External optimization of Zr-MOF with mercaptosuccinic acid for efficient recovery of gold from solution: Adsorption performance and DFT calculation

Diamino-functionalized metal-organic framework for selective capture of gold ions

Adsorptive recovery of valuable gold (Au) ions from wastes is vital but still challenged, especially regarding adsorption capacity and selectivity. A novel M - 3,5-DABA metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbent was prepared via anchoring 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (3,5-DABA) molecule in the MOF-808 matrix. Benefiting from the positive charge property, dense amino groups (3.2 mmol g-1) and high porosity, the adsorption capacity of M - 3,5-DABA reaches 1391.5 mg g-1 (pH = 2.5) and adsorption equilibrium is attained in 5 min. This amino-based material shows excellent selectivity towards various metal ions, evading the poor selectivity problem of classical thiol groups (e.g. for Ag+, Cu2+, Pb2+ and Hg2+ ions). In addition, the regeneration was easily achieved via using a hydrochloric acid-thiourea eluent. Experimental analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculation show the amino group works as a reductant for Au(III) ions and meanwhile acts as an active site for adsorbing Au(III) ions together with the μ-OH group. Thus, M - 3,5-DABA can act as a potential adsorbent for Au(III) ions, and our work offers a viable strategy to construct novel MOF-based adsorbents.

Antimicrobial polymer-based zeolite imidazolate framework composite membranes for uranium extraction from wastewater and seawater

Extraction uranium (VI) (U(VI)) from wastewater and seawater is highly important for environmental protection and life safety, but it remains a great challenge. In this work, the growth of the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles on the tannic acid (TA)-3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) modified PVDF (TAP) membrane was designed to obtain an excellent U(VI) adsorbent. The zeolite imidazolate framework composite membrane (TAPP-ZIF-60) was prepared through polyethyleneimine (PEI) bridging strategy and temperature regulation strategy in solvothermal method. The coordination bond between PEI and ZIF-8 and the covalent bond between PEI and TAP are essential in forming stable composite membrane. TAPP-ZIF with different properties was synthesized through a temperature regulation process and the TAPP-ZIF prepared at 60 °C has the uniform morphology and good performance. The adsorption capacity of TAPP-ZIF-60 is 153.68 mg/g (C0 = 95.01 mg/L and pH = 8.0) and water permeability is 5459 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. After ten adsorption-desorption cycles, it is proved that TAPP-ZIF-60 has good repeatability and stability. In addition, the TAPP-ZIF-60 composites membrane has a good inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) analysis reveal that the coordination between TAPP-ZIF-60 and uranyl ions is the primary factor contributing to the high adsorption capacity.

A 2D Acridine-Based Covalent Organic Framework for Selective Detection and Efficient Extraction of Gold from Complex Aqueous-Based Matrices

Developing candidate materials which possess the ability of both selective detection and efficient capture of precious metal gold is highly desirable for environment and economy. However, most of reported materials only focus on single function, which seriously restricts their practical application as probes or adsorbents. Herein, a two dimensional (2D) acridine-based covalent organic framework (TpDa-COF) is prepared via the linkage of imine bonds for gold detection and adsorption. The synthesized COF can achieve both fluorescence and colorimetric dual sensing for Au3+ in a low concentration range (0.1-1.5 ppm) with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.036 ppm. Impressively, the selectivity of TpDa-COF for the detection of Au3+ is admirable (Fe3+, Fe2+ and Cu2+ for negligible influence on its fluorescence). In addition, TpDa-COF exhibits ultrahigh adsorption capacity of 982.5 mg ⋅ g-1 for gold at pH=4, which is attributed the synergistic effect of both selective coordination and reductive process of Au(III) to Au(0). Meanwhile, both positive entropy change (ΔS=76.07 J ⋅ mol-1 ⋅ K-1) and high distribution coefficient (Kd=12484.8 mL ⋅ g-1) confirm the good affinity between TpDa-COF framework and gold. This work gives us a new insight to prepare COF with pyridine nitrogen sites for gold detection and adsorption.

An O/N/S-rich porous Fe-based metal-organic framework (MOF) for gold recovery from the aqueous phase with excellent performance

Recovering gold from wastewater has both economic and environmental benefits. However, how to effectively recover it is challenging. In this work, a novel Fe-based metal-organic framework (MOF) was synthesized and decorated with 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid to have a well-developed porous architecture to effectively recover Au(III) from water. The maximum Au(III) sorption capacity by the finally-synthesized porous material MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA reached 2350 mg/g at pH = 6.00 ± 0.15, which is one of the highest among all literature-reported relevant materials including MOFs, and high sorption strength can be maintained within a wide pH range from 2.0 to 10.0. Besides, Au(III) sorption efficiency at low concentrations (i.e., 3.5 × 104 mg/mL) reached over 99%. Mechanically, outstanding Au(III) sorption by MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA resulted from the O/N/S-containing moieties on its surface, large surface area and porosity. The N- and S-containing functionalities (CS, CONH) served as electron donors to chelate Au(III). The O-containing (FeOFe, COFe, COOH, and coordinated H2O) and N-containing (CONH) moieties on MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA interacted with OH groups on the hydrolyzed species of Au(III) (AuCl3(OH)-, AuCl2(OH)2-, and AuCl(OH)3-) by hydrogen bond, which further increased Au(III) sorption. Furthermore, about 45.71% of Au(III) was reduced to gold nanoparticles by CS groups on the decorated 2,5-dithiophene dicarboxylic acid during sorption on MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA. Over 98.35% of Au(III) was selectively sorbed on MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA at pH 4.0, much higher than that of the coexisting heavy metal ions including Cu(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), and Ni(II) (< 5%), despite their same concentration at 0.01 mg/mL. Although sorption selectivity of a noble metal Pt(IV) by MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA is relatively poor (68.23%), it could be acceptable. Moreover, reusability of MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA is also excellent, since above 90.5% Au(III) still can be sorbed after two sorption-desorption cycles. Overall, excellent sorption performance and the roughly-calculated gold recycling benefits (26.30%) highlight that MIL-101(Fe)-TDCA is a promising porous material for gold recovery from the aqueous phase.

Modulating the pore and electronic structure for targeted recovery of platinum: Accelerated kinetic and reinforced coordination

Adsorption for recovery of low-concentration platinum (Pt) from the complex composition of acidic digestates was challenging because of slow kinetic and poor affinity. It was expected to be overcome by the improvement of pore size distribution and adsorption site activity. Herein, a series of Prussian blue etchings (PBE) with porosity-rich and activity-high cyano (CN) was synthesized to recover low-concentration Pt. The N2 isotherm results showed that the pore structure evolved from mesoporous to microporous. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations results revealed that the modulation of electronic structure converted FeII to FeIII in [FeII(CN)6]4-. The coexistence of micro- and meso-pore structures provided channels to accelerate adsorption and ensured PtII enrichment. The regulation of Fe valence state activated CN, which reinforced the strength of coordination interaction between Pt and Fe-CN- at N-atom. The adsorption rate and maximum capacity of PBE1 were 4.4 and 2.5 times higher than those of PB, respectively, due to the dual efficacy of accelerated kinetic and reinforced coordination. This study systematically analyzes the pivotal role of pore and electronic structure modulation in adsorption kinetic and affinity, which provides a novel strategy for PtII targeted recovery.

Flumequine-mediated fluorescent zeolitic imidazolate framework functionalized by Eu3+ for sensitive and selective detection of UO22+, Ni2+ and Cu2+ in nuclear wastewater

Currently, antibiotics and heavy metal contaminants have posed a great threat for ecological security and human health. Herein, the lanthanide functionalized ZIF (named ZIF-90-PABA-Eu) is constructed by coordinating with Eu³⁺ via p-aminobenzoic acid intermediate. Due to the excellent fluorescence properties, the novel fluorescent probe can selectively monitor flumequine based on "turn on" mode. Furthermore, the obtained new material (named ZIF-90-PABA-Eu-Flu) can be used as "turn off" sensor for selective detection of both radioactive and nonradioactive heavy metal ions (UO₂²⁺, Ni²⁺ and Cu²⁺) which are the main component of nuclear industrial wastewater. ZIF-90-PABA-Eu-Flu shows ultra-short fluorescence response time (3 s) and ultra-low limit of detection (9.0 × 10^-3, 1.3 × 10^-2 and 6.1 × 10^-4 ppm) for three metal ions, which may be attributed to its good affinity with UO₂²⁺, Ni²⁺ and Cu²⁺. Moreover, principal component analysis (PCA) is applied to distinguish the three metal ions. Additionally, the possible sensing mechanism is investigated by the UV-vis spectra, luminescence lifetimes and theoretical calculation analysis. Based on these results, ZIF-90-PABA-Eu possesses promising potential in practical application and provides insight for the design of novel probes to continuously monitor flumequine, radioactive and nonradioactive heavy metal ions.

Design of Zr-MOFs by Introducing Multiple Ligands for Efficient and Selective Capturing of Pb(II) from Aqueous Solutions

The existence of lead ions seriously affects the quality of many metal products in metallurgical enterprises. Currently, the various methods of lead-ion removal tried by researchers will affect valuable metals in the removal process, thus resulting in low economic efficiency. In this study, a novel metal-organic framework adsorbent (UiO-FHD) which efficiently and selectively captures lead ions is developed by introducing multiple ligands. The maximum adsorption capacity of lead ions is 433.15 mg/g at pH 5. The adsorption process accords with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and the Langmuir isotherm models at room temperature. Thermodynamic experiments indicate that the removal of Pb(II) is facilitated by appropriate temperature reduction. The performance tests indicate that UiO-FHD maintains a high removal rate of 90.35% for Pb(II) after four consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. The distribution coefficient of lead ions (26.7 L/g) shows that UiO-FHD has excellent selective adsorption for lead ions. It is revealed that the chelation of the sulfhydryl groups and the electrostatic interaction of the hydroxyl groups are the dominant factors to improve the removal rate of Pb(II) by density functional theory calculations. This study clarifies the value of self-designed novel organic ligands in metal-organic framework materials that selectively capture heavy-metal ions.

Removal of Hg2+ in wastewater by grafting nitrogen/sulfur-containing molecule onto Uio-66-NH2: from synthesis to adsorption studies

The remediation of heavy metal deserves to be on the agenda, with the adsorbent design bearing the brunt of it. In this study, the molecule (4, 6-diamino-2-mercaptopyrimidine, DMP) containing thiol (-SH) and amino (-NH₂) functional groups was grafted onto Uio-66-NH₂, and a composite metal-organic framework nanomaterial (Zr(NH₂)-DMP) was synthesized via a facile post-modification scheme. The morphological characteristics and structural features of the modified adsorbent were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDS, BET, and XPS. The characterization results verified that the post-modification scheme was successfully achieved. The adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the removal performance of the Zr(NH₂)-DMP towards Hg²⁺ under different influencing parameters. The maximum adsorption capacity of 389.4 mg/g was obtained, and the adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 30 min at pH 6 at room temperature. Adsorption thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous. The Zr(NH₂)-DMP exhibited excellent selectivity for Hg²⁺, and also has the potential to remove Cu²⁺, Fe²⁺, and Zn²⁺ ions. The introduction of Cl^- inhibited the removal of Hg²⁺ due to the formation of mercuric chlorides (removal efficiency reduced from 97.8 to 95.6%). The removal efficiency of up to 86.7% was obtained after four cycles. The Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-second kinetic were more suitable for fitting the adsorption process of Hg²⁺ by Zr(NH₂)-DMP. The main removal mechanism could be attributed to the chelation between Hg²⁺ (soft acid) and nitrogen/sulfur (soft base) elements. These findings convinced that the successful synthesis of Zr(NH₂)-DMP provides an option for Hg²⁺ removal from wastewater.

Synthesis of mesoporous-structured MIL-68(Al)/MCM-41-NH2 for methyl orange adsorption: Optimization and Selectivity

Here, we report a novel amino-modified mesoporous-structured aluminum-based metal-organic framework adsorbent, MIL-68(Al)/MCM-41-NH₂, for dye sewage treatment. The introduction of molecular sieves overcomes the inherent defects of microporous MOFs in contaminant transfer and provides more active sites to enhance adsorption efficiency. Compared with using organic amino ligands directly, this strategy is ten times cheaper. The composite was well characterized and analyzed in terms of morphology, structure and chemical composition. Batch experiments were carried out to study the influences of essential factors on the process, such as pH and temperature. In addition, their interactions and the optimum conditions were examined using response surface methodology (RSM). The adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics were systematically elucidated. In detail, the adsorption process conforms to pseudo-second-order kinetics and follows the Sips and Freundlich isothermal models. Moreover, the maximum adsorption capacity Q_s of methyl orange (MO) was 477 mg g^-1. It could be concluded that the process was spontaneous, exothermic, and entropy-reducing. Several binary dye systems have been designed for selective adsorption research. Our material has an affinity for anionic pigments. The adsorption mechanisms were discussed in depth. The electrostatic interaction might be the dominant effect. Meanwhile, hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and pore filling might be important driving forces. The excellent thermal stability and recyclability of the adsorbent are readily noticed. After five reuse cycles, the composite still possesses a removal efficiency of 90% for MO. Overall, the efficient and low-cost composite can be regarded as a promising adsorbent for the selective adsorption of anionic dyes from wastewater.
