due to enhanced hydrophilicity, compared to unmodified membrane. The findings of this study demonstrated that the membrane produced through co-deposition exhibited superior hydrophilicity, enhanced coating stability, and strong antifouling properties, positioning it as a promising candidate for industrial applications.

Polydopamine bridging encapsulated laccase on MOF-based mixed-matrix membrane for selective dye/salt separation

Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) exhibit significant potential for dye/salt separation. However, overcoming the "trade-off" between permeability and selectivity, as well as membrane fouling, remains a formidable task. In this work, a biocatalytic membrane was prepared using polydopamine (PDA) as a "bridge" connecting the metal-organic framework (MOF)-based MMM and immobilized laccase. The MOF-based MMM featured an interconnected MOF anchoring on the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) skeleton structure, effectively mitigating the "trade-off" phenomenon and enabling efficient separation of dyes and salts. Enzyme-MOF was in situ grown on the MOF-based MMM via coordination reactions between PDA and metal ion, effectively degrading the adhesion of organic pollutants and fouling, ensuring the long-term stable operation of the membrane. The Lac-MOF@PDA MMM exhibited excellent water permeability of 142.4 L·m-2·h-1, 100 % rejection for dye, and less than 10 % rejection for NaCl. Furthermore, the separation mechanism of Lac-MOF@PDA MMM was systematically investigated, and the results suggested a synergistic combination of rejection, adsorption and catalysis processes. This biocatalytic membrane with multiple sieving and biological catalysis is expected to pave a promising way for efficient wastewater treatment applications.

Immobilized enzymatic membrane surfaces for biocatalytic organics removal and fouling resistance

This research reported on the immobilization of environmentally friendly enzymes, such as horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and laccase (L), along with the hydrophilic zwitterionic compound l-DOPA on nano-filtration (NF) membranes. This approach introduced biocatalytic membranes, leveraging combined effects between membranes and enzymes. The aim was to systematically assess the efficacy of the enzymatic modified membrane (HRP-NF) in degrading colors in the wastewater, as well as enhancing the membrane resistance toward organic fouling. The enzymatic immobilized membrane demonstrated 96.3 ± 1.8% to 96.6 ± 1.9% removal of colors, and 65.2 ± 1.3% to 67.2 ± 1.3% removal of TOC. This result was underpinned by the insights obtained from the radical scavenger coumarin, which was employed to trap and confirm the formation of PRs through the reaction of enzymes and H2O2. Furthermore, membranes modified with enzymes exhibited significantly improved antifouling properties. The HRP-NF membrane experienced an 8% decline in flux, while the co-immobilized HRP-L-NF membrane demonstrated as low as 6% flux decline, contributed by the synergistic effect of increased hydrophilicity and biocatalytic effects. These findings confirmed that the immobilized enzymatic surface has added function of degrading contaminants in addition to separation function of nanofiltration membrane. These l-DOPA-immobilized enzymatic membranes offered a promising hybrid biocatalytic membrane to eliminate dyes and mitigate membrane fouling, which can be applied in many industrial and domestic water and wastewater treatment.

New directions on membranes for removal and degradation of emerging pollutants in aqueous systems

Emerging pollutants (EPs) refer to a group of non-regulated chemical or biological substances that have been recently introduced or detected in the environment. These pollutants tend to exhibit resistance to conventional treatment methods and can persist in the environment for prolonged periods, posing potential adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. As we enter a new era of managing these pollutants, membrane-based technologies hold significant promise in mitigating impact of EPs on the environment and safeguarding human health due to their high selectivity, efficiency, cost-effectiveness and capability for simultaneous separation and degradation. Moreover, these technologies continue to evolve rapidly with the development of new membrane materials and functionalities, advanced treatment strategies, and analyses for effectively treating EPs of more recent concerns. The objective of this review is to present the latest directions and advancements in membrane-based technologies for addressing EPs. By highlighting the progress in this field, we aim to share valuable perspectives with researchers and contribute to the development of future directions in sustainable treatments for EPs.

Catalytic polymer nanocomposites for environmental remediation of wastewater

The removal of harmful chemicals and species from water, soil, and air is a major challenge in environmental remediation, and a wide range of materials have been studied in this regard. To identify the optimal material for particular applications, research is still ongoing. Polymer nanocomposites (PNCs), which combine the benefits of nanoparticles with polymers, an alternative to conventional materials, may open up new possibilities to overcome this difficulty. They have remarkable mechanical capabilities and compatibility due to their polymer matrix with a very high surface area to volume ratio brought about by their special physical and chemical properties, and the extremely reactive surfaces of the nanofillers. Composites also provide a viable answer to the separation and reuse problems that hinder nanoparticles in routine use. Understanding these PNCs materials in depth and using them in practical environmental applications is still in the early stages of development. The review article demonstrates a crisp introduction to the PNCs with their advantageous properties as a catalyst in environmental remediation. It also provides a comprehensive explanation of the design procedure and synthesis methods for fabricating PNCs and examines in depth the design methods, principles, and design techniques that guide proper design. Current developments in the use of polymer nanocomposites for the pollutant treatment using three commonly used catalytic processes (catalytic and redox degradation, electrocatalytic degradation, and biocatalytic degradation) are demonstrated in detail. Additionally, significant advances in research on the aforementioned catalytic process and the mechanism by which contaminants are degraded are also amply illustrated. Finally, there is a summary of the research challenges and future prospects of catalytic PNCs in environmental remediation.

Immobilized glucoamylase based on ZIF-8: Preparation, response surface optimization, characterization

The glucoamylase@ZIF-8 was prepared using ZIF-8 material as the carrier in this study. The preparation process was optimized by response surface methodology, and the stability of glucoamylase@ZIF-8 was determined. The material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that the optimum preparation process of glucoamylase@ZIF-8 was 1.65 mol 2-methylimidazole, 5.85 mL glucoamylase, 33°C stirring temperature, 90 min stirring time, and 84.0230% ± 0.6006% embedding rate. At 100°C, the free glucoamylase completely lost its activity, whereas the glucoamylase@ZIF-8 still had a retained enzyme activity of 12.0123% ± 0.86158%; at pH 3-6, the highest activity of glucoamylase@ZIF-8 was 95.9531% ± 0.96181%, and about 80% of glucoamylase activity could be retained under alkaline conditions. When the ethanol concentration was 13%, the retained enzyme activity was 7.9316% ± 0.19805%, significantly higher than free enzymes. The K_m of glucoamylase@ZIF-8 and free enzyme were 1235.6825 and 80.317 mg/mL, respectively. V_max was 0.2453 and 0.149 mg/(mL min), respectively. The appearance, crystal strength, and thermal stability of glucoamylase@ZIF-8 were improved after optimization, and they had high reusability.

Combining Ultrafiltration and Nanofiltration to Obtain a Concentrated Extract of Purified Polyphenols from Wet Olive Pomace

Despite the environmental concerns raised every year by the generation of high volumes of wet olive pomace, it contains valuable phenolic compounds that are essential for the valorization of this by-product. In this work, an integrated process to recover phenolic compounds from wet olive pomace is proposed. It consists of ultrasound-assisted solid-liquid extraction, followed by ultrafiltration and nanofiltration. Several commercial membranes were studied at different operational conditions. The ultrafiltration stage allowed the purification of biophenols, which were obtained in the permeate stream. Regarding organic matter, satisfactory rejection values were obtained with both commercial UH030 and UP005 membranes (Microdyn Nadir), but the latter provided more efficient purification and higher values of permeate flux, above 18 L·h^-1·m^-2 at 2.5 bar and 1.5 m·s^-1. Later, this permeate stream was concentrated by means of a nanofiltration process, obtaining polyphenol rejection values that surpassed 85% with the commercial NF270 membrane (DuPont), then achieving the concentration of the previously purified polyphenols.

Recent advances in carbon-based nanomaterials for the treatment of toxic inorganic pollutants in wastewater

Wastewater contains inorganic pollutants, generated by industrial and domestic sources, such as heavy metals, antibiotics, and chemical pesticides, and these pollutants cause many environmental problems.

Membrane technology for pesticide removal from aquatic environment: Status quo and way forward

The noxious side effects of pesticides on human health and environment have prompted the search of effective and reliable treatment techniques for pesticide removal. The removal of pesticides can be accomplished through physical, chemical and biologicals. Physical approaches such as filtration and adsorption are prevailing pesticide removal strategies on account of their effectiveness and ease of operation. Membrane-based filtration technology has been recognized as a promising water and wastewater treatment approach that can be used for a wide range of organic micropollutants including pesticides. Nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (RO) and forward osmosis (FO) have been increasingly explored for pesticide removal from aquatic environment owing to their versatility and high treatment efficiencies. This review looks into the remedial strategies of pesticides from aqueous environment using membrane-based processes. The potentials and applications of three prevailing membrane processes, namely NF, RO and FO for the treatment of pesticide-containing wastewater are discussed in terms of the development of advanced membranes, separation mechanisms and system design. The challenges in regards to the practical implementation of membrane-based processes for pesticide remediation are identified. The corresponding research directions and way forward are highlighted. An in depth understanding of the pesticide nature, water chemistry and the pesticide-membrane interactions is the key to achieving high pesticide removal efficiency. The integration of membrane technology and conventional removal technologies represents a new dimension and the future direction for the treatment of wastewater containing recalcitrant pesticides.

Altered zirconium dioxide based photocatalyst for enhancement of organic pollutants degradation: A review

Heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes are a promising approach for cost-efficient removal of pollutants using semiconductors. Zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂) is an auspicious material for photocatalytic activity owning to its suitable bandgap, stability, and low cost. However, ZrO₂ suffers from fast recombination rate, and poor light harvesting ability. Nonetheless, extra modification has also shown improvements and therefore is worth investigating. The endeavour of this paper initially discusses the fundamentals with respect to reactive species, classification, and synthesis methods for ZrO₂. Furthermore, with particular consideration to stability and reusability, several additional modification approaches for ZrO₂-based photocatalysts such as doping and noble metals loading. Furthermore, the formation of heterojunctions has also been shown to boost photocatalytic activity while inhibiting charge carrier recombination. Finally, photocatalyst separation via magnetic-based photocatalysts are elucidated. As a result, ZrO₂-based photocatalysts are regarded as a promising emerging technology that warrants further development and research.

Advances in the application of immobilized enzyme for the remediation of hazardous pollutant: A review

Nowadays, ecofriendly, low-cost, and sustainable alternatives techniques have been focused on the effective removal of hazardous pollutants from the water streams. In this context, enzyme immobilization seems to be of specific interest to several researchers to develop novel, effective, greener, and hybrid strategies for the removal of toxic contaminants. Immobilization is a biotechnological tool, anchoring the enzymes on support material to enhance the stability and retain the structural conformation of enzymes for catalysis. Recyclability and reusability are the main merits of immobilized enzymes over free enzymes. Studies showed that immobilized enzyme laccase can be used up to 7 cycles with 66% efficiency, peroxidase can be recycled to 2 cycles with 50% efficiency, and also cellulase to 3 cycles with 91% efficiency. In this review, basic concepts of immobilization, different immobilization techniques, and carriers used for immobilization are summarized. In addition to that, the potential of immobilized enzymes as the bioremediation agents for the effective degradation of pollutants from the contaminated zone and the impact of different operating parameters are summarized in-depth. Further, this review provides future trends and challenges that have to be solved shortly for enhancing the potential of immobilized systems for large-scale industrial wastewater treatment.

Reagent-Free Immobilization of Industrial Lipases to Develop Lipolytic Membranes with Self-Cleaning Surfaces

Biocatalytic membrane reactors combine the highly efficient biotransformation capability of enzymes with the selective filtration performance of membrane filters. Common strategies to immobilize enzymes on polymeric membranes are based on chemical coupling reactions. Still, they are associated with drawbacks such as long reaction times, high costs, and the use of potentially toxic or hazardous reagents. In this study, a reagent-free immobilization method based on electron beam irradiation was investigated, which allows much faster, cleaner, and cheaper fabrication of enzyme membrane reactors. Two industrial lipase enzymes were coupled onto a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) flat sheet membrane to create self-cleaning surfaces. The response surface methodology (RSM) in the design-of-experiments approach was applied to investigate the effects of three numerical factors on enzyme activity, yielding a maximum activity of 823 ± 118 U m⁻² (enzyme concentration: 8.4 g L⁻¹, impregnation time: 5 min, irradiation dose: 80 kGy). The lipolytic membranes were used in fouling tests with olive oil (1 g L⁻¹ in 2 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate), resulting in 100% regeneration of filtration performance after 3 h of self-cleaning in an aqueous buffer (pH 8, 37 °C). Reusability with three consecutive cycles demonstrates regeneration of 95%. Comprehensive membrane characterization was performed by determining enzyme kinetic parameters, permeance monitoring, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and zeta potential, as well as water contact angle measurements.
