The maintenance of the second-order advantage: Second-order calibration of excitation–emission matrix fluorescence for quantitative analysis of herbicide napropamide in various environmental samples

Predictive Models of Phytosterol Degradation in Rapeseeds Stored in Bulk Based on Artificial Neural Networks and Response Surface Regression

The need to maintain the highest possible levels of bioactive components contained in raw materials requires the elaboration of tools supporting their processing operations, starting from the first stages of the food production chain. In this study, artificial neural networks (ANNs) and response surface regression (RSR) were used to develop models of phytosterol degradation in bulks of rapeseed stored under various temperatures and water activity conditions (T = 12–30 °C and a_w = 0.75–0.90). Among ANNs, networks based on a multilayer perceptron (MLP) and a radial basis function (RBF) were tested. The model input constituted a_w, temperature and storage time, whilst the model output was the phytosterol level in seeds. The ANN-based modeling turned out to be more effective in estimating phytosterol levels than the RSR, while MLP-ANNs proved to be more satisfactory than RBF-ANNs. The approximation quality of the ANNs models depended on the number of neurons and the type of activation functions in the hidden layer. The best model was provided by the MLP-ANN containing nine neurons in the hidden layer equipped with the logistic activation function. The model performance evaluation showed its high prediction accuracy and generalization capability (R² = 0.978; RMSE = 0.140). Its accuracy was also confirmed by the elliptical joint confidence region (EJCR) test. The results show the high usefulness of ANNs in predictive modeling of phytosterol degradation in rapeseeds. The elaborated MLP-ANN model may be used as a support tool in modern postharvest management systems.

Multilinear Mathematical Separation in Chromatography

Chromatography is a powerful and generally applicable method for the analytical separation and quantification of the chemical constituents in complex mixtures because chromatographic separation can provide high selectivity by isolating all analytes from interferences. Multiway analysis based on the multilinear model is an increasingly widely used method for interference-free and fast determination of the chemical constituents also in complex mixtures because multilinear mathematical separation can provide high selectivity by extracting the pure signal of the analyte from the mixed signal of a real sample. By combining chromatographic separation with mathematical separation, multiway calibration method, multiway standard additions method, and multiway internal standard method can be established. Chromatography assisted by multiway analysis can reduce the requirements for complete chromatographic separation, save elution time, and decrease the consumption of the mobile phase, particularly when the peak coelution problem is difficult to solve. This review presents the fundamentals and analytical applications of multilinear mathematical separation in chromatography.

Impact of diverse background interferences on the alternating trilinear decomposition modeling of excitation-emission matrix fluorescence data acquired from different sample sources

Alternating trilinear decomposition (ATLD) method enables the qualitative and quantitative analysis of excitation-emission matrix fluorescence (EEMF) data acquired from complex samples. However, the impact of diverse background interferences from different sample sources on the performances of ATLD method has never been lucubrated. In this work, simulated and real EEMF data sets from different sample sources with diverse background interferences were collected and subjected to ATLD analysis. The performances of ATLD modeling individual and global EEMF data sets were comprehensively compared in terms of the resolved spectral profiles and quantitative results. It was found that ATLD method can use the same set of calibration samples to resolve and quantify multiple components of interest in multiple complex systems with diverse background interferences, regardless of individual or global modeling. The results revealed that the qualitative and quantitative results provided by ATLD method were affected neither by diversity of background interferences nor by data merging as long as the acquired EEMF data sets conform to the trilinear component model. This property of ATLD method can enrich the "second-order advantage", i.e. the term "unknown interferences" in the concept of "second-order advantage" refers to not only constant background interferences but also diverse background interferences, which will be certain to further expand the practicality of ATLD method in complex sample analysis, especially in the field of fluorescence spectroscopy.

A Comparison of Second-Order Calibration Methods Applied to Excitation-Emission Matrix Fluorescence Data

Due to the variety of second-order data being generated by modern instruments and various mathematical algorithms being available for analysis purposes, second-order calibration is gaining widespread acceptance by analytical community. It has the so-called second-order advantage; that is, it enables concentration and spectral profiles of sample components to be extracted even in the presence of unexpected interferences. A comprehensive performance comparison of alternating trilinear decomposition (ATLD) and its two variants, that is, alternating penalty trilinear decomposition (APTLD) and self-weighted trilinear decomposition (SWATLD), was presented in this paper. The experiment was based on the simultaneous determination of three dihydroxybenzenes, that is, catechol, hydroquinone, and resorcinol, by excitation-emission matrix fluorescence (EEMF) spectroscopy. Two special measures, that is, the consistency (COS) between the resolved and actual profiles and the mean of recovery, were used for evaluation. The optimal result was obtained by the APTLD model with five components. No perceptible difference on the speed of convergence was found. It indicates that EEMF linked with the APTLD algorithm can serve as a potential tool of quantifying dihydroxybenzenes simultaneously in environmental samples.
