Abstract
Heavy metals in particulate matter (PM) are of great concern, and their effects on the environment and human health depend on their solubilities and species present. In this study, the solubility of As, Se, Sb, V and Cr and their species eluted in water was investigated. As, Se, Sb, and V were present mostly in fine particles, and they were predominantly water-soluble in fine particles (<2.5 μm, PM2.5) but insoluble in coarse particles (>2.5 μm). Solubility of Cr was poor even in fine particles. It was found that for fine particles, solubilities of the heavy metals were related to the nitrate and sulfate contents. This suggests that the higher the acidity of the particles, the higher the solubility of the heavy metals. Oxoanions of the five kinds of heavy metals in water extracts of fine particles were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry preceded by ion chromatography. The results suggested the presence of atmospheric oxidation during the aerosol transportation. Also, the As(iii)/As(v) (arsenite/arsenate) ratios for the fine particle extracts were related to the transition metal concentrations, which indicated that Fe, Cu, etc. in fine particles affected the As redox equilibrium. It was suggested that the heavy metals exist as complexes with iron hydroxide and dissolved organic matter in addition to the free oxoanions. These investigations were performed for PM samples collected in winter and summer in Kumamoto, west Japan, where the site is strongly exposed to westerly winds from continental East Asia. The obtained results improve our understanding of the behavior of the heavy metals in airborne PM after depositing on a wet environment and biota.

Abstract
In this study, we developed and compared three different methods for chromium speciation in water samples using microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs). In all methods, detection was based on the complexation reaction of Cr(VI) with diphenylcarbazide on the μPADs. Cr(III) ions were oxidized to Cr(VI) by Ce(IV) prior to colorimetric detection on the μPADs. In the first method, oxidization of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) in the solution containing both trivalent and hexavalent chromium was performed using a batch procedure to obtain total chromium. A dual electromembrane extraction (DEME) technique for simultaneous preconcentration and extraction of chromium species and a single electromembrane extraction (SEME) for preconcentration and extraction of Cr(VI)/total chromium [quantified as Cr(VI) content after oxidation of Cr(III) ions to Cr(VI)] were used in the second and third methods, respectively. The electromembrane extraction was based on the electrokinetic migration of cationic Cr(III) and anionic Cr(VI) toward the cathode and anode, respectively, into the two different hollow fibres. Octanol-1 and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (DEHP) in octanol-1 (0.7% v/v) were the most suitable supported liquid membranes for extraction of Cr(VI) and Cr(III), respectively. Among these methods, SEME showed the lowest limits of detection for both analytes. Under optimized conditions, linear calibrations were obtained for Cr(III) from 3 to 30 μg L-1 and for Cr(VI) from 3 to 70 μg L-1. The detection limits were 1.0 μg L-1 and 0.7 μg L-1 for Cr(III) and Cr(VI), respectively. Our developed method was applied to analyse water samples spiked with different concentrations of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) at the parts-per-billion (ppb) level. The statistical evaluation showed that the proposed method agreed well with the validation method, i.e., inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES).

Abstract
The aim of this work is the development, optimization, and validation of a new spectrophotometric kinetic method for the determination of dissolved chromium species in water samples with the use of the polymethine dye Astra Phloxine FF. The progress of the chemical reaction was simple, effective, and precisely monitored from the start of the reaction using an optical probe. The method is based on the impact of Cr(VI) concentration on the rate of decrease in the Astra Phloxine FF concentration. The experimental data were evaluated using four experimental data analysis methods, namely with the initial rate method, the average rate method, the fixed time method, and the absorption peak volume change method. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the best results were achieved using the method of the average rate constant for evaluating the experimental data. Using this data evaluation method for the determination of Cr(VI), the LoD was found to be 1.87 µg L-1 and RSD ( n = 6; 0.2 mg L-1 Cr) 3.59%. The presented work was used for the determination of chromium in model samples-CRM material and tap and waste water-and with the calibration line method and the standard additions method.

Abstract
Quantitative determination of the candidate drug molecule and its metabolites in biofluids and tissues is an inevitable step in the development of new pharmaceuticals. Because of the time-consuming and expensive nature of the current standard technique for quantitative metabolite profiling, i.e., radiolabeling followed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with radiodetection, the development of alternative methodologies is of great interest. In this work, a simple, fast, sensitive, and accurate method for the quantitative metabolite profiling of an amino group containing drug (levothyroxine) and its metabolites in human plasma, based on precolumn derivatization followed by HPLC-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS), was developed and validated. To introduce a suitable "heteroelement" (defined here as an element that is detectable with ICPMS), an inexpensive and commercially available reagent, tetrabromophthalic anhydride (TBPA) was used for the derivatization of free NH2-groups. The presence of a known number of I atoms in both the drug molecule and its metabolites enabled a cross-validation of the newly developed derivatization procedure and quantification based on monitoring of the introduced Br. The formation of the derivatives was quantitative, providing a 4:1 stoichiometric Br/NH2 ratio. The derivatives were separated via reversed-phase HPLC with gradient elution. Bromine was determined via ICPMS at a mass-to-charge ratio of 79 using H2 as a reaction gas to ensure interference-free detection, and iodine was determined at a mass-to-charge ratio of 127 for cross-validation purposes. The method developed shows a fit-for-purpose accuracy (recovery between 85% and 115%) and precision (repeatability <15% RSD). The limit of quantification (LoQ) for Br was approximately 100 μg/L.

Abstract
A new procedure for the determination of chromium species in polluted environmental samples by flame atomic absorption spectrometry was developed in this work. A new material containing 1,5-diphenylcarbazone included in a polymeric matrix was prepared and employed as a solid-phase extraction material for selective separation of Cr(III) ions under dynamic conditions. Chromium(III) ions were retained on this sorbent with high efficiency and repeatability (95 %, RSD = 1 %) from solutions with pH 9.0. The quantitative recovery of analyte was obtained with 0.1 mol L-1 EDTA. The concentration of Cr(VI) ions was calculated from the difference between the concentration of total chromium and Cr(III) ions. The prepared sorbent exhibits good chemical and mechanical stability, sorption capacity and selectivity towards Cr(III) ions in the presence of Cu(II), Ni(II), Mn(II) and Ca(II) ions. The accuracy of the separation method was proved by analysis of reference material of wastewater RES 10.2. The developed procedure was applied for chromium speciation analysis in municipal sewage samples.

Abstract
Speciation analysis of inorganic chromium in wastewater is of great significance for the monitoring of environmental pollution. In this work, N,N-bis(2-aminoethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine functionalized poly(chloromethyl styrene-co-styrene) was synthesized, characterized and used as the adsorbent to preconcentrate chromium species in environmental waters by on line solid-phase extraction (SPE). The trace speciation analysis of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in wastewater has been used by short-column high-performance liquid chromatography hyphenated to inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) after on-line SPE. Cr(III) and Cr(VI) have been adsorbed on the anion exchange column after transforming the cationic Cr(III) to an anionic [Cr(III)-EDTA](-) complex devoid of re-dox reagent, and then eluted rapidly (within seconds) with a very low concentration of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH) solution. This method provides a reliable on-line preconcentration method and detection coupled technique. Under the optimized conditions, high enrichment factors have been obtained for Cr(VI) and [Cr(III)-EDTA](-) with 30mL sample solution up to 105 and 128, respectively. The low detection limits of 0.0068ng mL(-1) and 0.0041ng mL(-1), with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 4.3% and 3.6% were obtained for Cr(VI) and [Cr(III)-EDTA](-), respectively. The developed method was validated by analyzing Certified Reference Materials GSBZ50027-94, and the spike tests were also performed. At the same time, thanks to the merit of simple operation, rapid adsorption/desorption dynamics, high enrichment and low LODs, the established method was applied to analyze three wastewater samples from different discharge port.
