Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-gripping mesh, made of monofilament polypropylene and covered by a layer of polylactic acid micro-hooks, is applied in ventral hernia repair, whereas cytological change and collagen expression around the mesh are rarely reported. The objective of this research was to compare inflammatory response and collagen proliferation between self-gripping and polypropylene mesh in rat model of incisional hernia. METHODS Forty-five rats were randomly divided into unrepaired (UR) group, polypropylene (PP) mesh group, and self-gripping (SG) mesh group and euthanized at 1, 2 and 4 weeks postoperatively. The levels of inflammation, neovascularization, and collagen expression were measured by immunohistochemistry, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, and Western blot. RESULTS One rat died and others developed typical incisional hernia in UR group, and hematoma, seroma, or wound infection were not observed in PP and SG groups. There was no significant difference in mesh shrinkage and inflammatory infiltration between PP and SG groups. With regard to neovascularization, 2 groups were comparable at 1 and 2 weeks, while the neovascularization score of PP group was statistically higher than that of SG group at 4 weeks. One week after surgery, the amounts of Collagen I (Col I) mRNA in PP group were significantly higher than SG group, while the amounts of Collagen III (Col III) mRNA were comparable between 2 groups. Two weeks following operation, the expressions of Col I mRNA and Col III mRNA in PP group were statistically lower than those in SG group. Four weeks postoperatively, the levels of Col I mRNA and Col III mRNA in PP group were significantly higher than those in SG group. CONCLUSION Self-gripping mesh induced comparable inflammatory response and collagen proliferation compared with polypropylene mesh in a rat model. REGISTRATION NUMBER ZZU-LAC2023080121.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (LIHR), fixation means for meshes (FMMs) are commonly used to reduce hernia recurrence risk. Their use may result in post-operative pain (PP) and may even increase surgical time (ST). Recently, self-gripping meshes (SGMs) have been developed, which leave aside fixation devices; they could potentially reduce PP and even decrease ST. Our primary outcome was to compare ST, PP and recurrence rates in LIHR using SGM versus FMM. PATIENTS AND METHODS A comparative retrospective study with prospective case registry was conducted. All patients who underwent LIHR with transabdominal pre-peritoneal approach from January to December 2022 in a high-volume centre were analysed. Patients were divided into two groups according to the type of mesh used in surgery (SGM vs. FMM). Demographic variables, hernia type and size, mesh type and size, ST, PP, recurrence and other morbidities were compared between the groups. RESULTS A total of 411 LIHRs were performed during the period, of which 283 were included in the study. Of these, 234 patients were repaired with FMM and 49 with SGM. ST had a statistically significant reduction in the SGM group (P = 0.0004) with a mean time of 58.9 min (±13.6), compared to 68.1 min (±18.9) for the FMM group. A trend towards lower PP in the SGM group was noted (P = 0.08). No recurrences were found in the SGM group with a median follow-up of 18 months (interquartile range: 3). CONCLUSIONS SGMs have proven to be a safe, efficient and fast for LIHR in our series. They are a feasible alternative for LIHR, reducing ST and potentially reducing PP. Prospective randomised trials are needed to confirm this trend, along with a longer follow-up period to determine potential advantages in terms of recurrences.

Abstract
The optimal surgical approach of incarcerated and strangulated inguinal hernia is controversial. Retrospective studies showed that surgical approaches through lower abdominal median incision or laparoscopic are superior to the oblique inguinal incision, respectively. Whether transabdominal laparoscopic approach is superior to the lower abdominal median incision approach needs prospective research.Prospective comparative study of patients with incarcerated and strangulated groin hernia admitted to Jinshan hospital for emergency surgery from January 2018 to June 2022. They were divided into two groups according to different surgical approach. The open preperitoneal repair group (OPR) was operated through the lower abdominal median incision. Laparoscopic preperitoneal repair group (TAPP) was completed under transabdominal laparoscope. The perioperative complications and long-term results of the two groups were compared and analyzed. Eighty-two patients met the inclusion criteria, 40 in OPR group and 42 in TAPP group. Baseline data of the two groups were comparable. Thirteen cases (15.9%) of the two groups underwent intestinal resection and anastomosis. Seventy cases (90.2%) underwent the 1st stage mesh repair, including 5 cases of preperitoneal hernioplasty after intestinal resection. The average operation time of TAPP group was 13 min longer (60.7 ± 13.7 min vs 47.8 ± 19.8 min P < 0.001), and the visual analogue scale pain score at 24 h after operation was lower (3.5 ± 1.2 vs 4.4 ± 1.7 P = 0.019) than that of OPR group. There was 1 case of bladder injury (2.5%) in OPR group and 1 case of inferior abdominal artery injury (2.4%) in TAPP group. There was no difference in the rate of the 1st stage hernioplasty between the two groups. In OPR group, 2 cases (5%) extended the incision for more than 2 cm, while in TAPP group, 1 case (2.4%) converted to laparotomy. The time of hospital stay (3.2 ± 1.8 d vs 4.3 ± 2.7 d, P = 0.036) and return to normal activities (7.9 ± 2.7 d vs 11.0 ± 4.4 d, P < 0.001) were shorter in TAPP group. The rate of total postoperative complications including chronic pain, surgical-site infection, seroma, hernia recurrence and so on was 11.9% in TAPP group, which was not significantly different from 25% in OPR group (P = 0.212). There were no cases of mesh related infection and death within 30 days in both groups.TAPP is safe and feasible for the operation of acute incarcerated inguinal hernia. TAPP had better comfort and faster recovery over open preperitoneal repair for the appropriate patients with incarcerated/strangulated inguinal hernia, which can reduce acute pain, shorten hospital stay and return to normal activities earlier.

Abstract
Currently, groin hernia repair is mostly performed with application of mesh prostheses fixed with or without suture. However, views on safety and efficacy of different surgical approaches are still partly discordant. In this multicentre retrospective study, three sutureless procedures, i.e., mesh fixation with glue, application of self-gripping mesh, and Trabucco's technique, were compared in 1034 patients with primary unilateral non-complicated inguinal hernia subjected to open anterior surgery. Patient-related features, comorbidities, and drugs potentially affecting the intervention outcomes were also examined. The incidence of postoperative complications, acute and chronic pain, and time until discharge were assessed. A multivariate logistic regression was used to compare the odds ratio of the surgical techniques adjusting for other risk factors. The application of standard/heavy mesh, performed in the Trabucco's technique, was found to significantly increase the odds ratio of hematomas (p = 0.014) and, most notably, of acute postoperative pain (p < 0.001). Among the clinical parameters, antithrombotic therapy and large hernia size were independent risk factors for hematomas and longer hospital stay, whilst small hernias were an independent predictor of pain. Overall, our findings suggest that the Trabucco's technique should not be preferred in patients with a large hernia and on antithrombotic therapy.

Abstract
Objective The objective of this systematic review is to analyse the randomised control trials (RCTs) comparing the self-gripping mesh (SGM) with sutured mesh fixation (SMF) in open inguinal hernia repair. Materials and methods RCTs comparing SGM with SMF in open inguinal hernia repair were selected from medical electronic databases and analysis was performed using the principles of meta-analysis with RevMan version 5 statistical software. Results Seventeen RCTs involving 3863 patients were used for the final analysis. In the random effect model analysis, the operative time [mean difference - 7.72, 95 %, CI (-9.08, -6.35), Z = 11.07, P = 0.00001] was shorter for open inguinal hernia repair with SGM. However, there was noteworthy heterogeneity (Tau2 = 4.24; Chi2 = 1795.04, df = 12; (P = 0.00001; I2 = 99 %) among the included studies. The incidence of chronic groin pain [odds ratio 1.17, 95 %, CI (0.88, 1.54), Z = 1.09, P = 0.28], postoperative complications [odds ratio 0.92, 95 %, CI (0.73, 1.16), Z = 0.71, P = 0.48] and recurrence [odds ratio 1.31, 95 %, CI (0.80, 2.12), Z = 1.08, P = 0.28] were statistically similar between both groups, without heterogeneity. Conclusion SGM failed to demonstrate a clinical advantage over SMF in terms of perioperative outcomes although the duration of surgery was shorter in SGM.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing postoperative outcomes in inguinal hernia repair with TIPP versus Lichtenstein technique. METHODS Cochrane Central, Scopus, and PubMed were systematically searched for studies comparing TIPP and Lichtenstein´s technique for inguinal hernia repair. Outcomes assessed were operative time, bleeding, surgical site events, hospital stay, the Visual Analogue Pain Score, chronic pain, paresthesia rates, and recurrence. Statistical analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4.1. Heterogeneity was assessed with I2 statistics and random-risk effect was used if I2 > 25%. RESULTS 790 studies were screened and 44 were thoroughly reviewed. A total of nine studies, comprising 8428 patients were included, of whom 4185 (49.7%) received TIPP and 4243 (50.3%) received Lichtenstein. We found that TIPP presented less chronic pain (OR 0.43; 95% CI 0.20-0.93 P = 0.03; I2 = 84%) and paresthesia rates (OR 0.27; 95% CI 0.07-0.99; P = 0.05; I2 = 63%) than Lichtenstein group. In addition, TIPP was associated with a lower VAS pain score at 14 postoperative day (MD - 0.93; 95% CI - 1.48 to - 0.39; P = 0.0007; I2 = 99%). The data showed a lower operative time with the TIPP technique (MD - 7.18; 95% CI - 12.50, - 1.87; P = 0.008; I2 = 94%). We found no statistical difference between groups regarding the other outcomes analyzed. CONCLUSION TIPP may be a valuable technique for inguinal hernias. It was associated with lower chronic pain, and paresthesia when compared to Lichtenstein technique. Further long-term randomized studies are necessary to confirm our findings. Abstract
Background: Prosthetic repair is always employed after large abdominal wall tumor resection, while chronic pain is one of the mesh-related complications after traumatic fixation. The objective of this research was to evaluate the outcomes of retromuscular repair with self-gripping mesh after abdominal wall tumor resection.Methods: The study was a monocentric retrospective analysis following STrengthening the Reporting of OBservational studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) statements of all patients with abdominal wall tumor >5 cm in diameter undergoing tumor excision and retromuscular repair with self-gripping mesh. Demographic, operative, early postoperative, and follow-up data were noted. Visual Analog Scale, ranging from 0 (no pain) to 10 (very severe pain), was used to estimate the wound pain.Results: 24 patients were included in this study, and the defect following tumor resection was 26.9±10.0 cm2. There was no tumor recurrence or incisional hernia in median follow-up of 20 months, and the mean VAS score was 0.4. Three had foreign body feeling and no one suffered chronic pain.Conclusions: Immediate repair with a self-gripping retromuscular mesh can be considered as an effective way to treat an abdominal wall defect after resecting an abdominal wall tumor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mesh-based repair is the standard of surgical care for symptomatic inguinal hernias. Many systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRMAs) addressed various aspects of these procedures. This umbrella review aimed to report the evidence from all previous SRMAs for open and laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. METHODS SRMAs were identified from MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane, Embase, DARE, PROSPERO, CINAHL, JBISRIS, EPPI-Centre, Wiley Online Library and ScienceDirect database according to PRISMA guidelines. Data including mesh-fixation techniques and surgical approach were extracted from selected SRMAs. The corrected covered area was calculated to address study overlap across reviews, and an excess significance test was used to assess potential bias. The outcomes of interest were hernia recurrence, chronic groin pain, operating time, postoperative pain, duration of hospital stay, return to daily life activities, and postoperative complication. RESULTS Thirty SRMAs were included between 2010 and 2019: 16 focused on open repair, and 14 focused on laparoscopic repair, with a high degree of overlap (open repairs, 41 per cent; laparoscopic repairs, 30-57 per cent). Sufficient evidence was available on hernia recurrence, chronic groin pain, and operative time. Effects of glue on hernia recurrence were inconclusive in open and laparoscopy approaches, P = 0.816 and 0.946 respectively. Glue was significantly associated with lower persistent groin pain, in open repair (versus suture) and in laparoscopic repair (versus tack). SRMAs suggested that self-gripping mesh was associated with shorter operating time in open surgery, although with only a few minutes of improvement (0.36-7.85 min, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION In this umbrella review, chronic groin pain and operating time were the only outcomes for which there was sufficient evidence supporting the effectiveness respectively of glue and self-gripping mesh.

Abstract
Self-gripping mesh is widely used in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair and some researches report its advantages compared with conventional mesh. The aim of this study was to assess outcomes of self-gripping mesh and conventional mesh in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. A systematic literature review was undertaken to identify studies comparing the results of self-gripping mesh and conventional mesh in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. Outcomes, including recurrence, chronic pain, operation time, hematoma, seroma and infection, were measured. Four randomized controlled trials and 1 prospective comparative study were analyzed. The incidence of chronic pain in self-gripping group was significantly lower than that in conventional group (OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.20, 0.93, P = 0.03), and there was no significant difference in hernia recurrence (OR 0.31, 95% CI 0.03, 3.06, P = 0.32), operation time (MD 0.06, 95%CI - 2.32, 2.44, P = 0.96), hematoma (OR 1.01, 95% CI 0.33, 3.07, P = 0.99) and seroma (OR 0.90, 95% CI 0.49, 1.66, P = 0.73). Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair using self-gripping mesh is associated with a decreased incidence of chronic pain compared with conventional mesh, without increased postoperative complications.

Abstract
Purpose Atraumatic mesh fixation for abdominal hernia repair has been developed to avoid the disadvantages of classical fixation with sutures, which is considered a cause of chronic pain and discomfort. This study was designed to analyze, in the short and medium term, the biological and mechanical behavior of two self-fixing meshes compared to that of a polypropylene (PP) mesh fixed with a cyanoacrylate (CA) tissue adhesive. Methods Partial abdominal wall defects (6 × 4 cm) were created in New Zealand rabbits (n = 36) and repaired using a self-adhesive hydrogel mesh (Adhesix™), a self-gripping mesh (ProGrip™) or a PP mesh fixed with CA (Surgipro™ CA). After 14 and 90 days, the host tissue incorporation, macrophage response and biomechanical strength were examined. Results At 14 and 90 days, the ProGrip and Surgipro CA meshes showed good host tissue incorporation; however, the Adhesix implants presented poor integration, seroma formation and a higher degree of shrinkage. The Adhesix hydrogel was completely reabsorbed at 14 days, whereas ProGrip microhooks were observed at all study times. The macrophage response was higher in the ProGrip and Surgipro CA groups at 14 and 90 days, respectively, and decreased over time. At 90 days, the ProGrip implants showed the highest tensile strength values and the Adhesix implants showed the highest failure stretch. Conclusion Meshes with mechanical microgrip self-fixation (ProGrip) show better biological and mechanical behavior than those with adhesive hydrogel (Adhesix) in a preclinical model of abdominal hernia repair in rabbits.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We investigated the effectiveness of a self-gripping mesh, which has microgrips attached to fibrous tissue, in laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) obturator hernia (OH) repair to minimize the risk of postoperative pain and obturator nerve injury. PRESENTATION OF CASE The patient was an 80-year-old woman who was transferred to our emergency department with abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant and low back pain that began half a day prior to presentation. Computed tomography (CT) detected right OH. Based on the results of the laboratory examination and dynamic CT, intestinal viability was maintained. Ultrasonography-assisted manual reduction of the incarcerated intestine was performed, followed by admission to our department to check for delayed perforation of the intestine. Laparoscopic TAPP OH repair was performed on day seven as an elective surgery. A self-gripping mesh was placed over the OH defect and the femoral ring without tacking. The patient was discharged on postoperative day four, without any complications. DISCUSSION Tacking of the mesh at the lateral and dorsal sides of the obturator canal is dangerous due to the presence of the obturator nerve and vessels. Self-gripping mesh use in laparoscopic TAPP OH repair is a rational decision in terms of avoiding tacking or suturing around the obturator canal while maintaining stable fixation of the mesh to prevent recurrence. CONCLUSION Laparoscopic TAPP OH repair with self-gripping mesh is a rational treatment option that reduces the risk of obturator nerve injury while maintaining the secure fixation of a mesh to prevent recurrence.

Abstract
Biomaterials and their applications are perhaps among the most dynamic areas of research within the field of biomedicine. Any advance in this topic translates to an improved quality of life for recipient patients. One application of a biomaterial is the repair of an abdominal wall defect whether congenital or acquired. In the great majority of cases requiring surgery, the defect takes the form of a hernia. Over the past few years, biomaterials designed with this purpose in mind have been gradually evolving in parallel with new developments in the different surgical techniques. In consequence, the classic polymer prosthetic materials have been the starting point for structural modifications or new prototypes that have always strived to accommodate patients’ needs. This evolving process has pursued both improvements in the wound repair process depending on the implant interface in the host and in the material’s mechanical properties at the repair site. This last factor is important considering that this site—the abdominal wall—is a dynamic structure subjected to considerable mechanical demands. This review aims to provide a narrative overview of the different biomaterials that have been gradually introduced over the years, along with their modifications as new surgical techniques have unfolded.

Abstract
Several randomized trials comparing self-gripping mesh with polypropylene (PL) mesh in Lichtenstein hernioplasty revealed that the self-gripping mesh significantly reduced the operation time. In these studies, some enrolled only male patients, and in others, the proportion of women was extremely low. The aim of this research was to compare outcomes after self-gripping mesh repair with PL mesh secured with sutures in female Lichtenstein hernioplasty. Female patients with primary unilateral inguinal hernia were assigned randomly to undergo Lichtenstein hernioplasty with a self-gripping ProGrip (PG) mesh or a sutured PL mesh, followed-up at one week, one month, three months, one year, and two years. Demographics, hernia characteristics, and operative outcomes data were analyzed. Pain was assessed with a visual analog scale (0–10), and quality of life (QOL) was estimated by a 36-item short-form general survey (0–26). Forty eight patients in the PG group and 51 participants in the PL group completed the follow-up. The operation time of the PG (54.1 ± 12 minutes) group was significantly shorter than that of the PL (60.9 ± 11.3 minutes) group ( P = 0.045). At the one-month follow-up, the incidence of foreign body feeling in the PG group was significantly higher than that in the PL group ( P = 0.031), whereas no significant difference was observed in visual analog scale ≥3 and QOL. In a follow-up of three months, one year, and two years, there was no significant difference in foreign body feeling, chronic pain, QOL, and recurrence between two groups. The surgical outcomes of self-gripping mesh are comparable to those of the ordinary PL mesh with a reduced operation time in female Lichtenstein hernioplasty. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Morbidity following open inguinal hernia repair is mainly related to chronic pain. ProGrip™ is a self-gripping mesh which aims to reduce rates of chronic pain. The aim of this study is to perform an update meta-analysis to consolidate the non-superiority hypothesis in terms of postoperative pain and recurrence and perform a trial sequential analysis. METHODS Systematic review of randomised controlled trials performed according to PRISMA guidelines. Pooled odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using the Mantel-Haenszel (M-H) method. The primary outcome measure was postoperative pain and secondary outcomes were recurrence, operative time, wound complications, length of stay, re-operation rate, and cost. Trial sequential analysis was performed. RESULTS There were 14 studies included in the quantitative analysis with 3180 patients randomised to self-gripping mesh (1585) or standard mesh (1595). At all follow-up time points, there was no significant difference in the rates of chronic pain between the self-gripping and standard mesh (risk ratio, RR 1.10, 95% confidence interval, CI 0.83-1.46). There were no significant differences in recurrence rates (RR 1.13, CI 0.84-2.04). The mean operating time was significantly shorted in the ProGrip™ mesh group (MD - 7.32 min, CI - 10.21 to - 4.44). Trial sequential analysis suggests findings are conclusive. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis has confirmed no benefit of a ProGrip™ mesh when compared to a standard sutured mesh for open inguinal hernia repair in terms of chronic pain or recurrence. No further trials are required to address this clinical question.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Improved recurrence rates after groin hernia surgery have led to chronic pain becoming the most troublesome postoperative complication. Self-gripping mesh was developed to decrease the risk for development of chronic pain. The aim of this nationwide cohort study was to compare recurrence rate and chronic pain 1 year after an open, anterior mesh repair of inguinal hernias with either a self-gripping mesh or other lightweight mesh. METHOD All operations registered as open anterior mesh repair (Lichtenstein) in the Swedish Hernia Registry between September 2012 and October 2016 were selected. At 1 year after repair, patients were sent a pain questionnaire assessing chronic pain. We compared the prevalence of chronic pain and reoperation for recurrence using lightweight, sutured mesh or self-gripping mesh. RESULTS We analyzed the 1,803 repairs using self-gripping mesh and 16,567 repairs using lightweight mesh. We found no difference in the prevalence of chronic pain 1 year after the hernia repair between self-gripping mesh and sutured lightweight mesh (OR 0.92, CI 95% 0.80-1.06, P = .257). There was no increase in reoperation for recurrence when using self-gripping mesh (HR 0.71, CI 95% 0.45-1.14, P = .156). Mean operation time was considerably less when using self-gripping mesh (43 vs 70 minutes; P > .001). CONCLUSION The use of self-gripping mesh does not decrease the incidence of chronic pain and reoperation for recurrence compared with lightweight, sutured mesh for open anterior mesh repair of inguinal hernias. Furthermore, the use of self-gripping mesh is associated with a clinically important, lesser operation time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Laparoscopic groin hernia repair is an increasingly common procedure with benefits of reduced post-operative pain and infection. Post-operative chronic pain remains an ongoing concern in about 10% of patients. Parietex ProGrip™, a polyester self-gripping mesh, has a theoretical benefit of avoiding tacks for mesh-fixation. This case series reflects our long-term experience of this technique. METHODS We conducted a retrospective case series from November 2011 to December 2017. Patients were identified through an operative Medicare Benefits Schedule item number search. Clinical documentation was reviewed with length of stay, mesh infection, chronic pain, recurrence and re-operation as primary data points. RESULTS A total of 514 patients underwent 780 laparoscopic inguinal hernia repairs with self-gripping polyester mesh during this period. There were 53 female (10.3%) and 461 male patients (89.7%). Unilateral hernia repair was performed in 248 patients (48.2%) and bilateral repair in 266 patients (51.8%). Almost all repairs (779, 99.8%) were primary hernias. There were no mesh infections. Four recurrences were noted (0.51%) and three of these subsequently underwent open redo-hernia repairs (0.38%). Post-operative follow-up was up to 4.4 years. CONCLUSIONS Our series of laparoscopic groin hernia repair with self-gripping mesh demonstrate this is a safe and reliable mesh and effective technique with low recurrence rates.

Factors predicting chronic pain after open inguinal hernia repair: a regression analysis of randomized trial comparing three different meshes with three fixation methods (FinnMesh Study). Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic pain after inguinal hernioplasty is the foremost side-effect up to 10-30% of patients. Mesh fixation may influence on the incidence of chronic pain after open anterior mesh repairs. METHODS Some 625 patients who underwent open anterior mesh repairs were randomized to receive one of the three meshes and fixations: cyanoacrylate glue with low-weight polypropylene mesh (n = 216), non-absorbable sutures with partially absorbable mesh (n = 207) or self-gripping polyesther mesh (n = 202). Factors related to chronic pain (visual analogue scores; VAS ≥ 30, range 0-100) at 1 year postoperatively were analyzed using logistic regression method. A second analysis using telephone interview and patient records was performed 2 years after the index surgery. RESULTS At index operation, all patient characteristics were similar in the three study groups. After 1 year, chronic inguinal pain was found in 52 patients and after 2 years in only 16 patients with no difference between the study groups. During 2 years' follow-up, three (0.48%) patients with recurrences and five (0.8%) patients with chronic pain were re-operated. Multivariate regression analysis indicated that only new recurrent hernias and high pain scores at day 7 were predictive factors for longstanding groin pain (p = 0.001). Type of mesh or fixation, gender, pre-operative VAS, age, body mass index or duration of operation did not predict chronic pain. CONCLUSION Only the presence of recurrent hernia and early severe pain after index operation seemed to predict longstanding inguinal pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair has become a valid option for repair of an inguinal hernia. Due to there are several types of mesh fixation for laparoscopic repair of inguinal hernia. The study aims to assess and compare the efficacy of different types of mesh fixation for laparoscopic repair of inguinal hernia using network meta-analysis. METHODS We will systematically search PubMed, EMBASE the Cochrane library, and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database from their inception to March 2018. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared the effect of different types of mesh fixation for laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair will be included. The primary outcomes are chronic groin pain, incidence risk of hernia recurrence, and complications. Risk of bias assessment of the included RCTs will be conducted using to Cochrane risk of bias tool. A network meta-analysis will be performed using WinBUGS 1.4.3 software and the result figures will be generated using R x64 3.1.2 software and STATA V.12.0 software. Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) will be used to assess the quality of evidence. RESULTS The results of this study will be published in a peer-reviewed journal. CONCLUSION Our study will generate evidence of laparoscopic repair of mesh fixation for adult patients with inguinal hernia and provide suggestions for clinical practice or guideline.
