Abstract
This study aimed to assess the milk production data for New Zealand dairy goats in either a standard lactation (SL; ≤305 d in milk [DIM]) or extended lactation (EL; >305 and ≤670 DIM) using a random regression (RR) with third- and fifth-order Legendre polynomials, respectively. Persistency of EL was defined as (B/A) × 100, where A was the accumulated yield from d 1 to 305, and B was the accumulated yield from d 366 to 670. On average, goats in SL produced 1,183 kg of milk, 37 kg of fat, 37 kg of protein, and 54 kg of lactose. The average production of milk, fat, protein, and lactose in EL were 2,473 kg, 78 kg, 79 kg, and 112 kg, respectively. The average persistences for milk, fat, protein, and lactose yields during EL were 98%, 98%, 102%, and 96%, respectively. The relative prediction errors were close to 10% and the concordance correlation coefficients >0.92, indicating that the RR model with Legendre polynomials is adequate for modeling lactation curves for both SL and EL. Total yields and persistency were analyzed with a mixed model that included the fixed effects (year, month of kidding, parity, and proportion of Saanen) as covariates and the random effects of animal and residual errors. Effects of year, month of kidding, and parity were significant on the total yields of milk, fat, protein, and lactose for both SL and EL. The total milk yield of first-parity goats with SL was 946 kg and the total milk yield of second-parity goats with SL was 1,284 kg, making a total of 2,230 kg over 2 years. The total milk yield of a first-parity goat with EL was 2,140 kg. Thus, on average, a goat with SL for the first and second parity produced 90 kg more milk than a first-parity goat subjected to EL. However, a second-parity goat subjected to EL produced 43 kg more milk (2,639 kg) than a goat with SL following the second and third parity (1,284 kg + 1,312 kg). These data, along with the various other benefits of EL (e.g., fewer offspring born and reduced risk of mastitis, lameness, and metabolic problems in early lactation), indicate that EL as a management strategy holds the potential to improve dairy goat longevity and lifetime efficiency without compromising milk production.

Abstract
Various studies have attempted to improve the milk yield and composition in dairy animals. However, no study has examined the effects of milking at different times on milk yield and composition. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the yield, composition, and antimicrobial components of milk obtained from milking at different times in lactating goats. Eight goats were milked once daily at different times for three consecutive weeks (first week: 06:00 h; second week: 09:00 h; and third week: 12:00 h). The light ranged from 06:30 to 19:00 h. Milk and blood samples were collected once a day during milking time. Milking at 09:00 h resulted in a significantly higher milk yield than that obtained after milking at 06:00 and 12:00 h. Prolactin levels in plasma and the fat, Na+, β-defensin, and S100A7 (antimicrobial component) levels in milk were the lowest in the 09:00 h milking. These results indicate that milk yield, composition, and antimicrobial components can be affected by milking time, which may be related to the altered concentration of prolactin in the blood. These findings provide a rational basis for achieving maximal milk production with strong immunity by changing to a more effective milking time.

Abstract
Simple Summary Short day length is associated with reduced milk yield in dairy ruminants possibly as animals prepare for the subsequent reproductive cycle. This study was conducted to determine the effect of an artificially increased daylength on milk production and ovulation in lactating goats. Increased daylength increased milk yield although the responses were only apparent during late lactation. Increased daylength reduced ovulation rate as lactation advanced although this reduction could be partially mitigated by exposing the lactating females to entire males. These findings suggest that artificially extending daylength can increase milk production and persistence while decreasing ovulatory activity in dairy goats. Abstract Short day length is associated with reduced milk production in dairy ruminants. Dairy ruminants have been kept in lit sheds during winter to extend the day length and stimulate milk production. However, there studies are few on the effect of an extended photoperiod on the ensuing reproductive performance of dairy goats. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of long day photoperiod (LDPP) and exposure to bucks on milk production and plasma progesterone and prolactin in dairy goats. The study was conducted in 122 non-pregnant lactating dairy goats over 18 weeks from April to August (late autumn and winter in the Southern Hemisphere). The goats were kept in open sided sheds in which the control treatment received ambient lighting while the LDPP treatment received 16 h of light, including artificial lighting. In June, July and August synchronised does were randomly assigned each month to the presence or absence of a buck and ovulatory activity determined from plasma progesterone. Plasma progesterone concentrations were reduced (0.73 vs. 0.46 pmol, p < 0.001) while prolactin concentrations were increased (0.095 vs. 1.33 ng/mL, p < 0.001) in LDPP goats. The former response was most marked in late winter (0.58 vs. 0.004 pmol, p < 0.001) indicating a lack of functional corpora lutea. While there was no overall effect of buck exposure on plasma progesterone concentrations there was a three-way interaction such that plasma progesterone concentrations were increased (p < 0.05) by exposure to bucks in LDPP goats in August (late winter) but not at other times. Milk production was increased in LDPP goats over the latter stages of the study (1. 55 vs. 1.82 L/d, p < 0.05). Also, persistency of lactation was greater in LDPP goats with fewer goats drying off (13 vs. 0%, p < 0.05). These findings suggest that LDPP can increase milk production and persistence while decreasing ovulatory activity in dairy goats.

Abstract
The aim of this observational study was to identify the influence of key nongenetic factors such as month of kidding, parity, and litter size on milk yield and composition of Australian dairy goats throughout lactation. The study was conducted over 4 consecutive kidding seasons from June 2016 to March 2017. Data from 940 lactations of Saanen goats from a commercial herd were used to observe the effects of month of kidding, parity number, and litter size on total milk yield (L/goat) in early lactation (kidding to 90 d in milk; DIM), mid lactation (91-180 DIM), and late lactation (181-270 DIM), cumulative milk yield (from kidding to 270 DIM; CMY), average lactation length, proportion (%) of does reaching their target lactation length (270 DIM), somatic cell count (SCC), and percentages of milk fat and protein in early lactation. The mean herd responses throughout the entire study were as follows: CMY = 519 L/goat; lactation length = 233 d, with 70% of does reaching 270 DIM; milk fat = 4.2%; milk protein = 2.9%; and SCC = 6.2 × 105 cells/mL. Average milk production peaked in February and was lowest in June (2.4 vs. 1.8 L/goat per day, respectively). Milk yield was affected by month of kidding, parity number, and litter size in all phases of lactation. November kidders had the greatest CMY, and March kidders had the lowest CMY. March kidders had the shortest lactation length and the lowest proportion of does reaching 270 DIM. June kidders had the longest lactation length, whereas September kidders had the highest proportion of does reaching 270 DIM. Maximum milk yield was attained in third parity. Goats in fourth or greater parity had the shortest lactation length, the lowest proportion of does reaching 270 DIM, and the highest SCC. Goats delivering single kids had lower CMY, lower SCC, and higher percentages of fat and protein than does delivering multiple kids. Our findings indicate that milk yield was primarily influenced by month of kidding, and the effects of month of kidding on milk yield were accentuated during mid lactation. However, the effects of month of kidding on milk yield varied significantly among parities.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine goat milk physicochemical parameters during the feed scarcity season. An evaluation was made for 398 milk samples from 80 multiparous goats belonging to three different production systems: (S1) mechanized milking grazing pasture and harvested residue (alfalfa) and grain supplemented; (S2) system grazing native pasture; and (S3) system grazing native pasture and grain supplemented. The general averages were: fat (FT) 4.0 ± 0.20%, protein (PR) 3.3 ± 0.05%, lactose (LC) 4.9 ± 0.09%, nonfat solids (NFS) 8.9 ± 0.13%, total solids (TS) 14.5 ± 0.20%, temperature (TM) 24.6 ± 1.06°C, and acidity (pH) 6.7 ± 0.049. Most of the physicochemical components of milk were affected (p < 0.0001) by the production system × month interaction and production system × group × month interaction. The FT content was higher (p < 0.05) in S2 (4.56 ± 0.18) than in S1 (3.64 ± 0.20) and S3 (3.50 ± 0.20). LC differed (p < 0.05) in S2 (5.07 ± 0.08) than in S1 (4.77 ± 0.09) and S3 (4.70 ± 0.09). No differences were observed for the rest of the variables (p < 0.05) among the production systems. The study unveiled a higher content of FT, LC, NFS, PR, and TS for S2 than for S1 and S3. This higher content may be explained because S2 only grazed on herbs and shrubs, in contrast to S1 and S3 which were additionally supplemented with grain concentrates.
