Facile and tunable fabrication of Fe3O4/graphene oxide nanocomposites and their application in the magnetic solid-phase extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from environmental water samples

Single-Round Circular Aptamer Discovery Using Bioinspired Magnetosome-Like Magnetic Chain Cross-Linked Graphene Oxide

Circular aptamers are promising candidates for analytical and therapeutic applications due to their enhanced biological and structural stability. However, the process of circular aptamer selection remains a great challenge, as it requires multiple rounds of binding-separation-amplification that involves issues with nonspecific binding and amplification bias. Here, we develop a highly practical solution for reliable selection of circular aptamers in a single round based on magnetosome-like magnetic chain cross-linked graphene oxide (separation efficiency ≈ 105). High-affinity aptamer candidates can be rapidly selected from a preenriched circular DNA library, while low-affinity candidates are effectively adsorbed and separated by magnetosome-like magnetic chain cross-linked graphene oxide. With lipopolysaccharide as a representative model, the single-round selected lipopolysaccharide circular aptamer has been identified to have a high binding affinity with a Kd value of low to nanomolar range. Using this method, circular aptamers for protein and small-molecule targets were also successfully generated. We envision that this approach will accelerate the discovery of various new circular aptamers and open up a new avenue for analytical and therapeutic studies.

Facile construction of magnetic solid-phase extraction of polyaniline blend poly(amidoamine) dendrimers modified graphene oxide quantum dots for efficient adsorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in environmental water

An efficient magneto-adsorbent composed of polyaniline blend poly(amidoamine) dendrimers modified graphene oxide quantum dots and magnetic Fe3O4 particles (Fe3O4@PANI-PSS/PAMAM-QGO) for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environmental water was synthesized. Fe3O4@PANI-PSS/PAMAM-QGO exhibited exceptional adsorption property for most PAHs analytes. The nanocomposite sorbent demonstrated a ferromagnetic behavior of 17.457 emu g-1, which is adequate for subsequent use in MSPE. Key parameters affecting the processes of adsorption and desorption, including the sorbent amount, vortex adsorption time, vortex extraction time, sample volume, a solvent for desorption and the solvent volume were all examined and optimized. The performance of MSPE using Fe3O4@PANI-PSS/PAMAM-QGO as adsorbent for four PAHs, including fluoranthene, acenaphthene, phenanthrene and pyrene were studied through high performance liquid chromatography equipped with spectrofluorometer. Under the optimal conditions, Fe3O4@PANI-PSS/PAMAM-QGO showed a wide linearity of 10-1,000 ng mL-1, low detection limit (LOD) ranging from 1.92 to 4.25 ng mL -1 and high accuracy (recoveries of 93.6-96.5 %). Enrichment factors up to 185 were achieved. Furthermore, Fe3O4@PANI-PSS/PAMAM-QGO exhibited good recyclability (10 times, RSDs ≤ 5.35%), while maintaining its high efficiency in the extraction of PAHs. The proposed method was successfully applied for environmental samples. Recoveries ranging from 81.2 to 106.2 % were obtained, indicating a low matrix effect and the robustness of the optimized MSPE method. Based on these features and under the optimal extraction conditions, Fe3O4@PANI-PSS/PAMAM-QGO was demonstrated to be a successful tool for the rapid and sensitive extraction of PAHs in the samples.

Magnetic graphene oxide carbon dot nanocomposites as an efficient quantification tool against parabens in water and cosmetic samples

A new method is developed for the simultaneous detection and extraction of parabens, including methyl paraben (MP), ethyl paraben (EP), propyl paraben (PP), and butyl paraben (BP), based on magnetic graphene oxide carbon dot nanocomposites (Fe3O4@GO@CD). Fe3O4@GO@CD has been synthesized using one pot hydrothermal method by intercalating iron oxide and carbon dots between the layers of graphene oxide. Fe3O4@GO@CD was applied as the magnetic solid phase sorbent for the simultaneous extraction and detection of parabens from water (tap and river water) and cosmetic samples (hair serum and sunscreen cream). MP was measured at concentration of 0.25-0.26 ng/mL in hair serum, while PP at 0.32-0.33 ng/mL in sunscreen cream. Notably, good recoveries (88.74-98.03%; RSD = 2.31-6.88%) for river and tap water with detection limit of 0.039-0.046 ng/mL were attained. The method has good cyclability up to 16 cycles and was highly repeatable. All these findings suggest that the Fe3O4@GO@CD would be potential sorbent for the analysis of parabens.

Viologen-functionalized magnetic material for the removal of Iodine and benzanthracene in an aqueous solution

The development of magnetically active adsorbents for effective iodine removal would be highly desirable to address environmental pollution and remediation. Herein, we demonstrated the synthesis of Vio@SiO₂@Fe₃O₄ as an adsorbent via surface functionalisation of electron-deficient bipyridium (viologen) units on the surface of magnetically active silica-coated magnetite (Fe₃O₄) core. This adsorbent was characterised thoroughly using various analytical techniques, such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), thermal gravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis and X-ray photon analysis (XPS). The removal of triiodide from the aqueous solution was monitored via the batch method. It revealed that the complete removal was achieved upon stirring for 70 min. The thermally stable and crystalline Vio@SiO₂@Fe₃O₄ displayed efficient removal capacity even in the presence of other competing ions and at different pHs. The adsorption kinetics data were analysed following the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. Further, the isotherm experiment showed that the maximum uptake capacity of iodine is 1.38 g/g. It can be regenerated and reused over multiple cycles to capture iodine. Further, Vio@SiO₂@Fe₃O₄ displayed a good removal capacity toward toxic polyaromatic, Benzanthracene (BzA) pollutant with an uptake capacity of 2445 μg/g. This effective removal of toxic pollutants iodine/benzanthracene was attributed to the strong non-covalent electrostatic and π-π interaction with electron-deficient bipyridium units.

The Impact of Solution Ionic Strength, Hardness, and pH on the Sorption Efficiency of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Magnetic Nanocomposite Microparticle (MNM) Gels

Environmental conditions of groundwater and surface water greatly vary as a function of location. Factors such as ionic strength, water hardness, and solution pH can change the physical and chemical properties of the nanocomposites used in remediation and the pollutants of interest. In this work, magnetic nanocomposite microparticle (MNM) gels are used as sorbents for remediation of PCB 126 as model organic contaminant. Three MNM systems are used: curcumin multiacrylate MNMs (CMA MNMs), quercetin multiacrylate MNMs (QMA MNMs), and polyethylene glycol-400-dimethacrylate MNMs (PEG MNMs). The effect of ionic strength, water hardness, and pH were studied on the sorption efficiency of the MNMs for PCB 126 by performing equilibrium binding studies. It is seen that the ionic strength and water hardness have a minimal effect on the MNM gel system sorption of PCB 126. However, a decrease in binding was observed when the pH increased from 6.5 to 8.5, attributed to anion-π interactions between the buffer ions in solution and the PCB molecules as well as with the aromatic rings of the MNM gel systems. Overall, the results indicate that the developed MNM gels can be used as magnetic sorbents for polychlorinated biphenyls in groundwater and surface water remediation, provided that the solution pH is controlled.

The elimination and extraction of organosulfur compounds from real water and soil samples using metal organic framework/graphene oxide as a novel and efficient nanocomposite

In the present work, an efficient metal organic framework/graphene oxide (MOF-801/GO) sorbent was fabricated and employed for the detection of organosulfur pesticides (OSPs) in real samples using gas chromatography-flame photometric detection (GC-FPD). The optimal extraction parameters for the suggested solid-phase extraction (SPE) include sorbent amount (60 mg), extraction solvent (acetonitrile) and extraction time (5 min). The linear dynamic ranges and detection limits for organosulfur pesticides (OSPs) samples under above extraction conditions were ranged from 0.5 to 300 μg L^-1 and 0.1-1.1 μg L^-1, respectively. Moreover, the proposed SPE/GC-FDP method was applied for the analysis of pesticides in different real environmental water and soil samples. The obtained recoveries of the analytes in were between 92.0 and 106.8% and relative standard deviation (RSD) values were lower than 9.2%. The application of the MOF-801/GO as a sorbent in dSPE of OSPs analytes showed to be reliable, fast and sensible methodology for pesticides monitoring in different environmental samples.

Magnetic solid-phase extraction based on GO/Fe3O4 coupled with UPLC-MS/MS for determining nitroimidazoles and their metabolites in honey

A magnetic graphene oxide (GO/Fe₃O₄) nanocomposite was synthesized in one step by a chemical coprecipitation method, which was further used for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). This study aimed to combine GO/Fe₃O₄ with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) to detect the nitroimidazoles (NDZs) and their three major metabolites in honey samples. GO/Fe₃O₄ was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and magnetic property measurement system (MPMS), and the influencing parameters such as adsorbent amount, pH of the dissolved sample solution, sample volume, type and volume of the eluent, shaking speed, and adsorption and desorption time were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the limits of detection (LOD) and quantitation (LOQ) of the method were 0.003-0.08 μg kg^-1 and 0.009-0.3 μg kg^-1, respectively, with good linearity reported in the range of 0.5-20 μg kg^-1 (R² ≥ 0.9991). The average recoveries of 10 analytes were in the range of 66.0%-90.8% with relative standard deviations (RSD) lower than 6.9% (n = 6). The preparation of GO/Fe₃O₄ and the extraction process were convenient and rapid, and consumed small amounts of organic solvents. The optimized method was successfully applied for extracting NDZs and their three major metabolites from honey samples with good accuracy.

Simultaneous precipitation and discharge plasma processing for one-step synthesis of α-Fe2O3-Fe3O4/graphene visible light magnetically separable photocatalysts

A novel facile combination of precipitation and plasma discharge reaction is successfully employed for one-step synthesis of an α-Fe₂O₃-Fe₃O₄ graphene nanocomposite (GFs). The co-existence and anchoring of hematite (α-Fe₂O₃) and magnetite (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles onto a graphene sheet in the as synthesized GFs were verified by results of XRD, Raman, SEM, TEM, and XPS. HRTEM characterization was used for confirming the bonding between α-Fe₂O₃/Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and the graphene sheet. Consequently, GFs shows superior photodegrading performance towards methylene blue (MB), compared to individual α-Fe₂O₃/Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles, as a result of band gap narrowing and the electron-hole pair recombination rate reducing. Moreover, GFs allows a good possibility of separating and recycling under an external-magnetic field, suggesting potential in visible-light-promoted photocatalytic applications.

Study on the Preparation and Optical Properties of Graphene Oxide@Fe3O4 Two-Dimensional Magnetically Oriented Nanocomposites

In this work, graphene oxide@Fe3O4 (GO@Fe3O4) two-dimensional magnetically oriented nanocomposites were prepared through the co-precipitation approach using graphene oxide as the carrier and FeCl3·6H2O and FeSO4·7H2O as iron sources. The samples were characterized and tested by X-ray diffraction, a transmission electron microscope, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, a vibrating-specimen magnetometer, a polarized optical microscope, an optical microscope, etc. The effects of material ratios and reaction conditions on the coating effects of Fe3O4 on the GO surface were investigated. The stable GO@Fe3O4 sol system was studied and constructed, and the optical properties of the GO@Fe3O4 sol were revealed. The results demonstrated the GO@Fe3O4 two-dimensional nanocomposites uniformly coated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles were successfully prepared. The GO@Fe3O4 two-dimensional nanocomposites exhibited superparamagnetic properties at room temperature, whose coercive force was 0. The stable GO@Fe3O4 sol system could be obtained by maintaining 1 < pH < 1.5. The GO@Fe3O4 sol showed magneto-orientation properties, liquid crystalline properties, and photonic crystal properties under the influence of the external magnetic field. The strength and direction of the magnetic field and the solid content of the GO@ Fe3O4 sol could regulate the aforementioned properties. The results suggest that GO@Fe3O4 two-dimensional magnetically oriented nanocomposites have potential applications in photonic switches, gas barriers, and display devices.

Application of sulfur-coated magnetic carbon nanotubes for extraction of some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from water resources

In the present work, novel sulfur-coated magnetic carbon nanotubes (MCNTs-S) material was fabricated by S coating on the MCNTs using a simple heating procedure. TGA, EDX, XRD, TEM, and VSM were employed to characterize the as-prepared composite. Using HPLC-UV system, the produced superparamagnetic sorbent was employed for the extraction and measurement of trace levels of five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environmental waters. The synergistic effect of the sulfur layer and CNTs substrate is primarily responsible for the remarkable extraction efficiency of the MCNTs-S sorbent towards PAHs. The experimental factors including MCNTs-S dosage, sorption time, elution solvent, ionic strength and solution pH were explored and optimized. Considering that the ionic strength and pH do not have any impact on the PAHs extraction, as a result, there is no need the unnecessary adjustment of the water samples. The linear dynamic ranges and detection limits under optimal conditions were in the range of 0.05-0.11 ng mL^-1 and 0.2-150 ng mL^-1, respectively. The analysis of PAHs in the real samples (sea water and river water) using this approach was successfully assessed with appropriate recovery values (94.6%-99.0%).

The extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from water samples with aromatic-dithiocarbamate modified magnetic nanoparticles

Considering the urgent need for the analysis of trace-level pollutants in water samples, the pre-concentration of micropollutants in water samples has been the focus of extensive research. Among current pretreatment methods, the solid phase extraction (SPE) technique has received enormous attention because of its low cost, ease of operation and high efficiency. In this work, a new adsorbent (Fe₃O₄@Au@DTC NPs) was acquired through modification of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) with gold (Au) and dithiocarbamate (DTC). To investigate their application ability, the adsorbent were utilized as an SPE adsorbent to enrich polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water (PAHs, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo anthracene, benzo fluoranthene, benzo pyrene). The obtained Fe₃O₄@Au@DTC NPs were confirmed by transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and UV-Vis spectrum. Under optimal conditions, the calibration curves were obtained in the range of 10-500 ng L^-1, while the limit of detection (LOD) ranged in 1.17-2.31 ng L^-1. Furthermore, 50 mg of Fe₃O₄@Au@DTC NPs could extract trace PAHs from 500 mL real water samples into 1 mL eluent, and the spiked recoveries of five PAHs in river water and tap water reached 72-106% with relative standard deviations varying between 3.3-5.18%. Through the conversion of amines into DTC, we acquire desiring group modified Fe₃O₄ NPs, which showed great prospects in magnetic solid-phase extraction sphere and environmental field.

Fe3O4@SiO2@VAN Nanoadsorbent Followed by GC-MS for the Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons at Ultra-Trace Levels in Environmental Water Samples

In the present study, silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with vancomycin (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@VAN) were synthesized. The Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@VAN nanocomposite was used as a sorbent for the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from environmental water, followed by GC-MS. The nanocomposite was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and nitrogen sorption. Various experimental parameters were optimized, including extraction condition and desorption condition. Results show that Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@VAN combined the advantages of nanomaterials and magnetic separation technology, showing excellent dispersibility and high selectivity for PAHs in environmental water sample. Under the optimal extraction conditions, an analytical method was established with the sensitive limit of detection (LOD) of 0.03-0.16 μg L^-1. The method was successfully applied for the analysis of environmental water samples. The relative standard deviations (%) were in the range of 0.50-12.82%, and the extraction recovery (%) was in the range of 82.48% and 116.32%. MSPE-coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry quantification of PAHs is an accurate and repeatable method for the monitoring of PAH accumulation in environmental water samples. It also provides an effective strategy for the tracing and quantification of other environmental pollutants in complex samples.

Integrated ultrasound-assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction for efficient determination and pre-concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from high-consumption soft drinks and non-alcoholic beers in Iran

In the present research, an ultrasound-assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction coupled with a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry hybrid system was developed for extraction/determination of trace amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in high-consumption soft drinks and non-alcoholic beers in Iran using magnetite graphene oxide adsorbent. The magnetite graphene oxide was characterized by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating-sample magnetometer techniques. The highest extraction recovery (73.05 to 95.56%) and enrichment factor (90.65 to 106.38) were obtained at adsorbent mass: 10 mg, adsorption time: 30 min, salt addition: sodium chloride 10% w/v, desorption time: 20 min, eluent type: hexane: acetone (1:1, v/v), and desorption solvent volumes: 200 μL. Under optimum conditions, the linearity range for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons determination was 0.2-200 ng mL^-1  with coefficient of determination> 0.993, limit of detection = 0.09-0.21 ng mL^-1 , limit of quantitation = 0.3-0.7 ng mL^-1 , and relative standard deviation < 8.1%, respectively. Relative recoveries in spiked real samples ranged from 94.67 to 109.45 % with standard deviation < 6.05%. The proposed method is effective, sensitive, reusable and it is promising for the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons residues in environmental samples. Determination of aflatoxin B1 in Pixian Douban based on aptamer magnetic solid-phase extraction

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB₁) is considered as the most prevalent and toxic mycotoxin in food, and is the indispensable index in the monitoring of Pixian Douban, a traditional chinese fermented bean paste from Sichuan. However, the effeciency of AFB₁ detection in Pixian Douban is influenced by the traditional extraction, which is usually complex and time consuming. Therefore, an aptamer-based magnetic solid-phase extraction method was designed for the pretreatment of AFB₁ in this sample, for which Fe₃O₄ was synthesized via the solvothermal method and then a Fe₃O₄@SiO₂–NH₂ with a core–shell structure was prepared, followed by an AFB₁-aptamer attachment. The validation was performed via an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and compared with HPLC-MS/MS. The linearity range of this method was 0.5–2.0 ng mL ⁻¹ with R² of 0.981, and recoveries of AFB₁ ranged from 80.19% to 113.92% with RSDs below 7.28% with no significant differences compared to HPLC-MS/MS. The three-time reusability efficiencies of aptamer-MNPs were averaged at 78.24%. The results proved that aptamer-MNPs were high-performance adsorbents for extracting and enriching AFB₁, facilitating quick and effective detection of AFB₁ in Pixian DouBan samples.

An aptamer-based magnetic solid-phase extraction method was designed for the pretreatment of AFB1 from a Pixian Douban sample. It was developed based on aptamer–Fe₃O₄@SiO₂–NH₂ with subsequent ELISA validation, showing an efficient result.

Graphene oxide modified magnetic polyamidoamide dendrimers based magnetic solid phase extraction for sensitive measurement of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

In this study, graphene oxide modified magnetic polyamidoamine dendrimers (MNPs@PAMAM-G2.0@GO) nanoparticles were successfully prepared by amidation method. The obtained MNPs@PAMAM-G2.0@GO nanocomposites were examined by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), etc. MNPs@PAMAM-G2.0@GO exhibited excellent adsorption property and was investigated for magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from water. The detection of extracted PAHs was accomplished by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The target PAHs included anthracene (ANT), pyrene (PYR), fluoranthene (FLT), carbazole (CB), 7-methylquinoline (7-MQL), 9-methylcarbazole (9-MCB), dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DBT). Important operation parameters for MSPE that could affect the extraction efficiencies of PAHs were investigated in detail. Under optimal parameters, the constructed method demonstrated excellent linear range with 0.001-10 μg L^-1 for analytes and low limits of detection within the range of 0.11-0.9 ng L^-1. The spiked average recoveries of PAHs in natural water samples ranged from 92.5% to 105.2%. The promising results indicated that MNPs@PAMAM-G2.0@GO could be employed to efficiently extract PAHs from aqueous samples.

Dispersive solid phase extraction based on reduced graphene oxide modified Fe3O4 nanocomposite for trace determination of parabens in rock, soil, moss, seaweed, feces, and water samples from Horseshoe and Faure Islands

This study reports an efficient, green, sensitive and simple analytical protocol for trace determination of methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, propyl paraben, butylparaben and benzyl paraben by high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV). The analytes were preconcentrated using an ultrasonication supported (US) dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) method based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) modified iron nanoparticles (US-Fe₃O₄@rGO-DSPE). A reversed-phase C18 column and an isocratic elution program comprising of 20 mM phosphate buffer (pH 4.50) and acetonitrile(58:42, v/v) were used to elute and separate the analytes for detection. The limits of detection determined for the analytes were very low and were in the range of 0.02 - 0.16 ng mL^-1. The coefficients of determination obtained for the analytes ranged from 0.9973 to 0.9998, and this validated good linearity of the method.Percent relative standard deviations obtained in the range of 2.5 - 10.6% verified the method's high intraday repeatability. Accuracy of the proposed method was assessed with spiking experiments performed on complex sample matrices. Percent recoveries calculated for spiked soil, artificial seawater and seaweed samples were in acceptable ranges of 95 - 121%, 87 - 117% and 85 - 111%, respectively. These figures of merit suggest that HPLC-UV coupled with the US-Fe₃O₄@rGO-DSPEmethod is suitable for the determination of parabens in Antarctic samples.

Photocatalytic degradation of cefixime in aqueous solutions using functionalized SWCNT/ZnO/Fe3O4 under UV-A irradiation

In this study, SWCNT/ZnO/Fe₃O₄ heterojunction composite was prepared for enhancing the degradation of β-lactam drugs such as cefixime (CFX) from an aqueous solution. The effects of several factors such as pH, initial concentration of CFX, and photocatalyst dose were investigated. Among them, pH was the most effective parameter for the degradation of CFX. Pareto graph revealed that the degradation process was accelerated at acidic conditions. The surface morphology test such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied to enlighten the surface of the functionalized SWCNT/ZnO/Fe₃O₄ photocatalyst. Highly advanced analyzes such as X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (EDX), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and point of zero charge were included to explain the structure of the photocatalyst. The response surface methodology's results show that the optimum CFX efficiency was fully achieved at 94.19%. The optimal conditions with lower standard error (2.08) were given as pH of 5.93, 22.76 ppm of CFX, and 0.46 g L^-1 of the amount of photocatalyst. Besides, the obtained photocatalyst can be easily used many times owing to its high reusability. SWCNT/ZnO/Fe₃O₄ photocatalyst might be recommended to be used for the mineralizing of drug compounds such as antibiotics in water. Recent Advances in Solid-Phase Extraction as a Platform for Sample Preparation in Biomarker Assay

Low levels of biomarkers and the complexity of bio sample make the analytical assay of several biomarkers a challenging issue. Suitable sample preparation run remain a vital part of the puzzle of diagnostic level. Enhancing the detection limit of bioanalytical methods start during the sample preparation procedure. A robust sample preparation method is needed to evaluate the number of biomarkers. As worldwide environmental issues attract expanding consideration, all the more harmless to the ecosystem investigations are liked. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is an appealing strategy among the sample treatment methods due to the versatility of sorbent materials, less solvent consumption, and compatibility with analytical devices. Miniaturization of the SPE gives the chance to integrate the other analytical steps in a single run, known as an easy-to-use and effective method. SPE utilizes various SPE sorbent beds such as packed beads, porous polymer monoliths, molecularly imprinted polymers, membranes, or other magnetic form microstructures to achieve high surface-to-volume ratio and appropriate chemical properties effective extraction. Also, SPE is the methodology of interest to fulfill high recovery and efficiency demands. In this review, we intend to explain more recent methods for the rational design of SPE and miniaturized SPE to determine biomarkers from biological media. The headlines are subdivided into (1) packing materials in SPE, (2) setups for sample preparation by magnetic SPE, and (3) and future perspective for the application of SPE in sample preparation for analysis of biomarkers.

Adsorptive remediation of environmental pollutants using magnetic hybrid materials as platform adsorbents

Effective separation and remediation of environmentally hazardous pollutants are burning areas of research because of a constant increase in environmental pollution problems. An extensive number of emerging contaminants in the environmental matrices result in serious health consequences in animals, humans, and plants, even at trace levels. Therefore, it is of paramount significance to quantify these undesirable pollutants, even at a very low concentration, from the natural environment. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) has recently achieved huge attention because of its strong magnetic domain and easy separation through an external magnetic field compared with simple solid-phase extraction. Therefore, MSPE appeared the most promising technique for removing and pre-concentration of emerging pollutants at trace level. Compared to the normal solid-phase extraction, MSPE as magnetic hybrid adsorbents offers the unique advantages of distinct nanomaterials and magnetic hybrid materials. It can exhibit efficient dispersion and rapid recycling when applying to a very complex matrix. This review highlights the possible environmental applications of magnetic hybrid nanoscale materials as effective MSPE sorbents to remediate a diverse range of environmentally toxic pollutants. We believe this study tends to evoke a variety of research thrust that may lead to novel remediation approaches in the forthcoming years.

Free Fatty Acid from Waste Palm Oil Functionalized Magnetic Nanoparticles Immobilized on Surface Graphene Oxide as a New Adsorbent for Simultaneously Detecting Hazardous Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Phthalate Esters in Food Extracts

A newly synthesized free fatty acids from waste palm oil functionalized magnetic nanoparticles immobilized on the surface of graphene oxide (FFA@MNP-GO) was successfully synthesized and characterized in this research. The combinations of long alkyl chain of free fatty acid with graphene oxide that consists of large delocalized 77-electron systems and abundant of hydrophilic groups with hydroxyl, epoxide and carboxylic groups offer the determination of simultaneous wide range of polarities of organic pollutants in real matrices through hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic and 77-77 interactions. The fabricated adsorbent was successfully applied as a magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent for the simultaneous separation of selected phthalate esters (PAEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in apple and cabbage extracts prior to their high performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detector (HPLC-DAD) determination. Factors affecting the extraction efficiency such as amount of adsorbent, desorption solvent, volume of desorption solvent, extraction time, desorption time, pH and sample volume were investigated and optimized. The results revealed that under optimal conditions, the detection limit of selected PAEs and PAHs were in the range of 0.56-0.97 ng mL^-1 and 0.02-0.93 ng mL^-1, respectively. The spiked recoveries of real apple and cabbage extracts for PAEs and PAHs were in the range of 81.5-117.6% with good relative standard deviation (RSD) (n = 5) less than 10% and 86.7-118.2% with acceptable RSDs (n = 5) ranging from 1.5 to 11.0%, respectively. This study reported for the first time the use of MSPE procedure for simultaneous determination of chosen PAHs and PAEs in real samples including apple and cabbage extracts by using new adsorbent, FFA@MNP-GO.

Novel nanohybrids for effervescence enhanced magnetic solid-phase microextraction of wide-polarity organic pollutants in roasted meat samples

To simultaneously and efficiently extract pollutants with differential polarities, we herein fabricated and characterized a multifunctional nanocomposite. The novel nanohybrids used NiFe₂ O₄ as magnetic cores, and NH₂ -MIL-101(Al), β-cyclodextrin and graphene oxide as functional components combined with magnetic cores. With the aid of graphene oxide's large π-conjugated system, NH₂ -MIL-101(Al)'s strong adsorption to moderately/strongly polar chemicals, and β-cyclodextrin's specific recognition effect, the nanohybrids realized synergistically efficient extraction of polyaromatic hydrocarbons and bisphenols with a log^Kow range of 3-6. Combined with acidic and alkaline sources, the nanohybrids-based effervescent tablets were prepared. Based on effervescent reaction-enhanced nanohybrids-based efficient adsorption/extraction and high performance liquid chromatography and fluorescence detection, we successfully developed an excellent microextraction method for the simultaneous determination of both polyaromatic hydrocarbons and bisphenols in roasted meat samples. Several important variables were optimized as follows: Na₂ CO₃ and tartaric acid as acidic and alkaline sources, 900 μLof the mixed solvent (acetone and hexane at 2:1 by v/v) as the eluent, 5 min of elution time. Under optimized conditions, the novel method gave low limits of detection (0.07-0.30 μg kg^-1 ), satisfactory recoveries (86.9-103.9%), and high precision (relative standard deviations of 1.9-6.7%) in roasted lamb, beef, pork, chicken, and sausage samples.

Greener Monolithic Solid Phase Extraction Biosorbent Based on Calcium Cross-Linked Starch Cryogel Composite Graphene Oxide Nanoparticles for Benzo(a)pyrene Analysis

Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) has been recognized as a marker for the detection of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In this work, a novel monolithic solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent based on graphene oxide nanoparticles (GO) in starch-based cryogel composite (GO-Cry) was successfully prepared for BaP analysis. Rice flour and tapioca starch (gel precursors) were gelatinized in limewater (cross-linker) under alkaline conditions before addition of GO (filler) that can increase the ability to extract BaP up to 2.6-fold. BaP analysis had a linear range of 10 to 1000 µgL-1 with good linearity (R2 = 0.9971) and high sensitivity (4.1 ± 0.1 a.u./(µgL-1)). The limit of detection and limit of quantification were 4.21 ± 0.06 and 14.04 ± 0.19 µgL-1, respectively, with excellent precision (0.17 to 2.45%RSD). The accuracy in terms of recovery from spiked samples was in the range of 84 to 110% with no significant difference to a C18 cartridge. GO-Cry can be reproducibly prepared with 2.8%RSD from 4 lots and can be reused at least 10 times, which not only helps reduce the analysis costs (~0.41USD per analysis), but also reduces the resultant waste to the environment.

Removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from water by magnetic activated carbon nanocomposite from green tea waste

This study aims to synthesize a magnetic activated carbon nanocomposite from green tea leaf waste (MNPs-GTAC) for evaluation of adsorption efficiency of 4 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). MNPs-GTAC contained spherically-shaped MNPs with cubic spinel structure, surface area at 118.8 m²/g, particle size at 8.6 nm and saturation magnetization at 34.2 emu/g. PAH adsorption reached a plateau at an MNPs-GTAC dose of 50 or 60 mg/L, pH of 2-4 and ionic strength of 0.1-10%, with PAH reduction in the presence of humic acid being compensated by addition of 0.1% sodium chloride. Kinetics was rapid attaining 80% removal within 5 min and the pseudo-second-order rate decreased in this order: Benzo[a]anthracene>Chrysene>Benzo[b]fluoranthene>Benzo[a]pyrene. Isotherm modeling revealed a Langmuir type-2 shape with the maximum adsorption capacity being 28.08, 22.75, 19.14 and 15.86 mg/g for Benzo[b]fluoranthene, Benzo[a]pyrene, Chrysene and Benzo[a]anthracene, respectively. Temperature study showed the PAH adsorption to be an endothermic and spontaneous process with increased randomness at solid-solution interface. Acetonitrile could completely recover the adsorbed PAH and MNPs-GTAC was successfully recycled 5 times with a minimum loss. Application to mineral water showed 86-98% and 72-89% removal for PAHs spiked respectively at 0.1 and 1 mg/L, while a complete removal was attained in tap and river waters.

Sorptive removal of methylene blue from water by magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotube composites

In the present study, five magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MMWCNTs) with different diameters were prepared and their performance on the sorptive removal of methylene blue (MB) from water was investigated. Transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometer confirm that the surface of these MMWCNTs has been decorated by Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles, which renders the MMWCNTs superparamagnetic. Thus, these MMWCNTs can be easily separated from water after the adsorption. During the adsorption process, pH slightly affected the removal efficiency of MB and the adsorption performed better under weak alkaline conditions. Adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model well, and the Dubinin-Radushkevich model fitted the isotherms best. The maximum adsorption capacity for MB reached 204.2 mg/g, and the values decreased with increasing diameters of MMWCNTs due to decreasing specific surface areas. The thermodynamics parameters indicated the spontaneous and exothermic nature of the adsorption. The reusability test showed that MMWCNTs could be used for 6 cycles without significant loss of the adsorption capacity. And common ions (K⁺, Na⁺, Ca²⁺ and Al³⁺) and SDS in water did not show greatly effects on the removal efficiency of MB. Hence, MMWCNTs prepared in this study could be promising adsorbents for dyes removal from wastewater.

Electromagnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction based on polyaniline-coated magnetite/silica materials for the determination of Sudan red I in drinks

By replacing the permanent magnet with an electromagnet, traditional magnetic solid-phase extraction was developed into electromagnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction. A simple operation of power on and off can realize the separation of adsorbents from solutions easily. The improvement makes it possible for the automation of the determination of Sudan Red I by high-performance liquid chromatography. After series of optimization, a trace amount of Sudan red I was well-determined, and excellent linearity was achieved in the range of 0.005 to 1 mg/L with the correlation coefficient (R² ) = 0.997. The limit of detection with a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 was found to be 0.001 mg/L. The spiked recoveries of Sudan red I for the samples ranged from 93.6 to 104.9%. Moreover, the adsorbent could be recycled at least ten times. The results show that the electromagnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction combined with high-performance liquid chromatography is a rapid, eco-friendly, effective, and sensitive determination method with fascinating automation potential and high practical applicability.

Magnetic covalent organic framework nanocomposites as a new adsorbent for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water and food samples

A magnetic covalent organic framework nanocomposite (Fe₃O₄@COF(Tp-NDA)) was synthesized via a solvothermal method, used as a magnetic adsorbent for the extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from lake water, tea, coffee, and fried chicken, and detected using a high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detector. The synthesized magnetic adsorbent was characterized via transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherm analysis and vibrating sample magnetometry. Parameters that affected the extraction conditions and desorption conditions were optimized. Adsorption equilibrium could be attained within 3 min. The prepared magnetic material could be reused 10 times. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.05-0.25 μg L^-1 and 0.17-0.83 μg L^-1, respectively. The recovery was 74.6-101.8% with a relative standard deviation of below 4.2%. The method was successfully used to detect PAHs in various samples.

Solvent-free mechanochemical preparation of graphene oxide-Fe3 O4 and its application in magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction of illegal dyes in food samples

A simple, green, and efficient mechanochemical approach was developed herein to prepare tunable magnetic graphene oxide nanoparticles. The obtained nanoparticles were successfully used as adsorbents in a magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction method to extract three cationic dyes (i.e., thioflavine T, auramine-O, and basic orange 2) found in food samples. Our proposed approach also utilized high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. Several key variables affecting the extraction recovery were investigated. These included the sample pH, amount of extractant, extraction time, sample volume, elution solvent type and volume, and the stability and reusability of the magnetic graphene oxide nanoparticles. Under optimized conditions, the calibration curve was linear at a concentration range of 0.005-1.0 μg/mL with a correlation coefficient of 0.9992-0.9996. Moreover, the limits of detection were determined at 0.97-1.35 μg/mL. The extraction mechanism was investigated via ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry and zeta-potential analyses. The developed method was used to analyze the above-mentioned cationic dyes in bean products and yellow fish samples. Notably, satisfactory spiked recoveries ranging from 90.7 to 104.9% were achieved.

Sensitive determination of Fluoxetine and Citalopram antidepressants in urine and wastewater samples by liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array detector

A new analyte separation and preconcentration method for the trace determination of antidepressant drugs, Fluoxetine (FLU) and Citalopram (CIT) in urine and wastewaters, was developed based on HPLC-DAD analysis after magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE). In the proposed method, FLU and CIT were retained on the newly synthetized magnetic sorbent (Fe₃O₄@PPy-GO) in the presence of buffer (pH 10.0) and then were desorbed into a lower volume of acetonitrile prior to the chromatographic determinations. Before HPLC analysis, all samples were filtered through a 0.45 µm PTFE filter. Experimental parameters such as interaction time, desorption solvent and volume, and pH were studied and optimized in order to establish the detection limit, linearity, enrichment factor and other analytical figures of merit under optimum operation conditions. In the developed method, FLU and CIT were analyzed by diode array detector at the corresponding maximum wavelengths of 227 and 238 nm, respectively, by using an isocratic elution of 60% pH 3.0 buffer, 30% acetonitrile, and 10% methanol. By using the optimum conditions, limit of detections for FLU and CIT were 1.58 and 1.43 ng mL^-1, respectively, while the limit of quantifications was 4.82 and 4.71 ng mL^-1, respectively. Relative standard deviations (RSD%) for triplicate analyses of model solutions containing 100 ng mL^-1 target molecules were found to be less than 5.0 %. Finally, the method was successfully applied to urine (both simulated and real healthy human) and wastewater samples, and quantitative results were obtained in recovery experiments.

Ultrasound-assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from water samples with a magnetic polyaniline modified graphene oxide nanocomposite

A novel magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite modified with polyaniline (Fe₃O₄@GO-PANI) was synthesized and applied for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (i.e. fluorene, phenanthrene and pyrene) and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (N-PAHs) (i.e. 2-nitrofluorene, 9-nitroanthracene, 1-nitropyrene and 3-nitrofluoranthene) prior to their determination by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The prepared nanomaterial was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy. The main experimental parameters affecting the extraction and desorption steps of the MSPE procedure were investigated and optimized. Under optimum conditions, coefficients of determination (r²) ranged between 0.9970 and 0.9995, limits of detection (LODs, S/N = 3) ranged between 0.04-0.05 ng mL^-1 for PAHs and 0.01-0.11 ng mL^-1 for N-PAHs, while the relative standard deviation for intra-day and inter-day repeatability were lower than 10.0% for PAHs and N-PAHs. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of tap, mineral and river water samples. Relative recoveries in spiked water samples ranged between from 91.6 to 114% and from 92.3 to 110% for PAHs and N-PAHs, respectively. The proposed method is simple, rapid, sensitive and the Fe₃O₄@GO-PANI sorbent can be reused for at least 15 times without significant decrease in extraction recovery.

Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction of Drugs and Pesticides from Human Plasma Using COOH-mMWCNTs

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are useful for extracting chemical compounds due to their properties, such as surface area and the potential for chemical modification. Especially the formation of CNTs with carboxylic acid functional group makes them disperse in water-based samples and have strong interaction forces with cationizable analytes. Based on these features, carboxylic acid functionalized multi-walled CNTs (COOH-MWCNTs) have been used as extraction sorbents. CNT can also be gathered using an external magnet by forming complex with iron oxide (Fe3O4) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). In this study, COOH-MWCNTs with MNPs were subjected to magnetic solid-phase extraction (mSPE) in order to extract the targeted substances such as diphenhydramine, doxylamine, tramadol, escitalopram, zolpidem, diphenamid, paclobutrazol, hexaconazole, cyproconazole and mepronil from human plasma samples. The following five factors were optimized: (i) the ratio of COOH-MWCNTs to MNPs as a sorbent from 1:1 to 1:4; (ii) sorbent amount starting from 12.5 to 75%; (iii) sample pH tested pH 2 to pH 10 with 1 N hydrochloride and 1 N sodium hydroxide; (iv) agitating time from 0 to 4 min and (v) elution solvent. Limit of detection of 10 targeted substances in human plasma were in the range of 0.1-0.4 mg/L. The recovery of targeted substances (except diphenamid) in human plasma was 73.06-110.28% for intra-day and 83.00-107.70% for inter-day and the precision (relative standard deviation, %) in human plasma was 0.3-13.3% for intra-day and 2.9-15.6% for inter-day. The method was applied to nine authentic biological samples from overdose patients in the emergency room of Chungnam National University Hospital. The performance of mSPE was compared with the liquid-liquid extraction method using ethyl acetate. The results showed that the newly developed method in this study can be used for screening analysis in forensic and clinical toxicology.

Magnetic solid phase extraction of heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from environmental water samples with multiwalled carbon nanotube modified magnetic polyamido-amine dendrimers prior to gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometer

Present study described a sensitive and efficient method for determination of heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using multiwalled carbon nanotubes modified magnetic polyamido-amine dendrimers (MNPs@PAMAM-Gn@MWCNTs) as adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) coupled with gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC-MS/MS). Some pivotal parameters including PAMAM generation, adsorbent dosage, adsorption time, elution time and volume, pH and humic acid concentration were investigated to achieve the best adsorption efficiencies. Under the optimal conditions, 7-methylquinoline, dibenzothiophene and carbazole had good linearity in the concentration range of 0.005-20 μg L ^- 1, 9-methylcarbazole, 4-methyldibenzothiophene and 4,6-dimethyl dibenzothiophene had good linearity in the concentration range of 0.001-20 μg L ^- 1. All the correlation coefficients were higher than 0.996. The detection limits of the targets were in the range of 2.2 × 10^-4-1.8 × 10^-3 μg L ^- 1 with precisions less than 8.28% (n = 6). The enrichment factors were in the range of 141-147. The spiked recoveries were in the range of 87.0%-115.1% (n = 3). These results indicated that the method could be a reliable alternative tool for monitoring trace heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in environmental water samples.

Magnetic solid-phase extraction of caffeine from surface water samples with a micro–meso porous activated carbon/Fe3O4 nanocomposite prior to its determination by GC-MS

A novel micro–meso porous activated carbon/Fe₃O₄ (Bm) composite was synthesized from the active charcoal precursor BAX-1500 and used in the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of caffeine prior to its determination by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The main factors affecting the extraction and desorption steps of the MSPE procedure were investigated and optimized. These factors include extraction time, sorbent mass and salt addition for the adsorption step and type of eluent, desorption time and volume of desorption solution for the desorption step. Under optimum conditions, the absolute extraction recovery was found to be 91.1% and good linearity was observed in the investigated concentration range of 0.6–12.5 ng mL⁻¹ (R² = 0.9997). The limit of detection was 0.18 ng mL⁻¹ and the limit of quantification was 0.60 ng mL⁻¹. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of surface water samples. The proposed MSPE method is simple, rapid, sensitive and environmentally friendly.

A novel magnetic solid phase material based on a micro–meso porous activated carbon/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposite was used to extract caffeine from surface water samples. The method is efficient and rapid, and has minimum solvent consumption.
