A novel electrochemical sensing platform for detection of dopamine based on gold nanobipyramid/multi-walled carbon nanotube hybrids. Anal Bioanal Chem 2020; 412:2433-2441. [PMID: 32062832 DOI: 10.1007/s00216-020-02455-5] [Citation(s) in RCA: 25] [Impact Index Per Article: 6.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/04/2019] [Revised: 01/15/2020] [Accepted: 01/23/2020] [Indexed: 12/16/2022]
Abstract
Dopamine homeostasis is an important clinical diagnostic index, because an abnormal level in the human body is closely related to certain serious diseases. Herein, a novel electrochemical sensing platform based on gold nanobipyramid/multi-walled carbon nanotube hybrids (AuNBP/MWCNTs) is developed to detect dopamine in human fluids. Using field emission scanning electron microscopy, it is observed that AuNBPs of about 60 nm with two pyramids are well dispersed on the surface of MWCNTs. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm that AuNBPs are self-assembled onto the surface of MWCNTs to form the hybrids. Cyclic voltammetry reveals that the AuNBP/MWCNTs exhibit good electrocatalytic activity toward dopamine oxidation owing to the synergistic effects of AuNBPs and MWCNTs. In addition, both cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry display three well-resolved and distinct oxidation peaks on the AuNBP/MWCNT-modified glassy carbon electrode. Based on AuNBP/MWCNTs, the newly developed electrochemical sensor is used to detect dopamine in the presence of ascorbic acid and uric acid over a wide linear range from 50 nM to 2.7 mM and a low detection limit of 15 nM (at S/N = 3). The electrochemical sensor can also be applied for the quantitative analysis of dopamine in real samples. Graphical abstract A novel electrochemical sensing platform based on gold nanobipyramid/multi-walled carbon nanotube hybrids (AuNBP/MWCNTs) was proposed to detect dopamine in the presence of ascorbic acid and uric acid.

Abstract
Piperazine-based compounds bearing two phenylboronic acid or two benzoxaborole groups (PBPA and PBBB) were applied as dopamine receptors in polymeric membranes (PVC/DOS) of ion-selective electrodes. The potentiometric sensitivity and selectivity of the sensors towards dopamine were evaluated and compared with the results obtained for 2-phenylethylamine. Since the developed electrodes displayed strong interference from 2-phenylethylamine, single-molecule geometry optimizations were performed using the density functional theory (DFT) method in order to investigate the origin of dopamine/2-phenylethylamine selectivity. The results indicated that phenylboronic acid and benzoxaborole receptors bind dopamine mainly through the dative B⁻N bond (like 2-phenylethylamine) and the potentiometric selectivity is mainly governed by the higher lipophilicity of 2-phenylethylamine.

Abstract
Carbon nanomaterials possess superb properties and have contributed considerably to the advancement of integrated point-of-care chemical and biological sensing devices. Graphene has been widely researched as a signal transducing and sensing material. Here, a grass-like laser-scribed graphene (LSG) was synthesized by direct laser induction on common polyimide plastics. The resulting LSG grass was employed as a disposable electrochemical sensor for the detection of three neurotransmitters, dopamine (DA), epinephrine (EP), and norepinephrine (NE), and in the presence of uric acid and ascorbic acid as potential interferants, using differential pulse voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry. The LSG grass sensor achieved sensitivities of 0.243, 0.067, and 0.110 μA μM-1 for DA, EP, and NE, respectively, whereas the limits of detection were 0.43, 1.1, and 1.3 μM, respectively. The selectivity of LSG grass was excellent for competing biomarkers with high structural similarity (EP vs NE and EP vs DA). The exceptional performance of LSG grass for DA, EP, and NE detection holds a promising future for carbon nanomaterial sensors with unique surface morphologies.

Abstract
A nanocomposite with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) coated with surface molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) poly(3-aminophenylboronic acid) (PAPBA) was successfully prepared via potentiodynamic electropolymerization and tested as an effective electrochemical material for epinephrine (EP) detection. The morphology and properties of the sensing material were characterized with scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Compared with MWCNTs or non-imprinted polymers PAPBA modified MWCNTs electrodes, the PAPBA(MIPs)/MWCNTs modified electrode showed a lower charge transfer resistance and enhanced electrochemical performance for EP detection. The improved performance can be attributed to the large amount of specific imprinted cavities with boric acid group which can selectively adsorb EP molecule and the synergistic effect between MWCNTs and PAPBA(MIPs). The effects of pH, the molar ratio between monomer and template molecule, the cycle number of electropolymerization, and the accumulation time of the modified electrode on the sensing performance were investigated. It was found that under the optimal conditions, the PAPBA(MIPs)/MWCNTs sensor could effectively recognize EP from many possible interferents of higher concentration within a wide linear range of 0.2-800 μmol·L-1, with low detection limit of 35 nmol·L-1, high sensitivity and good discrimination. The detection of EP in human serum and real injection samples using the PAPBA(MIPs)/MWCNTs sensor also gave satisfactory results.

Abstract
A photoelectrochemical wire microelectrode was constructed based on the use of a TiO2 nanotube array with electrochemically deposited CdSe semiconductor. A strongly amplified photocurrent is generated on the sensor surface. The microsensor has a response in the 0.05-20 μM dopamine (DA) concentration range and a 16.7 μM detection limit at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. Sensitivity, recovery and reproducibility of the sensor were validated by detecting DA in spiked human urine, and satisfactory results were obtained. Abstract
In this study, preparation of a single-use electrochemical sensor for the selective and sensitive determination of dopamine (DOP) was investigated by electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid on electrochemically over-oxidized pencil graphite electrode (p(P3CA)/EOPGE). Cyclic voltammetry measurements of Fe(CN)64-/3- indicated that the electrochemically over-oxidized PGE (EOPGE) showed superior electron transfer characteristics according to bare PGE. The ionized carboxyl groups found in the structure of poly(pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid) (p(P3CA)) showed high affinity towards positively charged DOP. The combination of the advantages of EOPGE and p(P3CA) in p(P3CA)/EOPGE led to a synergistic effect on the electrochemical oxidation of DOP. The effects of experimental variables on the voltammetric performance of the p(P3CA)/EOPGE were examined by preparing the electrodes at different conditions. The p(P3CA)/EOPGE showed high selectivity towards DOP by discriminating its oxidation potential from the common interfering substances such as ascorbic and uric acids. The p(P3CA)/EOPGE showed linear responses in the electrochemical oxidation of DOP between the concentration values of 0.025µM and 7.5µM. Detection limit was determined as 0.0025µM according to signal to noise ratio (S/N: 3). Analytical application of p(P3CA)/EOPGE was successfully tested in the determination of DOP in blood serum and pharmaceutical samples.

Abstract
A new biomimetic electrochemical sensor was developed for the detection of dopamine based on a glassy carbon electrode modified with electrochemically generated gold nanoparticles. The preparation of the polymer is simple and cost-effective, achieving the polymerization of thioaniline and generation of gold nanoparticles in a single step by cyclic voltammetry, in the presence of the target molecule, dopamine. After extraction, the imprinted polymer exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity for dopamine. Moreover, the developed imprinted polymer film allows the fast, direct detection of dopamine without the need of a redox mediator. The formation of a self-assembled monolayer of the monomer prior to electropolymerization ensures the adherence of the film onto the electrode surface, conferring good stability to the sensor (over two weeks). Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used for the complete characterization of the developed sensor, and differential pulse voltammetry was used for its testing.
