Ethylenediamine-β-cyclodextrin modified graphene oxide nanocomposite membranes for highly efficient chiral separation of tryptophan and propranolol enantiomers

Maltodextrin-modified graphene oxide composite membrane applied to the enantioseparation of amino acids

The separation of enantiomers using chiral membranes has garnered much research interest. In this study, the enantioseparation of amino acids using chiral membranes, namely graphene oxide-ethylenediamine-maltodextrin (GO-EDA-MD) and GO-EDA-hydroxypropyl-MD (GO-EDA-HP-MD), was evaluated. HP-MD and MD were investigated as chiral selectors due to their inherent chirality. Various characterization techniques, including atomic force microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, field emission scanning electron microscopy, water contact angle analysis, tensile properties, and thermal gravimetric analysis were employed to analyze the membrane structures. The evaluation of enantioseparation performance was conducted by employing tryptophan, phenylalanine, and tyrosine enantiomers. Optimal conditions for enantiomer separation were achived using a GO-EDA-HP-MD chiral composite (1.75 wt%), a feed concentration of 10 mg/L for each enantiomer, a separation time of 15 min, and a membrane effective surface area of 1.0 cm2. Also, the bovine serum albumin rejection was 90.0 %, and the water flux reached 37.1 L m-2 h-1. The highest enantiomeric excess (ee.%) values were 46.33 %, 76.97 %, and 73.04 % for tryptophan, phenylalanine, and tyrosine, respectively. The impact of voltage on ee.% and substance flux was also explored. This membrane was able to separate enantiomers successfully.

Synthesis of chiral graphene structures and their comprehensive applications: a critical review

From a molecular viewpoint, chirality is a crucial factor in biological processes. Enantiomers of a molecule have identical chemical and physical properties, but chiral molecules found in species exist in one enantiomer form throughout life, growth, and evolution. Chiral graphene materials have considerable potential for application in various domains because of their unique structural framework, properties, and controlled synthesis, including chiral creation, segregation, and transmission. This review article provides an in-depth analysis of the synthesis of chiral graphene materials reported over the past decade, including chiral nanoribbons, chiral tunneling, chiral dichroism, chiral recognition, and chiral transfer. The second segment focuses on the diverse applications of chiral graphene in biological engineering, electrochemical sensors, and photodetectors. Finally, we discuss research challenges and potential future uses, along with probable outcomes.

Removal of endocrine disruptors and pharmaceuticals by graphene oxide-based membranes in water: A review

Membrane-based water treatment has emerged as a promising solution to address global water challenges. Graphene oxide (GO) has been successfully employed in membrane filtration processes owing to its reversible properties, large-scale production potential, layer-to-layer stacking, great oxygen-based functional groups, and unique physicochemical characteristics, including the creation of nano-channels. This review evaluates the separation performance of various GO-based membranes, manufactured by coating or interfacial polymerization with different support layers such as polymer, metal, and ceramic, for endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) and pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs). In most studies, the addition of GO significantly improved the removal efficiency, flux, porosity, hydrophilicity, stability, mechanical strength, and antifouling performance compared to pristine membranes. The key mechanisms involved in contaminant removal included size exclusion, electrostatic exclusion, and adsorption. These mechanisms could be ascribed to the physicochemical properties of compounds, such as molecular size and shape, hydrophilicity, and charge state. Therefore, understanding the removal mechanisms based on compound characteristics and appropriately adjusting the operational conditions are crucial keys to membrane separation. Future research directions should explore the characteristics of the combination of GO derivatives with various support layers, by tailoring diverse operating conditions and compounds for effective removal of EDCs and PhACs. This is expected to accelerate the development of surface modification strategies for enhanced contaminant removal.

Study of the Enantioselectivity and Recognition Mechanism of Allyl-β-CD Modified Organic Polymer Monolithic Capillary Column

Allyl-β-CD was synthesized and used as the chiral functional monomer to prepare chiral organic polymer monolithic columns in capillary HPLC. First, the enantioselectivity of the prepared allyl-β-CD modified organic polymer monolithic capillary columns was investigated. Then, the influences of enantioseparation conditions of chiral drugs were further explored. Finally, the recognition mechanism was studied by molecular docking with AutoDock. Complete enantioseparations of four chiral drugs as well as partial enantioseparations of eight chiral drugs have been achieved. Results showed that the RSD values for run-to-run, day-to-day, and column-to-column variations ranged from 1.2% to 4.6%, 1.4% to 4.7%, and 2.0% to 6.1%, respectively. The enantioselectivity factor rather than resolution is correlated with the binding free energy difference between enantiomers with allyl-β-CD. Furthermore, the abundant ether bonds, hydroxyl groups, and hydrophobic cavities in cyclodextrin are responsible for the enantioseparation ability of the chiral monolithic capillary columns.

Enantiomeric separation of tryptophan via novel chiral polyamide composite membrane

The separation of chiral drugs continues to pose a significant challenge. However, in recent years, the emergence of membrane-based chiral separation has shown promising effectiveness due to its environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and cost-effective characteristics. In this study, we prepared chiral composite membrane via interfacial polymerization (IP), utilizing β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and piperazine (PIP) as mixed monomers in the aqueous phase. The chiral separation process was facilitated by β-CD, serving as a chiral selective agent. The resulting membrane were characterized using SEM, FT-IR, and XPS. Subsequently, the chiral separation performance of the membrane for DL-tryptophan (Trp) was investigated. Lastly, the water flux, dye rejection, and stability of the membrane were also examined. The results showed that the optimized chiral PIP0.5β-CD0.5 membrane achieved an enantiomeric excess percentage (ee%) of 43.0% for D-Trp, with a solute flux of 66.18 nmol·cm-2·h-1, and maintained a good chiral separation stability. Additionally, the membrane demonstrated positive performance in the selective separation of mixed dyes, allowing for steady operation over a long period of time. This study offers fresh insights into membrane-based chiral separations.

From Sheep Track to Motorway: Supramolecular-Mediated 2D Nanofluidic Channels for Ultrafast Water Transport

Atomic thick 2D materials hold great potential as building blocks to construct highly permeable membranes, yet the permeability of laminar 2D material membranes is still limited by their irregularity sheep track-like interlayer channels. Herein, a supramolecular-mediated strategy to induce the regular assembly of high-throughput 2D nanofluidic channels based on host-guest interactions is proposed. Inspired by the characteristics of motorways, supramolecular-mediated ultrathin 2D membranes with broad and continuous regular water transport channels are successfully constructed using graphene oxide (GO) as an example. The prepared membrane achieves an ultrahigh water permeability (369.94 LMH bar-1) more than six times higher than that of the original membranes while maintaining dye rejection above 98.5%, which outperforms the reported 2D membranes. Characterization and simulation results show that the introduction of hyaluronate-grafted β-cyclodextrin not only expands the interlayer channels of GO membranes but also enables the membranes to operate stably under harsh conditions with the help of host-guest interactions. This universal supramolecular assembly strategy provides new opportunities for the preparation of 2D membranes with high separation performance and reliable and stable nanofluidic channels.

Supramolecular Interaction Modulation in Thermosensitive Composites: Enantiomeric Recognition and Chiral Site Regeneration

Herein, a novel strategy was implemented to modulate the supramolecular interaction between enantiomers and chiral recognition sites (CRSs), effectively resolving the issue of CRS saturation. Randomly methylated-β-cyclodextrin (Rm-β-CD) was used as the CRS (host molecule), and polymerized ionic liquids [poly([vbim]TFSI)] were used as the supramolecular modulator (guest molecule), which self-assembled to generate thermosensitive supramolecular host/guest complexes. The enantiomeric binding capacity and enantioselectivity of chiral separation systems centered on supramolecular host-guest complexes are characterized by a high degree of temperature dependence. Poly([vbim]TFSI) bonded to Rm-β-CD at temperatures between 17 °C ± 3 and 50 °C ± 3 °C, and the binding free energy difference (|ΔΔG|) between the (S)- and (R)-enantiomer was 0.55. Conversely, poly([vbim]TFSI detached from Rm-β-CD at temperatures >50 °C ± 3 °C or <17 °C ± 3 °C, and |ΔΔG| between (S)- and (R)-enantiomer was 0.03. The |ΔΔG| value of the (R)-enantiomer can reach 0.86 in two temperature intervals. Therefore, the binding of poly([vbim]TFSI) to Rm-β-CD afforded the favorable separation of four racemic sample mixtures: mandelic acid (e.e.% = 61.3%), ibuprofen (e.e.% = 21.6%), warfarin (e.e.% = 14.9%), and naproxen (e.e% = 18.2%). The detachment of poly([vbim]TFSI) from Rm-β-CD released the enantiomer bound to CRSs. The decomplexation of mandelic acid reached 75.1%.

Strategies for chiral separation: from racemate to enantiomer

Chiral separation has become a crucial topic for effectively utilizing superfluous racemates synthesized by chemical means and satisfying the growing requirements for producing enantiopure chiral compounds. However, the remarkably close physical and chemical properties of enantiomers present significant obstacles, making it necessary to develop novel enantioseparation methods. This review comprehensively summaries the latest developments in the main enantioseparation methods, including preparative-scale chromatography, enantioselective liquid-liquid extraction, crystallization-based methods for chiral separation, deracemization process coupling racemization and crystallization, porous material method and membrane resolution method, focusing on significant cases involving crystallization, deracemization and membranes. Notably, potential trends and future directions are suggested based on the state-of-art "coupling" strategy, which may greatly reinvigorate the existing individual methods and facilitate the emergence of cross-cutting ideas among researchers from different enantioseparation domains.

Tailoring the performance of composite PEI nanofiltration membranes via incorporating activated cyclodextrins

Cyclodextrins (CDs) with unique cavity structures have been used as materials for nanofiltration membrane fabrications. In the present work, the activated CD (O-CD), oxidated by NaIO4, and polyethyleneimine (PEI) were co-deposited on a hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile support, post-treated by glycerol protection and heating treatment, to prepare nanofiltration membranes with low molecular weight cut-off (MWCO). As the cavities in CD present and the aldehyde groups introduced after oxidation, the O-CDs were expected to crosslink the PEI layer and provide extra permeating channels. The filtration experiments showed that the incorporation of O-CDs improved the permeances of the O-CD-PEI/HPAN nanofiltration membranes. The performance can be tailored by the control of the loading or the oxidation degree of the O-CD. At optimal conditions, the permeance increment was nearly double (from 9.2 to 21.1 Lm-2·h-1·bar-1). While the selectivity was without significant sacrifice, the rejection of PEG 200 remained around 90%. Meanwhile, the membrane stability was demonstrated by pro-longed filtratiing a PEG 200 aqueous solution. The constant permeance and rejection confirmed the O-CD-PEI/HPAN membranes were stable. The incorporation of activated CD in PEI offers a facile strategy to promote the permeance of PEI-based membranes.

Enantioseparation Membranes: Research Status, Challenges, and Trends

The purity of enantiomers plays a critical role in human health and safety. Enantioseparation is an effective way and necessary process to obtain pure chiral compounds. Enantiomer membrane separation is a new chiral resolution technique, which has the potential for industrialization. This paper mainly summarizes the research status of enantioseparation membranes including membrane materials, preparation methods, factors affecting membrane properties, and separation mechanisms. In addition, the key problems and challenges to be solved in the research of enantioseparation membranes are analyzed. Last but not least, the future development trend of the chiral membrane is expected.
