A Review of Some of the History of Factorial Invariance and Differential Item Functioning

The concept of factorial invariance has evolved since it originated in the 1930s as a criterion for the usefulness of the multiple factor model; it has become a form of analysis supporting the validity of inferences about group differences on underlying latent variables. The analysis of differential item functioning (DIF) arose in the literature of item response theory (IRT), where its original purpose was the detection and removal of test items that are differentially difficult for, or biased against, one subpopulation or another. The two traditions merge at the level of the underlying latent variable model, but their separate origins and different purposes have led them to differ in details of terminology and procedure. This review traces some aspects of the histories of the two traditions, ultimately drawing some conclusions about how analysts may draw on elements of both, and how the nature of the research question determines the procedures used. Whether statistical tests are grouped by parameter (as in studies of factorial invariance) or across parameters by variable (as in DIF analysis) depends on the context and is independent of the model, as are subtle aspects of the order of the tests. In any case in which DIF or partial invariance is a possibility, the invariant parameters, or anchor items in DIF analysis, are best selected in an interplay between the statistics and judgment about what is being measured.

A Latent Change Score Approach to Understanding Chronic Bodily Pain Outcomes Following Knee Arthroplasty: A Secondary Analysis of Longitudinal Data

BACKGROUND

The extent to which chronic bodily pain changes following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is unknown. We determined the extent of chronic bodily pain changes at 1 year following TKA.

METHODS

Data from our randomized trial of pain coping skills, which revealed no effect of the studied interventions, were used. The presence and severity of chronic pain in 16 body regions, excluding the surgically treated knee, were determined prior to and 1 year following surgery. The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) pain scale was used to quantify the extent of surgical knee pain. Latent change score (LCS) models were used to determine the extent to which true chronic bodily pain scores change after TKA.

RESULTS

The mean age of the sample of 367 participants was 63.4 ± 8.0 years, and 247 (67%) were female. LCS analyses showed significant 20% to 54% reductions in pain in the surgically treated lower limb (not including the surgically treated knee), pain in the non-surgically treated lower limb, and whole body pain. In bivariate LCS analyses, greater improvement in the WOMAC pain score, indicating surgical benefit of TKA, led to greater improvement in all 4 bodily pain areas beyond the surgically treated knee, even after controlling for the latent change in pain catastrophizing.

CONCLUSIONS

Clinically important chronic bodily pain reductions occurred following TKA and may be causally linked to the surgical procedure. Reduction in chronic bodily pain in sites other than the surgically treated knee is an additional benefit of TKA.

Defining despair: Assessing the multidimensionality of despair and its association with suicidality and substance use in early to middle adulthood

Despite considerable scientific interest in documenting growing despair among U.S. adults, far less attention has been paid to defining despair and identifying appropriate measures. Emerging perspectives from social science and psychiatry outline a comprehensive, multidimensional view of despair, inclusive of individuals' cognitive, emotional, biological and somatic, and behavioral circumstances. The current study assesses the structure and plausibility of this framework based on longitudinal data spanning early to middle adulthood. We identified 40 measures of different dimensions of despair in Wave IV (2008-2009) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adult to Adolescent Health (n = 9149). We used structural equation modeling to evaluate hypothesized relationships among observed and latent variables; we then regressed Wave V (2016-2018) suicidality, heavy drinking, marijuana use, prescription drug misuse, and illicit drug use on latent despair. Our analyses find that models for separate dimensions of despair and overall despair demonstrated excellent fit. Overall despair was a significant predictor of Wave V outcomes, especially suicidality, accounting for 20% of its variation, as compared to 1%-7% of the variation in substance use. Suicidality was consistently associated with all domains of despair; behavioral despair explained the most variation in substance use. Given these results we contend that, lacking direct measures, latent despair can be modeled using available survey items; however, some items are likely better indicators of latent dimensions of despair than others. Moreover, the association between despair and key health behaviors varies considerably, challenging its status as a mechanism simultaneously underlying increased substance use and suicide mortality in the United States. Critically, further validation of measures in other surveys can improve the operationalization of despair and its associated conceptual and theoretical frameworks, thus advancing our understanding of this concept.

Executive Functioning Constructs in Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive, Post-Traumatic Stress, and Related Disorders

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

We synthesize theories proposing complex relations between cognitive functioning and anxiety-related concepts. We evaluate vulnerability theories suggesting that deficits in various cognitive functioning domains predict future anxiety-associated concepts. We examine scar theories asserting the opposite direction of effects (i.e., anxiety predicting cognitive dysfunction). Furthermore, we examine more novel frameworks on this topic.

RECENT FINDINGS

Reliable evidence exists for the scar and vulnerability theories. This includes mounting data on diverse anxiety symptoms predicting cognitive dysfunction (and conversely) unfolding at between- and within-person levels (dynamic mutualism theory). It also includes data on the stronger effects or central influence of anxiety (versus non-anxiety) symptoms on executive functioning (EF; i.e., higher-order cognitive control governing myriad thinking and action repertoires) versus non-EF domains and vice versa (network theory). In addition, it reviews emerging evidence that enhanced cognitive control can correlate with higher anxiety among children (overgeneralized control theory). The generally inverse relations between anxiety symptoms and cognitive dysfunction are bidirectional and complex within and between persons. Plausible mediators and moderators merit more attention, including immune, metabolism, and neural markers and the social determinants of health.
