Determination of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in seawater using molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

Magnetic solid-phase extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from water samples using magnetic carbon nanofiber/MIL-101(Cr) nanocomposites

In this study, magnetic carbon nanofibers (Fe3O4@CNF) were modified with MIL-101(Cr) (Fe3O4@CNF@MIL-101) and used as sorbents for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) to extract polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from real water samples. Gas chromatography coupled with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID) was used for the determination of the PAHs. The effect of experimental variables on the extraction efficiency of PAHs was investigated and optimized. These variables include the quantity of sorbent, the kind and volume of the elution solvent, the duration of extraction and desorption, and the salt concentration. The linear range was found to be 0.01 to 200 ng mL-1 with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.9906 to 0.9931 after the effective extraction parameters were optimized. Its detection limits (LOD) were also calculated to be between 0.003 and 0.005 ng mL-1 (S/N = 3). The method's repeatability was tested at three different concentration levels (0.1, 1, and 10 ng mL-1), and relative standard deviations (RSDs%) were obtained in the range of 2.3 to 5.0%. Finally, using the MSPE-GC-FID method, PAHs were extracted from tap water, wastewater, seawater, and spring water samples. The relative recoveries were in the range of 95.7 to 99.8%.

Strategy of Choosing Templates in Molecular Imprinting to Expand the Recognition Width for Family-Selectivity

The class-selective molecular-imprinted polymers (MIPs) have shown the recognition ability to multiple targeted molecules through using one or multiple templates. However, choosing the right templates, the core problem, still lacks a systemic guide and decision-making. In this work, we propose a strategy of selecting templates through expanding the recognition width for the improvement of class-selectivity. First, three families of genotoxic impurity (GTI) were selected as model objects, and the spatial size and binding energy of each GTI-monomer complexes were obtained and compared by computational simulation. The two indexes of energy width (W_E) and size width (W_L) were introduced to compare the similarity and differences on the two recognition factors, binding strength and spatial size, among these GTIs in each family. Through shortening the width to increase similarity on binding energy and size, the dual templates in the aromatic amines (AI) family and sulfonic acid esters (SI) family were successfully selected. Correspondingly, the prepared dual-template MIPs in the two GTI families can simultaneously recognize all the GTIs comparing with that of single template MIP, respectively. Meanwhile, through comparing the adsorption capacity of the selected template and its analogues in one GTI family, the recognition efficiency of the dual-template MIPs was higher than that of the single-template MIP. This indicates that though using the selected right templates, the higher class-selectivity and the larger recognition width can be realized. Thus, this work can solve the problem of blind template selection, and provide the useful theoretical guidance for designing family-selective molecular imprinting.

Recent advances in the removal of emerging contaminants from water by novel molecularly imprinted materials in advanced oxidation processes-A review

Recently, there has been a global focus on effectively treating emerging contaminants (ECs) in water bodies. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are the primary technology used for ECs removal. However, the low concentrations of ECs make it difficult to overcome the interference of background substances in complex water quality, which limits the practical application of AOPs. To address this limitation, many researchers are developing new catalysts with preferential adsorption. Molecular imprinting technology (MIT) combined with conventional catalysts has been found to effectively enhance the selectivity of catalysts for the targeted catalytic degradation of pollutants. This review presents a comprehensive summary of the progress made in research on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) in the selective oxidation of ECs in water. The preparation methods, principles, and control points of novel MIP catalysts are discussed. Furthermore, the performance and mechanism of the catalysts in photocatalytic oxidation, electrocatalytic oxidation, and persulfate activation are analyzed with examples. The possible ecotoxicological risks of MIP catalysts are also discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects of applying MIP catalysts in AOP are presented along with proposed solutions. This review provides a better understanding of using MIP catalysts in AOPs to target the degradation of ECs.

In-vial solid-phase extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in drug formulations stored in packaging containing rubber

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of ubiquitous and persistent organic compounds that are significantly teratogenic, carcinogenic and mutagenic. Rubber stoppers commonly used in sterile formulation packaging materials often contain carbon black as the additive to enhance mechanical strength. However, PAHs may be formed during the production of carbon black, which could cause the drug formulations to be contaminated when contacting with the rubber stopper, and then enter the patient's body. The determination of PAHs in drug formulations is challenging, due to their trace amounts and matrix interference. Therefore, sample pretreatment is necessary and important. In this work, a novel technique, named in-vial solid-phase extraction (IVSPE), was developed for the selective extraction and enrichment of 16 PAHs in pharmaceuticals. The coated sample vial was directly used as the container for the whole process of sample pretreatment. As the solid-phase adsorbent, the coating was prepared by successively modifying the inner surface of a sample vial with polydopamine film and octadecylamine. PAHs could be selectively extracted through π-π stacking interaction and hydrophobic interaction, and then desorbed and enriched by a small amount of organic solvent. After systematic optimization of the coating preparation and the extraction process, the limits of detection and quantification of 16 PAHs were in the range of 0.002-0.60 ng mL^-1 and 0.007-2.00 ng mL^-1, respectively. Good linearities and precision of six repeated injections were obtained. The recoveries at three spiked concentration levels in normal saline were in the range of 62.72-106.90% with the relative standard deviation between 0.83% and 6.78%. Finally, PAHs in normal saline and powders for injection were extracted by established IVSPE, followed by separation and detection with high-performance liquid chromatography with a fluorescence detector and diode array detector (HPLC-FLD/DAD). It is worth noting that the preparation conditions of the adsorbent in the IVSPE method are mild, simple and green. Moreover, IVSPE has the advantages of having few work steps and avoiding the risk of contamination, because no special instrumentation or sample transfer is required. IVSPE could also be used for the pretreatment of multiple samples at the same time, which is beneficial to practical applications.

Bio-Inspired Imprinting Materials for Biomedical Applications

Inspired by the recognition mechanism of biological molecules, molecular imprinting techniques (MITs) are imparted with numerous merits like excellent stability, recognition specificity, adsorption properties, and easy synthesis processes, and thus broaden the avenues for convenient fabrication protocol of bio-inspired molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with desirable functions to satisfy the extensive demands of biomedical applications. Herein, the recent research progress made with respect to bio-inspired imprinting materials is discussed in this review. First, the underlying mechanism and basic components of a typical molecular imprinting procedure are briefly explored. Then, emphasis is put on the introduction of diverse MITs and novel bio-inspired imprinting materials. Following these two sections, practical applications of MIPs in the field of biomedical science are focused on. Last but not least, perspectives on the remaining challenges and future development of bio-inspired imprinting materials are presented.

Extraction optimization and quality evaluation of humic acids from lignite using the cell-free filtrate of Penicillium ortum MJ51

Bio-solubilization of lignite is a promising technology to transform coal into humic acids (HAs) which are broadly used in agriculture. In this work, HAs were extracted from lignite using the cell-free filtrate (CFF) of Penicillium ortum MJ51. The extraction method was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) based on the interactive effects of nitric acid concentrations, coal loading ratio, extraction temperature and time as input factors, and the absorbance of HAs at 450 nm wavelength as the output response. Under optimized conditions (lignite pretreated with 4.7 N HNO3, coal loading ratio of 4.9%, temperature of 77.3 °C and time of 8.6 hours), the absorbance at 450 nm peaked at 70.28, and the concentration and extraction yield of HAs were 31.3 g L-1 and 63.9%, respectively, which were dramatically higher than those observed for traditional biological methods (0.7 g L-1 and 14.1%, respectively). The qualities of HAs produced under optimized conditions were evaluated and compared with those extracted by the conventional chemical method. The optimized process resulted in better HA quality indices, including lower molecular mass; higher nitrogen; less aromatic carbon; more aliphatic and carboxylic carbon; and higher bioactivity for promoting plant growth. Moreover, the anti-flocculation ability was improved, thereby supporting its applicability in agriculture. Extraction of HAs from lignite using the CFF of P. ortum MJ51 provides a novel technological approach for the efficient conversion of lignite to bio-active HAs.

Novel perspectives of environmental proteomics

The connection among genome expression, proteome alteration, metabolism regulation and phenotype change under environmental stresses is very vague. It is a tough task for the traditional research approaches to reveal the related scientific mechanisms of the above connection at molecular and systematic levels. Proteomics approach is an insightful tool for revealing the biological functions, metabolic networks and functional protein interaction networks of cells and organisms under stresses at the systematic level. The purpose of this review is to provide an insightful guideline on how to set up a proteomic investigation for revealing biomolecule mechanisms, protein biomarkers and metabolism networks related to stress response, pollutant recognition, transport and biodegradation, and providing an insightful high-throughput approach for screening functional enzymes and effective microbes based on bioinformatics and functional verification method. Furthermore, the toxicity evaluation of pollutants and byproducts by proteomics approaches provides a scientific insight for early diagnosis of ecological risk and determination of the effectiveness of pollutant treatment techniques.

Review on molecular imprinting technology and its application in pre-treatment and detection of marine organic pollutants

Molecular imprinting technology (MIT) has been considered as an attractive method to produce artificial receptors with the memory of size, shape and functional groups of the templates and has become an emerging technique with the potential in various fields due to recognitive specificity, high efficient selectivity and mechanical stability, which can effectively remove background interference and is suitable for the pre-treatment and analysis of trace level substances in complex matrix samples. Nearly 100 papers about the application of MIT in the detection of marine pollutants were found through Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). On this basis, combined with the application of MIT in other fields, the pre-treatment process of marine environmental samples was summarized and the potential of four types of different molecularly imprinted materials in the pre-treatment and detection of marine organic pollutants (including antibiotics, triazines, organic dyes, hormones and shellfish toxins) samples was evaluated, which provides the innovative configurations and progressive applications for the analysis of marine samples, and also highlights future trends and perspectives in the emerging research field.

A thin-layer solid-phase extraction-liquid film elution technique used for the enrichment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water

In this article, we propose a novel microsolid-phase extraction and elution technique, which we called the thin-layer solid-phase extraction-liquid film elution technique. The thin-layer solid-phase extraction phase is an octadecylsilylated sol gel- coated porous silica thin film prepared on the outer wall of a test tube, which has a larger surface area for the extraction of the target compounds compared to a conventional solid-phase microextraction phase. After optimization of the extraction procedure for five types of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the liquid film elution technique was investigated. Liquid film elution is an elution technique wherein the compounds extracted into the thin-layer solid-phase extraction phase are eluted using a small volume of solvent film formed around the extraction phase. The results show that the elution can be carried out using 150 μL of eluent. Enrichment factors between 20 and 34 were obtained for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons containing more than four aromatic rings in 10 mL aliquots of aqueous samples. Finally, recoveries of 85-112% were obtained for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons containing more than four aromatic rings from spiked natural water samples using the thin-layer solid-phase extraction-liquid film elution technique.

Recent Advances in the Extraction of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Environmental Samples

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) comprise a group of chemical compounds consisting of two or more fused benzene rings. PAHs exhibit hydrophobicity and low water solubility, while some of their members are toxic substances resistant to degradation. Due to their low levels in environmental matrices, a preconcentration step is usually required for their determination. Nowadays, there is a wide variety of sample preparation techniques, including micro-extraction techniques (e.g., solid-phase microextraction and liquid phase microextraction) and miniaturized extraction techniques (e.g., dispersive solid-phase extraction, magnetic solid-phase extraction, stir bar sorptive extraction, fabric phase sorptive extraction etc.). Compared to the conventional sample preparation techniques, these novel techniques show some benefits, including reduced organic solvent consumption, while they are time and cost efficient. A plethora of adsorbents, such as metal-organic frameworks, carbon-based materials and molecularly imprinted polymers, have been successfully coupled with a wide variety of extraction techniques. This review focuses on the recent advances in the extraction techniques of PAHs from environmental matrices, utilizing novel sample preparation approaches and adsorbents.

SERS-Based Molecularly Imprinted Plasmonic Sensor for Highly Sensitive PAH Detection

A novel hybrid plasmonic platform based on the synergetic combination of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) thin film with Au nanoparticle (NPs) assemblies, noted as Au@MIP, was developed for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy recognition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). While the MIP trapped the PAH close to the Au surface, the plasmonic NPs enhanced the molecule's Raman signal. The Au@MIP fabrication comprises a two-step procedure, first, the layer-by-layer deposition of Au NPs on glass and their further coating with a uniform MIP thin film. Profilometry analysis demonstrated that the thickness and homogeneity of the MIP film could be finely tailored by tuning different parameters such as prepolymerization time or spin-coating rate. Two different PAH molecules, pyrene or fluoranthene, were used as templates for the fabrication of pyrene- or fluoranthene-based Au@MIP substrates. The use of pyrene or fluoranthene, as the template molecule to fabricate the Au@MIP thin films, enabled its ultradetection in the nM regime with a 100-fold improvement compared with the nonimprinted plasmonic sensors (Au@NIPs). The SERS data analysis allowed to estimate the binding constant of the template molecule to the MIP. The selectivity of both pyrene- and fluoranthene-based Au@MIPs was analyzed against three PAHs of different sizes. The results displayed the important role of the template molecule used for the Au@MIPs fabrication in the selectivity of the system. Finally, the practical applicability of pyrene-based Au@MIPs was shown by performing the detection of pyrene in two real samples: creek water and seawater. The design and optimization of this type of plasmonic platform will pave the way for the detection of other relevant (bio)molecules in a broad range of fields such as environmental control, food safety, or biomedicine.

Materials for Solid-Phase Extraction of Organic Compounds

This review provides an overview of the most recent developments involving materials for solid-phase extraction applied to determine organic contaminants. It mainly concerns polymer-based sorbents that include high-capacity, as well as selective sorbents, inorganic-based sorbents that include those prepared using sol-gel technology along with structured porous materials based on inorganic species, and carbon nanomaterials, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes. Different types of magnetic nanoparticles coated with these materials are also reviewed. Such materials, together with their main morphological and chemical features, are described, as are some representative examples of their application as solid-phase extraction materials to extract organic compounds from different types of samples, including environmental water, biological fluids, and food.

Theoretical and experimental proof for selective response of imprinted sorbent - analysis of hordenine in human urine

The objective of this paper was to extend comprehensive theoretical and experimental investigations at the molecular level to identify factors responsible for the high selectivity of imprinted sorbents. This knowledge was utilized in a new analytical strategy devoted to the analysis of hordenine in human urine after beer consumption. Among the various polymeric compositions tested, the most effective material was built up from methacrylic acid and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (MIP1), showing a satisfactory binding capacity (4.44 ± 0.15 µmol g^-1) and high specificity towards hordenine (AF = 5.90). The comprehensive analyses of porosity data and surface measurements revealed differences between imprinted polymers. The characterization of binding sites of MIP1 revealed a heterogeneous population with two values of K_d (2.75 and 370 μmol L^-1) and two values of B_max (1.82 and 99 μmol g^-1) for higher and lower affinity respectively. The extensive theoretical analyses of interactions between various analytes and the MIP model cavity showed the highest binding energy for hordenine (ΔE_B1 = -175.17 kcal mol^-1). The method was validated for selectivity, lowest limit of quantification, calibration curve performance, precision, accuracy, matrix effect, carry-over and stability in urine. Extracts were prepared according to guidelines of the European Medicines Agency. The validation criteria were fulfilled, and the method was satisfactorily applied to urine samples collected prior to, and 2 h after, consumption of 2 L of beer, revealing the presence of hordenine at the mean level of 129 ± 27 ng mL^-1. Additionally, ability of the sorbent to purify the urine sample was assessed using flow injection analysis tandem mass spectrometry, for comparison with other extraction techniques.

Extraction of atenolol from spiked blood serum using a molecularly imprinted polymer sorbent obtained by precipitation polymerization

Atenolol (ATE) is a cardio-selective β-blocker that is used in the treatment of hypertension over extended periods. However, ATE, like propranolol, has major potential for misuse as a performance-enhancing drug in several sports. Therefore, an efficient and selective separation method is required to detect and monitor the level of ATE in the body. This paper presents a molecularly imprinted polymer with specific and selective binding to ATE using precipitation polymerization. We show that when employed in an optimized molecular imprinted solid phase extraction (MI-SPE) protocol, recoveries of 93.65 ± 1.29% from spiked blood serum with excellent discrimination from other β-blocker drugs is possible. The methodology used in this study includes molecular modeling interaction between ATE and itaconic acid (ITA) as functional monomer, followed by determination of binding constants with spectrophotometry, synthesis of the polymer using precipitation polymerization and ending with characterization and application of polymers to extract ATE in serum. Docking analysis revealed a binding affinity between ATE and ITA of −2.0 kcal/mol with the formation of hydrogen bonding. The association constant between ATE and ITA was studied by UV titration in two different solvents, with evidence of an association constant 6.277 × 10² M⁻¹ measured in acetonitrile: methanol (1:1). An optimized MI-SPE protocol was developed for the extraction of ATE from spiked blood serum, obtaining recoveries of 93.65% with excellent selectivity toward other β-blocker drugs.

Dual-template molecularly imprinted polymers for dispersive solid-phase extraction of fluoroquinolones in water samples coupled with high performance liquid chromatography

Adsorption and determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water through the aggregation of graphene oxide

In this study, a simple method was developed for the aggregation of graphene oxide (GO) with the addition of NaCl to concentrate and separate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from water samples, and this method was used as a environmentally friendly method for the determination of PAHs. We demonstrate the uniform dispersion of GO sheets in aqueous samples for the fast high-efficiency adsorption of PAHs. Aggregation occurred immediately upon elimination of electrostatic repulsion by adding NaCl to neutralize the excessive negative charges on the surfaces of the GO sheets. The aggregates of GO and PAHs were separated and treated with hexane to form a slurry. The slurry was filtered and subjected to gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis. Based on a 40-mL sample volume, limits of detection of 10–30 ng L-1were obtained for 16 PAHs, with correlation coefficients (R2) exceeding 0.99. The method yielded good recovery, ranging from 80 to 111% and 80 to 107% for real spiked water samples at 100 and 500 ng L-1, respectively. Compared to traditional solid-phase extraction and liquid–liquid extraction methods, this method is free of organic reagents in the pretreatment procedure and uses only 1 mL hexane for sample introduction.

Marine environment pollution: The contribution of mass spectrometry to the study of seawater

The study of marine pollution has been traditionally addressed to persistent chemicals, generally known as priority pollutants; a current trend in environmental analysis is a shift toward "emerging pollutants," defined as newly identified or previously unrecognized contaminants. The present review is focused on the peculiar contribution of mass spectrometry (MS) to the study of pollutants in the seawater compartment. The work is organized in five paragraphs where the most relevant groups of pollutants, both "classical" and "emerging," are presented and discussed, highlighting the relative data obtained by the means of different MS techniques. The hyphenation of MS and separative techniques, together with the development of different ion sources, makes MS and tandem MS the analytical tool of choice for the determination of trace organic contaminants in seawater. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In Situ Miniaturised Solid Phase Extraction (m-SPE) for Organic Pollutants in Seawater Samples

Solid phase extraction (SPE) is a consolidated technique for determining pollutants in seawater samples. The current tendency is to miniaturise systems that extract and determine pollutants in the environment, reducing the use of organic solvents, while maintaining the quality in the extraction and preconcentration. On the other hand, there is a need to develop new extraction systems that can be fitted to in situ continual monitoring buoys, especially for the marine environment. This work has developed a first model of a low-pressure micro-SPE (m-SPE) for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that can be simply applied to in situ monitoring in the marine environment. This system reduces the volumes of sample and solvents required in the laboratory in comparison with conventional SPE. In the future, it could be used in automated or robotic systems in marine technologies such as marine gliders and oceanographic buoys. This system has been optimised and validated to determine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in seawater samples, but it could also be applied to other kinds of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and emerging pollutants.

Silicon carbide nanomaterial as a coating for solid-phase microextraction

Silicon carbide has excellent properties, such as corrosion resistance, high strength, oxidation resistance, high temperature, and so on. Based on these properties, silicon carbide was coated on stainless-steel wire and used as a solid-phase microextraction coating, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were employed as model analytes. Using gas chromatography, some important factors that affect the extraction efficiency were optimized one by one, and an analytical method was established. The analytical method showed wide linear ranges (0.1-30, 0.03-30, and 0.01-30 μg/L) with satisfactory correlation coefficients (0.9922-0.9966) and low detection limits (0.003-0.03 μg/L). To investigate the practical application of the method, rainwater and cigarette ash aqueous solution were collected as real samples for extraction and detection. The results indicate that silicon carbide has excellent application in the field of solid-phase microextraction.

Hydrophilic Multitemplate Molecularly Imprinted Biopolymers Based on a Green Synthesis Strategy for Determination of B-Family Vitamins

A novel green synthesis strategy was proposed for preparation of multitemplate molecularly imprinted biopolymers (mt-MIBP) in aqueous media with less consumption of organic solvents, which were subsequently used as sorbents of ultrasound-assisted dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) for simultaneous recognition and efficient separation of B-family vitamins in juice samples, followed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) determination. The obtained mt-MIBP was fully characterized by SEM, FT-IR, TEM, and BET. It offered high binding capacity, good selectivity, and fast dynamics toward all the templates. Involved parameters in the d-SPE efficiency such as mt-MIBP mass, sonication time, and eluting/washing solvents' types and volumes were concurrently investigated by central composite design with rapidity and reliability. Under the optimum conditions, the developed mt-MIBP-d-SPE-HPLC method exhibited wide linear range, low limits of detection and quantification (LOQs) within 1.2-5.5 μg L^-1 and 4.0-18.4 μg L^-1, respectively, and appropriate repeatability (relative standard deviation values below 4.2%, n = 4). The high selectivity of this method makes it suitable for successful monitoring of vitamins in juice samples with satisfactory recoveries of 75.8-92.7%, 81.1-92.5%, and 84.7-93.8% for vitamins riboflavin (B₂), nicotinamide (B₃), and pyridoxine (B₆), respectively. The present study implied highly promising perspectives of water-compatible eco-friendly mt-MIBP for highly effective multiresidue analysis in complicated matrixes.

Selective determination of semi-volatile thiophene compounds in water by molecularly imprinted polymer thin films with direct headspace gas chromatography sulfur chemiluminescence detection

Water-compatible molecularly imprinted polymer films are coupled with headspace gas chromatography sulfur chemiluminescence detection (HS-GC-SCD) for the determination of thiophenes in water.
