Abstract
Conventional oil-water separation membranes are difficult to establish a trade-off between membrane flux and separation efficiency, and often result in serious secondary contamination due to their fouling issue and non-degradability. Herein, a double drying strategy was introduced through a combination of oven-drying and freeze-drying to create a super-wettable and eco-friendly oil-water separating aerogel membrane (TMAdf). Due to the regular nacre-like structures developed in the drying process and the pores formed by freeze-drying, TMAdf aerogel membrane finally develops regularly arranged porous structures. In addition, the aerogel membrane possesses excellent underwater superoleophobicity with a contact angle above 168° and antifouling properties. TMAdf aerogel membrane can effectively separate different kinds of oil-water mixtures and highly emulsified oil-water dispersions under gravity alone, achieving exceptionally high flux (3693 L·m-2·h-1) and efficiency (99 %), while being recyclable. The aerogel membrane also displays stability and universality, making it effective in removing oil droplets from water in corrosive environments such as acids, salts and alkalis. Furthermore, TMAdf aerogel membrane shows long-lasting antibacterial properties (photothermal sterilization up to 6 times) and biodegradability (completely degraded after 50 days in soil). This study presents new ideas and insights for the fabrication of multifunctional membranes for oil-water separation.

Abstract
MXene, a recently emerged 2D material, has garnered substantial attention for a myriad of applications. Despite the growing interest, there remains a noticeable gap in exploring MXene-based membranes for the simultaneous achievement of photomodulated oil/water separation, bacterial resistance, and the removal of pollutants in the treatment of oily wastewater. In this work, we have successfully synthesized a novel multifunctional CuO@MXene-PAN nanofibrous membrane (NFM) featuring unique nanograin-like structures. Benefitting from these unique structures, the resultant membrane shows excellent superwetting properties, significantly enhancing its performance in oil/water separation. In addition, the membrane's photothermal property boosts its permeance by 40% under visible light illumination within 30 min. Furthermore, the resultant membrane shows decent dye removal efficiency in an aqueous solution, e.g., Rhodamine B (RhB), promoting efficient degradation with high reusability under visible light. Most remarkably, the resultant membrane exhibits superior anti-biofouling capability and consistently resists the adhesion of microorganisms such as cyanobacteria over a 14 day period. Thus, the combined effect of superior superwetting properties, photothermal responsivity, photocatalytic activity, and the antibacterial effect in CuO@MXene-PAN NFM contributes to the efficient treatment of intricate oily wastewater. This synergistic combination of superior properties in the membrane could be an appealing strategy for the broad development of multifunctional materials to prevent fouling during actual separation performance.

Abstract
The increasingly complex oily wastewater has become a severe environmental issue worldwide, calling for the eco-friendly methods toward multifunctionality, high efficiency and sustainability. This work presents a superwetting alginate-based aerogels prepared by a feasible mineralization without the assistance of intermediates. In this strategy, in-situ grown β-FeOOH nanoparticles on whole porous alginate aerogels, not only provides the hierarchical topography and more -OH groups, enhancing underwater oleophobicity (152 ± 4.4°) and fouling resistance of porous aerogels, but also endows with the outstanding photo-Fenton self-cleaning ability for pollutant degradation. As a result, the outstanding separation selectivity for oil and water (>99.5 %), and superior reusability is achieved without the significant diminution of permeation ability (897-1136 L·m-2·h-1). Furthermore, with the advantage of excellent photocatalytic performance under sunlight, the oily wastewater containing soluble organic pollutants can be remediated by simultaneous separation and photocatalysis decomposition under a gravity-driven filtration solely, revealing a promising potential for complex oily wastewater treatment with the rationally usage of sunlight.

Abstract
Membrane technologies in water and wastewater treatment have been eagerly pursued over the past decades, yet membrane fouling remains the major bottleneck to overcome. Membrane fouling control methods which couple membrane processes with online in situ application of external physical energy input (EPEI) are getting closer and closer to reality, thanks to recent advances in novel materials and energy deliverance methods. In this review, we summarized recent studies on membrane fouling control techniques that depend on (i) electric field, (ii) acoustic field, (iii) magnetic field, and (iv) photo-irradiation (mostly ultraviolet or visible light). Mechanisms of each energy input were first reported, which defines the applicability of these methods to certain wastewater matrices. Then, means of implementation were discussed to evaluate the compatibility of these fouling control methods with established membrane techniques. After that, preferred applications of each energy input to different foulant types and membrane processes in the experiment reports were summarized, along with a discussion on the trends and knowledge gaps of such fouling control research. Next, specific energy consumption in membrane fouling control and flux enhancement was estimated and compared, based on the experimental results reported in the literature. Lastly, strength and weakness of these methods and future perspectives were presented as open questions.

Abstract
One of the most dangerous types of pollution to the environment is oily wastewater, which is produced from a number of industrial sources and can cause damage to the environment, people, and creatures. To overcome this issue, membrane technology as an advanced method has been considered for treating oily wastewater due to its stability, high removal efficiency, and simplicity in scaling up. Membrane fouling, or the accumulation of oil droplets at or within the membrane pores, compromises the efficiency of membrane separation and water flux. In the last decade, the fabrication of membranes with specific wettability to reduce fouling has received much consideration. The purpose of this article is to offer a literature overview of all fabricated anti-fouling super(wetting and anti-wetting) membranes for applicable membrane processes for the separation of immiscible and emulsified oil/water mixtures. In this review, we first explain membrane fouling and discuss methods for preventing it. Afterwards, in all membrane separation processes, including pressure-driven, gravity-driven, and thermal-driven, membranes based on the form and density of oil are categorized as oil-removing or water-removing with special wettability, and then their wettability modification with different materials is particularly discussed. Finally, the prospect of anti-fouling membrane fabrication in the future is presented.

Abstract
Membrane separation is considered an effective approach to water purification. Nevertheless, membrane fouling dramatically decreases the separation efficiency and lifetime of membranes, thus limiting its further development and application. Herein, a multifunctional self-cleaning MIL-88A(Fe) decorated polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate (MIL-88A(Fe)@PVA-SA) nanofiber membrane was prepared by electrospinning and in-situ growth methods for the separation of oil/water emulsions and photo-Fenton degradation of dyes. The membrane possesses superhydrophilicity with a water contact angle (WCA) of 0° and superoleophobicity with underwater oil contact angle (UCA) of 161.7°, and exhibits superior separation efficiency (>99.5 %) and permeation flux (1140-2455 L/m2/h) for different oil/water emulsions. Moreover, the membrane exhibited an outstanding photo-Fenton performance under visible light, with degradation efficiencies (~99.9 %) towards methylene blue (MB) and reactive red 24 (RR24) within 90 min. Importantly, the membrane can be easily regenerated by simple rinsing and photo-Fenton self-cleaning treatment. In this study, MIL-88A(Fe)@PVA-SA nanofiber membrane has a promising application in dye removal and oil/water separation, providing a new idea to develop novel membrane materials.

Abstract
Confronting the pressing challenge of freshwater scarcity, polymeric membrane-based water treatment technology has emerged as an essential and effective approach. Poly(arylene ether)s (PAEs) polymers, a class of high-performance engineering thermoplastics, have garnered attention in recent decades as promising membrane materials for advanced water treatment approaches. The PAE-Based membranes are employed to resist the shortages of most common polymeric membranes, such as chemical instability, structural damage, membrane fouling, and shortened lifespan when deployed in harsh environments, owing to their excellent comprehensive performance. This article presents the advancements in the research of several typical PAEs, including poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK), polyethersulfone (PES), and poly(arylene ether nitrile) (PEN). Techniques for membrane formation, modification strategies, and applications in water treatment have been reviewed. The applications encompass processes for oil/water separation, desalination, and wastewater treatment, which involve the removal of heavy metal ions, dyes, oils, and other organic pollutants. The commendable performance of these membranes has been summarized in terms of corrosion resistance, high-temperature resistance, anti-fouling properties, and durability in challenging environments. In addition, several recommendations for further research aimed at developing efficient and robust PAE-based membranes are proposed.

Abstract
The uncontrolled release of nitrophenol and dye pollutants into water systems is an increasingly serious worldwide concern, and thus efficient wastewater treatment technologies are urgently needed. Herein we report a novel two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and/or nitrides (Ti3C2Tx MXene) membrane modified with silver nanowires (AgNWs) by vacuum assisted filtration technology for the ultrafast nitrophenol catalysis and water purification applications. Regular and controllable membrane transport channels were constructed by stacking Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets. Furthermore, the intercalation of AgNWs into the Ti3C2Tx MXene interlayer greatly enlarged the interlayer spacing, resulting in more gaps for fast and selective molecular transport. The optimized Ti3C2Tx MXene@AgNWs (M@A) membrane exhibited a water flux up to ∼191.9 L/(m2 h) while maintaining a high bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection of ∼95.4%. We emphatically used M@A membranes as efficient catalysts for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), and the results indicated that M@A-12% membrane exhibited the greatest catalytic reduction ability, and recycling utilization. M@A-12% membrane also had an antibacterial rate of more than 99% against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). This work provides a possibility to expand the application of 2D multifunctional M@A membranes in wastewater treatment and pollutant catalytic degradation.

Abstract
The settlement of microorganisms is an unwanted process in various practical fields, where also the first attaching microorganisms could promote other bacterial adhesion, causing an acceleration of bioaccumulation on the solid surface and damage to the surface functions. Developing an advanced composite coating with anti-microorganism attachment features is still a big challenge, and the critical element in any such method is to find an efficient functional agent for use in the coating system that could extend the service period. MXenes have received increasing attentions owing to their unique layer structure and large specific surface area. Increasing studies have been devoted to the development of MXene/polymer composites with creatively designed structures to realize various specific functions. Herein, two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbide material MXene as a carrier was etched and decorated with cellulose to enhance the anchor points to grasp functional Ag nanoparticles via a simple method. The MXene nanosheets (Ti3C2Tx) were modified by cellulose to graft hydroxy groups on their surface, and then they were incorporated into silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). The results showed that the cellulose could increase the loading content of the Ag NPs on the MXene surface, and also could act as a stabilized material to form the composite filler MXene@cellulose@Ag NPs (MAC), which could serve as a functional agent. Furthermore, the obtained product MAC filler exhibited excellent dispersibility and stability among all the tested fillers (MXene and MA), and it could help avoid aggregation and promote homogenous dispersal in the coating network. Besides, MAC displayed outstanding antibacterial activities against E. coli and S. aureus at the same concentration among all the fillers. When the filler was embedded into the coating system, the composite coating PCB-MAC possessed abundant active Ag+ ions released by the Ag NPs, which could work against bacterial growth and achieve a favorable antibacterial inhibition effect. Therefore, we believe that the active MAC filler maintained high antibacterial efficiency, evincing its potential as a desirable agent for obtaining an excellent anti-adhesive behavior in numerous broad applications, such as the environment field or medical area.

Abstract
Novel MXene-based two-dimensional (2D) membranes are widely used for water purification due to their highly controllable structure and antibacterial properties. However, in the process of membrane separation, the problems of membrane fouling, especially biological fouling, limits the further application of MXene-based membranes. In this study, in order to improve the antibacterial and separation properties of membranes, three kinds of MXene-based 2D-2D composite membranes (M2~M4) were prepared using polyethersulfone (PES) as the substrate, which were GO@MXene, O-g-C3N4@MXene and BiOCl@MXene composite membranes respectively. The results showed that the antibacterial activity of M2~M4 against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was further improved, especially the antibacterial ratio of M4 against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was up to 50% and 82.4%, respectively. By comparing the surface morphology of MXene membrane and modified membrane treated bacteria through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it was found that the cell density on modified membrane was significantly lower than that of pure MXene membrane.

Abstract
Membrane separation technology has potential for purifying emulsified oily wastewater. However, the oils, soluble organic substances, and microorganisms can cause complex membrane fouling problems, thereby reducing the separation efficiency and service life. Herein, a highly permeable and multiple-antifouling composite membrane was prepared using porous PAN fibrous mat as support backbone for the assembly of Ag-decorated Bi2O3 @ 3D MXene Schottky heterojunction and hydrophilic TA as the adhesive. The unique arrangement of 3D MXene heterojunction and hydrophilic functionalization effectively broke through the limitation of separation flux and synergistically enhanced the anti-fouling performance of membrane. Such fibrous composite membrane achieved an exceedingly high permeability (2717-3328 L·m-2·h-1) for various emulsified oils, while ensuring excellent oil/water emulsion retention rate (99.59%) and good cycle stability. Meanwhile, the composite membrane displayed favorable photocatalytic degradation performance toward degrading MeB (96.1%) and antibacterial ability. Furthermore, the MD simulation and free radical trapping experiments were carried out to unravel the molecular interactions during the separation process and the photocatalytic mechanism of composite membrane, respectively. Overall, the combination of photocatalytic self-cleaning, anti-oil adhesion, and antibacterial effect renders the membrane high permeability and multiple-antifouling performance, which provides a new strategy for dealing with complex oily wastewater in petrochemical industry.

Abstract
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a polymeric material with good biocompatibility, excellent hydrophilicity, and a large number of hydroxyl groups. However, due to its insufficient mechanical properties and poor inhibition of bacteria, it has a lack of applications in wound dressings, stent materials, and other fields. In this study, a simple method was used to prepare composite gel materials: Ag@MXene-HACC-PVA hydrogels with a double-network structure were prepared using an acetal reaction. Due to the double cross-linked interaction, the hydrogel has good mechanical properties and is resistant to swelling. The adhesion and bacterial inhibition were enhanced due to the addition of HACC. In addition, the strain sensing properties of this conductive hydrogel were stable, and the GF (specification factor) was 1.7617 at 40-90% strain. Therefore, the dual-network hydrogel with excellent sensing properties, adhesion properties, antibacterial properties, and cytocompatibility has potential applications in biomedical materials, especially as a tissue engineering repair material.
