Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effect of the preparation of solid dispersions using supercritical CO2 (scCO2) on the physicochemical properties and the performance of supramolecular gels based on polymer-cyclodextrin (CD) interactions (named poly(pseudo)rotaxanes, PPR) envisaging a transdermal administration. Solid dispersions containing Soluplus®, the antihypertensive drug carvedilol (CAR), and CD (αCD or HPβCD) were prepared and characterized by HPLC, XRPD, FTIR, and DSC. PPRs prepared from solid dispersions (SCF gels) and the corresponding physical mixtures (PM gels) were analyzed regarding rheology, morphology, in vitro drug diffusion, and ex vivo drug skin permeation. The application of scCO2 led to the loss of the crystalline lattice of CAR while preserving its chemical identity. On the contrary, αCD crystals were still present in the SCF solid dispersions. SCF gels were more uniform than their corresponding PM, and the supercritical treatment resulted in changes in the rheological behavior, reducing the viscosity. CAR in vitro diffusion was significantly higher (p < 0.05) for the αCD-based SCF gel than its corresponding PM gel. Drug skin permeation showed a significant increase in drug flux from CD-based SCF gels (containing αCD or HPβCD) compared to corresponding PM gels. Additionally, the pretreatment of the skin with αCD exhibited increased CAR permeation, suggesting an interaction between αCD and the skin membrane. Results evidenced that SCF processing decisively modified the properties of the supramolecular gels, particularly those prepared with αCD.

Abstract
Trichoderma spp. are widely used beneficial microbes in agricultural production; however, the improper carrier choice for Trichoderma agent preparation can alter the effectiveness of Trichoderma fungicides. In this study, the co-culture of four Trichoderma strains produced a large amount of free amino acids, with a content of 392.8414 ug/mL, and significantly improved the production level of γ-aminobutyric acid. A greenhouse experiment further showed that the co-culture of Trichoderma synergistically improved the female flower development and bacterial angular leaf spot resistance. The effects of ten kinds of carriers were compared in terms of water absorption and heat generation, as well as their effects on the seedling emergence rate and the plant growth promotion of maize, cucumber, and pakchoi cabbage. Each carrier was screened to mix with four strains of co-culture metabolites to prepare highly soluble and quality powders. The results showed that there were different effects of the carriers themselves and Trichoderma strain co-culture metabolite powder prepared with the carriers on seedling emergence rate and seedling growth. Β-cyclodextrin performed best in high solubility and low heat generation upon absorbing water and in easy drying in processing operations. Trichoderma strains co-culture metabolite powder with β-cyclodextrin as a carrier provided the most obvious promotion effects on seedling emergence rate and seedling growth. Therefore, β-cyclodextrin was determined to be an ideal carrier to prepare a highly water-soluble Trichoderma agent. Taken together, the study successfully developed a new type of highly soluble powder containing Trichoderma co-culture metabolites that is expected to benefit farming drip irrigation and spraying systems for the promotion of crop growth and disease control.

Abstract
The real problem in pharmaceutical preparation is drugs' poor aqueous solubility, low permeability through biological membranes, and short biological t1/2. Conventional drug delivery systems are not able to overcome these problems. However, cyclodextrins (CDs) and their derivatives can solve these challenges. This article aims to summarize and review the history, properties, and different applications of cyclodextrins, especially the ability of inclusion complex formation. It also refers to the effects of cyclodextrin on drug solubility, bioavailability, and stability. Moreover, it focuses on preparing and applying gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as novel drug delivery systems. It also studies the uses and effects of cyclodextrins in this field as novel drug carriers and targeting devices. The system formulated from AuNPs linked with CD molecules combines the advantages of both CD and AuNPs. Cyclodextrins benefit in increasing aqueous drug solubility, loading capacity, stability, and size control of gold NPs. Also, AuNPs are applied as diagnostic and therapeutic agents because of their unique chemical properties. Plus, AuNPs possess several advantages such as ease of detection, targeted and selective drug delivery, greater surface area, high loading efficiency, and higher stability than microparticles. In the present article, we tried to present the potential pharmaceutical applications of CD-derived AuNPs in biomedical applications including antibacterial, anticancer, gene-drug delivery, and various targeted drug delivery applications. Also, the article highlighted the role of CDs in the preparation and improvement of catalytic enzymes, the formation of self-assembling molecular print boards, the fabrication of supramolecular functionalized electrodes, and biosensors formation.

Abstract
This study aims to develop an antibacterial agent that can be used for food packaging. Essential oils of Houttuynia cordata Thunb., a well-known medical herb, were extracted by two methods: multi-solvent consecutive extraction method and single ethanol extraction with a pre-heating method. Consequently, the extract obtained by the single ethanol extraction with a pre-heating method was more satisfactory from the operational and economic aspects. Afterwards, one of the encapsulation techniques: co-precipitation method using β-cyclodextrins as wall materials, was applied to form capsules for the protection of the obtained extract. After the capsule synthesis, the results of scanning electron micrographs and X-ray diffraction showed β-cyclodextrin crystallites in the form of thinner plates became oriented upon co-precipitation. Combining the results of Fourier transform-infrared spectra and an antibacterial assay using Bacillus subtilis as an object microorganism, the extract was confirmed to be successfully encapsulated within hollow cavities of β-cyclodextrins. A significant inhibitory activity on the growth and breeding of Bacillus subtilis was observed after the addition of fabricated capsules, which suggests the capsules containing the Houttuynia cordata Thunb. extract can be used as eco-friendly antibacterial agents for food packaging.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are naturally available water-soluble cyclic oligosaccharides widely used as carriers in the pharmaceutical industry for their ability to modulate several properties of drugs through the formation of drug-CD complexes. The addition of an auxiliary substance when forming multicomponent complexes is an adequate strategy to enhance complexation efficiency and to facilitate the therapeutic applicability of different drugs. This review discusses multicomponent complexation using amino acids; organic acids and bases; and water-soluble polymers as auxiliary excipients. Special attention is given to improved properties by including information on the solubility, dissolution, permeation, stability and bioavailability of several relevant drugs. In addition, the use of multicomponent CD complexes to enhance therapeutic drug effects is summarized.

Abstract
Piroxicam (PRX) is a commonly prescribed nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Its efficacy, however, is partially limited by its low water solubility. In recent years, different studies have tackled this problem and have suggested delivering PRX through solid dispersions. All these strategies, however, involve the use of potentially harmful solvents for the loading procedure. Since piroxicam is soluble in supercritical CO2 (scCO2), the present study aims, for the first time, to adsorb PRX onto mesoporous silica using scCO2, which is known to be a safer and greener technique compared to the organic solvent-based ones. For comparison, PRX is also loaded by adsorption from solution and incipient wetness impregnation using ethanol as solvent. Two different commercial mesoporous silicas are used (SBA-15 and Grace Syloid® XDP), which differ in porosity order and surface silanol population. Physico-chemical analyses show that the most promising results are obtained through scCO2, which yields the amorphization of PRX, whereas some crystallization occurs in the case of adsorption from solution and IWI. The highest loading of PRX by scCO2 is obtained in SBA-15 (15 wt.%), where molecule distribution appears homogeneous, with very limited pore blocking.

Abstract
In this work, rutin (RUT)–β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) inclusion complexes are prepared by Supercritical AntiSolvent (SAS) precipitation. Well-defined composite microparticles are obtained at guest:host ratios equal to 1:2 and 1:1 mol:mol. The dimensions of composite particles range between 1.45 ± 0.88 µm and 7.94 ± 2.12 µm. The formation of RUT–β-CD inclusion complexes has been proved by different analyses, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The dissolution tests reveal a significant improvement in the release rate of RUT from inclusion complexes. Indeed, compared to the unprocessed RUT, the dissolution rate is about 3.9 and 2.4 times faster in the case of the complexes RUT–β-CD 1:2 and 1:1 mol:mol, respectively. From a pharmaceutical/nutraceutical point of view, CD-based inclusion complexes allow the reduction of the polymer amount in the SAS composite formulations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Natural plant essential oils have antimicrobial properties; however, essential oils are difficult to maintain in a system because of their volatile nature. First, we prepared microcapsules from β-cyclodextrin and oregano essential oil and characterized their properties. Second, the effect of microcapsules on the preservation of freshly cut purple yam was studied using an edible coating technique. Purple yams immersed in distilled water were used as control, and their characteristics were compared with yams coated with citric acid, citric acid + sodium alginate, and citric acid + sodium alginate + β-cyclodextrin-oregano essential oil microcapsules (CA-SA-MC) and stored at 4 °C for 5 days. RESULTS Microcapsules of oregano essential oil and β-cyclodextrin solution were successfully prepared via the inclusion method, with an optimal encapsulation efficiency of 55.14%. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis showed strong bonds between β-cyclodextrin and oregano essential oil. All edible coatings, particularly CA-SA-MC, significantly (P ≤ 0.05) maintained firmness, total soluble solids, ascorbic acid content, and anthocyanin content compared with control treatment. This treatment also prevented browning and extended the shelf life of purple yam. CONCLUSION Oregano essential oil can be successfully encapsulated into cyclodextrin microcapsules. It has a great impact on the shelf life extension of purple yam and could be successfully applied to other fresh produce. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The carvacrol (CAR) was microencapsulated by β-cyclodextrin (βCD). To extend the shelf-life of white mushrooms against Trichoderma sp., the microencapsulated CAR (βCD-CARM)/sodium alginate (SA) films were prepared and characterized. The antifungal, physical, and mechanical properties of the films were investigated in this study. The results showed that the βCD-CARM with a core-to-wall ratio of 1:10 had better encapsulation efficiency and antifungal activity against Trichoderma sp., which was isolated from postharvest white mushrooms stored at 4 °C. The optimum concentration of βCD-CARM against Trichoderma sp. in vitro was 15 g/L. The water resistance, mechanical properties, light barrier property and heat aging of the film were enhanced after adding βCD-CARM. The films with 30 g/L βCD-CARM could efficiently against Trichoderma sp. The performance of βCD-CARM/SA films was confirmed to control the release of CAR for enhanced antifungal activity. Besides, the βCD-CARM/SA films increased the activities of active free-radical scavenging enzymes to alleviate oxidative damage and delay senescence of the postharvest white mushrooms.

Abstract
Over the years, various methods have been developed to enhance the solubility of insoluble drugs; however, most of these methods are time-consuming and labor intensive or involve the use of toxic materials. A method that can safely and effectively enhance the solubility of insoluble drugs is lacking. This study adopted baicalin as an insoluble drug model, and used hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin for the delivery of baicalin via the inclusion complexation by supercritical fluid encapsulation. Different parameters for the complex preparation as well as the physicochemical properties of the complex have been investigated. Our results showed that when compared to the conventional solution mixing approach, supercritical fluid encapsulation enables a more precise control of the properties of the complex, and gives higher loading and encapsulation efficiency. It is anticipated that our reported method can be useful in enhancing the preparation efficiency of inclusion complexes, and can expand the application potential of insoluble herbal ingredients in treatment development and pharmaceutical formulation.

Abstract
This study explores the preparation and investigation of dissolution properties of piroxicam cocrystals. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to determine the capability of resorcinol (RES), methylparaben (MPB), and vanillin (VAN) to form cocrystals with piroxicam (PRX). Generation of cocrystals was attempted by liquid assisted grinding and slurry methods. Cocrystals were characterized by thermal methods, powder X-ray diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Apparent solubility, intrinsic dissolution rate (IDR), and powder dissolution profile of cocrystals were compared with anhydrous piroxicam, piroxicam monohydrate (PRXMH), and previously reported piroxicam-succinic acid cocrystal. Contact angles and particle sizes of the studied solids were also measured. Based on the DSC screening results, we prepared and characterized PRX-RES and PRX-MPB cocrystals. Interestingly, the cocrystals not only failed to improve apparent solubility and IDR of PRX but also showed lower values than PRX that were attributed to induction of phase transformation of PRX to PRXMH. In contrary, cocrystals performed better than PRX in powder dissolution studies. The higher dissolution rates of cocrystals were explained by improved wettability and reduced sizes. This study has highlighted the complexity of solid state properties of cocrystals and has provided new evidence for the in-solution stability issues of cocrystals.

Abstract
In this study, furbiprofen/hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) inclusion complexes were prepared to improve the drug dissolution and facilitate its application in hydrophilic gels. Inclusion complexes were prepared using a supercritical fluid processing and a conventional optimized co-lypholization method was employed as a reference. The entrapment efficacy and drug loading of both methods were investigated. Evaluation of drug dissolution enhancement was conducted in deionized water as well as buffer solutions of different pH. Carbopol 940 gels of both flurbiprofen and flurbiprofen/HPβCD inclusion complexes, with or without penetration enhancers, were prepared and percutaneous permeation studies were performed using rat abdominal skin samples. Formation of flurbiprofen/HPβCD inclusion complexes was confirmed by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results obtained showed that SCF processing produced a higher EE (81.91 ± 1.54%) and DL (6.96 ± 0.17%) compared with OCL with values of 69.11 ± 2.23% and 4.00 ± 1.01%, respectively. A marked instantaneous release of flurbiprofen/HPβCD inclusion complexes prepared by SCF processing (103.04 ± 2.66% cumulative release within 5 min, a 10-fold increase in comparison with flurbiprofen alone) was observed. In addition, this improvement in dissolution was shown to be pH-independent (the percentage cumulative release at pH 1.2, 4.5, 6.8 and 7.4 at 5 min was 95.19 ± 1.71, 101.75 ± 1.44, 105.37 ± 4.58 and 96.84 ± 0.56, respectively). Percutaneous permeability of flurbiprofen-in-HPβCD-in-gels could be significantly accelerated by turpentine oil and was related to the water content in the system. An in vivo pharmacokinetic study showed a 2-fold increase in Cmax and a shortened Tmax as well as a comparable relative bioavailability when compared with the commercial flurbiprofen Cataplasms (Zepolas®). With their superior dissolution, these flurbiprofen/HPβCD inclusion complexes prepared by SCF processing could provide improved applications for flurbiprofen.

Abstract
The formation of supramolecular host-guest complexes is a very useful and widely employed tool in chemistry. However, supramolecular chemistry in non-conventional solvents such as supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2 ), one of the most promising sustainable solvents, is still in its infancy. In this work, we explored a successful route to the development of green processes in supercritical CO2 by combining a theoretical approach with experiments. We were able to synthesize and characterize an inclusion complex between a polar aromatic molecule (benzoic acid) and peracetylated-β-cyclodextrin, which is soluble in the supercritical medium. This finding opens the way to wide, environmental friendly, applications of scCO2 in many areas of chemistry, including supramolecular synthesis, reactivity and catalysis, micro and nano-particle formation, molecular recognition, as well as enhanced extraction processes with increased selectivity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Poor solubility and dissolution of drugs are the major challenges in drug formulation and delivery. In order to improve the solubility and dissolution profile of drugs, various methods have been investigated so far. The cyclodextrin (CD) complexation and phospholipid (PL) complexation are among the exhaustively investigated methods employed for more precise improvement of the solubility and dissolution of poorly water-soluble drugs. AREAS COVERED The article discusses the CD and PL complexation techniques of solubility and dissolution enhancement. Various studies reporting the CD and PL complexation as the potential approaches to improve the dissolution, absorption and the bioavailability of the drugs have been discussed. The article critically reviews the physicochemical properties of CDs and PLs, eligibility of drugs for both the complexation, thermodynamics of complexation, methods of preparation, characterization, advantages, limitation and the meta-analysis of some studies for both the techniques. EXPERT OPINION The CD and PL complexation techniques are very useful in improving solubility and dissolution (and hence the bioavailability) of biopharmaceutical classification system Class II and Class IV drugs. The selection of a particular kind of complexation can be made on the basis of eligibility criteria (of drugs) for the individual techniques, cost, stability and effectiveness of the complexes.

Abstract
Complexes of methyl-β-cyclodextrin and ketoprofen, a crystalline anti-inflammatory drug with poor water solubility, have been prepared for the first time in the presence of supercritical CO2at 40°C and 20 MPa. The supercritical treatment allows these pharmaceutical formulations to be prepared without the use of any auxiliary agents or organic solvents. The treated samples were characterized through differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffractometry, and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to exclude the presence of crystalline drug and check the formation of the complexes. The increase of the drug dissolution rate was investigated performing in vitro release tests in aqueous solutions. The results showed that the supercritical treatment can be an efficient method to obtain inclusion complexes with enhanced release kinetics. The operating methods of the release tests, that is, the “tablet method” or the “dispersed amount method,” affected both the dissolution rate and its dependence on the drug amount in the samples. On the contrary, the variation of the pH of the dissolution medium did not show any effect on the release rate of the supercritical complexes.

Abstract
The solubility of drug molecules can often be improved through preparation and delivery of cyclodextrin (CD) inclusion complexes. These drug-oligosaccharide complexes can be prepared in solution and converted to the solid state via methods such as lyophilization and spray-drying, or they can be prepared directly from solids by a variety of methods. The development of drug-CD complexes as solids allows for potential advantages in dosage form design, such as the preparation of layered formulations, and it also can yield improvements in chemical and physical stability. 2D solid-state NMR (SSNMR) methods provide a direct way to probe drug-CD interactions in solid complexes through dipolar interactions between nuclei within the drug and CD molecules. In this study, 2D heteronuclear and homonuclear correlation SSNMR experiments involving (1)H, (13)C, (19)F, and (31)P nuclei are used to demonstrate the inclusion of drug within the CD cavity in a variety of powder samples. To illustrate the general applicability of the SSNMR approach presented, examples are shown for the drugs diflunisal, adefovir dipivoxil, voriconazole, dexamethasone, and prednisolone in complexes with α-CD, β-CD, and sulfobutylether-substituted β-CD. The quantitative analysis of included and free drug fractions in a solid drug-CD complex using SSNMR is also demonstrated. On the basis of these results, general approaches to the characterization of these materials using SSNMR are proposed.

Abstract
Structural properties of peracetylated β-cyclodextrin in supercritical carbon dioxide were investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The study indicated a strong reduction of the cavity accessibility to guest molecules, compared to native β-cyclodextrin in water. Indeed, the cavity is self-closed during the largest part of the simulation, which agrees well with suggestions made on the basis on high-pressure NMR experiments. Self-closure happens because one glucose unit undergoes a main conformational change (from chair to skew) that brings one of the acetyl groups in the wide rim of the cyclodextrin to the cavity interior. This arrangement turns out to be quite favorable, persisting for several nanoseconds. In addition to the wide rim self-closure, a narrow rim self-closure may also occur, though it is less likely and exhibits short duration (<1 ns). Therefore, the number of solvent molecules reaching the cavity interior is much smaller than that found in the case of native β-cyclodextrin in water after correction to account for different molar densities. These findings support the weak tendency of the macromolecule to form host-guest complexes in this nonconventional medium, as reported by some experiments. Finally, Lewis acid/base interactions between the acetyl carbonyl groups and the solvent CO(2) molecules were analyzed through ab initio calculations that revealed the existence of a quite favorable four-member ring structure not yet reported. The ensemble of these results can contribute to establish general thermodynamic principles controlling the formation of inclusion complexes in supercritical CO(2), where the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity balance is not applicable.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to investigate the inclusion complexes between mosapride citrate and SBE7β-CD in comparison with the natural β-CD to enhance its bioavailability by improving the solubility and dissolution rate. The complexation efficiency value of SBE7β-CD was higher than that for β-CD. Solid binary systems of mosapride citrate with CDs were prepared by physical mixing, kneading and freeze-drying techniques at molar ratio of 1:1(drug:CD). Physicochemical characterization of the prepared systems was studied using X-ray diffractometry, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Amorphous drug was detectable to large extent in inclusion complexes prepared using the freeze-drying technique. From the dissolution study of different inclusion complexes in simulated saliva solution (pH 6.8), we could concluded that irrespective of the preparation technique, the systems prepared using SBE7β-CD showed better performance than the corresponding ones prepared using β-CD. In addition, the freeze-drying technique showed superior dissolution enhancement than other methods especially when combined with the SBE7β-CD.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are used in oral pharmaceutical formulations, by means of inclusion complexes formation, with the following advantages for the drugs: (1) solubility, dissolution rate, stability, and bioavailability enhancement; (2) to modify the drug release site and/or time profile; and (3) to reduce or prevent gastrointestinal side effects and unpleasant smell or taste, to prevent drug-drug or drug-additive interactions, or even to convert oil and liquid drugs into microcrystalline or amorphous powders. A more recent trend focuses on the use of CDs as nanocarriers, a strategy that aims to design versatile delivery systems that can encapsulate drugs with better physicochemical properties for oral delivery. Thus, the aim of this work was to review the applications of the CDs and their hydrophilic derivatives on the solubility enhancement of poorly water-soluble drugs in order to increase their dissolution rate and get immediate release, as well as their ability to control (to prolong or to delay) the release of drugs from solid dosage forms, either as complexes with the hydrophilic (e.g., as osmotic pumps) and/or hydrophobic CDs. New controlled delivery systems based on nanotechnology carriers (nanoparticles and conjugates) have also been reviewed.

Abstract
With the advent of the development of novel pharmaceutical products and therapies, there is a need for effective delivery of these products to patients. Dependent on whether they are small-molecular weight drugs or biologics, many new compounds may suffer from poor solubility, poor stability or require frequent administration and therefore require optimized delivery. For example, the utilization of polymorphism and the enhanced solubility in the amorphous state is being exploited to improve the dissolution of small-molecular weight poorly soluble drugs. This can be achieved by the formation of solid dispersions in water-soluble matrices. In addition, encapsulation in biodegradable polymeric materials is one potential route to reduce the frequency of administration through the formation of sustained-release formulations. This is desirable for biologics, for example, which generally require administration once or twice daily. Supercritical fluid processing can achieve both of these outcomes, and this review focuses on the use of supercritical CO2 to encapsulate active pharmaceutical ingredients to enhance solubility or achieve sustained release. Using supercritical CO2-mediated processes provides a clean and potentially solvent-free route to prepare novel drug products and is therefore an attractive alternative to conventional manufacturing technologies.

Abstract
Supercritical carbon dioxide technology is an environmentally benign technique that allows precise control of particle morphology, while minimizing organic solvent use for a wide variety of biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. Supercritical carbon dioxide processes have benefits over the conventional particle formation methods in terms of improved control, flexibility and operational ease. This article gives an insight into a variety of supercritical fluid techniques relevant to drug formulation, recent advances and novel applications in the field of controlled delivery. These new methods have been designed to alleviate the scaling-up of the traditional methods for nanoparticle formulation either in the form of polymeric scaffolds, impregnation or nanoencapsules using a simple one-step process to produce micron-size particles.
