Properties of Portulaca oleracea seed oil via supercritical fluid extraction: Experimental and optimization

Solubility of lumiracoxib in supercritical carbon dioxide

This study aims to use a static-based solubility method for measuring the solubility of lumiracoxib at a temperature of 308-338 K and pressure of 120-400 bar for the first time. The obtained solubility data for lumiracoxib is between 4.74 × 10-5 and 3.46 × 10-4 (mole fraction) for the studied ranges of pressure and temperature. The solubility values reveal that the lumiracoxib experiences a crossover pressure of about 160 bar. Moreover, the measured solubility data of these two drugs are correlated with density-based semi-empirical correlations namely Bartle et al., Mendez-Santiago-Teja, Kumar and Johnstone, Chrastil and modified Chrastil models with an average absolute relative deviation of 10.7%, 9.5%, 9.8%, 7.8%, and 8.7% respectively for lumiracoxib. According to these findings, it is obvious that all of the examined models are rather accurate and there is no superiority between these models for both examined drugs although the Chrastil model is slightly better in the overall view.

Determination of Regorafenib monohydrate (colorectal anticancer drug) solubility in supercritical CO2: Experimental and thermodynamic modeling

In this study, the solubilities of Regorafenib monohydrate (REG), a widely used as a colorectal anticancer drug, in supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO2) were measured under various pressures and temperature conditions, for the first time. The minimum value of REG in mole fraction was determined to be 3.06×10-7, while the maximum value was found to be 6.44×10-6 at 338 K and 27 MPa. The experimental data for REG were correlated through the utilization of two types of models: (1) a set of 25 existing empirical and semi-empirical models that incorporated 3-8 parameters according to functional dependencies, (2) a model that relied on solid-liquid equilibrium (SLE) and the newly improved association models. All of the evaluated models were capable of generating suitable fits to the solubility data of REG, however, the average absolute relative deviation (AARD) of Gordillo et al. model (AARD=13.2%) and Reddy et al. model (AARD=13.5%) indicated their superiority based on AARD%. Furthermore, solvation and sublimation enthalpies of REG drug were estimated for the first time.

Extraction Process Optimization of Curcumin from Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb. with Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Using Ethanol as a Cosolvent

Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb., known as temulawak, Javanese ginger, or Javanese turmeric, is a plant species belonging to the ginger family. This plant originated in Indonesia, more specifically on Java Island, and is usually used as medicine. It contains a high amount of a phenolic compound, namely, curcumin. A supercritical carbon dioxide extraction technique was employed to extract curcumin from C. xanthorrhiza. The objective of this work was to investigate the effects of temperature, pressure, and CO2 flow rate on the extraction yield and curcumin recovery from C. xanthorrhiza, which was extracted using supercritical carbon dioxide and ethanol as a cosolvent. The Box-Behnken design (BBD) experimental design and response surface methodology were used to optimize the extraction yield and curcumin recovery. The extraction conditions at a temperature of 40 °C, a pressure of 25 MPa, and a CO2 flow rate of 5.34 mL/min produced the optimum extraction yield of 10.4% and curcumin recovery of 3.2%. From Fourier transform infrared analysis, although the physical-chemical structure in the residue of the starting material was almost similar, the quantity of all functional groups in the residue decreased from the starting material. From scanning electron microscopy analysis, it was confirmed that the cell was broken due to the high-pressure effect, so that the extraction process runs easily.

Extraction and Emulsification of Carotenoids from Carrot Pomaces Using Oleic Acid

This study aimed to use oleic acid-based ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) to recover carotenoids from carrot pomace and emulsify the enriched-carotenoid oleic acid using spontaneous and ultrasonic-assisted emulsification. The extraction performance of oleic acid was compared with traditional organic solvents, including hexane, acetone, and ethyl acetate. The one-factor experiments were employed to examine the impact of UAE conditions, including liquid-to-solid ratios, temperature, ultrasonic power, and time, on the extraction yield of carotenoids and to find the conditional ranges for the optimization process. The response surface methodology was employed to optimize the UAE process. The second-order extraction kinetic model was used to find the mechanism of oleic acid-based UAE. After that, the enriched-carotenoid oleic acid obtained at the optimal conditions of UAE was used to fabricate nanoemulsions using spontaneous emulsification (SE), ultrasonic-assisted emulsification (UE), and SE-UE. The effect of SE and UE conditions on the turbidity of nanoemulsion was determined. Then, the physiochemical attributes of the nanoemulsion from SE, UE, and spontaneous ultrasonic-assisted emulsification (SE-UE) were determined using the dynamic light scattering method. The extraction yield of carotenoids from carrot pomace by using sonication was the highest. The adjusted optimal conditions were 39 mL/g of LSR, 50 °C, 12.5 min, and 350 W of ultrasonic power. Under optimal conditions, the carotenoid content attained was approximately 163.43 ± 1.83 μg/g, with the anticipated value (166 μg/g). The particle sizes of nanoemulsion fabricated at the proper conditions of SE, UE, and SE-UE were 31.2 ± 0.83, 33.8 ± 0.52, and 109.7 ± 8.24 nm, respectively. The results showed that SE and UE are suitable methods for fabricating nanoemulsions. The research provided a green approach for extracting and emulsifying carotenoids from carrot pomace.

Ternary Metal (Cu-Ni-Zn) Oxide Nanocomposite via an Environmentally Friendly Route

In this work, we report the engineering of sub-30 nm nanocomposites of CuO/ZnO/NiO by using Dodonaea viscosa leaf extract. Zinc sulfate, nickel chloride, and copper sulfate were used as salt precursors, and isopropyl alcohol and water were used as solvents. The growth of nanocomposites was investigated by varying the concentrations of precursors and surfactants at pH 12. The as-prepared composites were characterized by XRD analysis and found to have CuO (monoclinic), ZnO (hexagonal primitive), and NiO (cubic) phases with an average size of 29 nm. FTIR analysis was performed to investigate the mode of fundamental bonding vibrations of the as-prepared nanocomposites. The vibrations of the prepared CuO/ZnO/NiO nanocomposite were detected at 760 and 628 cm^-1, respectively. The optical bandgap energy of the CuO/NiO/ZnO nanocomposite was 3.08 eV. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy was performed to calculate the band gap by the Tauc approach. Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the synthesized CuO/NiO/ZnO nanocomposite were investigated. It was found that the antimicrobial activity of the synthesized nanocomposite increases with an increase in the concentration. The antioxidant activity of the synthesized nanocomposite was examined by using both ABTS and DPPH assays. The obtained results show an IC₅₀ value of 0.110 for the synthesized nanocomposite compared to DPPH and ABTS (0.512), which is smaller than that of ascorbic acid (IC₅₀ = 1.047). Such a low IC₅₀ value ensures that the antioxidant potential of the nanocomposite is higher than that of ascorbic acid, which in turn shows their excellent antioxidant activity against both DPPH and ABTS.

Characterization of phyto-components with antimicrobial traits in supercritical carbon dioxide and soxhlet Prosopis juliflora leaves extract using GC-MS

This study aimed to screen the bioactive compounds from Prosopis juliflora leaf supercritical fluid extract and to assess its antimicrobial properties. Supercritical carbon dioxide and Soxhlet methods were used for extraction. The extract was subjected to Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) and Fourier Transform Infrared for the characterization of the phyto-components. When compared to soxhlet extraction, more components (35) were eluted by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), according to GC-MS screening. Rhizoctonia bataticola, Alternaria alternata, and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides were all successfully inhibited by P. juliflora leaf SFE extract, which demonstrated strong antifungal properties with mycelium percent inhibition of 94.07%, 93.15%, and 92.43%, respectively, compared to extract from Soxhlet, which registered 55.31%, 75.63% and 45.13% mycelium inhibition respectively. Also, SFE P. juliflora extracts registered higher zone of inhibition 13.90 mm, 14.47 mm and 14.53 mm against all three test food-borne bacterial pathogens viz Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica and Staphylococcus aureus respectively. Results obtained from GC-MS screening revealed that SFE is more efficient than soxhlet extraction in recovering the phyto-components. P. juliflora may provide antimicrobial agents, a novel natural inhibitory metabolite.

A Novel Strategy for the Separation of Functional Oils from Chamomile Seeds

The main aim of this study was to evaluate the oils from chamomile seeds as a new source of bioactive compounds suitable for human consumption. A green extraction technique with supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO2) at pressures up to 450 bar and temperatures up to 60 °C was employed for the production of a high amount of biologically active oil. Additionally, exhausted waste material was re-extracted using sc-CO2 with the addition of ethanol. By optimization in operating pressure, temperature, production cost, fraction of milled seeds, and co-solvent addition, the amount of separated chamomile oil increased from 2.4 to 18.6% and the content of unsaturated fatty acids up to 88.7%. Oils contained α-bisabolol oxide A and B in amounts up to 1.4%. Linoleic acid was detected in an amount up to 711.1 mg/g and α-linolenic acid up to 27.5 mg/g. The total phenolic content in separated oil reached 80.4 mg GAE/g while the total flavonoid content reached 11.6 mg QE/g. The obtained chamomile oils showed antioxidant activity with an IC50 of up to 3.9 mg/mL. Among the 23 tested microorganisms, the antimicrobial activity of oils was the most pronounced against Gram-positive bacteria. The cytotoxic activity of oils was tested on normal and cancer-derived cell lines. Results indicated a significant potential for oil from chamomile seeds, produced in an eco-friendly manner, as a functional food.

Separation of hydrocarbons from activated carbon as a porous substance in a glycol regeneration process using supercritical carbon dioxide

Activated carbons are used in industrial applications; their cost is a major barrier to their more widespread application. Regeneration of activated carbons is indispensable to minimize operational costs and product wastage. Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO₂) as green technology was used to regenerate activated carbons. In this work, response surface methodology was employed to optimize the supercritical regeneration process and to evaluate the effect of the operational parameters including pressure (100-300 bar), temperature (313-333 K), flow rate (2-6 g/min), and dynamic time (30-150 min) on the regeneration yield. The maximum regeneration yield (93.71%) was achieved at 285 bar, 333 K, 4 g/min, and 147 min. Mathematical modeling was done using two one-parameter kinetics models, which agree well with the experimental data. The fitting parameter of the model was obtained by using a differential evolution algorithm. The chemical composition of the substances extracted from the activated carbon was identified by gas chromatography. The results showed that the regeneration of activated carbon by SC-CO₂ can be an alternative method to conventional methods.

Essential Oil and Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extract of Grapefruit Peels Formulated for Candida albicans Infections: Evaluation by an in Vitro Model to Study Fungal-Host Interactions

Resistance to currently available antifungal agents raises the need to develop alternative remedies. Candida albicans is the most common opportunistic pathogenic fungus of humans, colonizing in the genital and intestinal mucosa, skin, and oral-nasal cavity and reducing quality of life. Herein, essential oil from grapefruit (Citrus paradise) peels was obtained by hydrodistillation, and the remaining plant material was sequentially subjected to supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO₂) extraction to determine the conditions for maximizing phenolic compounds. A statistical design was used to evaluate the effect of temperature (30, 50, 70 °C), pressure (80, 150, 220 bar), and ethanol as a cosolvent (0%, 10%, and 20% v/v). Essential oil and SC-CO₂ extracts were mixed at various ratios to develop an effective antifungal formulation. Subsequently, fungal infection was modeled by coculturing C. albicans with human skin keratinocytes (HaCaT) to mimic dermal mycoses, endothelial cells (HUVEC) to evaluate vascular fate, and cervical adenocarcinoma (HeLa) cells to represent additional genital mycoses. Treatment with essential oil and extract (25:75%) formulation for 8 h exhibited slight cytotoxicity toward HeLa cells, no toxicity toward HaCaT and HUVECs, whereas inhibition of C. albicans. Considering the clinical significance, such in vitro models are essential to screen potential compounds for the treatment of opportunistic fungal infections.

Valorization of Food Processing Waste to Produce Valuable Polyphenolics

Traditional incineration and landfill of food processing waste (FPW) have polluted the environment and underutilized valuable bioactive compounds, including polyphenols in food waste. As one of the most widely occurring compounds in the FPW, polyphenols possess high utilization value in many fields such as human health, energy, and environmental protection. Extracting polyphenols directly from FPW can maximize the value of polyphenols and avoid waste of resources. However, traditional polyphenol extraction methods mostly use the Soxhlet extraction, infiltration, and impregnation method, consuming a large amount of organic solvent and suffering from long extraction time and low extraction efficiency. Emerging green extraction methods such as supercritical fluid extraction, ultrasonic-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, and other methods can shorten the extraction time and improve the solvent extraction efficacy, resulting in the green and safe recovery of polyphenols from FPW. In this paper, the traditional treatment methods of FPW waste and the application of polyphenols in FPW are briefly reviewed, and the traditional extraction methods and emerging green extraction methods of polyphenols in FPW are compared to obtain insight into the start-of-the-art extraction approaches.

Hydro-Distilled and Supercritical Fluid Extraction of Eucalyptus camaldulensis Essential Oil: Characterization of Bioactives Along With Antioxidant, Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Activities

Present research work evaluates variation in volatile chemicals profile and biological activities of essential oil (EO) obtained from the leaves of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh.) using hydro-distillation (HD) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE). The yield (1.32%) of volatile oil by HD was higher than the yield (.52%) of the SFE method (P < .05). The results of physical factors like density, color, refractive index, and solubility of the EOs produced by both the methods showed insignificant variations. Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS) compositional analysis showed that eucalyptol (31.10% and 30.43%) and α-pinene (11.02% and 10.35%) were the main constituents detected in SFE and HD extracted Eucalyptus camaldulensis EO, respectively. Antioxidant activity-related parameters, such as reducing ability and DPPH free radical scavenging capability exhibited by EO obtained via SFE were noted to be better than hydro-distilled EO. Supercritical fluid extracted and hydro-distilled essential oils demonstrated a considerable but variable antimicrobial potential against selected bacterial and fungal strains. Interestingly, oil extracted by SFE showed relatively higher hemolytic activity and biofilm inhibition potential. The variation in biological activities of tested EOs can be linked to the difference in the volatile bioactives composition due to different isolation techniques. In conclusion, the EO obtained from Eucalyptus leaves by the SFE method can be explored as a potential antioxidant and antimicrobial agent in the functional food and nutra-pharmaceutical sector.

Characterization of Volatile Flavor Compounds in Supercritical Fluid Separated and Identified in Gurum (Citrulluslanatus Var. colocynthoide) Seed Oil Using HSME and GC-MS

In this study, the volatile compound profiles of gurum seed oil were determined using two methods: supercritical CO₂ extraction (SFE) and the screw press process (SPP). For volatile compounds extraction and identification, headspace solid-phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) and GC-MS were used, respectively. A total number of 56 volatile compounds were revealed and identified in oil extracted by SFE, while only 40 compounds were detected in extracted oil by SPP. Acids, aldehydes, esters, ketones, furans, and other components were present in the highest ratio in oil extracted by SFE. In contrast, alcohols and alkenes were found in the highest proportion in oil extracted by SPP. In this study, it was observed that SFE showed an increase in the amounts of volatile compounds and favorably impacted the aroma of gurum seed oil. The results reveal that different extraction methods significantly impact the volatile components of gurum seed oil, and this study can help evaluate the quality of the oil extracted from gurum seeds.

Process Optimization for Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction of Origanum vulgare L. Essential Oil Based on the Yield, Carvacrol, and Thymol Contents

Background

Origanum vulgare L. essential oil (OEO) is widely known for its good biological activity, but different extraction methods with significant implications on the yield of OEO and the content of the thymol and carvacrol. As an efficient method for extracting essential oils (EO), the supercritical carbon dioxide extraction (SC-CO2) can improve the yield of EOs while protecting their main active components from loss.

Objective

In this study, the process optimization of SC-CO2 of OEO was carried out. The effects of extraction pressure, temperature, time, and modifier concentration on the composite score of OEO extraction process were investigated.

Method

Response surface analysis was performed using a Box-Behnken design with three levels and four independent variables. Steam distillation (SD) and lipophilic solvents (n-hexane) extraction (LSE) were compared with SC-CO2 for OEO yields. OEOs extracted by the three methods were qualitatively and semi-quantitatively analyzed by gas chromatography quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-flame ionization detector.

Results

The results showed that extraction pressure was the most significant factor affecting the OEO yield, thymol, and carvacrol content. In the optimal conditions (pressure: 217 bar, temperature: 54°C, time: 2 h, modifier concentration: 14%), the yield of OEO reached up to 1.136%, and the contents of thymol and carvacrol reached 53.172  and 41.785 mg/g, respectively.

Conclusions

SC-CO2 was the best extraction method compared to the other two methods. Under the optimal conditions, yield and the content of main components can be effectively improved. It can provide a theoretical basis for the industrial extraction of OEO.

Highlights

Taking the comprehensive score as the index, the interaction between the four independent variables in the supercritical fluid extraction process was evaluated by the response surface method. The effects of extraction parameters on the yield of EOs and the contents of thymol and carvacrol were comprehensively investigated.

Antimicrobial Properties, Cytotoxic Effects, and Fatty Acids Composition of Vegetable Oils from Purslane, Linseed, Luffa, and Pumpkin Seeds

In the present study, the antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities, as well as the fatty acids composition in vegetable seed oils from linseed, purslane, luffa, and pumpkin were evaluated. For this purpose, two linseed oils and one luffa oil were commercially obtained, while purslane and pumpkin oils were obtained from own cultivated seeds. The results showed a variable fatty acids composition among the tested oils, with α-linolenic, linoleic, oleic, palmitic, and stearic acid being the most abundant compounds. In regards to particular oils, linseed oils were a rich source of α-linolenic acid, luffa and pumpkin oil were abundant in linoleic acid, while purslane oil presented a balanced composition with an almost similar amount of both fatty acids. Luffa oil was the most effective against two of the tested cancer cell lines, namely HeLa (cervical carcinoma) and NCI-H460 (non-small cell lung cancer), while it also showed moderate toxicity against non-tumor cells (PLP2 cell line). Regarding the antibacterial activity, linseed oil 3 and pumpkin oil showed the highest activity against most of the tested bacteria (especially against Enterobacter cloacae and Escherichia coli) with MIC and MBC values similar to the used positive controls (E211 and E224). All the tested oils showed significant antifungal activities, especially luffa and pumpkin oil, and for most of the tested fungi they were more effective than the positive controls, as for example in the case of Aspergillus versicolor, A. niger, and Penicillium verrucosum var. cyclopium. In conclusion, the results of our study showed promising antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties for the studied seed oils which could be partly attributed to their fatty acids composition, especially the long-chain ones with 12–18 carbons.

Extraction process and method validation for bioactive compounds from Citrus reticulata cv. Chachiensis: Application of response surface methodology and HPLC–DAD

Citrus reticulata cv. Chachiensis, a traditional Chinese herb, has extensive medicinal and edible effects. 3′,4′,5,6,7,8-Hexamethoxyflavone (HM) and 5,6,7,8,4′-pentamethoxyflavone (PM) are main bioactive compounds in Chachiensis, which have been reported to possess various biological properties. In this study, supercritical CO2 extraction (SCE) and high-speed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC) were utilized to prepare HM and PM from Chachiensis. The contents of target compounds were determined by a high-performance liquid chromatography method with diode-array detection (HPLC-DAD), which was validated using the following parameters: linearity, sensitivity, repeatability, stability, precision and accuracy. The SCE conditions were optimized using response surface methodology with central composite design. Obtained optimum conditions were temperature of 37.9 °C, pressure of 26.3 MPa, and modifier volume of 81.0 mL. Under above conditions, the recoveries of target compounds were 92.52 ± 0.83 and 96.36 ± 0.43%, respectively. The most appropriate solvent system for HSCCC was selected as n-hexane/ethyl acetate/methanol/water (1:0.8:1:1.2, v/v). The HSCCC fractions were detected by HPLC-DAD, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR and 13C NMR). The results indicated that this method was successfully applied to obtain HM and PM with high purities and high recoveries from Chachiensis.

Metabolomic Profiling and Neuroprotective Effects of Purslane Seeds Extract Against Acrylamide Toxicity in Rat's Brain

AIM

Acrylamide (ACR) is an environmental pollutant with well-demonstrated neurotoxic and neurodegenerative effects in both humans and experimental animals. The present study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective effect of Portulaca oleracea seeds extract (PSE) against ACR-induced neurotoxicity in rats and its possible underlying mechanisms. PSE was subjected to phytochemical investigation using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) coupled with quantitative time of flight mass spectrometry (qTOF-MS). Multivariate, clustering and correlation data analyses were performed to assess the overall effects of PSE on ACR-challenged rats. Rats were divided into six groups including negative control, ACR-intoxicated group (10 mg/kg/day), PSE treated groups (200 and 400 mg/kg/day), and ACR + PSE treated groups (200 and 400 mg/kg/day, respectively). All treatments were given intragastrically for 60 days. PSE markedly ameliorated brain damage as evidenced by the decreased lactate dehydrogenase (LDL), increased acetylcholinesterase (AchE) activities, as well as the increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) that were altered by the toxic dose of ACR. In addition, PSE markedly attenuated ACR-induced histopathological alterations in the cerebrum, cerebellum, hippocampus and sciatic nerve and downregulated the ACR-inclined GFAP expression. PSE restored the oxidative status in the brain as indicated by glutathione (GSH), lipid peroxidation and increased total antioxidant capacity (TAC). PSE upregulated the mRNA expression of protein kinase B (AKT), which resulted in an upsurge in its downstream cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB)/BDNF mRNA expression in the brain tissue of ACR-intoxicated rats. All exerted PSE beneficial effects were dose-dependent, with the ACR-challenged group received PSE 400 mg/kg dose showed a close clustering to the negative control in both unsupervised principal component analysis (PCA) and supervised orthogonal partial least square discriminant analysis (OPLS-Da) alongside with the hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA). The current investigation confirmed the neuroprotective capacity of PSE against ACR-induced brain injury, and our findings indicate that AKT/CREB pathways and BDNF synthesis may play an important role in the PSE-mediated protective effects against ACR-triggered neurotoxicity.

Effect of CO2 Flow Rate on the Extraction of Astaxanthin and Fatty Acids from Haematococcus pluvialis Using Supercritical Fluid Technology

Haematococcus pluvialis is the largest producer of natural astaxanthin in the world. Astaxanthin is a bioactive compound used in food, feed, nutraceutics, and cosmetics. In this study, astaxanthin extraction from H. pluvialis by supercritical fluid extraction was evaluated. The effects of temperature (40 and 50 °C), pressure (40 and 50 MPa), and CO₂ flow rate (2 and 4 L/min) were investigated. The results showed that the highest astaxanthin recovery was obtained at 50 °C/50 MPa and the CO₂ flow rates evaluated had no significant effect. It was possible to achieve astaxanthin recoveries of 95% after 175 min for a CO₂ flow rate of 2 L/min, and 95 min for CO₂ flow rate of 4 L/min. The ω-6/ω-3 ratios obtained were similar in all conditions, reaching 0.87, demonstrating that the extracts from H. pluvialis by SFE are rich in unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) which increases their positive effects when used as a functional ingredient in food.

Preparation of phthalocyanine green nano pigment using supercritical CO2 gas antisolvent (GAS): experimental and modeling

Phthalocyanine green nano pigment was prepared using supercritical gas antisolvent (GAS) process based on the SC-CO₂ method. Thermodynamic models were developed to study the volume expansion and operating conditions of the GAS process. Peng-Robinson EoS were applied for binary (CO₂ and DMSO) and ternary (CO₂, DMSO, and pigment) systems. A Box-Behnken experimental design was used to optimize the process. Influences of temperature (308, 318 and 328 K), pressure (10, 15 and 20 MPa) and solute concentration (10, 40 and 70 mg/mL) were studied on the particles size and their morphology. The fine particles produced were characterized by SEM, DLS, XRD, FTIR and DSC. Experimental results showed a great reduction in size of pigment particles in comparison to the original particles. The mean particle sizes of nanoparticles were obtained to 27.1 nm after GAS based on SC-CO₂ method.

The effect of pressure on the characteristics of supercritical carbon dioxide extracts from Calamintha nepeta subsp. nepeta

Chemists and industrialists are continuously attempting to develop greener and more environmentally benign chemical processes to extract essential oils and bioactive metabolites of high purity, finding various applications in cosmetics, detergents, nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. An increase preferenced for natural products over synthetic ones has made supercritical fluid technology a primary alternative for the generation of high-value bioactive ingredients. This effective technique requires only moderate temperatures, eliminates clean-up steps and avoids the use of harmful organic solvents. In this context, our study was focused on the chemical analysis of Calamintha nepeta subsp. nepeta aromatic extracts obtained with supercritical carbon dioxide. The effect of different operating conditions on the capacity of the lipophilic solvent to extract the targeted volatile components was also studied. The process was carried out at a fairly low constant temperature of 40°C, and with varying the pressure from 90 to 300 bar. The chemical composition of the extracts was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. The results showed that the composition pattern, the concentrations of individual components and the quality of the extractable analytes were affected by pressure increase. The extraction yields varied from 0.73 to 1.21 wt% at 90 and 300 bar, respectively.

Supercritical carbon dioxide extract of Cinnamomum cassia bark: toxicity and repellency against two stored-product beetle species

The extract from Cinnamomum cassia Presl bark was obtained with supercritical CO₂ fluid extraction (SFE). Chemical components of the SFE extract were characterized by GC-MS spectrometry. The repellency and contact toxicity of the SFE extract were evaluated against the adults of Tribolium castaneum and Lasioderma serricorne along with those of its two main compounds. The results of GC-MS analysis indicated that 33 volatile constituents were identified from the extract. The main components included trans-cinnamaldehyde (32.1%), 3,3-dimethylhexane (10.6%) and 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol (7.9%). Testing results showed that the SFE extract had potent contact toxicity against T. castaneum and L. serricorne with LD₅₀ values of 3.96 and 23.89 μg/adult, respectively. LD₅₀ values of trans-cinnamaldehyde against T. castaneum and L. serricorne were 5.78 and 3.24 μg/adult, respectively. Additionally, percentage repellency values of the SFE extract and trans-cinnamaldehyde against T. castaneum and L. serricorne were rather high (PR = 100% and PR > 90%, respectively) at 78.63 and 15.73 nL/cm² at 2 h post-exposure. 2,4-Di-tert-butylphenol showed some repellency against both beetle species. Considering its insecticidal and repellent effects, the SFE extract from C. cassia bark might be used in integrated pest management programs for T. castaneum and L. serricorne.
