Adsorptive removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions: Progress of adsorbents development and their effectiveness

Increased levels of heavy metals (HMs) in aquatic environments poses serious health and ecological concerns. Hence, several approaches have been proposed to eliminate/reduce the levels of HMs before the discharge/reuse of HMs-contaminated waters. Adsorption is one of the most attractive processes for water decontamination; however, the efficiency of this process greatly depends on the choice of adsorbent. Therefore, the key aim of this article is to review the progress in the development and application of different classes of conventional and emerging adsorbents for the abatement of HMs from contaminated waters. Adsorbents that are based on activated carbon, natural materials, microbial, clay minerals, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI), graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are critically reviewed, with more emphasis on the last four adsorbents and their nanocomposites since they have the potential to significantly boost the HMs removal efficiency from contaminated waters. Furthermore, the optimal process conditions to achieve efficient performance are discussed. Additionally, adsorption isotherm, kinetics, thermodynamics, mechanisms, and effects of varying adsorption process parameters have been introduced. Moreover, heavy metal removal driven by other processes such as oxidation, reduction, and precipitation that might concurrently occur in parallel with adsorption have been reviewed. The application of adsorption for the treatment of real wastewater has been also reviewed. Finally, challenges, limitations and potential areas for improvements in the adsorptive removal of HMs from contaminated waters are identified and discussed. Thus, this article serves as a comprehensive reference for the recent developments in the field of adsorptive removal of heavy metals from wastewater. The proposed future research work at the end of this review could help in addressing some of the key limitations facing this technology, and create a platform for boosting the efficiency of the adsorptive removal of heavy metals.

Removal of contaminants present in water and wastewater by cyclodextrin-based adsorbents: A bibliometric review from 1993 to 2022

Cyclodextrin (CD), a cyclic oligosaccharide from enzymatic starch breakdown, plays a crucial role in pharmaceuticals, food, agriculture, textiles, biotechnology, chemicals, and environmental applications, including water and wastewater treatment. In this study, a statistical analysis was performed using VOSviewer and Citespace to scrutinize 2038 articles published from 1993 to 2022. The investigation unveiled a notable upsurge in pertinent articles and citation counts, with China and USA contributing the highest publication volumes. The prevailing research focus predominantly revolves around the application of CD-based materials used as adsorbents to remove conventional contaminants such as dyes and metals. The CD chemistry allows the construction of materials with various architectures, including cross-linked, grafted, hybrid or supported systems. The main adsorbents are cross-linked CD polymers, including nanosponges, fibres and hybrid composites. Additionally, research efforts are actually concentrated on the synthesis of CD-based membranes, CD@graphene oxide, and CD@TiO2. These materials are proposed as adsorbents to remove emerging pollutants. By employing bibliometric analysis, this study delivers a comprehensive retrospective review and synthesis of research concerning CD-based adsorbents for the removal of contaminants from wastewater, thereby offering valuable insights for future large-scale application of CD-based adsorption materials.

Small Channels Assembled by Multilayer ZIF-8 in Nanocomposite Membranes for Filtration of Ofloxacin in Water

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based hybrid membranes still face many unsolved difficulties in the field of liquid separation, with a reliable production technique standing out, in particular, for the water-stable MOF membranes. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) with acceptable water stability, favorable polymer affinity, and high selectivity was meticulously grafted on commercial poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) via substrate carboxylation-assisted etching and then overlaid onto PVDF to fabricate a novel hybrid membrane by a layer-by-layer self-assembly method. The optimal membrane manufacturing conditions, including assembly time (10 min), Hmim/Zn2+ molar ratio (8:1), and optimal layer number (three layers), were thoroughly investigated for cutting-off ofloxacin in water filtration. Under low pressure, a nanofiltration scale permeability of about 199.2 L m-2 h-1 MPa-1 and 97.9% rejection of ofloxacin were obtained in bench-scale tests based on the synergistic effect of the Donnan effect and steric hindrance. More significantly, the resulting hybrid membrane demonstrated excellent hydrophilicity, high antifouling, and mechanical and repeatability performances, suggesting promising application possibilities in real-world wastewater filtering settings.

Substantial and efficient adsorption of heavy metal ions based on protein and polyvinyl alcohol nanofibers by electrospinning

The adverse effects of heavy metal pollutants in wastewater have threatened human health in recent decades. Therefore, the development of absorbents for such pollutants is essential to overcome these problems. Electrospun nanofibers are often used for wastewater treatment owing to their high porosity and high specific surface area. Zein from plants and collagen from animals are vulnerable to moisture, which limits its broad application in practice. However fully biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which is soluble in water, can be mixed with protein individually to overcome the limitation. In this work, the two proteins described above and PVA were combined to prepare protein nanofibers by electrospinning technology, which could achieve adsorption of Cu2+. As the protein content increased, the adsorption properties of the obtained nanofibers for Cu2+ showed a rising and then decreasing trend, with the highest point at 50 % of protein content, especially the collagen nanofibers, which reached 24.62 mg/g. Both protein nanofibers reached adsorption equilibrium after 15 h, but overall, collagen nanofibers showed a superior adsorption performance for Cu2+ than that by zein nanofibers. In the process of Cu2+ adsorption by protein nanofibers, both physical and chemical effect existed, and the physical effect played the leading role.

A review on hybrid membrane-adsorption systems for intensified water and wastewater treatment: Process configurations, separation targets, and materials applied

In the era of rapid and conspicuous progress of water treatment technologies, combined adsorption and membrane filtration systems have gained great attention as a novel and efficient method for contaminant removal from aqueous phase. Further development of these techniques for water/wastewater treatment applications will be promising for the recovery of water resources as well as reducing the water tension throughout the world. This review introduces the state-of-the-art on the capabilities of the combined adsorption-membrane filtration systems for water and wastewater treatment applications. Technical information including employed materials, superiorities, operational limitations, process sustainability and upgradeing strategies for two general configurations i.e. hybrid (pre-adsorption and post-adsorption) and integrated (film adsorbents, low pressure membrane-adsorption coupling and membrane-adsorption bioreactors) systems has been surveyed and presented. Having a systematic look at the fundamentals of hybridization/integration of the two well-established and efficient separation methods as well as spotlighting the current status and prospectives of the combination strategies, this work will be valuable to all the interested researchers working on design and development of cutting-edge wastewater/water treatment techniques. This review also draws a clear roadmap for either decision making and choosing the best alternative for a specific target in water treatment or making a plan for further enhancement and scale-up of an available strategy.

Facile degradation of chitosan-sodium alginate-chromium (III) gel in relation to leather re-tanning and filling

Natural polysaccharide hydrogel, exemplified by chitosan‑sodium alginate (CS-SA), has been prevailing in adsorption of chromium (III) (Cr(III)) containing contaminant. However, the traditional desorption of CS-SA-Cr(III) to recycle the adsorbent faces the problems including chemical desorbents secondary pollution, resource waste of the terminal CS-SA adsorbents, and tedious work of reusing the desorbed Cr(III). Herein, the adsorption product, CS-SA-Cr(III) gel, was degraded to CS/SA/Cr(III) sol and applied in leather re-tanning and filling processes directly. To achieve this goal, three degradation methods were used to transform the gel to sol. Due to the excellent overall performance of the CS/SA/Cr(III)-HMD₄ sol (obtained by the hydrothermal-mechanical degradation method for 4 h (HMD₄)), including wide size and distribution range, moderate viscosity (54 ± 3.1 mPa·s), high electronegativity (-38.6 ± 5.8 mV), and good stability, the resultant leather after re-tanning and filling by the sol achieved fascinating properties such as good thermal stability (T_s, 116.8 ± 1.8 °C; T_d, 94.2 ± 1.7 °C), mechanical performance (tensile strength, 6.9 ± 0.52 MPa; elongation at break, 95 ± 3.0 %), and superduper thickening rate (31.8 %). Moreover, the mechanism of good re-tanning and filling effects was deciphered. Therefore, this work intends to overcome the limitation of traditional desorption technology and further realizes the high-valued application of the exhausted CS-SA-Cr(III) in leather re-tanning and filling processes.

Recent development and application of membrane chromatography

Membrane chromatography is mainly used for the separation and purification of proteins and biological macromolecules in the downstream processing process, also applications in sewage disposal. Membrane chromatography is recognized as an effective alternative to column chromatography because it significantly improves chromatography from affinity, hydrophobicity, and ion exchange; the development status of membrane chromatography in membrane matrix and membrane equipment is thoroughly discussed, and the applications of protein capture and intermediate purification, virus, monoclonal antibody purification, water treatment, and others are summarized. This review will provide value for the exploration and potential application of membrane chromatography.
