Abstract
Fe3+ ion plays a very active role in life, agriculture, and industry. Human health and the environment are seriously affected by the abnormal presence or excess of this cation. Therefore, the development of a fast, reliable, sensitive, and simple fluorescent probe to detect this cation is crucial. In the present paper, polycaprolactone-capped zinc oxide quantum dots were prepared for the determination of Fe3+ ions. The proposed fluorescent chemosensor exhibited a fluorometric and strong quenching effect toward Fe3+ ions at two wavelengths (303 and 602 nm). The limit of detection (LOD) was calculated as 0.410, and 0.333µM at the mentioned wavelengths. Also, the binding stoichiometric ratio was calculated as 1:1 by Job's plot. The findings indicated that the PCL@ZnO colorimetric chemosensor could be successfully applied with reliable, and good accuracy for the detection of Fe3+ ions in real seawater samples.

Abstract
A novel organic-inorganic hybrid nanosensor (SASP) was prepared by a one-step sol-gel method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, N2 adsorption-desorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, etc. The nanosensor showed almost 3-fold fluorescence emission quenching upon excitation with a 293 nm wavelength in the presence of 20 μM Fe3+ ions. The presence of 18 other metal ions had no observable effect on the sensitivity and selectivity of the nanosensor. A fluorescence analysis method based on the SASP for the selective detection of Fe3+ was established under optimal conditions. The results showed that there was a linear relationship between the log luminescence value and the concentration of Fe3+ over the range of 2.0 × 10-7-9.0 × 10-5 mol L-1 with a detection limit (3σ) of 2.5 × 10-8 mol L-1. Furthermore, the proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of trace Fe3+ in fetal bovine serum without the interference of other molecules and ions. Good recovery (96.5-104.5%) and a relative standard deviation of less than 8.6% were obtained from serum samples spiked with four levels of Fe3+. Additionally, the nanosensor showed a good reversibility; the fluorescence could be switched "off" and "on" in two ways, by adjusting the pH of the solution and adding metal chelating agent EDTA.

Abstract
Naphthalene, white crystalline solid having polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with characteristic mothball order is naturally present in crucial oils of various plants. Naphthalene derivatives are extensive drug resources and are use as wetting agents, surfactants and as insecticides. These derivatives exhibit unique photo physical and chemical properties. These characteristics make them the most studied group of organic compounds. Naphthalene dyes have rigid plane and large π-electron conjugation. Therefor they have high quantum yield and excellent photostability. Naphthalene based fluorescence probes due to hydrophobic nature exhibit excellent sensing and selectivity properties towards anions and cations and also used as a part of target biomolecules. In conjugated probe system, introducing naphthalene moiety caused improvement in photo-stability. Therefore among various conjugated framework, naphthalene derivatives are considered excellent candidate for the construction of organic electronic appliances. These derivatives are useful for a variety of applications owing to their strong fluorescence, electroactivity and photostability. This article is based upon investigation of photophysical properties of naphthalene derivatives and fluorescence detecting probe of naphthalene. For photophysical properties the techniques under investigation are UV visible spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. Concentration dependent spectra and solvatochromic shifts on UV visible spectra are also part of discussion.

Abstract
A switchable fluorescence sensor based on a calix (Monapathi et al., 2021) [4]arene:Cu2+ complex (FLCX/Cu) has been developed for the detection of itraconazole (ITZ) with high sensitivity and specificity. For the development of the sensor, the selective complexation of a fluorescent calix (Monapathi et al., 2021) [4]arene derivative (FL-CX) with the Cu2+ ion causing fluorescence quenching was utilized. In addition, the sensor properties of the FLCX/Cu prepared were investigated. For this purpose, various substances (selected anions, cations, and drugs) with which ITZ can be found together were studied in an aqueous solution. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) values were determined in the range of 1.00-60.0 μg/L as 3.34 μg/L and 11.1 μg/L for ITZ, respectively. Moreover, the real sample analyses were performed in human serum and tablet form. Furthermore, the effect of some possible serum contents on sensor performance was also studied. All these studies confirmed the development of a simple, precise, accurate, reproducible, highly sensitive, and very stable fluorescence sensor.

Abstract
New quinoline based fluorescent sensors 4 and 5 were rationally synthesized that exhibited excellent aggregation induced emission (AIE) in an aqueous medium. High fluorescence emission of sensors was accompanied by a noticeable redshift in their absorption and emission spectra that corresponds to the formation of J-aggregates. An AIE feature of sensors 4 and 5 was used for selective detection of Fe3+ and 4-NP in an aqueous medium that is attributed to the involvement of intermolecular charge transfer (ICT). The interaction mechanism of sensors with Fe3+ and 4-NP was investigated through 1H NMR titration, Jobs plots, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and DFT analysis. The fluorescence quenching response of sensors 4 and 5 displayed distinguished linear behavior with the concentrations of Fe3+ and limits of detection (LOD) were calculated to be 15 and 10 nM, respectively. Further, LOD of sensors 4 and 5 for 4-NP (7.3 and 4.1 nM, respectively) was very low compared to previously reported sensors. Moreover, sensors' coated test strips were fabricated for solid-supported detection of Fe3+ and 4-NP. Sensors were successfully applied for the detection and quantification of Fe3+ and 4-NP in real water samples. Additionally, sensors were used for the determination of trace amounts of Fe3+ in the human serum sample.

Abstract
A novel pyrene modified anthracene dipodal sensor was prepared by a simple synthetic method for the sensitive determination of iron ions in real samples. The chemical characterization analyses including nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry were carried out to characterize the target fluorescent sensor. Photophysical and electrochemical behaviors of the sensor were studied by the absorption, excitation-emission matrix analysis, steady-state fluorescence, three-dimensional fluorescence, and cyclic and square wave voltammetry, respectively. The fluorescent sensor properties were evaluated via Ultraviolet-visible and fluorescence spectroscopies. According to obtained results, the fluorescence signal of the sensor was selectively quenched with interaction with Fe3+ ions. The spectrofluorimetric determination of iron, in real water and medicine samples were successfully carried out under optimized experimental conditions. A detection limit and linear working range were calculated as 0.265 μM and 0.275-55.000 μM, respectively which demonstrated the ability of the simple and sensitive sensor for slight amounts of iron. The obtained detection limit for iron determination with the presented novel fluorescent sensor was less than nearly 20 times the tolerance limit (5.40 µM) in drinking water that was determined by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The accuracy of the newly developed method was evaluated by Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy and spike/recovery test which demonstrated that the developed fluorescent sensor has high accuracy for fast, easy and accessible determination of iron at 95% confidence level.

Abstract
The synthesis of argentivorous molecules (L1 and L2) having two chromophores (4-(anthracen-9-yl)benzyl or 4-(pyren-1-yl)benzyl groups) and two benzyl groups and the fluorescence properties of their silver complexes in a solution and the solid state are reported. A crystallographic approach for the Ag+ complexes with L1 and L2 revealed that the observed fluorescence changes stem from the excimer formation and extinction of fluorescent. Furthermore, binding stabilities of L1 and L2 toward Ag+ ions were estimated by the Ag+-induced UV-vis and PL spectral changes.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), MALDI-MS, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C and 1H NMR) were carried out to characterize the multi-anthracene containing probe. The photophysical properties of the probe were illustrated via 3D-FL analysis and excitation-emission matrix (EEM) measurements. Density-functional theory (DFT) was applied to optimize the structure of the prepared probe and investigate its molecular interactions with Fe3+. The FL proficiency of the probe was appraised by spectroscopic measurements like Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) and FL spectroscopies. The simple and highly sensitive probe was able to diagnose ferric ions' low concentrations and detection limit reached upto 0.223 µM with linear working range between 0.22 and 92.00 µM for Fe3+ ions. The efficacy of this fluorescent probe was confirmed by testing for iron determination in environmental samples. Various fluorophores or ionophores could be applied for achieving novel probes by the proposed procedures and for diagnosing diverse metal ions.

Fabrication and Characterization of Polysaccharide Metallohydrogel Obtained from Succinoglycan and Trivalent Chromium. Polymers (Basel) 2021; 13:polym13020202. Abstract
In the present study, a polysaccharide metallohydrogel was successfully fabricated using succinoglycan and trivalent chromium and was verified via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), field emission scanning electron microscopy, and rheological measurements. Thermal behavior analysis via TGA indicated that the final mass loss of pure succinoglycan was 87.8% although it was reduced to 65.8% by forming a hydrogel with trivalent chromium cations. Moreover, succinoglycan-based metallohydrogels exhibited improved mechanical properties based on the added concentration of Cr3+ and displayed a 10 times higher compressive stress and enhanced storage modulus (G′) of 230% at the same strain. In addition, the pore size of the obtained SCx could be adjusted by changing the concentration of Cr3+. Gelation can also be adjusted based on the initial pH of the metallohydrogel formulation. This was attributed to crosslinking between chromium trivalent ions and hydroxyl/carboxyl groups of succinoglycan, each of which exhibits a specific pH-dependent behavior in aqueous solutions. It could be used as a soft sensor to detect Cr3+ in certain biological systems, or as a soft matrix for bioseparation that allows control of pore size and mechanical strength by tuning the Cr3+ concentration.

Abstract
An anthracene based fluorescent probe, integrated with thiophene moiety, exhibited selective and sensitive detection of chromium (III) ions over other metal ions. Its synthesis was achieved by simple mixing of two commercially available compounds, 2-aminoanthracene, and 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde, in onestep without the needed complex purification process. The probe molecule (
ANT-Th
) offered exceptional features such as “turn-on” fluorescence response, low detection limit (0.4 μM), and fast response time (<1 min) via C=N bond hydrolysis. Also, a simple test paper system was developed for the rapid detection of chromium (III) ions with the naked eye.

Abstract
Collisional intermolecular interactions between excited states form short-lived dimers and complexes that lead to the emergence of excimer/exciplex emission of lower energy, a phenomenon which must be differentiated from the photoluminescence (PL) arising from the monomeric molecules. Although the utilization of noncovalent bonding interactions, leading to the generation of excimer/exciplex PL, has been investigated extensively, precise control of the aggregates and their persistence at very low concentrations remains a rare phenomenon. In the search for a fresh approach, we sought to obtain exciplex PL from permanent structures by incorporating anthracene moieties into pyridinium-containing mechanically interlocked molecules. Beyond the optical properties of the anthracene moieties, their π-extended nature enforces [π···π] stacking that can overcome the Coulombic repulsion between the pyridinium units, affording an efficient synthesis of an octacationic homo[2]catenane. Notably, upon increasing the ionic strength by adding tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate, the catenane yield increases significantly as a result of the decrease in Coulombic repulsions between the pyridinium units. Although the ground-state photophysical properties of the free cyclophane and the catenane are similar and show a charge-transfer band at ∼455 nm, their PL characters are distinct, denoting different excited states. The cyclophane emits at ∼562 nm (quantum yield ϕF = 3.6%, emission lifetime τs = 3 ns in MeCN), which is characteristic of a disubstituted anthracene-pyridinium linker. By contrast, the catenane displays an exciplex PL at low concentration (10-8 M) with an emission band centered on 650 nm (ϕF = 0.5%, τs = 14 ns) in MeCN and at 675 nm in aqueous solution. Live-cell imaging performed in MIAPaCa-2 prostate cancer cells confirmed that the catenane exciplex emission can be detected at micromolar concentrations.

Abstract
A well designed, new pyrene based small molecule (L) was synthesized from 1:1 condensation reaction of 1-aminopyrene and 6-(1,3-benzodioxal-5-yl)-2-pyridine carboxaldehyde which was characterized by absorption, emission spectrometry, FTIR, NMR and mass studies. Interestingly the UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopic studies revealed that the ligand (L) works as a dual turn-on luminescent chemosensor for chromium(III) (Cr3+) and aluminium(III) (Al3+) in aqueous environment which were further supported by DFT and TDDFT studies. L shows a significant colour change from pale yellow to reddish yellow with a detection limit of ~10-9 M in the presence of Cr3+ and Al3+ whereas there were no noteworthy changes in the presence of other monovalent and divalent metal ions. The molecular signaling in the presence of Cr3+, Al3+, Fe3+ and EDTA was compared with advanced level combinational INHIBIT gate based on 4 input logic gates. Herein, first derivative constant wavelength synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (1st DCWSFS) was applied for the determination of Cr3+, Al3+ ion concentrations in a mixture via increment of spectral resolution of the respective overlapping peaks. 1st DCWSFS is reported to be used in pharmaceuticals but very few works have been done for determination of metal ion concentration in environmental sample without prior separation. The individual Cr3+and Al3+ ion concentrations in a mixture were determined through liquid-liquid extraction process and the efficiencies were compared with 1st derivative SFS method. It was observed that 1st derivative SFS process is more efficient than conventional liquid-liquid extraction process. Therefore, 1st DCWSFS method using sensor L might be useful as a diagnostic tool for detection of individual metal ion concentrations (Cr3+ and Al3+) from a mixture which will be cost-effective, time saving and more precise.

Abstract
We investigated the ability of a novel triazatruxene-rhodamine-based (TAT-ROD) chemosensor to detect the trivalent metal ions aluminium (Al3+), iron (Fe3+) and chromium (Cr3+). Operating via the through-bond energy transfer (TBET) pathway, the chemosensor exhibited low detection limits of 23.0, 25.0 and 170.0 nM for Al3+, Fe3+ and Cr3+, respectively, along with high sensitivity and selectivity during a brief period (<15 s). The binding ratio of the chemosensor and trivalent metal ions achieved by Job's method was 3:1, and when we added ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), the sensing process reversed. Altogether, our TAT-ROD chemosensor marks the first triazatruxene-based colorimetric and fluorometric metal ion sensor reported in the literature.

Abstract
Herein, purely aliphatic intrinsically fluorescent terpolymers, i.e., 1 and 2, are synthesized through one-pot solution polymerization via N-H functionalized and multi C-C/C-N coupled in situ protrusion of fluorescent monomers using two nonemissive monomers. These scalable terpolymers are suitable for highly selective Fe(III) sensing, high-performance exclusion of Fe(III), logic function and the imaging of normal mammalian Madin-Darby canine kidney and human osteosarcoma cancer cell lines. The structures of terpolymers, in situ attachment of fluorescent monomers, clusteroluminescence, adsorption-mechanism, and cell-imaging abilities are understood via unadsorbed and/or adsorbed microstructural analyses using 1 H/13 C NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, fluorescence imaging, and fluorescence lifetime. The geometries, electronic structures, location of fluorophores, and singlet-singlet absorption and emission of terpolymers are examined using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT. For the precise identification of fluorophores, transition from occupied natural transition orbitals (NTOs) to unoccupied NTOs is computed. For 1/2, limit of detection (LOD) values and adsorption capacities are 6.0 × 10-7 /8.0 × 10-7 m and 147.82/120.56 mg g-1 at pHi = 7.0 and 303 K, respectively. The overall properties of 1 are more advantageous compared to 2 in sensing, cell imaging, and adsorptive exclusion of Fe(III).

Abstract
Iron(III) is well-known to play a vital role in a variety of metabolic processes in almost all living systems, including the human body. However, the excess or deficiency of Fe3+ from the normal permissible limit can cause serious health problems. Therefore, novel analytical methods are developed for the simple, direct, and cost-effective monitoring of Fe3+ concentration in various environmental and biological samples. Because of the high selectivity and sensitivity, fast response time, and simplicity, the fluorescent-based molecular probes have been developed extensively in the past few decades to detect Fe3+. This review was narrated to summarize the Fe3+-selective fluorescent probes that show fluorescence enhancement (turn-on) and ratiometric response. The Fe3+ sensing ability, mechanisms along with the analytical novelties of recently reported 77 fluorescent probes are discussed.

Abstract
Dual functional activity by the same organic-inorganic hybrid material toward selective metal ion detection and its adsorption has drawn more attraction in the field of sensing. However, most of the hybrid materials in the literature are either for sensing studies or adsorption studies. In this manuscript, a fluorescent active hybrid material SiO2 @PBATPA is synthesized by covalent coupling of anthracene-based chelating ligand N,N'-(propane-1,3-diyl) bis(N-(anthracen-9-ylmethyl)-2-((3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl) amino) acetamide) (PBATPA) within the mesopores of newly synthesized cubic mesoporous silica. The synthetic strategy is designed to form an exclusively intramolecular excimer on a solid surface, which is then used as a sensory tool for selective detection of metal ions through fluorescence quenching by the destruction of excimer upon metal ion binding. The dual functions of sensing and adsorption studies show selectivity toward Hg2+ and Cu2+ among various metal ions with detection limits of 37 and 6 ppb, respectively, and adsorption capacities of 482 and 246 mg g-1 , respectively. This material can be used as a sensory cum adsorbent material in real food samples and living organisms such as the brine shrimp Artemia salina without any toxic effects from the material.

Abstract
Three novel bisbenzimidazole derivatives have been synthesized and developed as dual-functional fluorescent sensors for the rapid and highly selective detection of Ag+ and Fe3+ ions in semi-aqueous medium with distinct spectral response for the first time. The absorption intensity is drastically decreased after the addition of Ag+. Contrarily, it is markedly increased upon the addition of Fe3+. And there is a good linear relation at low concentration of both Ag+ and Fe3+, which provides a quantitative method for their detection. Similarly, the sensors show a distinct fluorescence response towards Ag+ and Fe3+ with a different fluorescence color change under UV light. In addition, no significant changes and interference can be observed with other metal ions. The sensing mechanism studies confirm that the N atom in CN of benzimidazole ring of sensor 4a may bind with Ag+ or Fe3+ ion to form metal complex. And there is only a static quenching process for the 4-Ag+ complex system, but both dynamic and static quenching processes occur in the 4-Fe3+ complex system. Moreover, sensors 4 can steadily work in solution with a wide range of pH 4-13 and rapidly respond to Ag+ and Fe3+ with a response time of 10 s. Finally, the sensors have been successfully applied to the visual detection of Ag+ and Fe3+ not only in solution, but also in test paper.

Abstract
A new Cr3+ probe was synthesized using simple Schiff base reaction, which showed prominent fluorescence increasing switch before and after addition Cr3+. The probe proved to have excellent properties, based on both UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra. Those properties included high switching performance, good selectivity, and small interference with other metal ions. The fluorescent change mechanism of the probe was attributed to the combined action between the restricted C=N isomerization and the suppression of highly efficient photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process. Moreover, this fluorescence probe for Cr3+ detection also has great potential for bioimaging of cancer cells.

Abstract
So far, very few numbers of chemosensors for Cr3+ ion have been reported. However, the main drawback of reported receptors are the lack of selectivity and other trivalent cations such as Fe3+, Al3+ and anions like F- and -OAc frequently interfere with such assays. This paper present the synthesis, characterization & sensor studies of Schiff base containing naphthalene moiety which selectively detect Cr3+ ion by chemodosimetric approach. Using FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and ESI mass spectroscopic techniques the probe was characterized. This receptor exhibit more selectivity and sensitivity towards Cr3+ than other divalent and trivalent cations like Mn2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, Fe3+, and Al3+ ions. After the addition of chromium ion the receptor get change from yellow to colorless in aqueous medium. But no color change was observed on the addition of other metal ions. Using UV-Vis and PL studies, it was confirmed that the selective hydrolysis of imine group of receptor by Cr3+ ions takes place with high fluorescence enhancement that is corresponding to 1-naphthylamine. Receptor acts as selective chemodosimeter for Cr3+ ions with 2:1 stoichiometry and micro molar detection limit. This chemodosimetric approach was applied successfully for bio-imaging of HeLa cells.

Abstract
The sole existence of a t-bone-shaped naphthalimide derivative [2-(2-aminoethyl)-1H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)dione] (NAP), which gives rise to a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism, has been established using a combination of experimental and theoretical studies. In parallel an in vitro-in cell PET mechanism has also been shown. To understand the photophysics of NAP, solvent studies have been carried out in different solvents. In addition, theoretical calculations have been conducted to explain the spectroscopic properties through optimized structures. A "turn off" PET mechanism has also been observed in the presence of specific metal ions, namely, Cr3+ , Fe3+ and Hg2+ among a series of metal ions. Theoretical studies reveal that NAP-Cr3+ , NAP-Fe3+ and NAP-Hg2+ have their HOMO energy states lying in between a HOMO-LUMO energy state of the t-bone-type NAP molecule. On the contrary, the HOMO state of the other metal ion-NAP conjugate (NAP-Mn+ ) does not lie in between the HOMO-LUMO energy gap of the t-bone-type NAP molecule. Coupled with in vitro studies, in cell investigations reveal an enhancement of fluorescence intensity of NAP upon cytosolic metal sensing. Furthermore, a very high cell viability of NAP treated cells as tested by MTT assay and a fast permeation of the said compound as revealed by flow cytometry suggest NAP to be a potential candidate in metal sensing and bioimaging applications.

Talanta 2016; 162:574-582. Abstract
Simultaneous determination of Cd(II), Pb(II), As(III) and Hg(II) metal ions was carried out based on the synergistic effect of graphene oxide (GO) textured with redox active ruthenium(II) bipyridine complex ([Ru(bpy)3]2+). [Ru(bpy)3]2+-GO nanocomposite on the modified gold (Au) electrode acts as an electrocatalyst and favours the sensitive and selective detection of metal ions. Also, it exhibited an enhanced electron transfer rate with a low solution resistance examined by cyclic voltammetry and impedance analysis. The inherent electrochemical and electrocatalytic behaviours of [Ru(bpy)3]2+-GO on gold electrode were demonstrated for simultaneous detection of heavy metal ions in water matrix. The proposed sensor exhibited a higher sensitivity towards Cd(II), Pb(II), As(III) and Hg(II) metal ions with a lowest detection limit of 2.8, 1.41, 2.3 and 1.6nM respectively. The observed detection limits were less than the World Health Organization standards and hence the developed sensor can be deployed for detecting heavy metal ions in water bodies. Simultaneous electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions in river and tap water was carried out using the developed sensor and the observed results were validated with atomic absorption spectroscopy.
