Abstract
Phthalate acid esters (PAEs) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants present in food samples, necessitating accurate detection for risk assessment and remediation efforts. This review provides an updated overview of the recent progress on the PAEs analysis regarding sample pretreatment techniques and analytical methodologies over the latest decade. Advances in sample preparation include solid-based extraction techniques replacing conventional liquid-liquid extraction, with solid sorbents emerging as promising alternatives due to their minimal solvent consumption and enhanced selectivity. Although techniques like the microextraction methods offer versatility and reduced solvent reliance, there is a need for more efficient and environmentally friendly techniques enabling on-site portable detection. High-resolution mass spectrometry is increasingly utilized for its enhanced sensitivity and reduced contamination risks. However, challenges persist in developing in situ analytical techniques for trace PAEs in complex food samples. Future research should prioritize novel analytical techniques with superior sensitivity and selectivity, addressing current limitations to meet the demand for precise PAEs detection in diverse food matrices.

Abstract
Owing to the high lipophilicity of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), they easily accumulate in dairy products. Although usually present at very low levels, they pose a serious threat to human health. Therefore, developing a sensitive and reliable method for detecting PCB in dairy products is crucial. Herein, Herein, a metal-organic framework (MOF) material named with bimetallic nodes and double ligands was prepared as a precursor using a one-pot hydrothermal method. Defective porous urchin-like ZnO/NiO, derived from these MOF-based precursors (ZnNi-MOF-NH2) as a sacrificial template, was synthesized via pyrolysis to remove heat-sensitive ligands. To the best of our knowledge, this urchin-like nanostructured ZnO/NiO hybrid was utilized as a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating for the first time. Headspace SPME (HS-SPME) was developed for non-contact extraction of PCB in milk prior to gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) analysis. Under optimal conditions, the HS-SPME-GC-MS/MS method exhibited a wide linear range (0.01-1000 ng·L-1), low limits of detection (0.003-0.025 ng·L-1), and high enrichment factors (5714-9906). Additionally, the performance of the ZnO/NiO SPME fiber coating showed no noticeable decrease after 175 uses. The method was applied to trace PCB analysis in milk samples, yielding recoveries of 70.3-114.1 %. The ZnO/NiO derived from MOF-based material provides a promising candidate for SPME coatings to extract PCB and other analogs.

Abstract
In this study, polymeric ionic liquids featuring different functional moieties were applied as sorbent coatings in direct-immersion solid-phase microextraction (DI-SPME) for the extraction of 2-methylimidazole (2-MI) and 4-methylimidazole (4-MI) from açaí-based food products followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The analytical method was optimized using a sequential experimental design. Variables used in GC-MS such as desorption time, as well as for SPME-DI, including extraction time, extraction temperature, incubation time of extraction, amount of NaCl in the extract, and stirring rate, were optimized. The fitness-for-purpose of the method was verified by the linearity of matrix-matched calibration curves (R2 ≥ 0.9921), adequate recoveries (81.7-89.7 %), and precision (relative standard deviations ≤11.2 %). The method was applied to twenty-five samples of açaí-based food products. 4-MI was found in four samples whereas 2-MI was not detected above the limit of detection. The method was found to be suitable for quality control analysis.

J Chromatogr A 2023; 1706:464222. [PMID: 37523907 DOI: 10.1016/j.chroma.2023.464222] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/17/2023] [Revised: 07/04/2023] [Accepted: 07/18/2023] [Indexed: 08/02/2023]
Abstract
To understand factors that drive pesticide-cannabinoid selectivity in solid-phase microextraction (SPME), eight new polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) sorbent coatings were designed and compared to four previously reported PIL sorbent coatings for the extraction of pesticides. The four PIL sorbent coatings consisted of either vinylimidazolium or vinylbenzylimidazolium ILs with long alkyl chain substituents (i.e., -C8H17 or -C12H25) and bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ([NTf2-]) anions, from which the eight new PIL sorbent coatings were adapted. Modifications to the chemical structure of IL monomers and crosslinkers included incorporation of polymerizable p-styrenesulfonate or 3-sulfopropyl acrylate anions, the addition of aromatic moieties, and/or the addition of polar functional groups (i.e., -OH or -O- groups). A total of ten commonly regulated pesticides and six cannabinoids were examined in this study. The effect of salt on the solubility of pesticides and cannabinoids in aqueous solutions was assessed by determining their extraction efficiencies in the presence of varied methanol content. Differences in their solubilities appear to play a dominant role in enhancing pesticide-cannabinoid selectivity. The selectivity, represented as the ratio of pesticide total peak areas to cannabinoid total peak areas, also exhibited a moderate correlation to the affinity of the sorbent coatings towards both the pesticides and the cannabinoids. A positive correlation was observed for the pesticides and a negative correlation was observed for the cannabinoids, suggesting that selectivity was driven by more than the presence of salt in the samples. The sorbent coatings' affinity towards each class of analytes were examined to determine specific interactions that might influence selectivity. The two main structural modifications increasing pesticide-cannabinoid selectivity included the absence of aromatic moieties and the addition of hydrogen bond donor functional groups. Extractions of simple aromatic molecules as probes were performed under similar extraction conditions as the cannabinoids and confirmed the influence of hydrogen bonding interactions on sorbent coating affinity.

Abstract
A porous aromatic framework (PAF-47) synthesized through Suzuki coupling reaction was introduced to prepare PAF-47/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coated stir bar by sol-gel technique. PAF-47/PDMS coating provided high extraction recovery (77.6-90.6%, the ratio of actual enrichment factor (EF) to theoretical EF) for five polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in a relatively short time (60 min), exhibiting a faster extraction kinetics over commercial PDMS coating (12/24 h). Based on this, a new method based on PAF-47/PDMS coated stir bar sorptive extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection was proposed for trace analysis of target PCBs in environmental water. Under the optimized conditions, the limits of detection for five PCBs were within 44-70 ng/L, with actual EF of 64.0-71.5-fold (maximal EF of 83.3-fold). This method was successfully used to detect trace PCBs in Yangtze River water and East Lake water, with recoveries of 81.0-113% and 86.1-111%, respectively.

Abstract
The high abundance of cannabinoids within cannabis samples presents an issue for pesticide testing as cannabinoids are often co-extracted with pesticides using various sample preparation techniques. Cannabinoids may also chromatographically co-elute with moderate polarity pesticides and inhibit the ionization of pesticides when using mass spectrometry. To circumvent these issues, we have developed a new approach to isolate commonly regulated pesticides and cannabinoids from aqueous samples using tunable, crosslinked imidazolium polymeric ionic liquid (PIL)-based sorbent coatings for direct immersion solid-phase microextraction (DI-SPME). The selectivity of four PIL sorbent coatings towards 20 pesticides and six cannabinoids, including cannabidiol and Δ9-THC, was investigated and compared against a commercial PDMS/DVB fiber. Extraction and desorption conditions, including salt content, extraction temperature, pH, extraction time, desorption solvent, and desorption time, were optimized using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet (UV) detection. Under optimized conditions, the PIL fiber consisting of 1-vinylbenzyl-3-octylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ([VBIMC8+][NTf2-]) and 1,12-di(3-vinylbenzylimidazolium)dodecane dibis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ([(VBIM)2C122+]2[NTf2-]) sorbent coating provided the best selectivity towards pesticides compared to other PILs and the PDMS/DVB fibers and was able to reach limits of detection (LODs) as low as 1 µg/L. When compared to a previously reported PIL-based SPME HPLC-UV method for pesticide analysis, the amount of cannabinoids extracted from the sample was decreased 9-fold while a 4-fold enhancement in the extraction of pesticides was achieved. Additionally, the PIL-based SPME method was applied to samples containing environmentally-relevant concentrations of pesticides and cannabinoids to assess its feasibility for Cannabis quality control testing. Relative recoveries between 95% and 141% were obtained using the PIL sorbent coating while recoveries ranging from 50% to 114% were obtained using the PDMS/DVB fiber.

Abstract
Developing effective and green methods for food analysis and separation has become an urgent issue regarding the ever-increasing concern of food quality and safety. Ionic liquids (ILs) are a new chemical medium and soft functional material developed under the framework of green chemistry and possess many unique properties, such as low melting points, low-to-negligible vapor pressures, excellent solubility, structural designability and high thermal stability. Combining ILs with extraction techniques not only takes advantage of ILs but also overcomes the disadvantages of traditional extraction methods. This subject has attracted intensive research efforts recently. Here, we present a brief review of the current research status and latest developments regarding the application of IL-assisted microextraction, including dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) and solid-phase microextraction (SPME), in food analysis and separation. The practical applications of ILs in determining toxic and harmful substances in food specimens with quite different natures are summarized and discussed. The critical function of ILs and the advantages of IL-based microextraction techniques over conventional extraction techniques are discussed in detail. Additionally, the recovery of ILs using different approaches is also presented to comply with green analytical chemistry requirements.

Abstract
The functionalization of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) identifies significant potential for developing selective coating materials for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). Herein, a chlorine-functionalized covalent organic framework (CF-COF) was in-situ synthesized by employing triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and 2,5-dichloro-1,4-phenylenediamine (2,5-DCA) as monomers on an amino-functionalized stainless steel wire. The obtained CF-COF coated fiber exhibited a higher enrichment capacity for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) than commercial fibers and non-chlorinated COF fiber, owing to a more hydrophobic surface, size-matching effect, a large number of micropores and the π-π stacking interactions between COF coating and analytes. As a practical application, the CF-COF coated fiber was applied to the headspace extraction of 17 PCBs prior to their quantification by GC/MS. The established analytical method offered a good linearity in the range of 0.1-1000 ng L-1, low detection limits of 0.0015-0.0088 ng L-1, and satisfactory enhancement factors (EFs) of 699-4281. The repeatability for single fiber and the fiber-to-fiber reproducibility was lower than 9.26% and 9.33%, respectively. The proposed method was verified to be sensitive, selective, and applicable for the analysis of ultra-trace PCBs in environmental surface water samples with the recoveries ranged from 78.7% to 124.0%.

Abstract
A fully automated online emulsification-enhanced disposable pipette extraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (EE-DPX-GC-MS) method has been developed for the extraction of six polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from environmental waters. An in-house prepared material, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), was used as sorbent in a home-packed DPX device. The six PCBs studied include PCB 10, 28, 52, 153, 138 and 180. g-C3N4 was characterized successfully by X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy. As a C-N analogue of graphite, the two-dimensional structure of g-C3N4 allows rapid analyte adsorption and desorption to take place. With a significant number of nitrogen functionalities in g-C3N4, the material dispersed well in aqueous sample, increasing the active surface area of contact between the sorbent and the sample. When coupled with a pre-emulsification step, PCBs in each portion of sample could be efficiently extracted by g-C3N4 within 20 s of gentle turbulence. Under the most favorable conditions, the automated online EE-DPX-GC-MS method achieved wide dynamic working ranges with good linearity (r2 ≥ 0.998) for all analytes. Limits of detection ranging between 4.35 and 7.82 ng L-1 were attained, with enrichment factors of between 34 and 57 and relative standard deviations (RSDs) for intra- and inter-day precision of ≤ 8.95% and ≤ 12.6%, respectively. Absolute recoveries were between 69.3% and 109%. The fully automated online EE-DPX-GC-MS approach was applied to industrial wastewaters and reservoir waters where good relative recoveries of PCBs of between 89.3% and 105% were obtained, with RSDs ≤ 11.6%.

Abstract
The present review aims to describe the recent and most impactful applications in pollutant analysis using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) technology in environmental, food, and bio-clinical analysis. The covered papers were published in the last 5 years (2014–2019) thus providing the reader with information about the current state-of-the-art and the future potential directions of the research in pollutant monitoring using SPME. To this end, we revised the studies focused on the investigation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), pesticides, and emerging pollutants (EPs) including personal care products (PPCPs), in different environmental, food, and bio-clinical matrices. We especially emphasized the role that SPME is having in contaminant surveys following the path that goes from the environment to humans passing through the food web. Besides, this review covers the last technological developments encompassing the use of novel extraction coatings (e.g., metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, PDMS-overcoated fiber), geometries (e.g., Arrow-SPME, multiple monolithic fiber-SPME), approaches (e.g., vacuum and cold fiber SPME), and on-site devices. The applications of SPME hyphenated with ambient mass spectrometry have also been described.

Abstract
Graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4) is a carbon-based metal-free semiconductor, which has been widely explored as a photoactive material. In this work, the CdS, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and C3N4 (CdS-rGO-C3N4) composite was synthesized by a simple one-pot hydrothermal method and utilized to construct a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor. Compared with CdS, C3N4 and CdS-C3N4, the CdS-rGO-C3N4 composite exhibited enhanced photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance, due to the expanded absorption of C3N4 in the visible region by CdS and promoted the charge carrier separation of a photoelectrode by rGO. Based on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with CdS-rGO-C3N4 and a PCB72-binding aptamer (ap/CdS-rGO-C3N4/GCE), a PEC aptasensor for the detection of 2,3',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB72) was developed. When H2O2 was added into the electrolyte, the PEC sensor exhibited an amplified response toward PCB72, and could be operated in a self-powered mode at a potential of 0 V. Under optimum conditions, the constructed PEC aptasensor exhibited a wide linear range of 10 to 1000 ng mL-1 for PCB72 detection, with a low detection limit (S/N = 3) of 1.0 ng mL-1. Moreover, this aptasensor exhibited high selectivity, good reproducibility and high stability. The applicability of the developed PEC strategy was demonstrated by determining PCB72 in environmental water.

Abstract
In this work, a procedure using solid phase microextraction in combination with capillary electrophoresis was developed for the determination of oxytetracycline in milk samples. The method involves the synthesis of poly(1-allyl-3-methyl imidazolium) chloride film on a stainless-steel bar via electropolymerization and its use as an adsorbent for oxytetracycline (OT) by an ionic exchange mechanism. The coated fiber is then immersed in milk samples for retention of oxytetracycline residues, followed by elution, drying, and reconstitution before analysis with capillary electrophoresis. The proposed method achieves a limit of detection of 70 µg L⁻¹ with adequate precision and uncertainty, making this methodology appropriate for the determination of OT in milk samples. The method was applied to the pre-concentration and quantification of oxytetracycline in ten commercial milk samples. Two tested samples were positive for the presence of oxytetracycline but the concentration was below the maximum residue limit according to the international normative standard. The proposed methodology was evaluated according to the Eco-Scale approach, and the total score of 51 indicated that the methodology proposed is both green and acceptable despite the multi-stage character. SPME-CE methodology allows us to perform the sample pre-treatment and determination of OT in an effective and greener way, decreasing the number of steps during the analysis and the generation of waste.

Abstract
ZnO nanoflakes (ZnONFs) were electrochemically grown on a nickel-titanium alloy (NiTi) wire for use in solid-phase microextraction. Prior to the growth of ZnONFs, the NiTi wire was hydrothermally treated for in-situ growth of TiO2/NiO nanoflakes as a seeding base. The applied potential was used to control the dimensions of vertically oriented hexagonal ZnONFs. After annealing at 600 °C, the resulting fiber display fairly selective affinity for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The fibers were applied to the preconcentration of PCBs which then were quantified by HPLC with UV detection. Compared to commercial polydimethylsiloxane coatings, the new coating displays high extraction capability, rapid extraction kinetics and superior cycling stability. This is assumed to be due to its high surface-to-volume ratio, double-sided open access structure, and enhanced structural stability. The assay excels by (a) a wide analytical range (0.10 to 200 μg L-1 of PCBs), (b) low limits of detection (20-17 ng L-1), and (c) low standard deviations for the single fiber repeatability (<9.8%) and for the fiber-to-fiber reproducibility (<7.5%). Satisfactory accuracy and precision were achieved when PCBs were determined by this method in spiked rain water, river water and wastewater samples. Graphical abstract ZnO nanoflakes were fabricated on a superelastic nickel-titanium alloy wire in desired orientation with enhanced extraction capability and good extraction selectivity. The fabricated fiber was suitable for the determination of PCBs in environmental water samples.

Upconversion Fluorescent Aptasensor for Polychlorinated Biphenyls Detection Based on Nicking Endonuclease and Hybridization Chain Reaction Dual-Amplification Strategy. Anal Chem 2018; 90:9936-9942. Abstract
A novel upconversion fluorescent aptasensor based on hybridization chain reaction and nicking endonuclease has been developed for detection of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). It combined the dual advantages of UCNPs and HCR. Two harpins (H1 and H2) were first designed according to the partial complementary sequence (cDNA) of the PCB72/106. Since the aptamer specifically recognized the target, the cDNA was detached from the magnetic microspheres (MMPs). The cDNA could initiate hybridization chain reaction (HCR) and open the stems of H1 and H2. After the addition of nicking endonuclease, UCNPs were further away from the quenchers (BHQ-1). Hence, the fluorescence intensity of upconversion nanoparticals (UCNPs) could be restored via fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). Therefore, the fluorescence of UCNPs was directly proportional to concentration of PCB72/106, which was the basis for the quantification of PCB72/106. PCB72/106 could be analyzed within the ranges of 0.004 to 800 ng/mL with a detection limit of 0.0035 ng/mL ( S/ N = 3). The aptasensor was also used for the detection of water and soil samples, and the average recoveries ranged from 93.4% to 109.7% and 83.2% to 118.5%, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) were all below 3.2%. The signal was first amplified through HCR and further amplified with the help of nicking endonuclease. This work also provided the opportunity to develop fluorescent aptasensors for other targets using this dual-amplification strategy.

Abstract
Crosslinked pyrrolidinium-based poly(ionic liquids) (Pyrr-PILs) were synthesized through a fast, simple, and solventless photopolymerization scheme, and tested as solid phase microextraction (SPME) sorbents. A series of Pyrr-PILs bearing three different alkyl side chain lengths with two, eight, and fourteen carbons was prepared, characterized, and homogeneously coated on a steel wire by using a very simple procedure. The resulting coatings showed a high thermal stability, with decomposition temperatures above 350 °C, excellent film stability, and lifetime of over 100 injections. The performance of these PIL-based SPME fibers was evaluated using a mixture of eleven organic compounds with different molar volumes and chemical functionalities (alcohols, ketones, and monoterpenes). The Pyrr-PIL fibers were obtained as dense film coatings, with 67 μm thickness, with an overall sorption increase of 90% and 55% as compared to commercial fibers of Polyacrylate (85 μm) (PA85) and Polydimethylsiloxane (7 μm) (PDMS7) coatings, respectively. A urine sample doped with the sample mixture was used to study the matrix effect and establish relative recoveries, which ranged from 60.2% to 104.1%.

Abstract
A benzyl-functionalized crosslinked polymeric ionic liquid (PIL), produced through the co-polymerization of the 1-vinylbenzyl-3-hexadecylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide (VBHDIM-NTf2) ionic liquid (IL) monomer and 1,12-di(3-vinylbenzylimidazolium)dodecane bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ((DVBIM)2C12-2NTf2) IL crosslinker, was successfully used as a sorbent coating in headspace solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled to gas chromatography (GC) with flame-ionization detection (FID) to determine seven volatile polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environmental water samples. Optimum extraction conditions for the PAHs when using the novel sorbent include an extraction temperature of 50°C, an ionic strength content adjusted with 30% (w/v) NaCl in the aqueous sample, and an extraction time of 60 min. The extraction performance of the crosslinked PIL fiber was compared to the SPME commercial coating polydimethylsiloxane fiber. The calibration ranges of the studied PAHs were linear in the range of 0.02-20 µg L-1 for the crosslinked PIL fiber. The accuracy of the proposed method was demonstrated by examining the spiked recoveries of seven PAHs which produced values ranging from 67.2% to 130% (for river- and seawater samples), and precision values lower than 9.4% for a spiked level of 1 µg L-1, and detection limits between 0.01 and 0.04 µg L-1, which supports the sensitivity of the method using GC-FID.

Selective dispersive solid phase extraction-chromatography tandem mass spectrometry based on aptamer-functionalized UiO-66-NH2 for determination of polychlorinated biphenyls. Abstract
In this paper, a novel dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE) adsorbent based on aptamer-functionalized magnetic metal-organic framework material was developed for selective enrichment of the trace polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from soil sample. Firstly, we developed a simple, versatile synthetic strategy to prepare highly reproducible magnetic amino-functionalized UiO-66 (Fe3O4@PDA@UiO-66-NH2) by using polydopamine (PDA) as covalent linker. Then amino-functionalized aptamers which can recognize 2,3',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB72), 2',3',4',5,5'-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB106) were covalent immobilized on UiO-66-NH2 through coupling reagent of glutaraldehyde. Aptamer-functionalized adsorbent (Fe3O4@PDA@UiO-66-Apt) can specifically capture PCBs from complex matrix with high adsorption capacity based on the specific affinity of aptamer towards target. Moreover, the adsorbent can be easily isolated from the solution through magnetic separation after extraction. Afterwards, the detection was carried out with gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The selective dSPE pretreatment coupled with GC-MS possessed high selectivity, good binding capacity, stability, repeatability and reproducibility for the extraction of PCBs. Furthermore, the adsorbent possessed good mechanical stability which can be applied in replicate at least for 60 extraction cycles with recovery over 80%. It provided a linear range of 0.02-400ngmL(-1) with a good correlation coefficient (R(2)=0.9994-0.9996), and the limit of detection was found to be 0.010-0.015ngmL(-1). The method was successfully utilized for the determination of PCBs in soil samples.

Abstract
This report described the use of mesoporous hybrid materials (MHM) in a dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction procedure to extract semivolatile compounds from plant tea that were then analyzed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry. Dihydrotanshinone I, tanshinone I, cryptotanshinone, and tanshinone IIA were selected as the model compounds, and the extraction parameters, including mesoporous concentration, extraction time, sample agitation and desorption solvents, were optimized. The interaction with the analytes and the large surface area of the MHM facilitated the adsorption of analytes. The method showed good linearity, with correlation coefficients >0.9980 in the range 0.25-100 ng/mL, and low limits of detection (0.012-0.046 pg). Finally, the recovery values were 91-103% for Danshen tea, 89-102% for Danshen, and 88-96% for tanshinone capsules. The results showed that the proposed method was suitable for the extraction and determination of tanshinones in complex samples.
