Amorphous metal-organic framework UiO-66-NO2 for removal of oxyanion pollutants: Towards improved performance and effective reusability

Deep eutectic solvent-functionalized amorphous UiO-66 for efficient extraction and ultrasensitive analysis of perfluoroalkyl substances in infant milk powder

In this study, a convenient and effective method for determination of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in infant formula was developed based on a novel dispersive solid-phase extraction using deep eutectic solvent-functionalized amorphous UiO-66 (DES/aUiO-66) as sorbent. The synthesis of materials could be achieved without the use of complex and environmentally unfriendly procedures. Parameters were systematically investigated to establish a simple, fast, and efficient green pretreatment method. The method demonstrated high sensitivity, good precision, a detection limit of 0.330-0.529 ng·kg-1, and low matrix effects (< 12.8%). The mechanism for this material was elucidated by ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and quantum chemistry calculations. The presence of massive pore structures and collectively synergistic binding sites facilitated affinity adsorption toward PFASs. Finally, this method was applied to the monitoring of PFASs in 10 actual milk powder samples. This groundbreaking approach opens new possibilities for the advancement of analytical techniques and food safety monitoring.

Synthetic and analytical considerations for the preparation of amorphous metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are hybrid porous materials presenting several tuneable properties, allowing them to be utilised for a wide range of applications. To date, focus has been on the preparation of novel crystalline MOFs for specific applications. Recently, interest in amorphous MOFs (aMOFs), defined by their lack of correlated long-range order, is growing. This is due to their potential favourable properties compared to their crystalline equivalents, including increased defect concentration, improved processability and gas separation ability. Direct synthesis of these disordered materials presents an alternative method of preparation to post-synthetic amorphisation of a crystalline framework, potentially allowing for the preparation of aMOFs with varying compositions and structures, and very different properties to crystalline MOFs. This perspective summarises current literature on directly synthesised aMOFs, and proposes methods that could be utilised to modify existing syntheses for crystalline MOFs to form their amorphous counterparts. It outlines parameters that could discourage the ordering of crystalline MOFs, before examining the potential properties that could emerge. Methodologies of structural characterisation are discussed, in addition to the necessary analyses required to define a topologically amorphous structure.

Facile fabrication of amorphous Al/Fe based metal-organic framework as effective heterogeneous fenton catalyst for environmental remediation

This study presents a facile preparation and durable amorphous Fe and Al-based MOF nanoplate (AlFe-BTC MOFs) catalyst with notable stability in Fenton reactions. Rigorous characterization using XRD, HR-TEM, and BET confirms the amorphous nature of the synthesized AlFe-BTC MOFs, revealing mesopores (3.4 nm diameter), a substantial surface area (232 m2/g), and a pore volume of 0.69 cc/g. XPS analysis delineates distinct Al2p and Fe2p binding energy values, signifying specific chemical bonding. FE-SEM elemental mapping elucidates the distinctive distribution of Fe and Al within the framework of AlFe-BTC MOFs. In catalytic activity testing, the amorphous AlFe-BTC MOFs exhibited outstanding performance, achieving complete degradation of Methylene blue (MB) dye and 78% TOC removal over 45 min of treatment under mild reaction conditions. The catalyst's durability was assessed, revealing about 75% TOC removal and complete dye decomposition over five successive recycles, with less than 1 mg/L of Fe and Al leaching. UV-Vis spectra revealed the destruction of MB dye over multiple recycling studies. Based on this finding, the amorphous AlFe-BTC MOF nanoplates emerge as a promising solution for efficient dye removal from industrial wastewater, underscoring their potential in advanced environmental remediation processes.

Functional UiO-66 for highly selective adsorption of N-nitrosodipropylamine: adsorption performance and mechanisms

N-Nitrosodipropylamine (NDPA) is a class of nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs) with high toxicity. Although NDPA present in water bodies is at relatively low concentrations, the potential risk is high due to its high toxicity and bioaccumulation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a new type of porous material with remarkable functionality, have shown great performance in a wide variety of applications in adsorption. This is the first study investigating the adsorption of MOFs on NDPA. Herein, UiO-66 with -NH2 and imidazolium functional groups were synthesized by modifying UiO-66 after amination. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm models were used to compare the adsorption properties of the two materials for low-concentration NDPA in water. The results showed that the behavior of all the adsorbents was consistent with the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order model and that the adsorption was homogeneous chemisorption. The structures of the nanoparticles were characterized by FTIR, zeta potential, XRD, SEM and BET measurements. Based on the characteristics, four adsorption mechanisms, namely electron conjugation, coordination reaction, anion-π interaction, and van der Waals forces, were simultaneously involved in the adsorption. The influencing factor experiment revealed that the adsorption of UiO-66-NH2 and (I-)Meim-UiO-66 involved hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, respectively.
